Yes—but “doubling” describes BYD’s planned end-state capacity, not current output. BYD has described its Camaçari complex in Bahia as progressing from a 150,000-vehicle first phase to 300,000 vehicles a year in the next phase, then to 600,000 at full operation. The 600,000 figure is a capacity target announced in 2025, and no cited source confirms that the plant is already operating at that rate.
The latest operating milestone is more concrete: BYD said in July 2026 that it had produced 100,000 electrified vehicles in Brazil over nine months and employed 5,500 direct workers. Camaçari was building the Dolphin Mini, King and Song Pro while local welding, stamping, painting and supplier operations were being added.

What does BYD mean by doubling production in Brazil?
BYD’s “doubling” refers to moving from the 300,000-vehicle annual capacity planned for Camaçari’s second phase to a 600,000-vehicle annual capacity at full operation. It is not a claim that production has already doubled to 600,000 vehicles a year.
| Development stage | Stated annual capacity | Status described by BYD |
|---|---|---|
| First phase | 150,000 vehicles | Capacity announced in 2025 |
| Second phase | 300,000 vehicles | Planned intermediate capacity announced in 2025 |
| Full operation | 600,000 vehicles | Planned end-state target announced by founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu |
These are designed capacities, not audited production results. The available announcements do not establish a current annualized run-rate against the 600,000-vehicle goal.

How far has the Camaçari factory progressed?
The plant has moved from inauguration and initial assembly into higher-volume production, but the expansion is still being built out.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| October 9, 2025 | BYD inaugurated the Camaçari complex. |
| November 26, 2025 | BYD reported 10,000 vehicles produced and said a second production shift had started. |
| January 8, 2026 | BYD reported nearly 18,000 vehicles produced since inauguration and nearly 20,000 during 2025. It listed production expansion, local suppliers and the launch of welding, stamping and painting as 2026 priorities. |
| July 2026 | BYD reported 100,000 electrified vehicles produced in Brazil in nine months and 5,500 direct employees. |
The July announcement is a cumulative milestone. It should not be converted into a 100,000-vehicle annual rate because the statement covers nine months and does not provide a full-year production forecast.

How many cars will BYD make at Camaçari?
The eventual target is 600,000 vehicles per year, while the intermediate target is 300,000. Actual output reported so far is cumulative: nearly 20,000 vehicles in 2025 and 100,000 vehicles over nine months by July 2026.

What BYD models are made in Brazil?
BYD has identified three Camaçari-built models in its operating updates:
- BYD Dolphin Mini
- BYD King
- BYD Song Pro
The vehicle marking the 100,000-vehicle milestone in July 2026 was a Dolphin Mini. The announcement also confirmed that the King sedan and Song Pro SUV were being built at the complex, but it did not provide a model-by-model production split.

How much is BYD investing, and how many jobs is the factory creating?
BYD describes the Camaçari project as a R$5.5 billion investment on approximately 4.6 million square metres. Employment figures vary because the announcements count different groups.
| Figure | What it measures | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 5,500 | Direct employees | BYD Media Center, July 2026 |
| 6,200 | Operating workers | Government of Bahia, March 2026 |
| 3,500 | Construction workers | Government of Bahia, March 2026 |
| 86% | Share of direct employees from Bahia | BYD Media Center, 2026 |
The government’s 6,200 operating workers plus 3,500 construction workers are not the same measure as BYD’s 5,500 direct factory employees. Presenting them as one headcount would overstate what each figure represents.
How local is BYD’s Brazilian production?
Camaçari initially relied on imported semi-knocked-down kits and final assembly. BYD has been adding deeper manufacturing steps and Brazilian suppliers so that more work occurs locally.

|---|---|
| Welding, stamping and painting | BYD identified these operations as 2026 priorities. |
| Cross Car Beam line | Bahia’s economic-development department reported validation in June 2026; the part was to be welded, assembled and calibrated in Brazil with robots and automated tools instead of arriving fully assembled. |
| More than 30% of components made in Brazil | Government of Bahia expectation from August 2026. |
| 50% nationalization of parts and components | BYD Brazil target for the end of 2026. |
Alexandre Baldy, BYD Auto do Brasil’s senior vice president and head of commercial and marketing, said the company expects to reach 50% nationalization of vehicle parts and components by the end of 2026. That is a target, not a published audited result.

Nexteer said its Camaçari facility, about 10 kilometres from BYD, began production in early October 2026 and would assemble Column-Assist Electric Power Steering systems for vehicles built in Brazil. The development gives BYD a nearby source for a major vehicle system rather than relying entirely on imported assemblies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is BYD expanding production in Brazil?
BYD says local production will support growth in Brazil and improve price competitiveness after import-tariff incentives ended. Baldy described Camaçari production as decisive to competing on price under those conditions.

Local content can also support exports. The Bahia government reported possible prospective orders of 50,000 vehicles for Mexico and another 50,000 for Argentina, saying Brazilian-made content could make exports more feasible. The cited announcements do not confirm that either volume has shipped, so these figures should be treated as potential demand rather than delivered exports.
Tyler Li, president of BYD Brazil, has framed the project around four linked objectives: higher output, local employment, a domestic supplier chain and wider adoption of electrified mobility. Whether the 600,000-vehicle target is achieved will depend on the pace of that industrial build-out, not simply on adding assembly shifts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which vehicle was the 100,000th electrified car produced in Brazil?
BYD identified the milestone vehicle as a Dolphin Mini in its July 2026 announcement. The same update said the King sedan and Song Pro SUV were also being built at Camaçari, but it did not disclose each model’s share of production.
What does SKD assembly mean in BYD’s Brazilian rollout?
Semi-knocked-down assembly means major vehicle modules arrive from elsewhere and are assembled locally. BYD’s stated move into welding, stamping, painting and component manufacturing represents a deeper production process than relying only on imported kits.
What is Nexteer making near the BYD plant?
Nexteer’s Camaçari operation assembles Column-Assist Electric Power Steering systems for Brazilian-built vehicles. Nexteer said the facility began production in early October 2026 and is located about 10 kilometres from BYD’s complex.
Does BYD have a confirmed export program from Brazil?
Not on the evidence publicly cited here. Bahia officials reported prospective volumes for Mexico and Argentina, but those announcements do not verify that the vehicles were shipped or that a regular export schedule has begun.
