The 2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX is the redesigned Tacoma’s most powerful 2024 powertrain, not merely a fuel-economy trim. Its turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 48-horsepower electric motor, and eight-speed automatic produce up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Every i-FORCE MAX has four-wheel drive, and Toyota quotes a 6,000-pound maximum tow rating and up to 24 mpg combined. The right version depends on the job: TRD Off-Road is the balanced trail choice, Limited is the road-oriented model, TRD Pro targets aggressive off-roading, and Trailhunter is built around overlanding. Exact tow, payload, fuel-economy, and fitment figures still depend on configuration.

What is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX?

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX is a power-focused hybrid powertrain for the all-new, fourth-generation Tacoma. It combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery.

Toyota rates the system at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque arriving at approximately 1,700 rpm. That makes it the most powerful Tacoma powertrain offered for the 2024 model year. It also brings standard four-wheel drive on every i-FORCE MAX grade, a maximum tow rating of 6,000 pounds, and up to an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined.

The important qualification is that the i-FORCE MAX is not automatically the best Tacoma for every job. It is a power-and-capability hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid, and its towing, payload, fuel economy, ride, and off-road behavior depend heavily on grade, bed length, tires, and equipment. Certain non-hybrid Tacomas can tow more, while the most specialized i-FORCE MAX models prioritize trail performance and overlanding equipment over maximum payload.

How the hybrid powertrain works

The electric motor supplies immediate low-speed torque and assists the turbocharged engine during acceleration. Toyota also says the system can help maintain speed on grades without unnecessary downshifts. During deceleration and braking, the motor can operate as a generator, recovering energy and sending it back to the traction battery.

This is a conventional self-contained hybrid system, not a plug-in hybrid. The cited Toyota materials describe gasoline-engine operation, regenerative braking, and the onboard battery, but do not describe an external charging port or a requirement to plug in the Tacoma. Drivers refuel it like a gasoline truck; the hybrid system manages battery charging automatically.

The gasoline engine may shut off when the truck stops and restart when needed. That behavior, along with regenerative braking, is normal operation rather than a fault. The small battery is intended to support the powertrain, not to provide a long electric-only driving range.

Which 2024 Tacoma trims get i-FORCE MAX?

Toyota’s 2024 lineup has eight named grades: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. The i-FORCE MAX availability is concentrated in the upper and more specialized grades:

Grade i-FORCE MAX availability General positioning
SR Not identified as available in the cited launch materials Entry-level Tacoma
SR5 Not identified as available in the cited launch materials Mainstream utility grade
TRD PreRunner Not identified as available in the cited launch materials Two-wheel-drive-oriented performance and appearance configuration
TRD Sport Optional On-road and sport-oriented configuration
TRD Off-Road Optional Mixed road and trail use
Limited Optional Premium, road-oriented configuration
TRD Pro Standard Factory performance-off-road model
Trailhunter Standard Factory overlanding model

Because used-vehicle listings and dealer descriptions can be incomplete, confirm the powertrain from the original window sticker, build sheet, or VIN-specific vehicle information before treating a truck as an i-FORCE MAX. A badge or online listing alone is not enough.

Four-wheel-drive systems and off-road equipment

All i-FORCE MAX Tacomas have four-wheel drive, but Toyota uses different hardware for different missions. The TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter use part-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, high and low ranges, Active Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist Control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter include an electronic locking rear differential. A front Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism is standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter and available on the TRD Off-Road. Disconnecting the front stabilizer can allow more suspension articulation on uneven terrain, while the rear locker can help maintain forward motion when one rear wheel has limited traction.

  • Vehicle Fitment: (FIT multiflex tailgate but NO CarbonPro Bed) Custom-made to fit 2007-2026 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 5.8ft (69.3") bed, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
  • Fiberglass Material: This material is chosen for its strength and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, ensures longevity and resistance against wear and tear, even hailstorms won't leave any dents.
  • EZ Install&Remove: Designed for easy installation without requiring complex tools or modifications to the truck, come with a clamp-on & no-drill installation process, allowing for hassle-free attachment and detachment.
  • Added Security: With durable and tough construction, reinforced hinges and strong latches, locking mechanisms ensure that the cover remains securely closed at all times, making it challenging for thieves to compromise the cover.
  • Enhanced Fuel Efficiency: Sleek and aerodynamic design resulting in improved gas mileage, remains stable even at highway speeds, without any flapping or bouncing compared to soft top covers.

The Limited i-FORCE MAX has a different brief. It uses full-time four-wheel drive with an electronically locking center differential and an Adaptive Variable Suspension aimed more at controlled road manners than maximum trail articulation. It also adds Sport S+, Comfort, and Custom drive modes. That hardware makes the Limited the road-focused i-FORCE MAX, not simply a luxury version of the part-time-drive TRD models.

Trail and terrain-control systems

Available electronic systems include:

  • Multi-Terrain Select: Adjusts traction-related behavior for different surfaces and operates in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low.
  • CRAWL Control: A low-speed system that modulates throttle and braking while the driver concentrates on steering.
  • Downhill Assist Control: Helps manage speed on descents.

