The Rivian R2 and Tesla Model Y overlap as five-seat electric SUVs, but they prioritize different things. In the U.S. figures available as of October 4, 2026, the Model Y has the higher top-end reported range and Edmunds found it charged slightly faster in its comparison. The R2 is shorter and taller, has more ground clearance, and is listed with more cargo capacity and towing capability. Its lowest starting price belongs to a Standard trim expected in 2027; Rivian lists the Performance trim as available now.
Those figures are not all directly equivalent: Rivian labels R2 range estimates preliminary, Model Y range varies by trim, and quoted prices may or may not include destination fees. The comparison below separates manufacturer specifications, Edmunds test results and fee-inclusive prices so you can compare the versions that actually fit your needs.
Range: Model Y leads the cited lineup, but trim and test method matter
Edmunds’ September 2026 comparison, republished by the Associated Press, lists Model Y EPA range figures from 294 miles for the base all-wheel-drive version to 357 miles for the rear-wheel-drive Premium. For the R2, it reports 275 miles for Standard, 345 miles for Standard Long Range and 330 miles for most other versions. Rivian’s current U.S. product page lists 275 miles for Standard and 330 miles for Premium and Performance, but describes those as preliminary estimates based on the EPA test cycle—not official EPA ratings.

Road-test results are a separate measure from EPA or preliminary estimates. Edmunds’ EV Range Test recorded 304 miles for the R2 Performance against its 330-mile estimate. In the same comparison, the tested rear-wheel-drive base Model Y covered 337 miles; the Model Y L covered 358 miles. These are results for the tested vehicles and conditions, not guaranteed distances for every trim or driver. Charging: both use NACS, while published speed claims need context
Both vehicles use NACS charging ports and have access to Tesla Superchargers, according to the Edmunds/AP comparison. That shared access makes route coverage less of a simple brand-versus-brand distinction; check the chargers available along your own routes and confirm access details for the specific vehicle and location.
Rivian claims the R2 can add 150 miles in 15 minutes and charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. Tesla advertises up to 162 miles in 15 minutes. Tesla says its miles-added figure assumes constant-speed highway driving at 65 mph, and cautions that charging performance varies with the charger, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Edmunds’ comparison found the Tesla charged slightly quicker in its test. These are not apples-to-apples guarantees: actual charging speed and useful range added depend on the vehicle, charger and conditions. Size and cargo: R2 is shorter and taller; cargo figures depend on measurement
Rivian lists the R2 at 185.9 inches long, 84.7 inches wide with mirrors, 78.1 inches with mirrors folded, 66.9 inches high and a 115.6-inch wheelbase. Tesla’s owner manual gives regular Model Y versions as roughly 188.6–188.7 inches long, 83.8 inches wide with mirrors, 78.0 inches with mirrors folded, 63.8–64.0 inches high and a 113.8-inch wheelbase. On those manufacturer dimensions, the R2 is about 2.7 inches shorter, 0.9 inch wider with mirrors folded and roughly 3 inches taller; its wheelbase is 1.8 inches longer. Tesla notes dimensions vary by configuration. The Model Y L is a separate, longer vehicle and is not included in these standard Model Y measurements.

Rivian lists 90.1 cubic feet of total R2 storage, including 79.4 cubic feet behind the front seats with the rear seats folded and 28.7 cubic feet in the rear cargo area. Tesla’s owner manual lists 75.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume for the five-seat Model Y Premium with the driver and front passenger. Edmunds/AP also compares 90.1 cubic feet for R2 with 75.5 cubic feet for Model Y, including underfloor storage. Cargo-volume conventions and seat positions affect the comparison, so these figures are useful capacity indicators rather than a perfectly standardized measurement. Capability, seating and ride: choose around how you use the SUV
Edmunds/AP lists maximum towing capacity at 4,400 pounds for R2 and 3,500 pounds for Model Y. Rivian lists 9.6 inches of R2 ground clearance, supporting its more trail-oriented positioning. Those specifications may matter more than a small difference in overall length if you need to tow or travel on rougher routes; confirm the tow rating and equipment for the exact configuration before towing.
The R2 is a five-seat vehicle. Selected Model Y versions offer a third row, so buyers who need more than five seats should compare those versions separately rather than treating every Model Y as the same layout. Edmunds describes passenger space as similar overall, with somewhat more rear headroom in the R2. Its comparison found the Model Y smoother over bumps and the R2 firmer; those are Edmunds’ driving impressions, not measurements that predict every driver’s experience.

For a different price basis, Edmunds/AP’s September 2026 comparison includes destination fees: it lists the R2 Standard at $46,485 and Performance at $59,485, and the Model Y lineup from $41,380 to $63,380 for the three-row Model Y L. The source does not provide a directly equivalent fee-inclusive R2 Premium figure. These figures are not a like-for-like trim comparison, and the lowest R2 price is for a later-available version.
