How to Tell Whether a Car Is Safe to Drive After Body Damage

A running car is not necessarily a safe car after a collision. Use this guide to identify tow-now warning signs, understand hidden restraint and mechanical damage, and verify scans, repairs, and ADAS calibration before returning to the road.

By CarCody Team

A car that starts, idles, and moves after a collision is not automatically safe to drive. Stop and arrange a tow if the crash affected steering or suspension, a drivetrain or coolant fluid is leaking, or an airbag or other safety system has deployed or been disabled. Those conditions can make continued driving dangerous even when the exterior damage looks minor.

If the damage appears limited to a body panel, the safest course is still a professional collision assessment before normal use. Hidden damage can affect seat belts, airbag sensors, brakes, steering, suspension, wiring, or driver-assistance sensors. Ask the repair facility what it inspected, which diagnostic scans were performed, whether the manufacturer requires repairs or calibration, and what results support returning the vehicle to the road.

The quickest decision: drive cautiously, or stop and tow?

Use the table below as a triage guide, not as a roadworthiness certificate. A vehicle can have serious hidden damage without showing every symptom listed.

What you find What to do Why it matters
Steering wheel is off-center, the car pulls, wanders, or does not respond normally Do not drive it; arrange a tow Collision force may have damaged steering or suspension components or changed wheel alignment.
Suspension is visibly bent, a wheel sits at an unusual angle, a tire rubs, or the vehicle leans Do not drive it; arrange a tow A damaged suspension, wheel, or mounting point can fail or make the car unpredictable.
Drivetrain fluid or coolant is leaking Do not drive it; arrange a tow Loss of fluid can cause overheating, engine or transmission damage, loss of lubrication, or a fire risk.
An airbag deployed, an airbag cover is damaged, or a restraint warning remains on Do not drive it until the restraint system is professionally repaired Airbags deploy once, and the crash may also have affected pretensioners, sensors, wiring, or control modules.
Brakes feel soft, the pedal travels unusually far, or the car does not stop normally Do not drive it; arrange a tow Brake, hydraulic, electronic, or structural damage can reduce stopping ability.
Accelerator, transmission selector, or park function behaves abnormally Do not drive it; arrange a tow Damage to controls or transmission-related systems can cause unintended movement or prevent secure parking.
No obvious mechanical or safety symptom, only a scuffed or dented panel Limit use and arrange a professional inspection before resuming normal driving Exterior appearance does not reveal all damage to reinforcement, sensors, restraints, or mounting points.

I-CAR identifies leaking drivetrain fluid or coolant, steering problems, and suspension problems as examples of conditions under which a collision-damaged vehicle generally should not be driven. NHTSA likewise recommends repairing, restoring, or replacing safety systems that may have been damaged in a crash. If you cannot confidently identify the damage or its effect, treat the vehicle as non-drivable and have it transported.

What to check before moving the car

Only perform checks that are safe from outside the vehicle. Do not crawl under a damaged car, pull off an airbag cover, probe connectors, or try to straighten a wheel. A roadside check can identify reasons to stop; it cannot certify the vehicle.

Look at the vehicle’s stance and the impact area

  • Walk around the car and compare the damaged side with the undamaged side. Look for a wheel that is pushed backward or inward, a tire that touches the fender or suspension, a bumper or underbody panel hanging down, or a hood, trunk, or door that will not latch.
  • Check whether glass, lamps, mirrors, or loose trim could fall off or obstruct your view. Secure nothing with improvised straps that could interfere with steering, pedals, or visibility.
  • Look underneath from a standing position for fresh liquid. Do not identify a fluid solely by color; a collision facility should determine what is leaking and whether a line, pan, radiator, or structural component is damaged.
  • Notice smoke, a fuel smell, an electrical burning smell, or rising temperature indications. Shut the vehicle off and move away if there is smoke, fire, or a strong fuel odor.

Check the controls without driving

  • With the vehicle stationary, confirm that the steering wheel turns smoothly through a small range without binding or an unusual clunk.
  • Press the brake pedal gently. A soft, sinking, or unusually long pedal is a reason not to move the car.
  • Start the engine only if there is no sign of fire, fuel leakage, or dangerous damage. Watch the instrument panel for airbag, brake, stability-control, steering, or temperature warnings.
  • Confirm that the gear selector and park function behave normally while the vehicle remains secured. Do not test a suspected transmission or parking fault on a public road.

