To check a specific U.S. vehicle for open safety recalls, find its 17-character VIN and enter it at NHTSA.gov/Recalls. You can also search by license plate. If the lookup lists an unrepaired recall, follow the automaker’s safety instructions and contact its dealership to arrange the recall repair; NHTSA says vehicle recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership.

A recall lookup is a record check, not a mechanical inspection or a guarantee that a vehicle is safe. A result with no unrepaired recalls means none is currently associated with the VIN in NHTSA’s system; it does not erase past recalls or rule out a newly announced recall that has not yet been matched to every affected VIN. Here’s how to check, interpret the result, and decide what to do next.

Check a specific vehicle by VIN or license plate

NHTSA’s recall lookup is designed to identify unrepaired recalls associated with a particular vehicle. A VIN search is the most direct way to check that vehicle. A license-plate search is another option if you do not have the VIN handy. Both are available through NHTSA.gov/Recalls, but make sure you use the specific-vehicle lookup rather than relying on a general search for a vehicle’s year, make, and model.

  1. Find the VIN. It has 17 characters. Look at the lower left of the windshield, on the label inside the driver-side doorjamb, or on the vehicle’s registration or insurance documents.
  2. Open NHTSA.gov/Recalls. Enter the VIN and submit the search. Review any unrepaired recalls associated with the vehicle.
  3. If searching by plate, select the state and enter the plate number. Check that the result corresponds to the vehicle you currently own. If the lookup points to a vehicle you previously owned, the state DMV record may need updating; use the VIN to check the current vehicle in the meantime.
  4. Read the result in context. A VIN-specific result is different from a year, make, and model search, which shows general recall information and does not determine whether a particular vehicle has an unrepaired recall.
Search method What it checks What you need Practical consideration
VIN Unrepaired recalls associated with the specific vehicle entered The 17-character VIN Find it on the windshield, driver-side doorjamb label, registration, or insurance documents.
License plate Unrepaired recalls associated with the vehicle record linked to the plate Plate number and state Useful when the VIN is not at hand; a stale state record can lead to a result for a previously owned vehicle.
Year, make, and model General recall information for vehicles matching those details Vehicle year, make, and model It is not a VIN-specific determination for your vehicle.

Which lookup should you use?

If you have the VIN, use it: it identifies the particular vehicle rather than a broad group of similar vehicles. It is also a good fallback when a license-plate search appears to be tied to an old or incorrect state record. You can copy the number from one of the vehicle’s labels or documents instead of trying to identify the vehicle by model details alone.

A plate lookup is convenient if you are away from the vehicle or do not have registration or insurance documents nearby. It requires the plate number and the state associated with that plate. Because the search depends on the linked state record, it may not identify the vehicle you currently own if the record is outdated. Check that the result matches the correct vehicle; if it does not, use the VIN and consider whether the DMV record needs updating.

A year/make/model search can help you see general recall information for vehicles of that type, but it cannot answer the personal question, “Does this specific vehicle have an unrepaired recall?” A recall can affect only certain vehicles within a model year or production range. Use a VIN or plate search for the vehicle-specific check.

Make sure you are checking the right VIN

A VIN is 17 characters long. Check the characters carefully before submitting it, especially if you copied it from a document or typed it from the windshield or doorjamb. If the result looks unexpected, verify the VIN against another location or document and run the search again. If you use a plate and the lookup shows a different vehicle, do not treat that result as the current vehicle’s status; check by VIN instead.

What an open-recall result means

If the lookup lists an unrepaired recall for your VIN, treat it as an actionable safety issue. Read the recall information, including any instructions about whether to drive or where to park the vehicle, then contact the manufacturer’s local dealership to schedule the remedy. NHTSA’s March 3, 2026 consumer alert says: “Follow any instructions from the automaker, including any ‘do not drive’ or ‘park outside’ warnings.” Follow the automaker’s instructions rather than assuming it is safe to keep using the vehicle while waiting for an appointment.

Pay particular attention to any interim warning from the automaker. A notice may direct you not to drive the vehicle or to park it outside. Those instructions are important while you arrange a repair; do not substitute a general assumption about the vehicle for the manufacturer’s direction. If you are unsure how an instruction applies to your situation, contact the manufacturer or dealership and ask what to do while waiting for the remedy.

NHTSA says vehicle recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership. Contact the dealership that will perform the work to confirm the next step and appointment arrangements. Ask the dealership to explain the recall remedy and any instructions relevant to the time before the appointment. If the vehicle is unusually old, ask the manufacturer about the specific remedy and whether it remains eligible; do not assume the same eligibility applies to every vehicle regardless of age.

