Read an EV battery health report by first identifying what its state-of-health (SoH) percentage is measured against, how it was calculated, and under what conditions it was recorded. SoH usually describes remaining battery capacity or energy relative to a stated reference. It is not the same as the charge currently in the pack (state of charge, or SoC), does not by itself predict driving range, and is not automatically a warranty decision.
The useful interpretation is therefore a chain of evidence: vehicle and report identity, capacity denominator, test method, units, test conditions, cell and fault data, trend, and the applicable warranty procedure.

How to read an EV battery health report and understand state of health
Start with the report’s definition rather than the large percentage at the top. A value such as 92% is meaningful only when you know whether it represents usable energy, nominal capacity, rated capacity, or another reference; whether it came from the battery-management system (BMS), an automaker diagnostic routine, or an independent test; and what the vehicle and test conditions were.

SoH is a condition or capacity indicator. European Commission battery-parameter guidance describes capacity fade in relation to the charge a battery can deliver compared with its original rated capacity and treats EV SoH as a percentage datapoint. In practical terms, a report may be expressing an estimate of how much of a defined original capacity remains. The definition is not guaranteed to be identical between manufacturers or reporting services.

State of charge (SoC)
SoC is the battery’s present charge level, the figure you see while charging or driving. An EV showing 80% SoC has approximately 80% of its available charge at that moment; it does not have 80% SoH. SoH changes gradually with use and age, while SoC can move from low to high within a charging session.
A manufacturer display is not a universal definition
Kia’s 2026 owner manual describes its Battery Health display as “an indicator of the energy that the battery can store.” The manual says the display is set to 100% at shipment and reflects a reduced energy ratio as the vehicle is used. That wording explains Kia’s display; it should not be treated as a formal definition for every EV.
Step 1: Confirm exactly which vehicle and report you are reading
Record the details before interpreting any number. A diagnostic provider may support one model year but not another, or may expose different battery fields on different vehicles. Coverage documents from Autocom and Delphi DS Diagnostics illustrate that available outputs vary by make, model, year, and tool.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Make, model, trim and model year.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN), registration identifier, or the report’s unique reference.
- Odometer reading and the report date and time.
- Name of the issuer, workshop, diagnostic tool, or test program.
- Battery type and, where listed, pack part number or revision.
- Confirmation that the tool explicitly supports that vehicle and model year.
If any of these are missing, ask the issuer to correct the report or explain why the field is unavailable. A percentage detached from vehicle identity cannot be reliably compared with another car’s percentage.
Step 2: Find the SoH denominator and calculation method
Look for a definition, footnote, or test description that answers two questions: “Compared with what?” and “Calculated how?”

Identify the reference capacity
Common reference terms include rated, nominal, usable, net, gross, and energy available to the vehicle. They are not interchangeable. Gross pack energy can include a buffer that the driver cannot access; usable energy is the portion made available for propulsion and charging control. A report that uses usable capacity can show a different percentage from one that uses nominal or rated capacity even when both describe the same physical pack.
Do not infer the denominator from the vehicle’s advertised battery size. Ask the issuer to state the reference value and units used in the calculation, including whether the reference is vehicle-specific or a generic database value.

Identify whether the value is estimated or test-derived
A BMS may estimate capacity from charging, discharging, current, voltage, temperature, and historical data. An automaker’s diagnostic routine may run a prescribed procedure. An independent service may derive a result from a controlled charge, discharge, road test, or a combination. None of these categories is automatically accurate or inaccurate. The important information is who produced the value, what procedure was used, and what uncertainty or repeatability information is disclosed.
European Commission guidance calls for reliable, accurate, and reproducible methods where parameters are not yet standardized. SAE International’s information report J3356/2_202609, issued September 28, 2026, addresses BMS SoH definitions, calculation methods, influencing factors, and reporting. Its issue date is a publication fact, not a degradation statistic or a universal test requirement.
Step 3: Read capacity and energy fields without mixing units
Reports may show ampere-hours (Ah), kilowatt-hours (kWh), voltage, current, or a percentage. Compare like with like and retain the test context.

