Use the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, not just its model year, to check a used Rivian R1T or R1S. Enter that VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s official recall lookup, review any result marked as an unrepaired recall, and ask Rivian to confirm the current remedy status before you buy. A model- or year-level recall list cannot tell you whether that particular truck or SUV is affected or whether its repair was completed.
This process takes only a few minutes, but the wording of the result matters. “Zero unrepaired recalls” means the NHTSA database found none associated with that VIN when you searched; it is not a lifetime guarantee that no campaign can appear later. Recently announced recalls can have VINs added over time, so repeat the search and contact Rivian if the announcement is new or the vehicle’s history is unclear.

What you need before checking
Ask the seller for the exact 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) before relying on any recall claim. The VIN identifies the individual vehicle and its factory configuration, not merely the R1T or R1S nameplate.
- The full 17-character VIN. Do not accept a partial VIN, stock number, license plate, or a screenshot with characters hidden.
- A way to compare the VIN. Match the seller’s number with the vehicle itself and the paperwork so a typo or swapped listing does not produce a false clean result.
- The seller’s service records, if available. These can show repairs already performed, but they do not replace the current VIN search.
- Time for a manufacturer confirmation. If the lookup lists a recall or the repair history conflicts with the database, ask Rivian Service Support to confirm whether the remedy is still open.
Where to find a Rivian’s VIN
NHTSA identifies several places to locate the VIN. Look through the lower-left corner of the windshield from outside the vehicle, on the label in the driver-side doorjamb, on the registration, or on insurance documents. Check at least two locations when possible. A VIN copied from an advertisement can contain a transcription error, while the physical plate and registration provide a useful cross-check.

How do I check whether a used Rivian has an open recall?
- Obtain the VIN. Request the complete 17-character number for the exact R1T or R1S you intend to purchase.
- Open NHTSA’s recall lookup. Use the official “Check for Recalls” vehicle search at NHTSA.gov/Recalls.
- Enter the VIN exactly. Recheck every character before submitting. A single incorrect character can return information for a different vehicle or no match.
- Read the VIN-specific result. Look specifically for unrepaired recalls associated with that VIN. Do not treat a general list of R1T or R1S campaigns as proof that this vehicle is included.
- Save the result. Record the search date and keep a screenshot or printout with the VIN visible. Recall databases change as manufacturers submit information and complete repairs.
- Confirm any listed item with Rivian. Give Rivian the VIN and ask whether the campaign remains open, whether parts or an appointment are available, and what remedy applies to this vehicle.
- Make the repair part of the deal. If a recall is open, have the seller complete the remedy before delivery or put completion in writing as a condition of purchase. Obtain documentation showing the repair was performed.
Why the VIN search is more reliable than a model-year list
Recall campaigns often cover only a production range, a specific component, or vehicles that received a particular earlier repair. Two R1S vehicles from the same model year can therefore have different recall status. A general campaign page explains what a manufacturer is investigating or repairing; the VIN lookup answers whether NHTSA currently associates an unrepaired safety recall with one vehicle.
Even a campaign that names a broad range of vehicles may depend on service records. For example, a recall can apply only to vehicles that received a particular replacement part or an earlier service procedure. The vehicle’s model, year, trim, and appearance cannot establish that history. Use those details to understand a campaign, then use the VIN and Rivian’s records to determine individual eligibility.
How to interpret a “zero unrepaired recalls” result
A clean result should be stated narrowly: NHTSA’s lookup found no unrepaired recall associated with that VIN at the time of the search. It does not certify that the vehicle has never been recalled, that every manufacturer campaign has been completed, or that no future recall will be announced.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →NHTSA warns that newly announced recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified. Manufacturers add VINs continuously as their lists are completed. If a recall was announced shortly before your purchase, search again after an interval and contact Rivian with the VIN rather than treating the first clean result as final.
The lookup also has limits. NHTSA identifies exclusions that can include some recalls more than 15 years old, recently announced campaigns whose affected VIN list is incomplete, non-safety manufacturer campaigns, vehicles built for international markets, and certain small-vehicle-maker recalls. A Rivian buyer should ask the manufacturer whenever the vehicle is imported, the result is ambiguous, or the seller describes a campaign that does not appear in the NHTSA search.
When should you repeat the check?
Run the search once when you first evaluate the vehicle and again as close to delivery as practical. A recall announcement can precede completion of the manufacturer’s affected-VIN list, and NHTSA says VINs are added continuously. A result saved several weeks earlier is therefore a snapshot, not a permanent certificate.

NHTSA also offers its SaferCar alert option, which can notify an owner about recalls associated with a vehicle after the VIN is entered. Alerts are useful after purchase, but they do not replace checking the vehicle before signing a contract.

