Most major insurers sell auto policies in six- or 12-month terms instead.
The right short-term solution depends on three questions: Who owns the car? How often will you drive it? And do you need protection for damage to the car, or only liability coverage?
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Borrowing a vehicle occasionally, renting a car, storing an owned car, and driving your own vehicle for only a few miles each month all call for different insurance arrangements.
Best temporary car insurance by situation
| Your situation | Usually the best option | What it generally covers |
|---|---|---|
| You own the car but need it insured briefly | Buy a standard policy and cancel it when you sell or stop using the car | The liability, collision, comprehensive, and other coverages selected on the policy |
| You occasionally borrow a friend’s or relative’s car | Use the owner’s policy after confirming permissive-use terms | Usually liability; physical-damage coverage varies |
| You borrow cars regularly but do not own one | Non-owner car insurance | Usually your liability to other people, not damage to the borrowed car |
| You rent a car | Combine existing coverage, non-owner insurance, rental-company protection, or credit-card benefits after checking the terms | Liability and/or rental-car damage, depending on the products used |
| You own a car and drive very little | Pay-per-mile or usage-based insurance | Normal auto insurance priced partly by mileage or driving behavior |
| Your car is stored and will not be driven | Ask about suspending selected coverages while retaining appropriate protection | Often comprehensive-type protection against theft, vandalism, weather, or falling objects |
If you own the vehicle: buy a normal policy, then cancel it
For a vehicle you own, a standard auto policy is normally the most practical substitute for temporary insurance. Major insurers generally do not offer genuine daily or weekly policies. You can often cancel a six-month policy early when the vehicle is sold, transferred, or no longer used.

Do not cancel while the car is still being driven. A lapse can leave you personally responsible for a crash, create registration or financial-responsibility problems, and potentially increase future insurance rates.
Before canceling, get these details in writing
- The exact date and time coverage ends.
- Whether unused premium will be refunded.
- Whether the insurer charges a short-rate or other cancellation fee.
- Whether the insurer notifies the DMV or whether you must file a notice yourself.
- Whether a lender or leasing company still requires active coverage.
- Whether your state requires a separate non-use filing for a registered vehicle.
State rules matter. For example, California requires liability insurance for a registered vehicle unless the owner files an Affidavit of Non-Use. A vehicle under that status cannot be driven or parked on public roads. Similar requirements may apply elsewhere, so ask your state DMV before removing coverage.
If you are borrowing someone else’s car
For occasional, permitted driving, the vehicle owner’s policy is usually the first place to look. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners says most liability policies cover a licensed driver using the car with permission. That does not mean every permissive driver receives identical protection under every policy.

- The owner has given you clear permission.
- You have a valid driver’s license.
- You are not listed as an excluded driver.
- You will use the car occasionally, rather than as your regular vehicle.
- The trip does not involve delivery, rideshare, or another excluded business use.
- The liability limits are high enough for the risk.
- The policy addresses damage to the vehicle when a permissive driver causes a crash.
Permissive use is not a temporary policy in your name. Coverage can be reduced for an unlisted driver, and an excluded driver generally is not covered even if the owner hands over the keys. A person who lives in the owner’s household or drives the car regularly may need to be added to the policy.

What happens after an accident?
The vehicle owner’s insurance is commonly the primary policy for a covered use. However, deductibles, coverage limits, exclusions, and state rules affect the result. If the damage exceeds the owner’s liability limits, you could still face personal exposure. Do not assume that permission guarantees full coverage for every loss.
Best option for regular borrowing: non-owner car insurance
A non-owner policy is designed for someone who drives but does not own a vehicle. It generally provides liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage you cause while driving a borrowed or rented car. Depending on the insurer and state, it may also include uninsured/underinsured-motorist coverage or medical-payments coverage.
Non-owner insurance is usually:
- Written for a normal policy term, not one day or one week.
- Focused on liability rather than damage to the vehicle.
- Secondary to the vehicle owner’s insurance in many situations.
- Available only from insurers that offer it in your state.
- Useful for maintaining continuous insurance history or satisfying an SR-22 requirement.
The major limitation is important: non-owner insurance generally does not pay to repair the borrowed car. It is not a replacement for collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, or a rental company’s loss-damage waiver.

- You own the vehicle.
- The car is furnished or available to you for regular use.
- You live with the owner and drive the car routinely.
- You need protection for damage to the borrowed vehicle.
- You use the car for rideshare, delivery, or other commercial driving.
Best temporary coverage for rental cars
Rental companies often sell several separate products. They protect different risks and should not be treated as interchangeable.

- ESSENTIAL Car Auto Insurance Registration BLACK Document Wallet Holders 2 Pieces
| Rental product | Typical purpose |
|---|---|
| Liability protection | Helps cover injuries or property damage you cause to other people, subject to the terms and limits |
| Loss-damage waiver or collision-damage waiver | Protects the rental vehicle against damage, theft, or vandalism under the rental agreement |
| Personal accident coverage | May cover injuries to the renter and passengers |
| Personal-effects coverage | May cover belongings stolen from or damaged inside the rental vehicle |
Your personal auto policy may extend liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage to a rental car. Check whether the rental qualifies as a covered auto, whether your destination is included, whether your deductible applies, and whether the policy pays loss-of-use charges, administrative fees, towing, or diminished value.
A non-owner policy may provide liability protection but generally will not pay for damage to the rental car. Conversely, a loss-damage waiver may protect the rental vehicle without providing the liability limits you want.
Do credit cards provide temporary rental insurance?
Some credit cards provide collision and theft protection, often on a secondary basis. Coverage depends on the card’s benefits guide and may require you to pay the entire rental with that card, decline the rental company’s waiver, and remain within specified rental periods or vehicle categories.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume credit-card protection is primary liability insurance. Read the benefits guide before declining coverage at the rental counter. Also list every person who will drive. An unauthorized driver can invalidate protection and leave the renter responsible for damage, even when a waiver was purchased.

