Estimate an electric car’s driving range by dividing the energy available to the driver by the vehicle’s energy use. With consumption in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, multiply usable battery capacity by 100 and divide by that consumption. With consumption in miles per kilowatt-hour, multiply usable capacity by the miles-per-kWh figure. For example, 60 kWh of usable energy at 30 kWh per 100 miles gives 200 miles (60 × 100 ÷ 30). That is a transparent estimate, not a guarantee or an EPA certification result.

The range formulas

Start by identifying the two inputs: usable battery energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and consumption in a clearly stated unit. Keep the units consistent throughout the calculation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Consumption unit Formula Illustrative calculation
kWh per 100 miles Estimated range (miles) = usable battery energy (kWh) × 100 ÷ consumption (kWh/100 miles) 60 kWh × 100 ÷ 30 kWh/100 miles = 200 miles
miles per kWh Estimated range (miles) = usable battery energy (kWh) × consumption (miles/kWh) 60 kWh × 3.2 miles/kWh = 192 miles

The two formulas are reciprocals. A consumption rate of 30 kWh/100 miles is equivalent to 100 ÷ 30, or about 3.33 miles/kWh. Do not divide kWh by miles/kWh, and do not treat a kWh/100-mile value as though it were miles/kWh.

The arithmetic describes energy use, not a particular driving test. The result is only as good as the battery figure, consumption figure, and conditions represented by those inputs.

Use usable battery energy, not automatically the advertised pack size

Usable, gross, and nominal capacity

Use the battery energy that the vehicle permits the driver to draw when that number is available and documented. A battery’s gross or nominal capacity can be higher than its usable capacity because the vehicle may reserve energy at the top or bottom of the pack. The official sources do not provide a universal gross-to-usable conversion, so applying one percentage to every model would create false precision.

If a specification lists only gross or nominal capacity, label your calculation as a rough upper estimate. Do not present all stored energy as if it were available for driving. A model-specific specification from the manufacturer or another identified vehicle source is needed to determine the usable figure for the exact vehicle and model year.

Match the exact vehicle version

Record the model year, battery option, drivetrain, wheel and tire configuration, and any other version detail attached to the capacity number. Two versions sold under the same model name can have different batteries or consumption ratings. If you cannot establish which version a number describes, keep the uncertainty visible instead of silently combining figures from different trims.

What to write down before calculating

  • Usable capacity in kWh, or a clear note that the available figure is gross or nominal.
  • The source and model-year context for that capacity.
  • The consumption unit and the conditions behind the consumption number.
  • Whether the estimate represents a full charge, a partial charge, or a planned reserve.

Choose a consumption rate that matches the trip

Understand the two common units

kWh/100 miles measures energy needed to travel a fixed distance; lower is better. Miles/kWh measures distance obtained from a fixed amount of energy; higher is better. Convert before comparing vehicles or scenarios. For example, convert a 3.0 miles/kWh assumption to 33.3 kWh/100 miles by calculating 100 ÷ 3.0.

Use scenario-specific data when possible

An EPA combined figure is useful for a standardized baseline, but it may not represent a high-speed highway trip, a cold-weather commute, or a heavily loaded car. For a practical estimate, use an observed or documented consumption rate for the conditions you are trying to model. Keep the battery assumption fixed while changing consumption so that the effect of the scenario is clear.

Write the conditions next to the number: for example, “32 kWh/100 miles, steady highway driving, cold weather” is more useful than an unexplained “32.” A consumption value without its unit or scenario cannot be compared safely with another value.

Worked calculations

Example 1: kWh per 100 miles

Assume 60 kWh of usable energy and consumption of 30 kWh/100 miles:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Multiply usable energy by 100: 60 × 100 = 6,000.
  2. Divide by consumption: 6,000 ÷ 30 = 200.
  3. Report an estimated range of 200 miles under the conditions represented by the 30 kWh/100-mile input.

This is arithmetic using assumed inputs. It is not a test result and does not promise that a particular car will travel 200 miles on every charge.

Example 2: miles per kWh

Assume 75 kWh of usable energy and consumption of 3.2 miles/kWh:

  1. Multiply the usable energy by the efficiency value: 75 × 3.2 = 240.
  2. Report 240 estimated miles for that scenario.