| Report field | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SoH (%) | A condition or remaining-capacity indicator relative to the report’s stated reference. | Read only with the denominator and method. |
| Capacity (Ah) | Electrical charge capacity measured in ampere-hours. | Compare with an Ah reference for the same vehicle and test definition. |
| Energy (kWh) | Stored or deliverable energy under a stated voltage and test context. | Compare with a matching gross, nominal, or usable-energy reference. |
| Voltage and current | Electrical conditions observed during the reading or test. | Use as supporting data, not as a standalone health grade. |
Ah and kWh cannot be converted with a single universal multiplier: energy depends on voltage and on how the test samples the pack. A headline SoH percentage therefore cannot establish an exact real-world range. Vehicle consumption, speed, weather, terrain, tires, heating or cooling, payload, and driving style also affect range.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 4: Record SoC and every stated test condition
Write down the SoC at the time of the reading and any conditions the report supplies. Battery power and measured behavior can vary with temperature, and procedures may require a particular charge level, drive cycle, rest period, or charge/discharge duration.
- Starting and ending SoC.
- Battery and ambient temperature, if available.
- Whether the pack was resting, charging, driving, or recently fast-charged.
- Test duration, distance, and charger type.
- Any required calibration, balancing, or rest instruction.
- Software, diagnostic-tool, or BMS version when listed.
Preserve these details when sharing the report. Two readings taken at different temperatures or SoC levels may not be directly comparable, even if they are only weeks apart.
Step 5: Use cell balance, temperatures, and fault codes as context
A useful report contains more than one number. Workshop diagnostic descriptions identify health estimates, capacity loss, cell balance or voltage deviations, and EV-system faults as possible data. Diagnostic systems such as the MaxiSys Ultra EV manual also describe pack SoC/SoH, voltage, current, voltage delta, and temperature for supported vehicles.
| Additional field | What to look for | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Cell or module voltage balance | Whether measured cells or modules are closely aligned under the stated conditions. | A deviation alone does not identify its cause, permanence, or safety implication. |
| Voltage delta | The spread between the highest and lowest observed voltage. | It is not a universal pass/fail threshold across vehicles and operating states. |
| Temperature readings | Pack or module temperatures and any unevenness. | A single snapshot does not establish long-term thermal performance. |
| Fault codes | Stored, pending, or active EV-system and battery-management faults. | A code needs vehicle-specific diagnosis; clearing it is not a repair. |
Treat an unusual deviation, high temperature, or fault code as a reason to obtain an explanation from a qualified EV technician or the report issuer. Do not open, probe, or repair a high-voltage pack based on a report; high-voltage work requires appropriately trained personnel and equipment.

Step 6: Treat one report as a snapshot and trends as conditional
A single SoH value describes the vehicle at one point in time. To assess change, compare repeat reports only when they concern the same vehicle, use a compatible method and denominator, and identify equivalent test conditions. If one report is a BMS estimate and the next is an independent capacity test, the difference may reflect methodology rather than battery change.
Do not calculate a degradation rate from two unlike reports. For a useful trend, keep a record of date, mileage, SoC, temperature, method, reference capacity, and any software or pack changes. A replacement battery, BMS update, or recalibration can also break continuity with earlier readings.
What an SoH percentage can—and cannot—tell a buyer
What it can indicate
- A lower measured capacity generally means less energy can be stored or delivered under the report’s defined conditions.
- When the denominator and method are documented, repeat readings can help track change in that vehicle.
- Supporting fields can reveal issues that deserve technical investigation even when the headline percentage looks acceptable.
What it cannot establish alone
- A guaranteed driving range or a fixed number of miles remaining.
- Remaining battery life, fire risk, or overall vehicle safety.
- Eligibility for a warranty repair or replacement.
- A universal grade such as “good,” “bad,” or “needs replacement.”
Assess the report with the vehicle’s condition, a road test, charging behavior, fault history, service records, and warranty status. The report is evidence for a decision, not a substitute for inspecting the car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare BMS, OEM, and independent reports on the same axes
When you have a choice of report types, compare their information rather than assuming one category is always superior.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Source of value | Was it read from the BMS, generated by an OEM diagnostic routine, or derived by another test? |
| Capacity basis | Is the percentage based on rated, nominal, usable, or another capacity? |
| Vehicle coverage | Does the provider support this exact make, model, trim, and model year? |
| Conditions | What were SoC, temperature, duration, distance, charging state, and rest requirements? |
| Data detail | Does it include capacity units, cell balance, temperatures, voltage delta, and fault codes? |
| Uncertainty and repeatability | Does the provider describe expected variation or a way to reproduce the test? |
| Documentation | Can the issuer explain every field and provide the procedure or definition? |
Two percentages are not directly comparable when their methods or denominators differ. Ask for the underlying figures and definitions before treating a numerical difference as battery degradation.

