1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA car battery that repeatedly dies while parked usually has one of five causes: the car is used too little or only for short trips, an electrical accessory continues drawing power, the battery is old or damaged, a terminal or cable connection is poor, or the alternator and charging system are not restoring charge. The reliable fix is to identify the cause, recharge the battery with a charger suited to its chemistry, and use a storage method that matches how long the car sits.
Do not try to recharge a weak battery by idling the car in a garage. Exhaust can accumulate in an enclosed space, and a short idle usually does not replace the energy removed from the battery. Move the vehicle outside before running the engine and follow the vehicle and charger manuals.

Why a battery goes flat while the car is parked
A parked vehicle is not electrically dead. Computers, clocks, alarm systems, immobilisers, keyless-entry modules and memory circuits continue to use a small amount of power after the ignition is switched off. The AA New Zealand explains that the battery keeps vehicle computers running when the vehicle is off. RAC guidance notes that immobilisers draw some charge and that additional devices reduce the chance of starting after a long period parked.

That normal standby load becomes significant over several weeks, particularly when the battery is old, cold, partly charged or repeatedly used for short journeys. A recurring flat battery can also indicate a fault rather than normal storage drain.

Infrequent use and short journeys
The starter motor removes a large amount of energy each time the engine starts. A brief trip may not give the alternator enough running time to put that energy back, especially with headlights, demisters, heated seats or a blower operating. If the car then sits for days, the normal standby load can finish discharging it.
The AA lists lack of use and short journeys among common causes. RAC recommends a drive of roughly 20–30 minutes after a jump-start to restore charge, while the AA generally recommends drives of 30 minutes or more as a maintenance measure.
Accessories that remain powered
Dash cameras, trackers, USB adapters, aftermarket audio equipment, alarm upgrades and other plugged-in devices can draw power when the vehicle is locked. Some are wired to an always-live circuit, so switching off the ignition does not switch them off. Disconnect nonessential equipment before storage and check that interior, boot and exterior lights actually turn off.

An old, sulfated or damaged battery
A battery can show a reasonable voltage immediately after charging yet lack the capacity to crank the engine. Repeated deep discharge, long periods at a low state of charge and age can cause sulfation or an internal failure. A test may identify a bad cell or a battery that is at the end of its service life; charging alone cannot repair those conditions.
Loose or corroded connections
White, blue or green deposits, a loose terminal clamp, a damaged earth strap or dirt between a terminal and its mating surface can restrict charging and cranking. The battery may be healthy, but the car behaves as though it is flat. Inspect visible connections and have unsafe or inaccessible cables assessed by a technician.
Alternator or charging-system fault
A slipping belt, failed alternator, regulator problem, blown fuse or wiring fault can leave the battery undercharged after every drive. If the battery repeatedly goes flat after a correct recharge, test the charging system instead of continuing to jump-start the car. A fault that remains in the vehicle can also damage a replacement battery.

How common is the symptom?
In a RAC media release dated 31 December 2025, RAC reported that flat batteries accounted for 24% of all its breakdowns on the first Monday of 2025. The figure is specific to RAC call-outs and that date, but it illustrates how often parked or underused vehicles create starting problems.
First confirm what “flat” means
Typical signs include slow cranking, a rapid clicking sound, dim dashboard illumination, no dashboard lights or a car that starts after a jump but is flat again later. Write down what happens before disconnecting anything; the pattern helps distinguish a discharged battery from a starter, immobiliser or other fault.
| Observed symptom | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Slow cranking after the car has sat | Low state of charge, weak battery, poor connection or cold-weather effect | Inspect terminals, recharge fully and arrange a battery-health test if it recurs |
| Rapid clicking and dim lights | Insufficient voltage reaching the starter | Check clamps and earth connections, then charge and test the battery |
| Starts with a jump, then is flat the next day | Battery cannot retain charge, parasitic drain or charging-system fault | Request battery, charging and parasitic-drain tests |
| Battery is flat even after a long drive | Alternator, regulator, wiring or battery failure | Stop relying on jump-starts and have the charging system tested |
| Electrical items remain on after locking | Accessory wiring, a door or boot switch, or a control-module fault | Remove add-on devices and arrange a vehicle-specific drain diagnosis |
Diagnose the cause before replacing parts
- Remove nonessential loads. Unplug dash cams, trackers, USB adapters, portable refrigerators, audio accessories and other devices. If an aftermarket alarm or audio system is suspected, note its fuse or installation details for the technician.
- Check that the vehicle really shuts down. Lock it as you normally do, verify that lights go out and allow the car’s systems to enter their normal sleep state. Do not repeatedly open doors during a test because that wakes modules and changes the result.
- Inspect the battery and cables. With the vehicle off, look for loose clamps, corrosion, damaged insulation and a loose or frayed earth connection. Do not short the terminals with a tool. Follow the owner’s manual for any battery-specific safety precautions.
- Arrange a battery-health and charging-system test. A proper test can separate a low state of charge from a bad cell or loss of capacity. The AA recommends checking the battery, charging system and any fault that could be draining it.
- Test for parasitic drain when the battery and charging system pass. There is no universal parasitic-current threshold established for every vehicle. The correct value depends on the model and the time allowed for its modules to sleep, so use the manufacturer’s specification or a qualified technician rather than applying a guessed number.
- Record the pattern. Tell the technician how long the car was parked, the weather, whether a jump-start worked, which accessories are fitted and whether the battery has been deeply discharged before. Those details can prevent a misdiagnosis.
How to recharge a flat battery safely
Use a charger designed for the battery’s chemistry and capacity. AGM and EFB batteries may require a specific mode; selecting the wrong mode can undercharge or damage them. Read both the vehicle and charger manuals before connecting anything.