Pay-per-mile and usage-based insurance for low-mileage drivers
Pay-per-mile insurance is not temporary insurance, but it can be cheaper than a conventional policy for an owned car that is driven infrequently. The vehicle remains insured under a regular policy; the price is adjusted using mileage or driving data.
- Allstate Milewise: uses a daily rate plus a per-mile charge and tracks mileage with a device or connected vehicle. Allstate’s current FAQ says a reporting failure can result in a default assessment of 40 miles per day.
- Nationwide SmartMiles: combines a base premium with a per-mile premium. Nationwide currently lists Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, and Oklahoma as unavailable states, although availability and eligibility can change.
- Progressive Snapshot: evaluates factors such as mileage, time of day, hard braking, acceleration, and, in some app programs, phone use. Progressive says high-risk driving can increase the rate.
Compare the fixed daily or monthly cost plus mileage charges with a standard policy. A pay-per-mile plan may cost more for a long commute, frequent road trips, or heavy daily driving.

Do not simply cancel all insurance on a stored car. Even when parked, it can be stolen, vandalized, damaged by hail, or hit by a falling object. Ask the insurer whether you can suspend liability and collision coverage while retaining comprehensive-type protection.
This arrangement depends on your insurer, state, registration status, and lender. A financed or leased car may require comprehensive and collision coverage for the entire loan or lease term.

Common temporary-insurance claims that are wrong
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “Any major insurer can sell me one-day insurance.” | Usually false in the U.S. Major insurers generally sell longer-term policies. Be cautious with unusually cheap daily-policy advertisements. |
| “A non-owner policy covers any car I borrow.” | Generally false. It is primarily liability coverage and normally does not repair the borrowed vehicle. |
| “The owner’s policy covers every permissive driver in full.” | False. Coverage may be reduced, physical damage may be excluded, and specific drivers may be excluded. |
| “Credit-card rental insurance replaces liability coverage.” | Not necessarily. Card benefits often focus on collision and theft and may be secondary. |
| “Temporary substitute vehicle” means temporary insurance. | Usually false. It is a policy term commonly referring to a replacement vehicle used while a covered car is being repaired. |
| “Canceling early is always free with a full refund.” | False. Fees, refunds, notice requirements, and state rules vary. |
How to choose the right short-term solution
- Identify the owner. Decide whether the car belongs to you, a family member, a friend, or a rental company.
- Ask what coverage already applies. Review the owner’s policy, your personal policy, rental-company options, and any credit-card benefits.
- Separate liability from vehicle damage. Decide whether you need protection only for injuries and property damage to others, or also for the car you are driving.
- Check how often you will drive. Occasional borrowing may be covered under permissive use; regular access may require being listed or obtaining your own policy.
- Review exclusions. Pay particular attention to household use, regular use, rideshare, delivery, business driving, international travel, and unauthorized drivers.
- Compare the total cost. For a rental, compare your existing policy, rental-company protection, a non-owner policy, and eligible credit-card benefits—not just the cheapest headline price.
- Verify the seller. Confirm that the insurer or agent is licensed in your state. The NAIC recommends checking with your state insurance department before paying an unfamiliar seller.
FAQ
Can I buy one-day car insurance in the U.S.?
Usually not from a major U.S. auto insurer. Most policies run for six or 12 months. If you own the car, the usual approach is to buy a standard policy and cancel it after the vehicle is sold or no longer driven, subject to cancellation rules.
Does non-owner insurance cover a borrowed car?
It generally covers your liability for injuries or property damage you cause while driving, but it normally does not cover physical damage to the borrowed vehicle. Check whether the owner’s policy provides that protection.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Is the owner’s insurance enough when I borrow a friend’s car?
It may be enough for occasional, permitted use, but do not assume full coverage. Confirm that you are not excluded, that the use is not regular or commercial, and that liability and physical-damage limits are adequate.
What is the best insurance for a rental car?
There is no single answer. Your personal auto policy may extend coverage, while a rental-company liability option or loss-damage waiver may fill gaps. A credit card may cover collision or theft, but it should not automatically be treated as primary liability insurance.
The Bottom Line
The best “temporary car insurance” is usually not a one-day policy. Use the vehicle owner’s permissive-use coverage for occasional borrowing, a non-owner policy for regular borrowing without ownership, rental-company protection or verified existing coverage for rentals, and a standard policy for a car you own. If your own vehicle is driven only a few miles, compare pay-per-mile insurance instead of trying to create a short policy term.
Before canceling or declining coverage, confirm the policy’s effective dates, deductibles, exclusions, damage protection, and state requirements in writing.
