Hyundai Motor Co. recorded 50,262 cumulative hydrogen fuel-cell electric-vehicle sales in South Korea through September 2026. Announced on October 26, the milestone came roughly 13 years after Hyundai launched the Tucson ix FCEV in 2013. The figure is a South Korean domestic total, not a worldwide sales count. The NEXO SUV supplied the largest share of demand, while XCIENT trucks, Elec City city buses and Universe coaches extended hydrogen into commercial fleets.
What exactly does Hyundai’s 50,262 figure measure?
The number covers Hyundai hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles registered in South Korea from the 2013 launch through the end of September 2026. It includes passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, rather than NEXO SUVs alone. Hyundai’s October 26 announcement does not establish a comparable global cumulative total.

- Geography: South Korea domestic sales.
- Cutoff: September 30, 2026.
- Total: 50,262 Hyundai fuel-cell vehicles.
- Elapsed time: approximately 13 years from the Tucson ix FCEV launch.
Hyundai describes the 2013 Tucson ix FCEV as the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. That wording refers to Hyundai’s production claim, not to the first hydrogen vehicle ever built.
How did Hyundai reach the milestone from its first mass-produced hydrogen car?
Hyundai’s program developed in stages, moving from dedicated research to passenger cars and then to high-mileage fleet applications.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
| Year | Development | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Hyundai established a dedicated hydrogen research-and-development organization. | Created a long-term in-house technology program. |
| 2004 | Hyundai developed its own fuel-cell stack. | Reduced reliance on outside stack technology. |
| 2013 | Tucson ix35 Fuel Cell launched. | Hyundai’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. |
| 2018 | Dedicated NEXO passenger vehicle launched. | Became the principal domestic sales driver. |
| 2020 | XCIENT Fuel Cell heavy-duty truck introduced, alongside further bus expansion. | Opened higher-utilization commercial fleet markets. |
Hyundai and its HTWO hydrogen business say the company has pursued hydrogen investment and innovation for nearly 30 years. The commercial rollout matters because trucks and buses can be assigned to predictable routes and return to centralized depots, making infrastructure planning more practical than relying only on scattered private-car demand.
Which Hyundai models generated the sales?
NEXO passenger SUV
The NEXO, launched in 2018, is identified by Hyundai and industry reporting as the biggest contributor to domestic hydrogen sales. The all-new NEXO introduced in 2025 is reported by Hyundai to offer up to 720 km on one hydrogen refill. That is a quoted maximum range, so actual distance varies with driving conditions, payload, weather and refueling practices.

Hyundai’s hydrogen portfolio also includes the XCIENT heavy-duty truck, the Elec City city bus and the Universe coach bus. Government-supported municipal-bus conversion helped commercial adoption, according to ChosunBiz reporting that cited industry sources. These vehicles put hydrogen into scheduled freight, urban-transit and intercity-coach operations rather than limiting it to private ownership.

Did Hyundai’s hydrogen sales accelerate?
Industry reporting cited by ChosunBiz shows progressively larger cumulative milestones in the domestic market:
| Cumulative domestic sales | Year reached | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | 2020 | Early NEXO growth and expanding fleet programs. |
| 20,000 | 2022 | Passenger and commercial adoption continued. |
| 30,000 | 2023 | Fleet deployments helped lift the total. |
| 50,262 | September 2026 | Hyundai’s reported current domestic total. |
The jump from 30,000 in 2023 to 50,262 by September 2026 indicates that the later period added more vehicles than the earlier intervals. The available figures do not provide an exact annual split by model, so they cannot show how much of that acceleration came from NEXO retail demand versus buses and trucks.
Why are subsidies still a constraint?
South Korean hydrogen-vehicle support depends on national subsidy allocations being matched by local-government funding. At the cited 2026 cutoff, 5,093 of 6,000 passenger-vehicle allocations had local matching funds, or 84.9%. For commercial vehicles, 1,270 of 1,800 allocations were matched, or 70.6%, according to South Korean subsidy reporting.

Those percentages describe funding execution, not the number of vehicles Hyundai can technically produce. An allocation without the required local match may not turn into an available purchase incentive, slowing orders even when national money has been budgeted.
The draft 2027 budget would reduce hydrogen-vehicle subsidies by 23%, from 576.2 billion won to 445.7 billion won. Because it is a draft budget, the final appropriation could differ; its significance is the direction of proposed support rather than a guaranteed final cut.
Why do refueling stations remain a bottleneck?
Hydrogen vehicles need dependable station access, and South Korea’s build-out has lagged an earlier government objective. The government target was 310 hydrogen stations by 2022; about 250 had been installed by the time of the 2026 reporting. Site acquisition and station economics were cited as obstacles.

That gap affects the two main markets differently. A private NEXO buyer needs stations along regular routes, while a fleet operator can design around a depot but may need expensive dedicated equipment and sufficient vehicle utilization to justify it. A vehicle’s quoted range, including the all-new NEXO’s maximum 720 km, does not remove the need for conveniently located, functioning stations.
What does the 50,000-vehicle milestone mean for Hyundai’s hydrogen industry?
The sales total is also an industrial milestone. ChosunBiz, citing industry sources, reported about 20,000 parts per hydrogen vehicle, more than 90% localization of NEXO core parts, approximately 37,000 hydrogen-business jobs and 3,000 related corporations in 2024. Those figures describe the wider South Korean supply chain, not Hyundai vehicle sales alone.
Hyundai’s next challenge is therefore broader than selling another passenger model: it must keep fleet demand, subsidy execution and station economics moving together. The milestone shows that a sustained program combining an SUV with buses and trucks can build a domestic market, but the slower infrastructure rollout and proposed subsidy reduction leave the pace of future growth uncertain.
