A crossing limit in one vehicle’s manual is not a promise that the battery or electronics will survive every flood, current, or period of submersion. If a crossing is genuinely unavoidable, use the exact instructions for your truck, model year, market, and configuration; move slowly through known, shallow water; and arrange qualified inspection after significant or prolonged submersion.
The manufacturer guidance currently available for U.S.-market electric pickups is not an independent comparison test. It shows that water limits and procedures differ substantially, so no universal “safe depth” or battery-protection ranking can be inferred.

Why water protection starts before you reach the water
Floodwater can conceal holes, loose surfaces, debris, drop-offs and a current strong enough to move a vehicle. Water can also rise while you are deciding what to do. The safest battery and electronics strategy is therefore route selection: stop, turn around, wait for the water to recede, or use a route that stays on dry ground.
Do not treat a published fording figure as a general assurance against flooding. The figure applies only to the named vehicle, model-year documentation and stated conditions. Tire size, ride height, equipment, loading, water movement, ground surface and the actual entry and exit can all change the risk. The sources reviewed here are manufacturer manuals and guidance, not equivalent laboratory or field tests across brands.

Three rules that apply to every electric pickup
- Use the current owner’s manual for your exact vehicle. A specification for a different model year, trim, market or configuration may not apply.
- Never enter deep, fast-moving, cross-current or unknown water simply because it appears below a published depth.
- If the truck has been significantly or persistently submerged, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s inspection and recovery instructions.
What the current manufacturer guidance actually says
The following comparison is limited to U.S.-market material identified for the named vehicles. “Not stated” means the cited document does not give that value; it is not permission to choose your own limit.

These instructions are not interchangeable. For example, the Rivian guide specifies a speed and ride-height setting, while the Ford manual gives a wheel-hub height restriction without a corresponding speed figure. The Cybertruck page supplies no fording limit at all. None of these documents establishes that one brand’s battery protection is better than another’s.
How to decide whether to enter
1. Stop and assess the route
Before the tires touch water, identify the full path, including the exit. Estimate depth at the deepest point rather than judging only the edge. Look for a firm surface, a safe place to turn around and signs that the water is moving across the road. A hidden hole, soft shoulder or submerged object can make a shallow-looking crossing unsafe.
Do not proceed when the water is deep and fast flowing, when a crosscurrent is present, when you cannot establish the bottom, or when the exit is blocked or too soft to support the truck. Ford’s 2025 Lightning manual specifically says not to attempt a deep, fast-flowing body of water. Rivian specifically prohibits driving in crosscurrents and tells drivers to check both depth and ground surface.
2. Confirm the vehicle-specific limit
Open the current manual for your vehicle before traveling in areas where flooding is possible. Confirm the model year, market, drive configuration, tire and wheel setup, ride-height options and any load restrictions. A limit measured at the bottom of the wheel hubs is not equivalent to a limit measured in inches, and neither is a guarantee against damage.

If your manual does not state a water-fording limit, do not invent one from another vehicle’s specification. The Cybertruck flood page reviewed here does not provide a routine crossing limit; it gives instructions for moving a truck before a flood and for handling prolonged submersion.
3. Prepare exactly as the manual requires
Preparation differs by vehicle. The 2023 U.S. Rivian R1T guide calls for Off-Road All-Terrain mode and Highest ride height, evenly distributed gear, closed doors and storage compartments, and open windows for emergency exit. Ford’s Lightning instructions say to keep the doors fully closed. Those are model-specific directions, not a universal checklist; follow your own manual where it differs.

Do not rely on an aftermarket depth pole, waterproof cover, sealant or generic emergency kit to make a flood crossing safe. The guidance reviewed does not recommend any such accessory for protecting a battery or electronics.
How to drive a permitted crossing
Enter slowly and avoid creating a wave
Both Ford and Rivian emphasize a slow entry. Entering too quickly can create unnecessary splash and a bow wave that raises water around openings and components. Ford says to minimize unnecessary splashing. Rivian says to enter slowly, then maintain a steady speed without stopping.
Do not interpret “steady speed” as an invitation to accelerate. For an R1T, the guide’s limit is up to 5 mph (8 km/h), and the 2026 Rivian article likewise says to stay under 5 mph. Ford does not state a crossing speed in the cited manual; use the slowest controlled pace that keeps the vehicle stable and complies with the manual.

Keep the vehicle controlled
Stay on the firmest known line, avoid abrupt steering and do not stop in moving water. Rivian instructs drivers not to let water submerge the hood. If the water deepens unexpectedly or the truck begins sinking into soft ground, the 2026 Rivian guidance says to back out slowly when that can be done safely. Do not continue forward merely to reach a published depth figure.