A practical next-step checklist

  1. Read the recall details and safety instructions. Follow any direction to stop driving or park in a particular place.
  2. Contact a manufacturer’s dealership. Tell them the vehicle has an open recall and ask to schedule the remedy described in the recall information.
  3. Clarify the plan. Confirm the appointment arrangements and ask the dealership or manufacturer what to do before the repair, particularly if the notice contains an interim warning.
  4. Keep the result and repair information together. Retain the recall details and any repair documentation so you can refer to them if you need to confirm the work or resolve a record that still appears open.

The lookup is free, and the recall remedy is handled through the manufacturer’s dealership. You do not need to buy an OBD-II reader, vehicle-history report, VIN label, or printed manual to find current VIN-specific recall information. Those items are not the source of NHTSA’s open-recall status. The relevant next step is to use the government lookup and, if a recall appears, contact the automaker’s dealership.

If the repair is delayed or a dealer refuses

Ask the dealership what remedy is available and when it can be performed. If a dealer refuses to carry out the remedy described in the recall notice, notify the manufacturer. NHTSA’s Takata recall guidance also says an owner can file a complaint with NHTSA. Keep the recall information and any communications with the dealership or manufacturer available while resolving the issue.

If scheduling or eligibility is unclear, contact the manufacturer directly and explain what the lookup shows. For an unusually old vehicle, ask the manufacturer about the specific remedy and whether it remains eligible rather than assuming that general guidance answers the question for that vehicle. NHTSA’s consumer guidance says recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership, but that should not be expanded into a claim that every vehicle of any age will always have the same remedy available.

If you suspect a safety defect but no recall appears

A recall lookup only reports recall records; it does not assess the vehicle’s mechanical condition. If you believe a safety defect is present but it is not covered by a current recall, NHTSA’s March 3, 2026 consumer alert directs consumers to report the issue online or call its Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236. The alert listed hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern; check NHTSA’s current contact information before calling because hours and details may change.

What “0 unrepaired recalls” does—and does not—tell you

A result reading “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” means that the lookup currently has no unrepaired recall associated with the VIN you entered. It does not mean the vehicle has never been recalled, prove that the vehicle is mechanically safe, or guarantee that no applicable recall will appear later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, the lookup does not display a recall that has already been repaired. A zero result is not a complete repair history and does not tell you whether a previous owner had recall work done. It is a current status check for unrepaired recalls associated with the entered VIN, not a certificate that the vehicle has never had a recall or that it has no mechanical problems.

NHTSA’s lookup has specific limits. It will not show recalls that have already been repaired, and a newly announced recall may not appear for every affected vehicle until the automaker identifies the relevant VINs. NHTSA adds VINs continuously, so an empty result can change as identification work proceeds.

  • Older recalls: The search excludes some recalls more than 15 years old, except where a manufacturer offers more coverage.
  • Some manufacturers: Some small vehicle manufacturers are not included.
  • Non-safety campaigns: Manufacturer customer-service and other non-safety campaigns are not shown as safety recalls.
  • International vehicles: Recalls involving international vehicles may not be represented. The lookup is a U.S. resource and may not cover an imported vehicle’s recall status in another country.

These exclusions matter when interpreting a result. A non-safety customer-service campaign is different from an open safety recall, and its absence from the recall lookup does not establish whether a manufacturer has another kind of campaign. Similarly, the age limit is not an assurance that every recall older than 15 years is absent: NHTSA’s stated exception is when a manufacturer offers more coverage. For an older vehicle, ask the manufacturer about the specific remedy and coverage.

For those reasons, use a clean result narrowly: no unrepaired recall is currently associated with that VIN in NHTSA’s lookup. If an announcement seems relevant but your VIN search is empty, contact the manufacturer and check again later. For an imported or international vehicle, ask the manufacturer about the applicable market’s recall process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a new recall may not show for every vehicle right away

When a recall is announced, the list of affected VINs may still be developing. NHTSA notes that a recently announced recall may not show for every vehicle until the automaker identifies the VINs involved. The absence of a result immediately after hearing about a recall is therefore not definitive evidence that your vehicle is unaffected. Confirm that you entered the VIN correctly, contact the manufacturer if the announcement appears relevant, and repeat the search later.

Also remember the U.S. scope: NHTSA’s lookup is a U.S. government resource and may not represent recalls for an international vehicle or another market. If a vehicle was imported, check with the manufacturer about the process and recall coverage for the market where it was sold or is being used. Do not assume that a U.S. lookup has established the status in another country.

If the lookup and your repair history disagree

If you believe a listed recall was already repaired, contact the repair shop or manufacturer and ask them to confirm that the repair and its reporting were recorded for the correct vehicle. There can be a delay between the repair, the manufacturer’s report, and NHTSA’s updated record, so the lookup may not change immediately.

