The safest way to drive in snow is often not to drive at all. Check the forecast, alerts, traffic reports, and road conditions before leaving. If a storm is worsening or authorities warn that travel may become difficult or impossible, postpone a nonessential trip. If travel is necessary, prepare the vehicle completely, slow down, leave much more space, and make every control input smooth.

No drivetrain or driving technique can make severe winter conditions safe. If you must travel, prepare the vehicle completely, reduce speed, increase following distance, and make every steering, braking, and acceleration input gradual. Follow local closures, chain restrictions, posted warnings, and your vehicle owner’s manual.

Before you leave: decide whether the trip is necessary

Snow, sleet, freezing rain, blowing snow, and refreezing ice create different hazards. A Winter Storm Warning means significant winter weather is expected and travel may become difficult or impossible. An Ice Storm Warning signals dangerous icing, for which travel is strongly discouraged. A brief snow squall can be more dangerous than a steady snowfall because visibility and traction may deteriorate within minutes.

Prepare the vehicle before moving

Clear every part of the vehicle

Remove snow and ice from the entire vehicle before driving—not just a small opening in the windshield. Clear all windows, mirrors, headlights, tail lights, the roof, hood, trunk, windshield wipers, backup camera, parking sensors, and other driver-assistance sensors. Snow left on the roof can slide onto your windshield when you brake or blow into another driver’s path. Ice or packed snow over a camera or sensor can also interfere with visibility and assistance features.

A car snow brush and ice scraper makes this basic preparation easier. Choose one long enough to reach the roof and sturdy enough to remove ice without damaging the glass; clear delicate cameras and sensors according to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

Check tires and pressure

Inspect the tread and sidewalls for damage, and check the spare or inflator if your vehicle has one. Cold air reduces tire pressure, so measure the tires when cold and inflate them to the pressure listed on the driver’s-door-jamb label or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended setting.

Winter tires generally provide more grip than all-season tires in consistently cold, snowy, or icy conditions, but the right choice depends on your climate, roads, vehicle, and manufacturer’s requirements. If you regularly drive in severe winter weather, compare winter tires for your vehicle with a qualified tire professional. All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive do not replace appropriate tires or shorten the distance needed to stop.

How to drive in snow safely: 10 essential tips

1. Slow down before traction becomes a problem

Drive below the posted speed limit whenever snow, slush, ice, darkness, traffic, or visibility requires it. A posted limit assumes conditions may be better than they are now. Lower speed gives the tires more opportunity to maintain grip and gives you more time to recognize a hazard, but it cannot eliminate the risk of ice.

Increase the space between your vehicle and the one ahead by much more than you would on dry pavement. There is no universal safe number of seconds or vehicle lengths: the necessary gap varies with speed, surface, grade, visibility, traffic, and tire condition. Leave enough room to brake gradually rather than relying on an emergency stop.

2. Use smooth control inputs

Snow and ice provide a limited amount of tire grip. If you use most of that grip to accelerate, little remains for turning or braking. Accelerate gradually, brake progressively, and steer gently. Avoid sudden lane changes, sharp turns, abrupt throttle application, and unnecessary passing.

When possible, separate the actions: slow before a turn, steer through it smoothly, and accelerate only after the vehicle is pointed in the direction you want to travel. On a hill, maintain steady momentum without spinning the tires, while staying slow enough to stop if traffic or an obstruction appears.

3. Turn off cruise control

Do not use cruise control on snow, ice, slush, or any potentially slippery surface. If the tires lose traction, cruise control may continue applying power or maintain speed when you need to ease off immediately. Keep direct control of the accelerator and adjust speed yourself.

4. Brake correctly for your vehicle

Look well ahead and begin braking early. If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes (ABS), apply firm, steady pressure to the brake pedal when you need to stop and let the system pulse the brakes. Do not pump the pedal; pumping can reduce ABS effectiveness. You may feel vibration or hear noise during ABS operation, which is normal for the system.

ABS helps you retain steering control while braking, but it does not guarantee a short stop on snow or ice. Keep the vehicle pointed toward an open escape path and continue looking where you want to go.

5. Treat bridges, ramps, and shaded pavement as likely ice

Bridges and overpasses can freeze before surrounding roads because cold air circulates above and below the pavement. Ramps, elevated roadways, curves, shaded areas, and spots where water drains across the road can also become icy first.

Black ice may be nearly invisible, especially when melted snow or rain refreezes overnight. Freezing rain can coat the road with a slick layer that is generally more hazardous than ordinary snowfall. Reduce speed before these areas, avoid sudden inputs, and do not assume pavement that looks wet is merely wet.

6. Do not rely on all-wheel drive to stop

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive can help some vehicles accelerate or maintain forward motion in snow, but they do not create extra tire grip for braking. They do not prevent skids, guarantee steering control, or ensure that you will not become stuck. The same rules still apply: use suitable tires, reduce speed, leave more room, and brake early.

7. Manage hills carefully

Build only enough controlled momentum to climb a hill without spinning the tires, and avoid stopping halfway up when possible. On a descent, slow before the hill and use a lower gear or the vehicle’s approved downhill-control setting if appropriate. Do not coast in neutral, and do not accelerate sharply to correct a loss of momentum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On any hill, leave extra room because a vehicle ahead may slide, stop, or lose traction. If the road is too steep or icy to negotiate safely, turn around before committing to it.

8. Give snowplows plenty of room

Stay well behind an active snowplow. The plow may make wide turns, stop unexpectedly, obscure hazards, throw snow, or push snow across adjacent lanes. Avoid driving beside it, where visibility can be poor and the plow may move laterally.

Do not pass closely. Pass only when visibility is adequate, the maneuver is legal, and you can see the full roadway and any snow-covered hazards. A plowed lane may still be slippery, and a ridge of snow between lanes can pull at the vehicle.

