Use a triple-screen infotainment system only when driving conditions allow, prepare destinations and settings while parked, and keep your eyes on traffic rather than the passenger display. A three-display layout can separate driving information, shared controls and passenger entertainment, but it does not make typing, reading or menu browsing safe while the car is moving. The exact screens, controls, lockouts and legal restrictions depend on the vehicle, software version and jurisdiction.
Why three screens can still distract you
Distraction is not measured by the number of screens. It comes from what your eyes, hands and mind must do to operate them. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving to include activities such as fiddling with a stereo, entertainment system or navigation system. Texting is especially demanding because it combines visual, manual and cognitive distraction.

NHTSA’s Countermeasures That Work chapter attributes 3,522 distracted-driving deaths in 2021, equal to 8% of all U.S. traffic fatalities, to figures from NCSA (2023). NHTSA’s current “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign page reports 3,208 people killed and more than 315,000 injured in crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024. Those are different years and pages, so they should not be treated as a directly comparable trend without checking each source’s methodology.

What “triple-screen” means in the documented EQS example
Mercedes-Benz marketed the EQS MBUX Hyperscreen as a continuous-looking band of three displays. In that specific implementation, the driver display is 12.3 inches, the central display is 17.7 inches and the front-passenger display is 12.3 inches. These dimensions describe the cited EQS configuration only; they are not a specification for every car sold with three screens.

The March 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Saloon MBUX Owner’s Manual identifies the driver display, central touchscreen, front-passenger touchscreen and a system control panel. It says the front-passenger display is intended exclusively for the passenger. The manual warns: “If you look at the front passenger display while driving, you may be distracted from the traffic. This could also cause you to lose control of the vehicle.” It then states: “Keep the actual traffic situation constantly in view.” and “Avoid looking at the front passenger display while driving.” Those instructions apply to that vehicle and edition, but the underlying principle is useful for any layout: a screen placed beside the passenger is not automatically a safe screen for the driver to watch.
Prepare the system before you move
Complete high-attention tasks while parked in a safe place. Use the following sequence, adapting the labels to your vehicle’s manual rather than assuming the EQS menus exist in another model.
- Identify the three roles. Sit in the parked vehicle and determine which display carries driving information, which one controls shared functions, and whether the passenger display is separate. Note the physical control panel, steering-wheel controls, voice input and any other supported methods.
- Set the route. Enter the destination, review the route and choose guidance before pulling away. If the route changes later, let a passenger make the change or pull over safely before editing it.
- Choose audio. Select the source, station, playlist or podcast and set a comfortable volume. Learn the simplest available track, source and volume controls so a small change does not require menu browsing.
- Set climate and other comfort functions. Adjust temperature, airflow and seat-related preferences before departure where the vehicle supports those controls. Avoid experimenting with unfamiliar menus on the road.
- Reduce nonessential alerts. Silence or defer notifications that are not needed for the trip, using the vehicle’s documented settings. Do not assume a “do not disturb” mode blocks every alert or complies with local law.
- Assign passenger tasks. If someone is riding with you, ask that person to handle message reading, destination changes, searches and entertainment. NHTSA describes this role as a “designated texter.” The passenger should operate the passenger display without drawing the driver’s gaze toward it.
- Check the manual and market-specific rules. Read the current owner’s manual for the exact model, model year, trim, software version and country. If an instruction is unclear, ask the manufacturer or dealer before attempting the function while driving.
Before leaving, make sure the route is active, the screen brightness is comfortable, and the phone is secured according to the vehicle’s instructions. The aim is not to memorize every feature; it is to remove the decisions most likely to demand a long glance or several touches.
Operate only when traffic permits
The July 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS Saloon V297 MBUX Owner’s Manual gives a broad warning: “If you operate information systems and communications equipment integrated in the vehicle when driving, you could be distracted from the traffic situation. This could also cause you to lose control of the vehicle.” It follows with: “Only operate this equipment when the traffic situation permits.” If you cannot be sure operation is safe, the manual directs you to stop in accordance with traffic conditions.