Decide whether the car can be moved a few feet

If the vehicle is in an unsafe location, such as a traffic lane, call emergency services or roadside assistance and follow their directions. Moving a car only to a safer nearby position may be necessary, but it is not evidence that the car is roadworthy. Keep speed and distance to an absolute minimum, and stop immediately if steering, braking, noise, warning lights, or fluid leakage changes.

Why apparently cosmetic damage can hide a safety problem

Body panels are often the first thing you see, but they are not the only parts that absorb crash energy. A low-speed impact can bend a bumper reinforcement, shift a mounting point, break a sensor bracket, or damage wiring behind a panel. The same impact can affect a wheel, suspension arm, steering linkage, brake component, seat-belt pretensioner, or airbag sensor without leaving an obvious mark in the passenger compartment.

Impact location matters. Damage at a corner can reach the wheel and suspension; damage near a headlamp or grille can affect radar, cameras, wiring, cooling components, or pedestrian-protection hardware; a hit to a door or pillar can affect side-impact restraints. Vehicle design and model year determine which systems are present and what procedures apply.

Do not use a straight-looking panel, a successful engine start, or the absence of a warning light as proof that hidden damage is absent. Warning systems can be affected by wiring or sensor damage, and some faults appear only under specified operating conditions. A qualified repairer must inspect the affected systems and consult the vehicle maker’s current repair information.

Airbags, seat belts, and other restraint systems

A deployed airbag means stop

NHTSA states: “Air bags can only deploy once, so make sure you replace used air bags right away after a crash, only at an authorized repair center, and before you drive the vehicle again.” A deployed front, side, curtain, knee, or seat-mounted airbag is therefore a do-not-drive condition until the restraint system has been repaired correctly.

Replacement is not limited to the fabric cushion. The crash may have triggered seat-belt pretensioners, load limiters, impact sensors, a control module, wiring, or trim components. The repair facility should identify which parts deployed or recorded a fault and replace them according to the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not inspect an airbag yourself

Do not remove a steering-wheel or dashboard cover, unplug an airbag connector, apply power to a restraint circuit, or probe it with a meter. NHTSA warns that tampering can cause a dangerous deployment. For an airbag or restraint concern, use a qualified technician at a reputable independent repair facility or a manufacturer dealership.

Check the restraint warning, but do not rely on it alone

A warning lamp that stays on after the crash requires diagnosis. A lamp that turns off does not prove that every restraint component is undamaged, especially when the collision or repair history is unknown. Ask for a documented scan and a physical inspection of seat belts, airbags, sensors, wiring, and related modules.

Mechanical systems that can make a car unsafe

Steering and suspension

Compare the steering wheel position with how the car travels. Pulling, wandering, a new vibration, uneven tire clearance, clunking, or a wheel that appears tilted can indicate damage. Do not attempt to correct a collision-related pull with an alignment alone until the shop has checked for bent or cracked parts and damaged mounting points.

Brakes and wheels

Inspectors should check the brake system, wheel, tire, hub, and related wiring when the impact was near a corner. A soft pedal, grinding, scraping, pedal pulsation that began after the crash, or a tire losing air is a reason to stop. A temporary spare does not make a damaged wheel, hub, or suspension safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolant and drivetrain fluids

Leaking coolant can lead to overheating, while a damaged engine, transmission, differential, or hydraulic line can lose the fluid it needs to operate. Do not drive through a leak merely because the temperature gauge has not risen yet. Shut the vehicle down, keep clear of hot or pressurized components, and arrange transport.

Controls and park function

NHTSA’s safety-system guidance includes accelerator controls and transmission gear and park functions. After a crash, any sticking accelerator, abnormal gear selection, inability to select park, unexpected movement, or inability to remove the key as designed requires professional assessment before driving.

Driver-assistance systems may need scans, aiming, or calibration

Modern vehicles can contain cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, steering-angle sensors, and other equipment used by automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, parking assistance, and related features. A sensor can be displaced or its viewing area altered while the bumper or windshield damage appears minor.

Collision repair may require a preliminary diagnostic scan, physical inspection, repairs, a post-repair scan, and calibration or aiming. The exact sequence is vehicle-specific. I-CAR’s summary of Honda and Acura guidance, for example, describes minimum pre- and post-repair scans, inspections, and calibrations for vehicles involved in a collision; that position is manufacturer-specific and does not replace the current procedure for another make or model.

Questions to ask about electronic systems

  • Was the vehicle scanned before repairs and again after repairs?
  • Which fault codes were found, and were they cleared only after the underlying problem was corrected?
  • Did the impact affect a camera, radar, sensor bracket, windshield, bumper, grille, wheel alignment, or steering-angle system?
  • Does the manufacturer require static calibration, dynamic calibration, aiming, a road test, or a particular target and workspace?
  • Can the facility provide the scan and calibration results in the repair record?