What to do when the lookup shows an open recall
Ask Rivian to confirm the vehicle’s status
Provide Rivian Service Support with the VIN and the recall number or description shown by NHTSA. Ask whether the recall is still open for that vehicle, whether a remedy is available now, and whether the repair requires a Rivian service appointment or a specific part. A database entry can identify the campaign while the manufacturer’s system confirms the current remedy and appointment status.
Do not perform a safety-recall repair yourself
NHTSA says manufacturers must provide safe, free, effective remedies for safety recalls and monitors that process. Do not substitute aftermarket parts, an independent improvised repair, or a seller’s verbal assurance for the official remedy. Ask for a repair order or other manufacturer documentation after completion.
Set a purchase condition
The cleanest arrangement is for the seller to complete the recall before you take delivery. If that is not possible, write the purchase agreement so the seller must arrange the free remedy and provide proof by a defined date. Do not assume an open recall will be repaired automatically after the sale simply because the vehicle is under warranty or has a service appointment request.
Understand the possible remedy
NHTSA describes recall remedies as repair, replacement, refund, or, rarely, repurchase. The exact remedy depends on the campaign. Ask Rivian what will be done to this VIN, whether the part is available, and whether driving restrictions or interim instructions apply while you wait.

A safety-recall remedy is provided at no cost by the manufacturer. You should not buy a replacement component or pay an independent shop to reproduce Rivian’s recall procedure. Contact Rivian first to learn where the vehicle must be serviced and whether the required parts are currently available. Keep the appointment confirmation and final repair order with your purchase records.

NHTSA’s role is to monitor that manufacturers provide remedies that are safe, free, and effective. That does not mean every non-safety service campaign, maintenance item, or software improvement will appear in the recall lookup or receive the same treatment. Ask Rivian to distinguish an NHTSA safety recall from any separate manufacturer campaign described in the seller’s records.
Current Rivian recall examples that show why VIN confirmation matters
Recall 26V003 / Rivian FSAM-1794 (filed January 5, 2026)
NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report describes certain model-year 2022–2025 R1T and R1S vehicles that received a particular rear-suspension toe-link service under an earlier repair procedure. Eligibility depends on service records, so the model year alone cannot determine whether a vehicle is involved. The filing reports 19,641 potentially involved vehicles and an estimated defect rate of 1%, figures attributed to Rivian Automotive, LLC in the 2026 filing.
Rivian’s stated remedy is to replace potentially affected rear toe-link bolts using its updated service procedure. A buyer should enter the VIN in NHTSA’s lookup and then have Rivian confirm whether the vehicle received the earlier work and whether the updated remedy remains due. Do not infer applicability from the 2022–2025 range alone.

The owner notice says one or more headlamps may fail to illuminate at startup in cold temperatures because of incorrectly configured supplier parts. The notice states that recall service will be available at no cost once the remedy is ready and directs owners to Rivian Service Support.
This example demonstrates the difference between a campaign announcement and a completed repair. A vehicle may fall within the described model and year range, yet the individual VIN still needs checking. If the campaign appears, ask Rivian whether the remedy is available and whether the vehicle’s repair record shows completion.
How to verify that a seller’s “recall fixed” claim is real
- Request the VIN first. A seller who will not provide the VIN has not given you enough information to perform a vehicle-specific safety check.
- Run the NHTSA search yourself. Use the VIN from the vehicle or documents, not only the VIN copied into an advertisement.
- Compare the campaign number. If the seller says a recall was repaired, compare the campaign number or description with the NHTSA result and the service paperwork.
- Check the repair date and mileage. A dated repair order helps establish which work was performed, but Rivian should resolve any conflict between that document and its current record.
- Ask whether the remedy was the final procedure. Some campaigns involve an earlier repair, a revised procedure, or a replacement part. The 26V003 example specifically depends on whether an earlier toe-link service occurred.
- Repeat the search near delivery. A search performed weeks before closing can miss a newly added VIN or a newly announced campaign. Search again when the transaction is imminent.
General recall campaign versus individual repair status
| Information | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| R1T or R1S model-year campaign description | The component, condition, or production/service history covered by a campaign. | That your particular vehicle is included or unrepaired. |
| NHTSA VIN result | Whether NHTSA currently lists an unrepaired recall associated with the entered VIN. | That no new recall can be added later, or that every non-safety manufacturer campaign is shown. |
| Rivian confirmation | The manufacturer’s current vehicle record, remedy availability, and appointment information. | That a different VIN, vehicle, or prior owner’s paperwork applies to the car you are buying. |
| Completed repair order | Evidence that a named procedure was performed on a stated date and vehicle. | That another campaign is not open or that an updated procedure is unnecessary. |
When a recall result or repair record is unclear
Pause the purchase rather than guessing. Send Rivian the VIN and copies of the seller’s repair documents, asking the company to reconcile the records. If the NHTSA result lists an open item but the seller insists it was repaired, require Rivian confirmation or a new service visit. If the seller’s document lists a campaign that NHTSA does not show, ask whether it was a non-safety manufacturer campaign, a recently announced recall, or a record that has not yet synchronized.