9. Watch for sudden visibility loss

Blowing snow, a snow squall, spray from traffic, and snow thrown by a plow can make lane markings and vehicles disappear. If you can no longer see far enough to drive safely, do not continue at normal speed. Gradually reduce speed, activate your hazard lights if appropriate and legal, and pull completely off the travel lanes at the safest available location.

Do not stop in a live lane or on the shoulder where another driver may collide with you unless there is no safer option. Keep headlights on as required, but do not use high beams in heavy snow or blowing snow if they reflect glare back at you.

10. Prepare for a breakdown or becoming stuck

Winter travel can turn a minor delay into a serious exposure emergency. Carry supplies before leaving, and keep your phone charged. Equipment helps you respond to a problem; it is not a reason to drive into a storm or assume recovery is guaranteed.

What to do if the vehicle starts to skid

  1. Stay calm and look where you want to go. Avoid staring at the object or edge you are trying to avoid.
  2. Ease off the accelerator. Do not abruptly slam on the brakes or make a large steering correction.
  3. Steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to travel. Use small corrections and be ready for the vehicle to regain grip.
  4. If ABS is fitted and you need to stop, apply firm, steady brake pressure. Do not pump the pedal.
  5. Once traction returns, slow down further. A skid is evidence that your speed or control input exceeded the available grip.

The exact sensation differs between front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive vehicles, and electronic stability-control systems may intervene. Avoid abrupt overcorrection, which can turn one slide into a slide in the opposite direction. Review the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s stability-control and ABS guidance.

If you cannot see, get stuck, or become stranded

If visibility becomes unsafe

Pull over and stop until conditions improve if heavy snow or blowing snow prevents you from seeing safely. Choose a location as far from moving traffic as possible. Keep the vehicle visible with hazard lights or warning devices when appropriate, but do not take risks walking around near traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the vehicle is stuck

Stop spinning the wheels. Wheel spin can dig the tires deeper into snow and create heat that damages tires or drivetrain components. Straighten the wheels, clear snow from around the tires and under the vehicle when safe, and use only approved traction aids according to their instructions. If rocking the vehicle is permitted by the owner’s manual, use gentle, controlled movements rather than high engine speed.

A compact car snow shovel and car traction mats can be useful recovery tools. They cannot guarantee that a car will get unstuck, and you should not stand in traffic or under an unsafe vehicle to use them.

If you are stranded

  • Stay with the vehicle unless emergency responders direct you otherwise. A vehicle is easier to locate and offers shelter from wind and cold.
  • Make the vehicle visible with hazard lights, warning devices, or an exterior marker when it is safe to deploy them.
  • Clear snow away from the exhaust pipe before running the engine. A blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to enter the cabin.
  • Run the engine only intermittently for warmth, and keep a window slightly open while it is running to improve ventilation.
  • Conserve phone battery, contact emergency or roadside services, and give them your location, vehicle description, and medical needs.
  • Use blankets, warm clothing, food, water, and medication while waiting. Do not leave the vehicle to search for help in whiteout conditions.

What about tire chains?

Use chains only when they are compatible with your exact vehicle and tires, can be installed with the required clearance, and are permitted or required on your route. Check the owner’s manual and local road rules before buying or fitting them. Do not choose a generic chain size, and practice installation in a safe place before an emergency. Chains improve traction in suitable conditions; they do not make excessive speed or dangerous travel safe.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Driving with only a small windshield opening: clear the entire vehicle before moving.
  • Following too closely: snow and ice can make normal dry-road spacing inadequate.
  • Assuming AWD means all-weather safety: it helps with power delivery, not every part of stopping and steering.
  • Using cruise control: keep control of speed on slippery surfaces.
  • Pumping ABS brakes: apply firm, steady pressure instead.
  • Spinning the tires when stuck: clear snow and use controlled recovery techniques.
  • Passing a plow closely: wait for a legal, visible, and genuinely safe opportunity.
  • Running a stranded vehicle continuously: clear the exhaust and ventilate the cabin to reduce carbon-monoxide danger.

Road and weather conditions override every tip in this guide. If authorities advise against travel or the trip is not essential, waiting is the safest driving decision. If you must go, prepare the vehicle fully, drive slowly and smoothly, and be willing to stop when conditions become unsafe.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I avoid driving in snow?

The safest choice is to postpone nonessential travel when a winter storm is worsening, roads are closed, visibility is poor, or officials warn that travel may be difficult or impossible. If you must travel, check current road conditions, clear the entire vehicle, slow down, and be prepared to stop.

Is AWD or 4WD enough for driving in snow?

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive can help a vehicle accelerate in some snowy conditions, but they do not eliminate skids, improve every braking situation, or guarantee that you will not get stuck. Appropriate tires, lower speeds, longer following distances, and smooth inputs are still necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my car skids on snow or ice?

Ease off the accelerator, avoid abrupt corrections, and steer gently in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to travel. If you need to stop and the vehicle has ABS, apply firm, steady pressure to the brake pedal rather than pumping it.

What should I do if my car becomes stranded in a snowstorm?

Stay with the vehicle, make it visible, clear snow from the exhaust pipe, and run the engine only intermittently for warmth with ventilation. Contact emergency or roadside services, conserve your phone battery, and use blankets and other supplies while waiting.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Safe snow driving starts before the engine does. Postpone unnecessary travel in severe weather, clear every surface of the vehicle, use suitable tires, slow down, leave a large and variable gap, avoid cruise control, and make smooth inputs. AWD, chains, and emergency equipment are helpful only within their limits—they cannot overcome ice, poor visibility, or an unsafe decision to travel.