These systems can make difficult terrain more manageable, but they do not eliminate the effects of tire grip, ground clearance, wheel placement, driver judgment, or vehicle loading.

Trailhunter versus TRD Pro

Both grades make the i-FORCE MAX standard, but they are designed around different kinds of off-road use. Trailhunter is the equipment-heavy overlanding choice; TRD Pro is the more Baja-oriented performance choice. That is a comparison of Toyota’s stated grade missions and equipment, not an independent test conclusion.

Other equipment Low-profile high-mount air intake, integrated LED light bar, RIGID Industries color-switching LED fog lamps, and available five- or six-foot bed configurations TRD performance air intake and IsoDynamic Performance Front Seats

The Trailhunter’s high-mount intake and integrated lighting are aimed at long-distance trail travel and expedition-style equipment use. It also adds an integrated high-output air compressor, useful for airing up large tires after driving off-road. The TRD Pro’s FOX suspension and IsoDynamic seats are more directly associated with controlling body movement during aggressive driving; Toyota describes the seats as using an air-over-oil shock absorber system to help stabilize the occupant’s head and neck.

TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX: the middle ground

For many buyers, the TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX is the most balanced version of the hybrid Tacoma. It combines the high-output powertrain with trail-oriented suspension and equipment without committing to the specialized hardware, styling, and use case of the TRD Pro or Trailhunter.

It is a logical choice for someone who drives on pavement most of the week but regularly uses forest roads, rocky access trails, snow-covered routes, or campsites where additional traction matters. Buyers should still inspect the specific truck’s tire, wheel, suspension, and option configuration because those details affect both capability and fuel economy.

Towing: 6,000 pounds is the i-FORCE MAX limit

Toyota gives the 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX a maximum towing rating of 6,000 pounds. That is a strong figure for the powertrain, but it is not the Tacoma lineup’s absolute maximum. Certain non-hybrid configurations, including specified SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner/XtraCab versions, can reach a 6,500-pound maximum rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In other words, choosing the hybrid for its 465 lb-ft of torque does not mean choosing the Tacoma with the highest published tow rating. If a buyer’s priority is maximum trailer capacity, the exact non-hybrid configuration may be the better match. If the priority is strong acceleration, low-rpm pulling force, and the i-FORCE MAX’s standard four-wheel drive, the hybrid may still be the more attractive choice.

Tow/Haul is standard on all i-FORCE MAX Tacomas. Available towing aids include a trailer brake controller, Trailer Back Up Guidance, Straight Path Assist, a digital rearview mirror, and camera systems intended to improve visibility around the truck and trailer.

Payload is not one universal number

Toyota’s launch material cites a maximum i-FORCE MAX payload of approximately 1,710 pounds, but the detailed specifications vary by grade, bed length, and other equipment. Larger tires, off-road hardware, passengers, cargo, and accessories all consume available payload.

For a real purchase or towing decision, use the payload label on the driver-door jamb of the specific truck. Do not subtract the advertised maximum tow rating from the advertised maximum payload, and do not assume that every TRD Pro, Trailhunter, or Limited has the same rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel economy and what the hybrid is really buying

The best published figure for the 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX is an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined. “Up to” matters: city, highway, and combined estimates vary by exact configuration, and Toyota’s brochure separates fuel-economy information by grade and equipment.

The i-FORCE MAX’s main value is stronger performance and useful efficiency for a midsize body-on-frame truck, not passenger-car fuel economy. Real-world results can fall below the estimate with 33-inch all-terrain tires, a lift or armor, a roof or bed load, trailer use, cold weather, steep terrain, heavy traffic, or sustained high speeds. No independent long-term fuel-economy testing is represented in this overview.

Bed, cabin, and power-use details

Toyota says the redesigned Tacoma increases bed volume by 7 percent compared with the outgoing model. An aluminum tailgate is available with power open-and-close functionality, and the truck provides power access in the cabin and bed.

Every i-FORCE MAX grade receives a standard 2,400-watt AC inverter for using compatible equipment in the cabin or bed. Trailhunter adds an integrated high-output air compressor, which is particularly relevant to owners who reduce tire pressure on the trail and need to air back up before returning to pavement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The i-FORCE MAX TRD models are primarily Double Cab trucks with five-foot beds. Trailhunter is offered with either a five-foot or six-foot bed. Because cab and bed configuration affect fitment, anyone shopping for 2024 Toyota Tacoma floor mats should verify the model year, cab style, trim, and whether the listing includes only the front row, the rear row, or a complete cabin set. The same fitment caution applies to bed mats, tonneau covers, racks, drawer systems, and camping accessories: a five-foot-bed product is not automatically correct for a six-foot Trailhunter.

Safety equipment and crash-test context

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the 2024 Tacoma range. The package includes features such as pre-collision detection with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert and prevention, and related active-safety and driver-assistance functions. The availability and operation of individual features can vary by feature and grade, so buyers should verify the equipment on the specific truck.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2024 Tacoma crew cab a Top Safety Pick. The published results include good ratings in the small-overlap front test, the original moderate-overlap front test, updated side testing, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, and pedestrian front crash prevention.