Warranty language is a separate question
An SoH report does not automatically decide a warranty claim. Read the warranty for the exact vehicle, jurisdiction, model year, mileage and time limits, exclusions, transfer rules, and required diagnostic procedure. Some manufacturers require an authorized dealer test or a prescribed confirmation process; an independent report may support a conversation without satisfying the claim procedure.
US durability regulations provide a useful example of why scope matters. Under 40 CFR § 86.1815-27, the covered compliance framework specifies 80% of certified usable battery energy after 5 years or 62,000 miles and 70% after 8 years or 100,000 miles. These are regulatory durability requirements for covered light-duty vehicles, measured within that rule’s framework. They are not a universal consumer rating and do not replace an individual vehicle’s warranty threshold or test.
Obtaining a report safely and realistically
For a buyer or owner
- Ask the seller, dealer, or service provider for the complete report, not just a screenshot of the SoH percentage.
- Verify the VIN, mileage, date, vehicle identity, capacity denominator, units, method, and test conditions.
- Ask whether the value is a BMS estimate, OEM routine result, or independent test, and request the stated uncertainty.
- Check for cell-balance data, temperatures, voltage delta, and active or stored EV-system faults.
- Compare the result with the applicable warranty wording and ask who must perform a warranty test.
- During a test drive, check charging initiation, charge rate, warning messages, regenerative braking, and energy consumption without treating any one observation as a substitute for the report.
For a qualified technician
A professional diagnostic platform may retrieve vehicle-specific pack data through on-vehicle diagnostics, but menus and coverage vary. The MaxiSys Ultra EV manual describes SOC/SoH, voltage, current, voltage delta, and temperature data for supported vehicles. Confirm model-year coverage before purchasing or scheduling a test, and follow the tool maker’s high-voltage safety procedures. A generic consumer OBD adapter should not be assumed to provide battery-health data for every EV.
Common interpretation mistakes and the correction
| Mistake | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|
| “The dashboard says 80%, so SoH is 80%.” | The dashboard percentage is SoC, the current charge level. |
| “Every 90% report means the same thing.” | Check the denominator, method, vehicle support, and conditions. |
| “A lower SoH gives an exact range forecast.” | Range also depends on consumption and operating conditions. |
| “A cell deviation proves a failed module.” | It is a diagnostic clue requiring vehicle-specific investigation. |
| “The US 70% figure is the warranty cutoff for every used EV.” | It is a scoped regulatory durability requirement, not a universal warranty rule. |
| “An OBD dongle works on all EVs.” | Coverage and accessible data vary by make, model year, and tool. |
Questions to ask before relying on the result
- What exact capacity or energy reference equals 100% in this report?
- Is the figure estimated, measured, or calculated from a prescribed routine?
- Which vehicle software, battery version, and model-year coverage were used?
- What were the SoC, temperature, charging state, duration, and rest conditions?
- What uncertainty or repeatability should I expect?
- Are there active, pending, or historical battery and EV-system faults?
- Do the warranty terms require a manufacturer or dealer test?
- Which findings require an EV technician to inspect the vehicle?
The practical reading rule
Use the SoH percentage as an entry point, not a verdict. A defensible interpretation states the vehicle, date, reference capacity, method, conditions, supporting measurements, and warranty context in one record. If the report cannot supply those basics, treat the number as limited evidence and obtain clarification before making a purchase or warranty decision.