For the Lightning, keep the doors fully closed while crossing. For the R1T, the 2023 guide says to leave windows open for emergency exit while also closing doors and storage compartments. This difference illustrates why a generic electric-truck procedure is unsafe: use the instructions written for your model.
Abort when conditions change
Turn around before the water reaches the vehicle’s stated limit, before the current becomes difficult to control, or whenever the bottom no longer feels firm. A published maximum assumes the conditions described by the manufacturer; it does not account for every combination of current, debris, slope, load and vehicle condition.
What to check immediately after a normal crossing
Move to a safe, dry location before carrying out checks. If the vehicle behaves abnormally, stop driving and request qualified assistance rather than trying to diagnose high-voltage equipment yourself.
Ford F-150 Lightning checks
Ford’s 2025 manual directs the driver to check the brakes, horn, lights and steering after reaching safety. Test each function at low speed in a clear area. If a function is missing, weak, delayed or accompanied by a warning message, park the truck and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

Rivian R1T checks
Rivian directs drivers to test the brakes and clear the horn. The guide specifies holding the horn for two seconds and repeating that action four more times. Perform the check only where it is safe to do so, and stop using the truck if braking, steering, warning messages or other systems are abnormal.
Do not confuse a successful check with proof of waterproofing
A truck that starts, moves and passes a quick function check may still require inspection if water reached areas the driver cannot evaluate. The post-crossing checks identify immediate operating problems; they do not convert a model-specific limit into a guarantee against later damage.

Stop operating the vehicle
Rivian states: “Rivian vehicles are not designed to withstand being submerged in water for long periods of time.” Its current guidance recommends service-center inspection after significant submersion. Do not restart or drive the vehicle to “dry it out.” Arrange recovery and inspection through the manufacturer, an authorized service center or qualified vehicle-recovery personnel.
Tesla’s current Cybertruck owner’s manual says that after prolonged submersion you should treat the vehicle as if it has been in an accident, contact your insurer, and “Do not attempt to operate the vehicle until an authorized shop has inspected it.” The same guidance says to tow it at least 50 feet (15 m) from structures or other combustible materials.

Ford’s emergency response guide for 2022–2024 Lightning vehicles, marked November 2025, warns that a damaged electric vehicle submerged in water can present a high-voltage shock hazard and potential battery-fire risk. It cautions against touching high-voltage components or orange cables and describes the need for appropriate protective equipment.

That guide is written for emergency responders. Its electrical-disabling and extraction procedures are not owner instructions. As an owner, keep people away from a suspect or submerged truck, do not touch orange cables or exposed components, and call emergency responders or qualified recovery and service personnel.
Respond to fire or heating signs
Tesla’s Cybertruck guidance says to step away and contact first responders if there is fire, smoke, audible popping or hissing, or heating. Do not open panels, connect a charger or attempt an improvised repair while waiting for help. Keep the vehicle away from structures and other combustible materials as directed by the manual and responders.
Common mistakes that increase risk
- Borrowing another truck’s limit: The R1T’s 39-inch figure does not apply to a Lightning, Cybertruck or a different R1 configuration.
- Measuring only the entrance: The deepest point and the exit may be substantially different. Assess the entire route.
- Ignoring water movement: Deep, fast-flowing water and crosscurrents are specifically identified hazards.
- Entering quickly: Speed creates splash and a wave; the guidance calls for slow entry and controlled movement.
- Stopping in the crossing: Rivian instructs R1T drivers to maintain a steady speed without stopping.
- Continuing after the hood approaches the water: Rivian says not to let water submerge the hood.
- Assuming normal operation means no inspection is needed: Significant or prolonged submersion requires manufacturer-directed inspection.
- Handling high-voltage hardware: Orange cables and damaged components are not owner-service items, especially after submersion.
- Adding accessories as a substitute for judgment: No reviewed manufacturer guidance supports a cover, sealant, depth pole or generic kit as protection that makes floodwater safe.
A practical decision checklist
- Stop on dry ground and decide whether turning around or waiting is safer than crossing.
- Read the current manual for the exact model year, configuration and market.
- Establish depth, current, bottom condition, obstacles and a usable exit; abandon the attempt if any of these are unknown or unsafe.
- Set only the modes, ride height, load distribution, door, compartment and window positions specified for your vehicle.
- Enter slowly, make as little splash as possible, and maintain the manual’s speed and depth limits.
- Abort if water deepens, the ground softens, the vehicle becomes difficult to control or the exit is no longer safe.
- Afterward, perform the model-specific brake, horn, light and steering checks in a safe location.
- For significant or persistent submersion, stop operating the truck, keep away from high-voltage components and arrange authorized inspection and professional recovery.
What these figures do—and do not—tell you
The 39-inch (1 m) and 5 mph (8 km/h) figures are manufacturer-stated limits for the 2023 U.S. Rivian R1T guide, repeated for R1 vehicles in a Rivian article dated March 23, 2026. The Lightning’s 2025 U.S. manual instead uses the bottom of the wheel hubs and does not state a matching speed. Tesla’s reviewed Cybertruck page concerns flood preparation and prolonged submersion, not ordinary water crossings.

Those differences are useful for planning, but they are not evidence of equivalent battery sealing, electronics protection or real-world survivability. No independent comparative testing or population statistics establish a universal ranking. The defensible approach is to avoid floodwater where possible, follow the exact current manual, and treat submersion as a potential high-voltage and battery-fire emergency rather than as an ordinary driving event.