Apply that rule conservatively. A brief volume adjustment on a familiar control may be possible on a straight, low-demand section of road, while the same action may be unsafe in heavy traffic, at a junction, in a work zone, during poor weather or when an assistance alert is active. The road situation, not the apparent convenience of a large screen, determines whether interaction is appropriate.
- Keep your visual priority on traffic. Check mirrors, signs, vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians before touching a control. Do not stare at a screen while the vehicle is moving.
- Prefer the least demanding control. If the vehicle supports a physical switch, steering-wheel control or reliable voice command for a simple adjustment, use that instead of searching a touchscreen. The EQS manual’s descriptions of driver-screen touch and steering-wheel touch controls are model-specific examples, not universal features.
- Make one short change at a time. Adjust volume or accept a clear voice command, then return attention fully to the road. Do not chain several settings together.
- Do not type or read messages. NHTSA specifically advises pulling over and parking before reading or sending a text. The same stop-first standard is prudent for composing messages, browsing applications or reviewing lengthy notifications.
- Do not explore unfamiliar menus. Learning a new interface belongs in the driveway or a legally permitted parked location, not in moving traffic.
Keep the passenger display separate from the driver’s task
In the EQS example, the front-passenger display is for the passenger, and the March 2022 manual tells the driver to avoid looking at it while driving. Treat a passenger screen as off-limits to the driver unless your exact manual clearly specifies another arrangement. A passenger can select entertainment, manage a search or read information without the driver turning toward that display.
Passengers should also avoid presenting content that demands the driver’s attention. If a map, video, message or notification is important to the trip, the passenger can summarize it verbally while the driver continues watching traffic, or the driver can stop safely to review it. A screen’s physical location does not remove the distraction created by an interesting or urgent image.
Know when to stop instead of interact
Pull into a safe, lawful location and park before performing any task that requires sustained visual, manual or cognitive attention. This includes:
- Reading or sending text messages and email
- Entering a new destination or changing several route options
- Searching contacts, applications, music libraries or online content
- Changing unfamiliar vehicle, connectivity or privacy settings
- Troubleshooting a frozen display, warning message or failed phone connection
- Watching passenger-screen content or reviewing a long notification
Stopping must be consistent with traffic conditions and local law. A shoulder, curb or emergency area may not be an appropriate place to use a screen unless an actual emergency and the law permit it. Choose a designated parking area, service area or other safe location whenever possible.

Build a low-distraction control routine
Use a departure checklist
- Seat, mirrors and restraint adjusted
- Destination entered and guidance confirmed
- Audio source and volume selected
- Climate set
- Nonessential alerts silenced
- Passenger assigned to communication and entertainment tasks
- Phone secured and not needed for manual operation
Use a simple hierarchy while moving
- Keep driving attention on the traffic environment.
- Use a familiar physical or steering-wheel control for an essential, brief change when conditions permit.
- Use a voice command only if your vehicle supports it reliably and the command does not require visual confirmation or repeated correction.
- Defer touchscreen navigation, typing and browsing until parked.
If a voice system misunderstands you, stop trying to repair the conversation while moving. Repeated commands can be as cognitively demanding as manual menu use.

How to learn an unfamiliar three-screen system safely
Manufacturers use different names, gestures, icons and driving lockouts. Before relying on a feature, verify each item in the exact owner’s manual:

Do not infer safety from screen size, a seamless glass panel or marketing language. The available evidence here does not establish a controlled safety test comparing triple-screen arrangements, and it does not rank one interface as safer than another.
Legal and software limits vary
Distracted-driving and device-use laws differ by jurisdiction. Some places restrict handheld phones, texting or any use of a device while moving; the exact rule may depend on the road, vehicle and driver. Check the law where you are driving rather than relying on a universal rule.
Feature availability also changes with model year, trim, market, software release and subscription status. A control shown in a Mercedes-Benz EQS manual may not exist in another vehicle, and a later software update may rename or relocate a function. Use the current manual for your vehicle and market as the authority for operation and restrictions.

Troubleshoot without creating a new distraction
The screen is frozen or not responding
Keep driving attention on the road and do not repeatedly tap, reboot or search menus while moving. If the issue affects a safety-critical warning or prevents essential information from appearing, follow the vehicle’s manual for a safe stop and contact roadside assistance or the manufacturer as appropriate.
Navigation gives an unwanted route
Continue following traffic safely rather than correcting the route immediately. Ask a passenger to change it, or stop and park before entering a new destination or route preference.
A notification keeps appearing
Do not read or dismiss a sequence of alerts while moving. Let a passenger handle it, use a documented preconfigured driving mode when parked, or stop safely before changing notification settings.
Voice control misunderstands a request
Cancel the interaction and return attention to driving. Repeated corrections can require you to watch confirmation prompts or think through several alternatives; retry only after parking if the command is not straightforward.

Tell the passenger you will review it after stopping. In the EQS manual’s wording, the driver should “avoid looking at the front passenger display while driving.” That instruction reflects the risk of diverting attention, even when the content is passenger-selected.

A practical trip example
Before leaving a parking space
The driver enters the destination, confirms the route, selects audio, sets climate and asks the passenger to manage messages. The driver identifies the physical volume control and checks that the driver display shows the expected speed and warnings.
During a normal stretch of road
The driver watches traffic and uses only a familiar, brief control if a change is necessary and conditions permit. The passenger handles entertainment or a route request without inviting the driver to view the passenger display.
When the route must change
The passenger enters the new destination. If no passenger is available, the driver continues safely to a suitable place to stop and park, then makes the change. The driver does not type, read messages or browse menus while the vehicle is moving.
Bottom line
A triple-screen cabin is safest when it reduces decisions during the drive rather than adding more things to watch. Learn the exact division of labor in your vehicle, configure navigation, audio, climate and notifications before moving, keep the driver’s gaze on traffic, and delegate passenger-screen tasks. When an operation takes more than a brief, familiar adjustment—or when traffic makes any interaction uncertain—stop and park first. The Mercedes-Benz EQS MBUX Hyperscreen illustrates the principle, but only your vehicle’s current owner’s manual and local law define your system’s controls and restrictions.
