For a used car in the United States, enter its 17-character VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall lookup at NHTSA.gov/Recalls. The result shows unrepaired recalls associated with that specific vehicle. A license-plate search is also available, but a year, make, and model search is not a substitute for checking the car’s VIN.
Check the car’s VIN before you buy
- Get the full 17-character VIN. Ask the seller, then compare it with the VIN visible at the lower-left corner of the windshield or on the label inside the driver-side doorjamb. The VIN may also appear on registration or insurance documents. NHTSA explains where to find it at its vehicle recall page.
- Search the VIN. Open NHTSA’s recall lookup and enter the VIN. Review the unrepaired recalls listed and keep the campaign details for follow-up.
- Confirm any open recall with the manufacturer’s dealership. Ask the seller whether the repair was completed, but do not rely only on the seller’s answer. A dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer can verify the status for the exact VIN and arrange any needed recall remedy.
- Follow interim safety instructions. If the automaker says not to drive the vehicle or to park it outside, follow that guidance while arranging the repair.
VIN, plate, and model searches are not interchangeable

NHTSA says its lookup can include manufacturer-provided recall information that may not yet appear on NHTSA’s own site. The agency’s guidance and lookup limitations are described at NHTSA’s recall page.
What a “0 unrepaired recalls” result means—and does not mean
A zero result means the lookup found no unrepaired recall associated with that VIN in the records it returned at that time. It is useful evidence, but not a guarantee that the vehicle has no safety issue or that every possible recall has been identified. NHTSA says its lookup does not show recalls that have already been repaired, certain new recalls before all affected VINs are identified, recalls more than 15 years old except where a manufacturer provides more coverage, some recalls by small manufacturers, non-safety campaigns, or recalls involving international vehicles. The VIN list for a new recall can change as affected vehicles are identified.
NHTSA says recalls do not expire, but its VIN lookup displays unrepaired recalls rather than a complete repair-history certificate. If you need to know whether an older recall was repaired, or a result is unclear, contact the manufacturer. The agency explains these distinctions in its recall FAQ.

If the lookup lists an unrepaired recall
Contact a dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer to confirm the campaign and schedule the recall repair. NHTSA says manufacturer-provided recall repairs are free; the automaker may also provide interim safety instructions to follow while you wait. If a seller’s account or a dealer’s information conflicts with the lookup, ask the manufacturer to verify the status against the exact VIN.
If you suspect a safety defect that is not part of an announced recall, that is a separate matter: NHTSA directs consumers to report suspected safety defects to the agency. Checking for an existing recall does not submit a defect report.

Keep checking after purchase
You can repeat the VIN lookup when you want an on-demand status check. NHTSA also offers its SaferCar app, which can alert you if it discovers a recall for a vehicle you add, as well as general recall email alerts. Alerts are useful for monitoring a car, but they do not replace a VIN-specific check when you are evaluating a particular used vehicle. See NHTSA’s recall information for available tools.

The recall lookup and alert options are digital government services; a paid scanner or generic OBD-II reader is not a substitute for checking official open-recall status.