If you instead have 32 kWh/100 miles, convert it first: 100 ÷ 32 = 3.125 miles/kWh. Using either form with the same inputs produces the same range.

Example 3: a range interval instead of one number

Suppose the usable battery energy is 60 kWh, but plausible consumption for a route runs from 28 to 34 kWh/100 miles. Calculate both ends:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Scenario Consumption Calculation Estimated range
Lower energy use 28 kWh/100 miles 60 × 100 ÷ 28 About 214 miles
Higher energy use 34 kWh/100 miles 60 × 100 ÷ 34 About 176 miles

The useful planning statement is therefore about 176–214 miles for those assumptions, not a single 200-mile promise. The lower-consumption case produces the higher range because the denominator is smaller.

Example 4: energy needed for a planned distance

You can reverse the same relationship to check a trip. At 32 kWh/100 miles, a 180-mile drive requires an estimated 180 × 32 ÷ 100 = 57.6 kWh of usable driving energy. Compare that requirement with the energy you intend to have available, rather than treating the vehicle’s maximum range as a fixed trip allowance.

Why this estimate differs from the EPA label range

EPA range is a standardized, adjusted rating

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes laboratory range testing on a dynamometer, followed by adjustments intended to represent factors that laboratory cycles do not fully capture. The agency lists air conditioning, cold temperatures, high speed, and aggressive driving among those factors in its explanation of fuel-economy and EV range testing.

EPA says the most common adjustment approach uses a factor of 0.7. Its example changes a 200-mile highway laboratory result to 140 miles after adjustment (200 × 0.7). That is EPA’s example of its rating method, not a universal multiplier to apply to every vehicle, road, or journey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the combined figure is formed

In the method described by EPA, the adjusted city and highway results are weighted 55% city and 45% highway to produce the combined figure shown on the label. The weighting describes the label procedure; it does not mean every driver’s trip has that city/highway split.

The EPA electric-vehicle label text describes range as the approximate distance from a full charge in combined city/highway driving. Its electricity-consumption field is an estimated rate in kWh per 100 miles, and EPA explicitly cautions that a vehicle may not actually travel 100 miles on a fully charged battery at that estimated rate.

Use the label and your calculation for different purposes

  • Use the EPA label to compare vehicles tested under a common government procedure.
  • Use the capacity/consumption calculation to test a specific assumption, route, temperature, speed, or load.
  • Do not present your calculation as an EPA-certified result, and do not assume the label’s combined value is a highway, winter, or maximum-load guarantee.

Adjust the inputs for real driving conditions

Range changes whenever actual consumption differs from the rate in your calculation. EPA identifies driving and vehicle maintenance, air conditioning and other accessories, weather, road conditions, and vehicle load as causes of differences between estimated and actual efficiency. Its testing discussion also calls out cold conditions, HVAC use, high speed, and aggressive driving.

Conditions that commonly raise energy use

  • High speed: Sustained highway speeds can require a higher consumption input than a combined-driving figure.
  • Cold weather: Use a cold-weather observation or scenario rate when that is the journey you are planning.
  • Heating and air conditioning: Include the expected HVAC use in the consumption assumption rather than treating the cabin load as free.
  • Aggressive acceleration: Hard launches and repeated high-power driving can move consumption above a gentle-driving value.
  • Load and accessories: Passengers, cargo, and accessories change the vehicle’s energy demand.
  • Road conditions and maintenance: Surface, terrain, and vehicle condition can alter the rate you observe.

These factors do not justify adding an arbitrary “real-world penalty” to every calculation. Instead, change the consumption input to one supported by the conditions you expect, then show a range if the input remains uncertain.

A practical way to build a scenario range

  1. Choose the usable capacity for the exact vehicle version.
  2. Set a lower plausible consumption rate for the favorable case.
  3. Set a higher plausible rate for the demanding case.
  4. Calculate both endpoints with the same capacity.
  5. Plan around the demanding case when arriving with little margin would be unacceptable.

This method makes the uncertainty visible without pretending that a single adjustment factor applies to every driver.

