But depreciation is not uniform: model, demand, supply, age, condition, and the wider market all matter. In iSeeCars’ 2026 U.S. study, five-year depreciation ranged from 32.8% for the Lexus RX 350 to 61.2% for the Tesla Model X among the midsize SUVs listed.
What the latest five-year figures show
iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis examined more than 950,000 five-year-old used vehicles sold in the United States from March 2025 through February 2026. It compared inflation-adjusted original MSRPs with used-vehicle asking prices and modeled depreciation. These are study estimates for the vehicles included—not guaranteed values for a particular SUV. Some low-volume and discontinued models were excluded. Read the iSeeCars study.

The percentages are not dollar losses. A 40% decline on a very expensive vehicle can mean a larger cash loss than the same percentage on a less expensive one. The study’s luxury-SUV comparison also shows why the badge alone is a poor predictor: the Lexus RX 350 and G-Class retained value much better than some competitors in their respective groups. iSeeCars discusses luxury-SUV resale rankings and methodology here.
Why luxury SUVs can lose value quickly
The high price creates more room for a large dollar loss
Depreciation is a decline in market value, not a measure of whether a vehicle still works. When an SUV begins with a high MSRP, even a moderate percentage decline can erase a substantial amount of money. iSeeCars notes that luxury vehicles’ higher MSRPs create greater potential losses between their original and residual values. Its luxury-SUV analysis provides context for that price effect.

Used buyers may not pay the original luxury premium
New-car buyers may be willing to pay extra for premium materials, distinctive styling, and advanced technology. At resale, those features do not necessarily command the same premium. iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer put it this way in the 2026 study: “The used car market simply doesn’t put the same value on those traits, as confirmed by the rate of luxury vehicle depreciation.” That is an explanation of a broad pattern, not a rule that every feature or model loses value at the same rate. Supply and demand shift over time
Resale prices respond to how many similar vehicles are available and how strongly shoppers want them. Kelley Blue Book says supply, demand, and current and projected market conditions substantially affect resale value. iSeeCars links strong retention to sustained demand and loyal followings; it also cites limited production as one factor in the G-Class’s performance. Brauer interpreted the lower overall five-year depreciation in the 2026 study as a possible sign of stronger used-car demand and/or insufficient supply over the prior 12 months. That is his interpretation of the study, not proof that either factor alone caused the change. iSeeCars’ findings and KBB’s explanation of resale values discuss these influences.

Model-specific results can overwhelm category averages
A segment average describes a group, not the likely resale value of every vehicle in it. The iSeeCars figures put the Lexus RX 350’s five-year loss well below the Tesla Model X’s among the midsize SUVs listed; in the large-SUV comparison, the G-Class lost less value than the QX80. Differences in model-specific demand, supply, and other market conditions help explain why “luxury SUV” is not a precise depreciation forecast. View the 2026 model comparisons.
How to judge depreciation for a specific SUV
Use a model-specific estimate for the exact vehicle rather than treating a class average as a quote. When comparing candidates, keep the ownership period and vehicle class consistent, then check:

- Model year, trim, mileage, and condition.
- Local resale or trade-in estimates, since market conditions vary.
- Both percentage depreciation and estimated dollar loss.
- Whether the figure comes from observed used prices or a future-value projection.
That last distinction matters. iSeeCars’ 2026 figures are retrospective estimates based on used-vehicle asking prices and inflation-adjusted MSRPs. By contrast, Kelley Blue Book said the average 2026 model-year vehicle was projected to retain about 45% of its original value after five years, with its 2026 Best Resale Value award winners projected to retain around 55% or more. What owners can do to limit avoidable losses
Age and condition affect trade-in considerations along with make and model. Kelley Blue Book recommends buying nearly new and keeping up with maintenance as ways to reduce avoidable depreciation. These steps can help preserve a vehicle’s condition and value, but they cannot prevent ordinary market depreciation. KBB’s guide to beating car depreciation explains its advice.

For a vehicle already owned, keep maintenance records and assess its condition honestly when comparing valuation estimates. Treat any resale or trade-in figure as an estimate that depends on the SUV’s details and market, not as a guaranteed offer.