That award should not be presented as a perfect scorecard or as Top Safety Pick+. The Tacoma received a marginal overall rating in the updated moderate-overlap front test. The distinction matters because crash-test criteria change over time, and an award can coexist with a weaker result in one newer evaluation.

Hybrid ownership and service precautions

The i-FORCE MAX has both ordinary 12-volt electrical equipment and high-voltage DC and AC systems. Toyota’s hybrid maintenance information specifically warns owners not to touch the orange high-voltage wiring, connectors, or service plug and recommends authorized Toyota-dealer service for maintenance and repairs involving the hybrid system.

That means a roadside emergency kit is sensible, but high-voltage-system repair is not a do-it-yourself project. Reasonable preparedness items include a tire inflator, tire-repair supplies appropriate for the tires, basic emergency equipment, and jump-start equipment used exactly as directed by the Tacoma’s documentation. Do not probe, disconnect, or attempt to repair the traction battery, inverter, orange cabling, or service plug with ordinary tools.

Routine truck ownership still includes tires, brakes, fluids, suspension components, and the 12-volt battery. Regenerative braking can change how the vehicle uses its friction brakes, but it does not make inspection or scheduled maintenance unnecessary. Use the vehicle-specific owner documentation and hybrid maintenance guide for service intervals and procedures.

Check recalls by VIN before buying

Recall status must be checked by vehicle identification number, not by model name alone. For a used, leftover, or dealer-demo 2024 Tacoma, obtain the truck’s 17-character VIN and use the current National Highway Traffic Safety Administration VIN lookup before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A model-wide statement such as “the 2024 Tacoma has no recalls” is not reliable. Unrepaired campaigns, completed remedies, and newly posted recall information can change over time, and the VIN lookup is the relevant source for an individual truck.

Which 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX should you buy?

  • Choose the TRD Pro if high-performance off-roading is the priority. Its FOX QS3 suspension, remote reservoirs, performance intake, 33-inch tires, front stabilizer disconnect, rear locker, and IsoDynamic seats support the most aggressive factory-oriented trail mission.
  • Choose the Trailhunter if you plan to overland, carry trail equipment, travel for extended periods, or want factory-integrated expedition hardware. Its Old Man Emu shocks, high-mount intake, compressor, lighting, 33-inch tires, and available six-foot bed make it the more natural cargo-and-camping choice.
  • Choose the TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX for mixed road and trail use. It delivers the hybrid powertrain and meaningful off-road hardware without the full specialization of the two halo grades.
  • Choose the Limited i-FORCE MAX for premium daily driving, highway use, and a more road-oriented suspension strategy. Its full-time four-wheel drive, locking center differential, Adaptive Variable Suspension, and additional comfort-oriented drive modes distinguish it from the part-time-drive TRD grades.
  • Choose a non-hybrid Tacoma if the absolute maximum published towing rating is more important than i-FORCE MAX output. Certain non-hybrid configurations reach 6,500 pounds, compared with 6,000 pounds for the i-FORCE MAX.

Does every i-FORCE MAX Tacoma have four-wheel drive?

Yes. Four-wheel drive is standard on all i-FORCE MAX grades, although the Limited uses full-time four-wheel drive while the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter use part-time four-wheel-drive systems with a two-speed transfer case.

Can the i-FORCE MAX tow 6,500 pounds?

No. Toyota’s maximum i-FORCE MAX towing rating is 6,000 pounds. The 6,500-pound figure applies to certain specified non-hybrid Tacoma configurations, not to the hybrid powertrain.

Which i-FORCE MAX is best for overlanding?

The Trailhunter is the most natural fit because it is factory-developed around overlanding equipment, including Old Man Emu shocks, a high-mount air intake, an integrated compressor, an LED light bar, and available five- or six-foot beds. The TRD Pro is more focused on aggressive performance off-road.

How do I verify a used 2024 Tacoma’s recall status?

Get the truck’s 17-character VIN and check it through the current NHTSA VIN recall lookup. Recall status should be verified for the specific truck shortly before purchase.

How much can the 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX tow?

No. The maximum i-FORCE MAX tow rating is 6,000 pounds. Certain non-hybrid Tacoma configurations can reach 6,500 pounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The maximum published i-FORCE MAX payload is approximately 1,710 pounds, but the actual rating varies by grade, bed, tires, and equipment. Check the driver-door-jamb payload label on the specific truck.

How should I check recalls on a used 2024 Tacoma?

Use the truck’s 17-character VIN in the current NHTSA recall lookup. Model-level claims are not a substitute for a VIN-specific check.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX is the Tacoma’s strongest 2024 powertrain, pairing 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft with standard four-wheel drive, useful trail hardware, a 6,000-pound tow rating, and up to 24 mpg combined. It is best understood as a capability hybrid, not a fuel-sipping or plug-in truck. Choose the TRD Off-Road for balance, Limited for road-oriented comfort, TRD Pro for aggressive off-roading, or Trailhunter for factory overlanding equipment—and verify the exact payload, bed, tire, tow, and VIN-specific recall information before buying.
