Check your Forester with its complete 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). Enter that VIN on Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls page, then verify it with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lookup at NHTSA.gov/Recalls. Subaru’s search is VIN-specific. NHTSA’s result identifies unrepaired recalls recorded for that vehicle. If either official tool shows an open recall, contact a Subaru retailer; NHTSA says the safety remedy is free through a local dealership.
Why the VIN, not the Forester name, determines recall coverage
A recall announcement may mention a Subaru Forester model or a model year, but that description does not prove that every vehicle in that group is affected. Subaru states that “all recalls are specific to the vehicle identification number.” Production dates, equipment, assembly changes and other manufacturing details can put two apparently identical Foresters in different recall populations.

Use the exact VIN whenever you need an answer about one vehicle. A model-year search, a social-media post or a notice for a similar Forester can tell you that a campaign exists, but only a VIN lookup can show whether the vehicle is listed for an unrepaired remedy in the manufacturer’s system.
No VIN is available here, so an individual Forester cannot be classified as affected or unaffected without the owner performing a live check.

Find your Forester’s complete 17-character VIN
Do not omit characters or substitute the license plate when using Subaru’s tool. The VIN is a 17-character sequence of letters and numbers. NHTSA identifies these common locations:
- Windshield: look through the lower-left corner from outside the vehicle, on the driver’s side.
- Driver-side doorjamb: open the driver’s door and check the certification label on the door pillar or jamb.
- Registration: the vehicle registration document normally lists the VIN.
- Insurance documents: a policy card or declarations page may show the VIN.
NHTSA lists VIN-location guidance in its vehicle safety resources. Compare the characters on the windshield with a document if possible. A mistyped character can produce a false “no results” outcome or an invalid-entry message.
Use the VIN for the vehicle you are actually driving. If your household has more than one Subaru, do not rely on a saved browser entry or a document from another car. Before submitting, count 17 characters and compare at least two locations. This simple check prevents a clean result for the wrong vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the VIN on Subaru’s official recall page
- Open Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls page.
- Enter all 17 VIN characters in the recall search field. Subaru’s customer-support guidance says the full VIN is required.
- Submit the search and read the result for that specific vehicle. Record the campaign or recall number and any remedy or retailer instructions shown.
- If the page reports an unrepaired recall, call a Subaru retailer and ask for an appointment using the VIN and recall number.
Subaru’s lookup is the manufacturer route, so it is the appropriate place to start when you want Subaru-specific campaign information and the next step for arranging service. The page does not establish that a model-year recall applies merely because the model name appears in a notice.
Take a screenshot or print the result with the date. Online status can change after a repair is entered, and a dated record helps if a retailer cannot immediately see the same campaign. If Subaru displays more than one open item, note each number and ask whether the visits can be completed together.
Verify the result with NHTSA
- Go to NHTSA.gov/Recalls.
- Choose the VIN search and enter the same 17-character VIN.
- Review the listed unrepaired safety recalls, including any campaign identifiers and descriptions.
- If you do not have the VIN, use NHTSA’s license-plate search as an alternative starting point, then confirm the vehicle identity before booking service.
NHTSA’s lookup is a regulator-run check that can be useful as an independent confirmation. Its result is specifically about unrepaired recalls recorded for the vehicle; a recall that a dealer already completed may not appear as an open item.
A plate search is useful when registration is available but the vehicle is not nearby. Treat it as a way to locate the correct record, not as a replacement for verifying the VIN on the Forester. If the plate search identifies a different make, model or year, stop and correct the vehicle information before taking action.

Subaru and NHTSA lookup paths compared
| Feature | Subaru Vehicle Recalls page | NHTSA recall lookup |
|---|---|---|
| Search input | Full 17-character VIN required | VIN search; license-plate search is also supported |
| Primary purpose | Manufacturer’s VIN-specific Subaru recall information and retailer follow-up | Government lookup for unrepaired safety recalls and broader recall resources |
| What a clean result means | No matching recall displayed within Subaru’s stated coverage | No unrepaired recall displayed within NHTSA’s stated coverage |
| Important age limit stated by the site | Recalls issued before February 1998 are not included | Many recalls more than 15 years old may be omitted from the VIN search |
| Newly announced recalls | VIN-specific information depends on Subaru identifying affected VINs | NHTSA says a newly announced recall may be absent while affected VINs are still being identified |
| Repair arrangement | Contact a Subaru retailer | Contact a local dealership; NHTSA says the recall repair is free |
Running both searches is sensible when the stakes are safety-related, but neither result should be described as a complete historical record under every circumstance. Keep the VIN and the date of each check with your vehicle records.
What an open recall does—and does not—cost
You do not need to buy a scanner, replacement part, diagnostic subscription or repair manual to check recall status. The lookup is an online information step. For an open safety recall, NHTSA says a local dealership should perform the remedy for free. That is separate from optional maintenance or repairs a retailer may recommend during the visit.

