If your hand keeps changing a Lexus setting by touching the steering-wheel controls, first determine whether you are making accidental contact or the switch is activating on its own. While parked, change your grip and wheel position, then check the exact owner’s manual for your model year and trim. Some Lexus vehicles let you reassign what certain switch areas control, but the available settings are vehicle-specific and no Lexus-wide “disable all buttons” option is established. A control that activates without contact, sticks, or responds inconsistently needs inspection by a Lexus dealer or qualified technician.
Identify what is actually happening

That is a firsthand account, not evidence that every Lexus steering wheel has the same shape, touch area, or sensitivity. If the change happens only when your hand or a finger crosses a particular pad, physical contact is the most likely explanation.

A brief note such as “right palm touches the right pad during low-speed turns” is more useful to a service adviser than a general description that the wheel is “too sensitive.”

A button works, but its assigned function is unwanted
Some Lexus settings allow the functions assigned to steering-wheel switch areas to be changed. In that case, the switch is responding normally; the problem is that the current assignment makes an accidental touch disruptive. A different assignment may reduce the consequence of a brush, but it does not physically disable the switch or make the surface immune to contact.
The vehicle responds with no contact
A change that occurs while your hands are clear, a switch that stays active after you release it, or intermittent operation suggests a fault rather than a hand-position problem. Do not tape over the area, install a generic guard, or order a replacement assembly before the vehicle and part fitment are diagnosed. Steering-wheel controls are safety-adjacent vehicle electronics, and an obstruction can create a new problem.
Why model year and trim determine the answer
Lexus steering-wheel layouts and customization menus are not universal. Give the model year, model, trim, and equipment level before following button-by-button advice. A head-up display, for example, can change which steering-wheel switch options appear.

Make safe hand and wheel adjustments while parked
Changing your grip can solve genuine contact without modifying the vehicle. Do all setup work before moving. The 2024 NX 350h owner manual specifically cautions against adjusting the steering wheel while driving.
- Park securely. Stop in a safe location, select the appropriate transmission position, and keep the vehicle stationary while you investigate.
- Record the contact point. Identify whether the left or right hand, palm, thumb, or a finger reaches the switch. Note whether the contact occurs during a turn, a lane change, or a straight-line grip.
- Set the wheel for reach and visibility. Adjust tilt and telescope so you can see the instruments and operate the wheel comfortably without stretching. Make the adjustment only while parked, then lock the wheel in place.
- Try a secure alternate grip. Keep both hands in a position that gives you dependable control while leaving the problem pad clear. Do not adopt a loose or awkward grip merely to avoid a button.
- Check the result before driving. Turn the wheel through the range you normally use while stationary and confirm that your hand does not slide onto the control surface. Reposition the wheel again if the setting forces your wrist against the pad.
- Recheck after entering the vehicle. Different seating distance, a coat, or a steering-wheel tilt can change where your fingers rest. Set the position consistently before each trip rather than reaching for the adjustment once underway.
This is practical advice based on the reported contact pattern, not a Lexus-prescribed hand-position remedy. If you cannot maintain a comfortable, secure grip without pressing a switch, stop trying to work around it and ask a technician to inspect the wheel and controls.
Look for steering-switch customization in the matching manual
Use the owner manual for the exact year and trim. Search its index or digital text for “steering switches,” “customizable steering-wheel switches,” “personalized settings,” “head-up display,” or “switch layout.” Lexus manuals and how-to resources are available through My Lexus. A dealer can identify the correct manual when the vehicle’s equipment is unclear.
What a customization setting can change
The 2022 NX settings form records three left-side choices—Audio, Climate, and Custom—and two right-side choices—Display and Custom. Those labels show that some vehicles can change which feature a pad controls. A Custom choice may expose additional assignments, but the form does not establish the available sub-options for every trim.

On certain HUD-equipped vehicles, the 2024 NX 350h manual includes a customizable steering-wheel-switch topic. That confirms the subject is addressed in the vehicle documentation, not that every switch can be turned off. Read the explanatory text beside each setting and note whether it applies to the equipment installed in your vehicle.
How to change a setting without guessing
- Write down the model year, exact model, trim, and whether the vehicle has a head-up display.
- Open the corresponding owner manual or personalized-settings document from Lexus.
- Locate the steering-switch customization section and compare the listed left- and right-side layouts with the physical wheel.
- Change only one assignment at a time, following the manual’s displayed menu names. Do not infer a menu path from a different year’s screen.
- With the vehicle parked, test the new assignment and verify that the rest of the controls still perform the functions you need.
- Record the original setting so you can restore it if the new layout is less useful.

Understand Winter gloves mode before enabling it
The 2022 NX Lexus Personalized Settings form lists Winter gloves mode as off by default and says it increases the sensitivity of the steering-wheel arrow switches. That is intended to help inputs register when the driver is wearing gloves; it is not an accidental-press prevention mode.

If unwanted presses involve arrow switches, enabling this mode could make the symptom more noticeable. Glove thickness, fit, and the way you hold the wheel also vary, so gloves are not an established solution. Check the form or manual for your own vehicle before changing the option, and leave it off if greater sensitivity makes unintended inputs more frequent.

Do not add an unapproved cover or button guard
No source establishes a general-purpose Lexus steering-wheel cover, overlay, or guard as a safe and effective way to prevent accidental presses. A cover can alter the wheel’s feel, interfere with access to a needed control, catch a finger during a turn, or obscure a switch so that you press the wrong area. An adhesive overlay can also leave residue or prevent normal service access.
Because steering-wheel controls are integrated into a vehicle-specific assembly, any accessory would need explicit compatibility and safety approval for your model and trim. The absence of such evidence is a reason not to improvise a physical barrier, not an invitation to test one while driving.

Replacement controls are repair parts, not prevention products
A Lexus parts catalog lists a specific radio-control assembly for a compatible TX 350 application. That demonstrates that replacement components exist, but it does not make a replacement appropriate for an NX, another trim, or a driver who is merely brushing a normally functioning switch.
Part numbers, connector types, wheel assemblies, and vehicle applications must be verified before ordering. A technician should confirm that the control itself is defective and identify the correct component for the vehicle. Replacing a sound assembly will not change the location of the buttons and therefore will not solve ordinary hand contact.
A practical decision path
- Classify the event. Contact-only changes point toward grip or layout; no-contact, stuck, or inconsistent behavior points toward diagnosis.
- Make the vehicle safe to adjust. Park before changing steering-wheel position, settings, or grip.

- Escalate faults. If activation occurs without contact or the switch feels abnormal, arrange a Lexus dealer or qualified-technician inspection.
- Reject improvised barriers. Do not cover or obstruct controls without Lexus-specific approval.
What “disable the buttons” means in practice
The question “Is there any way to disable the buttons?” has no single Lexus-wide answer established by the available manuals. Some vehicles provide configurable layouts that change the function assigned to a switch area. That is different from electrically disabling the control, removing it, or preventing a touch from registering.