Compare electric cars on capacity and efficiency separately

A larger battery does not automatically make a vehicle more efficient, and an efficient vehicle can achieve useful range with less stored energy. Compare the usable energy, the consumption rate in the same unit, and the resulting range under comparable conditions.

Comparison item Question to ask Why it matters
Usable battery energy How many kWh can the driver use, and is the figure usable or gross? It is the numerator in the range calculation.
Consumption Is the value in kWh/100 miles or miles/kWh, and under what conditions? It is the denominator, or the multiplier, and often changes more with conditions than capacity does.
Estimated range What result follows when the two inputs are combined? It shows the outcome without hiding which input produced it.
Trip scenario Does the comparison represent city, highway, cold, heat, load, or mixed driving? A fair comparison uses matching conditions.

As historical model-year context, the U.S. Department of Energy reported combined city/highway consumption rates spanning 1.49 to 4.17 miles per kWh for model-year 2024 electric vehicles in FOTW #1373. That 2024 spread is not a current-model ranking, but it illustrates why battery size and consumption efficiency should be considered separately.

A repeatable workflow for your own estimate

  1. Identify the vehicle: Note model year, battery option, drivetrain, and other version details.
  2. Find capacity: Prefer a documented usable-kWh figure. If only gross or nominal capacity is available, label the result a rough upper estimate.
  3. Select consumption: Use a value in kWh/100 miles or miles/kWh that matches the route and conditions.
  4. Check units: Convert one value if necessary; never mix the two forms in one formula.
  5. Calculate: Apply the appropriate formula and keep the intermediate numbers visible.
  6. Model uncertainty: Repeat the calculation with lower and higher plausible consumption if conditions are not fixed.
  7. Compare with official data: Treat the EPA label as a standardized combined-driving reference, not as a promise for your particular trip.
  8. Document assumptions: Write the capacity, consumption, conditions, date or model year, and whether a reserve or partial charge was included.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using gross capacity as usable capacity

Problem: The calculation assumes every kilowatt-hour in the advertised pack is available to drive. Fix: Find a documented usable figure; otherwise identify the answer as an upper estimate and do not imply a model-specific precision the source does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dividing by the wrong unit

Problem: kWh is divided by miles/kWh, or a kWh/100-mile value is multiplied as though it were miles/kWh. Fix: For kWh/100 miles, multiply kWh by 100 and divide. For miles/kWh, multiply kWh by miles/kWh.

Copying a combined label number into a highway forecast

Problem: The combined city/highway rating is treated as a dedicated high-speed or winter value. Fix: use a scenario-specific consumption input when available and calculate an interval if necessary.

Applying EPA’s 0.7 example to every car

Problem: The 200-to-140-mile example is treated as a universal correction. Fix: recognize it as an example of EPA’s rating adjustment approach, not a rule for personal trip planning.

Reporting a precise single number from uncertain inputs

Problem: A result such as 200 miles hides uncertainty in capacity, speed, temperature, and load. Fix: show the assumptions and calculate a low-to-high interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike figures

Problem: One car is compared using usable kWh and another using gross kWh, or one consumption figure is highway-only while the other is combined. Fix: normalize the capacity definition, units, vehicle version, and driving conditions before drawing a conclusion.

Where MPGe fits—and where it does not

EPA uses 33.7 kWh as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline to express electric-vehicle efficiency as miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). A plug-in electric vehicle using 33.7 kWh to drive 100 miles would have an MPGe of 100 under that energy-equivalence convention, as explained in EPA’s testing guidance.

MPGe is useful for comparing the energy content represented by different fuel types, but it is not a substitute for the battery-capacity calculation. It does not mean an EV must draw exactly 33.7 kWh from its battery to travel 100 miles in real use, and it does not tell you how many miles a particular battery will deliver without a capacity figure.

How to interpret the final number

Your result is best presented as: “With X kWh of usable energy and Y kWh/100 miles under these conditions, the estimated range is Z miles.” If the capacity is gross or the consumption is uncertain, say so in the same statement. For trip decisions, use the demanding end of a defensible interval when a shortfall would leave insufficient charging options; for vehicle comparisons, keep the assumptions identical so the difference reflects the cars rather than the math.