If the vehicle was repaired but the record still shows the recall as open, keep the repair documentation and ask the manufacturer what is needed to correct or confirm the status. If you expected a recall to appear but no result is shown, confirm that you entered the VIN accurately, then contact the manufacturer; an affected VIN may not yet have been identified in the lookup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a mismatch means the repair was not completed, or that the lookup is wrong. The record may not yet reflect a completed repair because information passes from the repair to the manufacturer and then to NHTSA. Ask the repair shop or manufacturer to verify the work and reporting for the correct VIN, and allow for the status update to catch up. If you are trying to verify that a recall repair was completed, the repair documentation and confirmation from the shop or manufacturer are more useful than repeatedly interpreting the same unchanged result.

The reverse mismatch can happen too: a relevant announcement may exist while the VIN lookup still returns no open recall. That can occur because the affected VINs are still being identified. Check the VIN, contact the manufacturer if the announcement seems relevant, and recheck periodically. Keep the distinction clear: the lookup answers what is currently associated with the entered VIN in the system, not every question about a vehicle’s past service or possible future recall coverage.

Make recall checks part of routine vehicle ownership

NHTSA recommends checking for recalls at least twice a year. That matters because an empty lookup is a snapshot of the records associated with a VIN at the time you search, and newly identified vehicles can be added later. NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025 in its March 3, 2026 consumer alert. That figure describes the 2025 reporting year, not 2026.

You can make the check a recurring manual task or use NHTSA’s free SaferCar app to receive alerts. Manual searches let you decide when to check without saving vehicle information in an app. SaferCar can retain vehicle and equipment entries on your device and send recall notifications, reducing reliance on remembering to return to the lookup page. Both approaches are ways to keep watch; an alert still needs follow-up with the current recall details and, if a vehicle recall is listed, the manufacturer’s dealership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach How it works Useful when
Manual lookup Search the VIN or plate at NHTSA.gov/Recalls at least twice a year. You want to check on a schedule without adding vehicle information to an app.
SaferCar app NHTSA’s free app lets you save vehicles and related equipment, receive recall notifications, and get pointed toward local dealerships. You want notifications rather than relying only on calendar reminders and manual searches.

NHTSA says the vehicle, VIN, and equipment information entered in SaferCar is stored on the user’s device rather than at NHTSA. Whichever method you use, follow up on any alert by checking the current recall information and contacting the manufacturer’s dealership about the remedy.

A simple routine for staying current

  • Check now: Search each vehicle’s VIN when you first want to know its current open-recall status.
  • Repeat at least twice a year: A periodic check can catch vehicles added after an earlier search.
  • Respond to alerts: Read the current safety instructions and contact the manufacturer’s dealership if an unrepaired vehicle recall appears.
  • Recheck when something changes: If a recall announcement seems relevant but no VIN result appears, contact the manufacturer and check again later.

The workflow does not require a paid product. NHTSA provides the lookup and SaferCar app, and the manufacturer’s dealership provides the vehicle recall remedy. Tools such as an OBD-II reader do not provide the official open-recall status, and a vehicle-history report is not needed for this current VIN-specific check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my VIN for recalls?

Find the 17-character VIN on the lower left of the windshield, the driver-side doorjamb label, registration, or insurance documents. Enter it at NHTSA.gov/Recalls and review any unrepaired recalls listed for that vehicle.

Can I check open recalls by license plate instead of VIN?

Yes. NHTSA’s lookup accepts a plate number and state. A plate search is convenient when you do not have the VIN, but if it returns a vehicle you previously owned, the state DMV record may need updating; use the VIN to check the current vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” mean?

It means NHTSA’s lookup currently has no unrepaired recall associated with the VIN you entered. It does not prove the vehicle was never recalled or is mechanically safe, and recently announced recalls may not yet be matched to every affected VIN.

What should I do if my car has an open recall?

Read and follow the automaker’s interim safety instructions, including any direction not to drive or to park outside. Contact the manufacturer’s dealership promptly to arrange the recall remedy. NHTSA says vehicle recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership.

Why does a recall still show after the repair?

There can be a delay between the repair, the manufacturer reporting it, and NHTSA updating the record. Ask the repair shop or manufacturer to confirm the repair and its reporting for the correct vehicle, and keep your repair documentation.

How often should I check for recalls?

NHTSA recommends checking at least twice a year. You can search manually at NHTSA.gov/Recalls or use the free SaferCar app for vehicle and equipment recall notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does NHTSA’s VIN lookup cover imported vehicles?

Not necessarily. NHTSA’s lookup is a U.S. resource, and international vehicles may not be represented. Contact the manufacturer about the recall process for the relevant market.

Is a VIN recall check the same as a safety inspection?

No. The lookup checks recall records associated with the VIN; it does not inspect the vehicle or determine whether it is mechanically safe.

The Bottom Line

Check your specific vehicle at NHTSA.gov/Recalls using its 17-character VIN, or use the license-plate search if the VIN is not handy. Treat any unrepaired recall as an action item: follow the automaker’s safety instructions and contact its dealership for the remedy. A zero result is only the current status shown for that VIN, so check at least twice a year and contact the manufacturer if an announcement seems relevant or a repair record looks wrong.