NHTSA says manufacturer-provided VIN information can appear in its lookup before it is posted elsewhere on NHTSA’s site. That means the NHTSA page and Rivian’s system may not present identical timing or wording. Keep the VIN, search date, campaign number, and manufacturer response together so you can identify exactly what changed.
Special cases that need extra caution
An imported R1T or R1S, a vehicle previously registered outside the United States, or one with incomplete ownership records may not be represented in the same way as a U.S.-market vehicle. NHTSA lists international vehicles among the lookup limitations. Give Rivian the VIN and ask which market’s safety records apply before assuming a clean U.S. result covers the vehicle.
Likewise, a seller may describe a service action using an internal Rivian number rather than an NHTSA recall number. Record both identifiers and ask whether the action is safety-related, whether it is complete, and whether another updated procedure supersedes it. Do not reject a legitimate repair simply because the wording differs, but do not accept different wording as proof that an open recall is closed.
Do recalls expire on a used Rivian?
No. NHTSA states: “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” The age of the vehicle does not erase the manufacturer’s safety-recall obligation. However, the online lookup has the exclusions and timing limits described above, so contact Rivian when an old vehicle, imported vehicle, incomplete VIN history, or conflicting repair record produces an uncertain result.
Should you walk away from a used R1T or R1S with an open recall?
An open recall is not automatically a reason to reject the vehicle, but it is a reason to control the transaction. First determine whether Rivian has a remedy available and whether the repair can be completed before delivery. A seller who agrees to an authorized, documented repair is materially different from a seller who refuses to provide the VIN, dismisses the campaign, or asks you to accept an unresolved safety issue.
- Proceed only after repair: Rivian confirms the remedy is available, the repair is completed, and you receive documentation.
- Proceed conditionally: The agreement names the recall, requires the seller to arrange the no-cost remedy, and gives you documentation and a deadline.
- Delay or reject the deal: The VIN cannot be verified, the manufacturer cannot clarify the status, parts are unavailable with no workable plan, or the seller will not put the repair obligation in writing.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Get the exact 17-character VIN.
- Match it to the windshield plate, doorjamb label, registration, or insurance document.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s official recall lookup.
- Save the result and note the date searched.
- Read the specific unrepaired campaign, not just the model-year headline.
- Ask Rivian to confirm status, remedy availability, and any prior repair procedure.
- Have the seller complete open recall work before delivery whenever possible.
- Obtain a dated repair order or other manufacturer documentation.
- Repeat the VIN search close to purchase, especially after a new recall announcement.
- Keep the search result and repair records with your purchase documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a dealer give me a recall answer without the VIN?
A dealer can describe campaigns affecting an R1T or R1S, but only the exact 17-character VIN can produce a vehicle-specific NHTSA result. Ask for the VIN and verify it yourself against the truck or SUV and its paperwork.

What does “zero unrepaired recalls” actually mean?
It means NHTSA found no unrepaired recall associated with that VIN at the moment you searched. It does not guarantee that no future recall will be announced or that every non-safety Rivian campaign is included.
Is recall work free on a used Rivian?
NHTSA says manufacturers must provide safe, free, effective safety-recall remedies. Contact Rivian to confirm the remedy and availability for the VIN; do not pay for an aftermarket substitute.
Can an old Rivian recall be ignored because the vehicle is out of warranty?
No. NHTSA states that once a vehicle has been recalled, the recall never expires. Warranty status is separate from the manufacturer’s safety-recall obligation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the seller’s paperwork says repaired but NHTSA still shows open?
Give Rivian the VIN, campaign number, and repair order and ask it to reconcile the records. Require manufacturer confirmation or a new authorized repair before treating the recall as closed.
What if Rivian shows a campaign that NHTSA does not?
Ask whether it is a non-safety manufacturer campaign, a recently announced recall whose VIN list is still being completed, or a record awaiting synchronization. Keep both systems’ responses with the vehicle documents.
Should I repeat the lookup after buying?
Yes. Search again near delivery and after a newly announced campaign. You can also use NHTSA’s SaferCar alert option so later VIN-associated recalls are easier to track.
Can I repair a Rivian recall at an independent shop?
Use Rivian’s authorized remedy instructions rather than improvising a safety repair. Ask Rivian where the vehicle should be serviced and retain the completed repair order.

The Bottom Line
Get the exact VIN, run it through NHTSA, and have Rivian confirm and complete any open remedy before you take delivery. A clean result is only current as of the search date, while an open safety recall should be resolved with documented manufacturer work.