Ask the service adviser to identify which work is covered by the recall and which work, if any, would be customer-paid. A retailer might discuss tires, fluids or unrelated wear items, but those recommendations are not part of the no-cost recall remedy. If parts are unavailable, ask when they expect them and whether the notice gives interim driving or parking instructions.
What to do when an open recall appears
Schedule the remedy through a Subaru retailer
Call a local Subaru retailer, provide the VIN and recall number, and ask what appointment time and parts availability apply. The retailer can confirm whether the campaign is open in its service system and explain how long the visit is expected to take. Bring the recall notice or a screenshot of the lookup result if you have one.
Do not buy parts or attempt a safety recall repair yourself
A recall remedy is a manufacturer safety action, not a do-it-yourself maintenance job. Do not purchase replacement parts, bypass a component or follow an internet repair procedure as a substitute for the official remedy. NHTSA says a local dealership should perform an open recall repair for free. Ask the retailer to document completion on your service records.
Ask about operating restrictions if the notice warns of a hazard
Some recall notices contain specific warnings about driving, parking or using a vehicle before repair. Follow the instructions in the notice and the retailer’s safety guidance. If the lookup gives no operating instruction, ask the service department what precautions apply while you wait rather than guessing.
Keep proof of completion
Save the repair order, recall number and date completed. A completed remedy may stop appearing as an open item in a lookup, while your paperwork remains useful when selling the Forester, transferring records or resolving a data mismatch.
If the retailer says the campaign is closed
Ask whether the closure reflects a completed repair, a duplicate campaign or a data-entry correction. Have the adviser compare the VIN character by character and provide written confirmation. If the online page still shows an open item after the repair, retain the repair order and ask the retailer when the databases should update.

A clean screen means the tool did not display an applicable unrepaired recall within its current database and coverage rules. It does not certify that the Forester has never been recalled or that no campaign could be added later.
- New campaigns can take time: NHTSA says a newly announced recall may not appear while the affected VINs are still being identified.
- Older campaigns may be excluded: NHTSA says its VIN search may omit most recalls more than 15 years old. Subaru says its page does not include recalls issued before February 1998.
- Completed repairs are not open recalls: NHTSA’s search is for unrepaired recalls, so a previously repaired campaign may not be listed.
- Other notices are outside the result: NHTSA says the search may omit manufacturer customer-service campaigns, other non-safety campaigns and recalls for international vehicles.
NHTSA’s recall FAQ states, “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” That statement concerns the recall itself, not whether every historical campaign will remain visible in a particular VIN tool. If you need older service history, ask a Subaru retailer to review the VIN and request prior repair documentation from the seller or previous owner.
For a recently announced campaign, check again after Subaru and NHTSA have had time to identify affected VINs. A clean result on the day of announcement is not a reason to ignore a mailed notice or a retailer’s warning. Keep following the official instructions until the campaign is either completed or formally determined not to apply.

Common lookup problems and fixes
The site says the VIN is invalid
- Recheck that you entered all 17 characters.
- Compare the typed VIN with the windshield plate and the doorjamb label.
- Check registration and insurance documents for a transcription error.
- Make sure you are using the VIN for the Forester you intend to check, not another vehicle in the household.
Copying a VIN from a document can introduce a single-character mistake. Re-enter it manually if pasting produces an unexpected result.
Subaru shows no result but NHTSA shows a recall
Capture the NHTSA campaign details and call a Subaru retailer with the VIN. The retailer can determine whether the campaign is open for that vehicle and whether Subaru’s site has not yet synchronized the information. Do not assume that the disagreement means the recall is harmless or already repaired.
NHTSA shows no result but Subaru shows an open recall
Use Subaru’s result as the manufacturer-specific lead and arrange service with a Subaru retailer. NHTSA’s database can have coverage or timing differences, particularly around newly identified VINs and older campaigns.
The vehicle was imported or registered outside the United States
NHTSA says its lookup may not cover international-vehicle recalls. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized retailer in the vehicle’s market for the correct procedure. Do not treat a U.S. “no results” screen as proof that an imported vehicle has no outstanding safety campaign.
The Forester is more than 15 years old
Run both official checks, then ask a Subaru retailer to review the VIN if you need older campaign history. NHTSA warns that many recalls older than 15 years may not appear in its VIN search, and Subaru excludes recalls issued before February 1998 from its recall page.
You only have a model-year notice
Use the notice to identify the possible campaign, but do not use it to decide that your Forester is included. Obtain the VIN and run the official searches. The same model year can contain vehicles built before and after a production change, so the notice alone cannot settle applicability.
Set up future recall alerts
MySubaru account
Subaru says owners can create a free MySubaru account for recall and campaign notifications. Follow Subaru’s account guidance at its customer-support page, add the correct vehicle and keep your contact information current. An alert is a prompt to check the details; it is not a substitute for confirming the VIN and remedy status.
NHTSA SaferCar app
NHTSA’s free SaferCar app can alert you about recalls for a vehicle and VIN you add. NHTSA describes the app and other safety resources at NHTSA.gov’s vehicle safety resources. Verify that the VIN saved in the app matches the windshield and doorjamb labels.
Alerts reduce the chance of missing a later campaign, especially after buying a used Forester or changing address. They do not replace an occasional direct lookup when you are preparing to buy, sell or travel in the vehicle.