A generic consumer scan tool can be useful for identifying some warnings, but it cannot establish that a collision-damaged vehicle is safe. Some faults appear only during specific operating conditions, and calibration requires vehicle-specific procedures, equipment, and measurements.

How to choose a collision repair facility

Choose a facility that can obtain the current manufacturer repair information for your exact model year and configuration, inspect mechanical and restraint systems, perform required diagnostic scans, and complete any required calibration. A shop’s ability to explain its process is more useful than a generic claim that every repair is “safe.”

Use this comparison checklist

Capability What a good answer sounds like Warning sign
Manufacturer procedures “We will identify the applicable OEM repair, scan, and calibration requirements for your VIN and model.” “We use the same process on every car.”
Mechanical inspection “We will inspect steering, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, fluids, and mounting points affected by the impact.” “The panel is the only damaged part because the car still drives.”
Restraint diagnosis “We will diagnose airbags, pretensioners, sensors, wiring, and the restraint control module, not just turn off a warning.” “We can reset the light without replacing anything.”
ADAS work “We can perform the required aiming or calibration and document the result, or we will arrange it with a qualified provider.” “No calibration is needed because the bumper looks straight.”
Documentation “You will receive a repair order listing scans, replaced safety parts, calibrations, and unresolved warnings.” “There is no written record of the checks.”

A manufacturer dealership is one option for system-specific guidance, and a reputable independent collision facility may also be appropriate when it has the required information, equipment, and training. The sources do not establish that one type of business is best for every vehicle.

What must be complete before you drive the repaired vehicle

Before accepting the vehicle for ordinary driving, review the repair documentation with the technician. Make sure it identifies the affected area, structural or mechanical findings, replaced restraint components, diagnostic scans, and any calibration or aiming performed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this handover checklist

  • All airbags and seat-belt components that deployed or were damaged have been replaced according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • There are no unresolved brake, steering, restraint, powertrain, or temperature warnings.
  • Steering wheel position, braking response, tire clearance, ride height, and wheel alignment have been checked when relevant to the impact.
  • Leaks have been repaired and fluid levels have been verified.
  • Required cameras, radar, and other driver-assistance sensors have been inspected and calibrated or aimed.
  • Doors, hood, trunk, seat belts, lights, mirrors, and latches operate correctly.
  • The shop explains any feature that remains unavailable and why it does not affect safe operation, or tells you not to drive until it is corrected.

Take a controlled first drive

After the facility confirms the repair is complete, begin in a low-traffic area. Check for pulling, vibration, new noises, warning lights, abnormal braking, steering changes, fluid smells, or driver-assistance alerts. Do not use a first drive to test a suspected fault at highway speed. Stop and return to the facility if anything differs from the pre-crash behavior or from what the technician explained.

When the damage is uncertain or the car has already been driven

If you drove after the collision and then noticed a warning, leak, pull, vibration, overheating, or restraint problem, stop as soon as it is safe and arrange an inspection. Continuing because the vehicle has already covered some distance does not reduce the risk.

If the car was towed or stored after the crash, tell the repairer about every symptom you observed, even if it disappeared. Include the impact direction, whether the vehicle struck a curb or pothole, whether airbags deployed, and whether any warning appeared before the vehicle was moved. Those details help the technician choose the relevant inspection and scan procedures.

Insurance, records, and legal limits

Keep photographs, towing receipts, estimates, scan reports, calibration reports, and the final repair order. These records show what was inspected and help a later technician understand the vehicle’s repair history. Ask the insurer or repair facility which documentation is required for your claim, because claim procedures vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is general U.S.-oriented safety guidance, not a determination that any particular vehicle is roadworthy. NHTSA’s historical legal interpretation notes that state law can differ. The vehicle maker, model year, impact location, symptoms, and repair history can change what must be inspected or calibrated, so use current manufacturer procedures and qualified professionals for an individual decision.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a running engine proves the chassis, steering, suspension, brakes, or restraints are intact.
  • Driving because the collision was described as a “fender bender” without checking what lies behind the panel.
  • Replacing a bumper or lamp and skipping scans or calibration that the manufacturer requires.
  • Clearing warning lights without diagnosing the underlying fault.
  • Removing an airbag cover or probing restraint wiring at home.
  • Judging a repair only by paint match and panel gaps.
  • Accepting “no codes” from a generic scanner as proof that the vehicle is safe.
  • Testing a damaged vehicle on public roads when a tow is available.
