For a secure child car seat installation, follow the instructions for both the seat and your vehicle, use an approved belt or lower-anchor method, and check that the seat moves no more than 1 inch at the belt path. The correct belt path, recline, locking procedure, and anchor limits depend on your specific seat and vehicle.

Before you install the seat

Read the child seat manual and vehicle owner’s manual before starting. The seat manual identifies the correct belt path, approved installation methods, recline settings, and the child’s height and weight limits. The vehicle manual identifies approved seating positions and anchors, and explains how its seat belts lock. See NHTSA’s rear-facing installation guidance and forward-facing installation guidance.

Choose the right seat position and direction

Install the child seat in the back seat. Keep a child rear-facing until they reach the rear-facing height or weight limit stated for that particular seat. After that, use a forward-facing seat with a harness and keep using it within the seat’s limits. Follow the seat manual for orientation and setup details.

Choose one approved installation method

Depending on the seat and vehicle, you may secure the seat with the vehicle seat belt or the lower-anchor connectors. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers either method equally safe when used correctly. Use only a method approved by both manuals, and do not use the seat belt and lower anchors together unless both manufacturers explicitly allow it. The AAP’s seat-belt and LATCH guidance explains the distinction.

Lower-anchor use is subject to the seat and vehicle’s applicable weight limits. Check both manuals rather than assuming the anchors are permitted at every child weight. A forward-facing top tether is a separate part of the setup; it can be used with either a seat-belt or lower-anchor installation when the manuals permit it.

Install and tighten the seat

  1. Use the correct belt path. Route the seat belt or lower-anchor strap through the path marked for the seat’s current orientation. Do not twist the belt or strap.
  2. Lock the system as directed. Follow the vehicle manual’s instructions for locking the seat belt, or use the seat’s lock-off if its manual directs you to do so.
  3. Tighten the installation. Press down on the seat while removing slack from the belt or lower-anchor strap. The aim is a secure fit at the point where the seat attaches to the vehicle.
  4. Check the movement at the belt path. Grip the seat where the belt or lower anchors pass through it and test side-to-side and front-to-back movement. NHTSA says: “You should not be able to move the car seat side-to-side or front-to-back more than 1 inch when pulled at the belt path.” Movement elsewhere on the seat can be different. See NHTSA’s car seat installation tips.

Set the recline and top tether

Rear-facing recline

Use the seat’s recline indicator and manual to set the required angle. A correct angle helps keep the seat positioned as designed; do not estimate it by eye when the seat has an indicator.

Forward-facing top tether

Connect the top tether to the vehicle’s designated tether anchor and tighten it as directed by both manuals. The tether limits forward movement. Do not confuse the tether anchor with another vehicle hook or cargo attachment; use the location identified in the vehicle manual. NHTSA’s guide to vehicle and car-seat parts explains the relevant components.

  • Avoid bulky clothing beneath the harness, which can interfere with a snug fit.