Questions to ask the service department
- Which recall number is open for this VIN?
- What remedy will be performed?
- Are the required parts available, and how long should the appointment take?
- Are there any driving or parking precautions before the appointment?
- Will the retailer provide written confirmation that the recall was completed?
- Will more than one open recall be handled during the same visit?
These questions separate an official recall remedy from unrelated maintenance recommendations. A retailer may identify other service needs, but those are not part of the free safety recall remedy described by NHTSA.
How recall checks fit into buying or selling a Forester
Before buying
Ask the seller for the VIN, run it through both official lookups and inspect the service history. An open recall should be resolved by a Subaru retailer before you take responsibility for the vehicle, or its status should be reflected clearly in the transaction. A seller’s statement that “the model was never recalled” is not a substitute for a VIN result.
If the seller cannot provide the VIN, you cannot perform a reliable vehicle-specific check. Wait for the VIN rather than relying on a stock number, license-plate photograph or model-year description. After purchase, create your own MySubaru and SaferCar alerts so future notices reach you.
Before selling
Check the VIN shortly before listing the Forester. If an open campaign appears, disclose it accurately and arrange the free remedy when practical. Keep the completed repair order so the buyer can distinguish a repaired recall from an unresolved one.

Recalls address identified safety defects, and delay leaves the vehicle in the condition that prompted the campaign. NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025; that national figure is not a Forester-specific risk estimate, but it illustrates why a current VIN check is more useful than assuming an older vehicle is unaffected.
Make a check part of routine ownership after buying a used vehicle, receiving a manufacturer letter, moving to a new address or seeing a credible safety notice. Use the official VIN tools, follow any hazard warning, and arrange the no-cost remedy rather than trying to diagnose or repair a recall yourself.
Official sources and coverage notes
Use Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls page for the manufacturer VIN lookup and Subaru’s explanation that recalls are VIN-specific, available through its recall customer-support guidance. Use NHTSA.gov/Recalls for the federal VIN or license-plate search and its stated limitations. NHTSA’s broader recall FAQs explain that a recall never expires, while the vehicle safety resources page covers VIN locations, free repair information and SaferCar alerts.
Check the live databases each time you need a current answer. A result is tied to the VIN and the information available when you search, not just to the Forester badge or model year.

Where can I find my Forester’s VIN?
Look at the lower-left corner of the windshield, the driver-side doorjamb certification label, the vehicle registration or an insurance document. Confirm the characters match before searching.
Can I check a Forester by model year instead of VIN?
No. Subaru says recalls are specific to the VIN. A model-year notice only indicates that some vehicles may be included; it does not determine whether yours needs the remedy.
What should I do if my VIN shows an open recall?
Call a local Subaru retailer, provide the VIN and recall number, and schedule the remedy. NHTSA says an open recall repair should be completed at a dealership for free.

No. The tools show what is currently recorded as unrepaired within their coverage. NHTSA may omit newly announced recalls while VINs are being identified, many recalls more than 15 years old, non-safety campaigns and international-vehicle recalls. Subaru excludes recalls issued before February 1998.
Do recalls expire?
NHTSA says a recall itself never expires. However, a particular VIN search may not display every older campaign, so ask a Subaru retailer about historical records when that matters.
Why do Subaru and NHTSA show different results?
The databases can differ in timing and coverage, especially for newly identified VINs and older campaigns. Save both results and ask a Subaru retailer to verify the VIN and open status.
Can I repair a recall myself or buy the parts?
Do not substitute a do-it-yourself repair or purchased parts for the official remedy. Contact a Subaru retailer; NHTSA describes the dealership recall repair as free.