- Move an internal-combustion vehicle outside before starting or running the engine. Never run it in an enclosed garage.
- Switch off the ignition and all electrical accessories. Ensure the charger is unplugged before attaching its leads.
- Connect the positive lead and negative lead exactly as the charger and vehicle manuals specify. Some vehicles require the negative connection at a designated chassis earth rather than directly on the battery terminal.
- Select the correct battery type and charging program, then start the charger. Keep the area ventilated, dry and free of sparks or flames.
- Allow the charger to complete its multistage cycle. AA New Zealand says a suitable multistage charger may take up to 48 hours to recharge a flat battery, depending on battery condition and charger capacity.
- Disconnect the charger in the order stated by its manual, then attempt a start. If the battery will not accept charge, becomes unusually hot or shows physical damage, stop and obtain professional help.
A jump-start is an emergency way to get moving, not proof that the battery has been repaired. After a successful jump, drive outside for roughly 20–30 minutes as RAC guidance suggests; a longer drive of 30 minutes or more is the AA’s general maintenance recommendation. The drive may restore some charge, but it cannot fix a bad cell, a failed alternator or a continuing electrical drain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a storage method that fits your car
| Method | Best fit | What it does | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12V smart maintainer or conditioner | Storage lasting weeks or months when a safe mains socket is available | Monitors voltage and supplies controlled maintenance charge | Must support the battery chemistry, capacity and vehicle connection method; follow fire and ventilation guidance |
| Regular proper drives | Cars that can be used routinely and driven on public roads | Lets the alternator replace starting energy while the car is operating | A short idle is not equivalent to a drive; a charging fault still needs repair |
| Accessory disconnection | Vehicles with dash cams, trackers, USB devices or aftermarket equipment | Removes avoidable parked electrical load | Does not cure an old battery, bad connection or vehicle fault |
| Battery isolation | Long-term storage where the vehicle manual permits disconnection | Stops most standby loads | May disable alarms, erase settings, trigger relearn procedures or affect electronic locks and windows |
Using a smart maintainer
The AA recommends an intelligent charger for an infrequently used car, and says it can remain connected for long periods without damaging the battery when used correctly. RAC recommends a trickle charger or conditioner, while AA New Zealand recommends a maintenance charger. A modern smart maintainer is generally the most convenient option for multi-week garage storage because it adjusts its output instead of continuously forcing a fixed charge.
Recommended Free Tools
Before buying or connecting one, confirm the battery type (including AGM or EFB), nominal voltage, capacity range, connector arrangement and whether the vehicle permits charging through its fitted terminals. A maintainer is not a substitute for diagnosing a battery that repeatedly fails a health test.

Driving the car periodically
If you choose driving rather than a maintainer, make the trip long enough for the engine to reach normal operating temperature and for the alternator to replace the starting energy. Combine errands into one proper drive instead of starting the car for a few minutes. Do not idle in the garage: besides the charging limitation, exhaust gases can accumulate without warning.
Disconnecting accessories
Remove plug-in devices before locking the vehicle. For hard-wired equipment, use its parking-mode switch or have the installation changed so it shuts down at the correct voltage, provided that configuration is approved for the device and vehicle. Check that a dash cam or tracker is not being powered from an always-live outlet.
Isolating the battery
Only disconnect the battery when the vehicle manufacturer permits it and you understand the consequences. Some cars lose radio presets or window calibration; others require a security code, steering-angle relearn or other procedure. An isolation switch can also disable the alarm or prevent remote locking. Keep the manual’s reconnection instructions with the vehicle.
When charging is not enough
Replace the battery when testing identifies a bad cell, when it has reached the end of its service life, or when it repeatedly fails to hold charge after a correct recharge. A battery that has been deeply discharged several times may be permanently weakened even if it still starts the engine occasionally.
Before fitting a replacement, confirm that the alternator is charging correctly, terminals and earths are sound, and no parasitic drain remains. Otherwise the new battery can go flat in the same way. Match the replacement’s size, terminal layout, capacity, cold-cranking rating and chemistry to the vehicle. Cars designed for AGM or EFB batteries may require that type and may need battery-management-system registration after installation; follow the exact model instructions.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Starting the car for five minutes in the garage: do not do it. Move outside and use a suitable charger or a proper drive.
- Assuming a jump-start solved the problem: have the battery and charging system tested if it goes flat again.
- Leaving a dash cam or USB adapter connected: unplug it or verify that its parking mode and wiring are appropriate.
- Replacing the battery without testing the car: diagnose alternator output, connections and parked-current draw first.
- Using a generic charger setting: select the mode specified for the battery’s chemistry and capacity.
- Applying a universal parasitic-drain number: use the vehicle manufacturer’s specification or a qualified technician’s measurement.
- Disconnecting power without checking the manual: confirm effects on alarms, settings, locks and electronic relearn procedures.
A practical garage-storage plan
- Fully charge the battery with a compatible smart charger.
- Inspect and clean accessible terminals and verify that clamps and earth connections are secure.
- Unplug all nonessential accessories and confirm that lights switch off when the car is locked.
- If mains power is available, connect a compatible 12V maintainer and check it periodically according to its instructions.
- If no mains power is available, schedule a proper 20–30 minute or longer drive outside rather than brief starts or idling.
- After the first recurrence, arrange a battery-health, charging-system and parasitic-drain diagnosis instead of repeating jump-starts.
- Replace the battery only when testing shows it cannot retain charge or has an internal fault, and correct any vehicle fault before installing the replacement.
The durable solution is therefore a matched storage routine plus a diagnosis of any repeat failure: smart maintenance charging for long, mains-connected storage; proper drives and accessory removal when appropriate; and professional testing whenever the battery goes flat again after a full recharge.
