To be considered, a vehicle must satisfy rules covering newness, launch timing, genuine retail availability in multiple regions, production volume and, for some categories, price, size or performance. International automotive journalist jurors then test-drive and evaluate the eligible cars, vote to create finalists, test those finalists again and vote for the winners.
The public rules explain who is eligible and when the votes occur, but they do not publish a single test route, minimum drive time, attribute-weighting sheet or vote-counting formula. That distinction matters: the awards disclose the framework and stages, not every detail of how an individual juror reaches a score.

What has to be true before a car can contend?
The 2027 World Car Awards criteria start with a basic requirement: a vehicle must be “all new” or “significantly new.” The first major-market launch and the second major-market launch must be no more than two years apart. The listed major markets are Europe, the United States, China, India, Japan, Korea and Latin America, including Mexico.
A routine trim, facelift or variation on an existing model generally is not enough. The criteria make an exception for qualifying performance variants, and the Performance category can accept substantially revised existing models when they were specifically engineered to improve performance. Eligibility is therefore judged against the character and extent of the change, not simply the model year on the window sticker.

Retail availability is stricter than taking reservations
During the 2027 eligibility window—January 1, 2026 through March 19, 2027—the vehicle must be physically for sale or lease and available at a dealership for customer delivery in at least two major markets on two separate continents. World Car Awards defines on-sale status as the date the vehicle is physically available for delivery; advance order-taking alone does not qualify. A manufacturer can announce a car, open a reservation list and still fail this test if customers cannot obtain it through a dealer in the required markets.
Production and positioning thresholds by category
Once a model meets the basic newness and availability tests, category-specific rules apply. The following figures are the 2027 eligibility thresholds published by World Car Awards.

“Primary markets” and “luxury-car level” are not converted into one worldwide price number in the published criteria. Prices can vary substantially by country because of taxes, equipment and market positioning, so the rule is applied in the relevant markets rather than against a single global MSRP.

The program’s homepage and overview identify World Electric Vehicle as an award category, but the displayed 2027 eligibility page does not show a current electric-vehicle threshold in its category text. The 2026 rule should not be carried into the 2027 season without a current statement. The safe conclusion is that the EV award exists in the program, while its current displayed eligibility details require confirmation from the awards organization.
Who actually tests and evaluates the contenders?
The evaluators are international automotive journalist jurors. The official overview says the jurors test-drive and evaluate new or fully redesigned vehicles that are for sale in multiple markets on more than one continent. The 2027 timeline schedules the eligible-vehicle test-drive period from September 2026 through January 2027.
The official overview describes a jury of more than 100 automotive journalists representing 33 countries. Those figures describe the published overview accessed in 2026; jury composition can change by season.

What the older jury criteria tell us
A separate 2025 juror-qualification document provides context, but it should not be treated as an unchanging 2027 rulebook. It says applicants should regularly test-drive manufacturers’ new models and publish test-drive reports in a major edited publication or a broadcast or online outlet. It also describes annual nominations, one-year appointments and an effort to balance representation so that one region does not dominate.

That background explains why the awards use professional automotive observers rather than a public ballot. It does not establish that every 2027 juror has identical credentials, drives the same number of miles or uses the same personal scoring sheet.
How the selection and voting process works
The process is best understood as a series of gates: eligibility, vehicle testing, a first vote, finalist testing and a second vote.
1. The awards determine which vehicles are eligible
Organizers apply the newness, launch-timing, market-availability and category rules. A car that misses a production minimum, is sold in only one continental region or remains available only by advance order cannot proceed simply because it is technically impressive.
2. Jurors drive and assess the eligible field
From September 2026 through January 2027, jurors test-drive eligible vehicles and evaluate them for the awards. The public overview uses the phrase “test drive and evaluate,” but the published material does not specify one mandatory route, minimum drive duration, weather condition, mileage target or equipment configuration.

Nor does it publish a universal attribute-weighting rubric—for example, a fixed percentage for ride comfort, safety, efficiency, technology or value. It is therefore inaccurate to claim that every juror follows a disclosed common scorecard. The awards establish the participants and stages while leaving the detailed road-test method and individual judgment undisclosed.

3. The first vote narrows the field
The first voting deadline for the 2027 season is December 28, 2026. On January 5, 2027, the program plans to announce a top ten for World Car of the Year and top fives for World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Urban Car and World Car Design of the Year.
These lists are finalists, not winners. Reaching a top-ten or top-five position means the vehicle survived the eligibility process and first juror vote; it does not mean it has already won its category.
4. Jurors test-drive the finalists again
Yes, finalists receive another test-drive stage. The 2027 timeline explicitly places finalist testing between the January shortlist announcement and the second ballot. This second look gives jurors an opportunity to compare a smaller, more closely matched group rather than relying only on impressions formed while the eligible field was large.

5. The second vote selects the winners
The second voting deadline is February 15, 2027. The winners are scheduled for announcement on March 24, 2027, at the New York International Auto Show. These dates are specific to the 2027 season and should be checked against the current official calendar if the schedule changes.
Why the design award has an extra layer
World Car Design of the Year follows the general eligibility rules, but design candidates also receive specialist scrutiny. For the 2026 award, a panel of design experts reviewed each candidate and produced a recommended shortlist for the jurors.
The panel recommends; it does not replace the journalist jury. The 2027 criteria say every vehicle eligible for the World Car Awards is automatically eligible for the design category, while the design-panel material shows how expert review can help focus the jurors’ attention. The published information does not say that design experts cast the final award vote or that the design category uses a different disclosed road-test score.

What the awards do—and do not—publish about testing
Readers often expect a repeatable laboratory procedure: a fixed circuit, timed sessions, identical weather, instrumented measurements and a published scoring model. World Car Awards’ public pages do not provide that level of detail.
- Published: eligible vehicles are test-driven and evaluated by international automotive journalist jurors.
- Published: the eligible field is reduced by a first vote, finalists are tested again and a second vote chooses winners.
- Not published: a mandatory road route or minimum time behind the wheel.
- Not published: fixed weights for handling, comfort, design, value, efficiency, safety or other attributes.
- Not published: a detailed vote-tabulation formula or the number of points assigned to each ballot position.
Because those details are not disclosed, outside readers can describe the stages and eligibility rules with confidence but should not invent a universal test protocol or present a speculative points system as official.

The categories are separated mainly by the type of vehicle they are intended to recognize, not by a publicly documented set of different driving tests.
World Car of the Year
This is the broadest category, but it still requires at least 10,000 units of annual production and pricing below luxury-car level in primary markets. It is aimed at a widely produced vehicle with international availability rather than an ultra-low-volume specialist.
World Urban Car
Urban contenders need at least 5,000 units annually, must be no longer than 4.25 metres and must be approved for public roads. The length cap makes exterior footprint a formal eligibility condition, not merely an editorial description.
World Luxury Car
Luxury contenders also need at least 5,000 units annually, but their pricing must sit at luxury-car level in primary markets. This category’s threshold is therefore the inverse of the mainstream World Car requirement: production cannot be too small, while market positioning must be premium.

World Performance Car
Performance contenders have the lowest annual-volume threshold—1,000 units—but must be overtly performance-focused. A substantially revised existing model can qualify when the redesign is specifically intended to improve performance. The rule recognizes that performance derivatives may share a nameplate without being ordinary variants.
World Car Design of the Year
Design has no separate production or size threshold in the displayed 2027 criteria. Eligible vehicles enter automatically, then design experts recommend a shortlist before the jurors make the award decision.

The program began in 2003 and was officially launched in January 2004. Its long-running structure explains the familiar sequence—eligible cars, juror testing, finalists and a final vote—but each season’s dates and criteria remain the controlling references.

A World Car of the Year contender is selected through a rule-based international process, not by nominations alone or by a single public test. It must first be new enough, available enough and produced in sufficient volume for its category. Professional automotive journalists then drive the eligible vehicles, vote on a broad field, drive the finalists again and cast a final ballot.
The design award adds expert design review, while the other categories are distinguished by volume, pricing, dimensions or performance focus. The official material stops short of revealing a common route, a weighted scorecard or a vote-counting formula, so any account that supplies those missing details is going beyond what World Car Awards has publicly established.
