How to Check Recall Repairs and Service History by VIN

NHTSA’s VIN lookup checks for unrepaired safety recalls, not a vehicle’s full repair history. Learn how to verify recall work and assess service records.

In the U.S., use the free National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) VIN lookup to check for unrepaired safety recalls. To find out whether a recall repair was completed—or to build a service history—ask the manufacturer or dealer and review repair invoices and work orders. A commercial vehicle-history report may add service entries, but no VIN report guarantees a complete record.

Check for unrepaired safety recalls

NHTSA’s recall lookup reports unrepaired safety recalls in the tool’s coverage. It is not a lifetime record of every recall or repair: NHTSA excludes recalls already repaired, some recently announced recalls before affected VINs are identified, recalls older than 15 years subject to manufacturer-coverage exceptions, non-safety campaigns, and international recalls. The page’s own exclusion is “A safety recall that has already been repaired.”

  1. Find the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, commonly visible at the lower driver-side windshield or on registration and insurance documents. Check that it matches the vehicle before searching.
  2. Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. The page also offers a license-plate search option.
  3. If the result shows an unrepaired recall, note the campaign details and contact the manufacturer or a franchised dealer with the VIN. Confirm the remedy, parts availability, and appointment arrangements with them; recall remedies are handled through the manufacturer/dealer channel.
  4. If no recall appears, report the result narrowly: “NHTSA’s lookup showed no unrepaired recalls in its coverage when checked.” It does not establish that the vehicle was never recalled or that all previous repairs are recorded.

VIN results may change as campaigns are identified and VINs are added, so NHTSA advises checking periodically. For a completed recall repair, ask the manufacturer or dealer whether it can confirm vehicle-specific campaign or service information; do not assume a central lookup will show every completed repair.

Find service and repair records

Start with documents tied to the vehicle

Ask the owner or seller for invoices, repair orders, warranty records, and any manufacturer or dealer service printout. A useful document identifies the date, mileage, shop, and work performed. Check that the VIN or other vehicle details match, and compare odometer readings and dates across records. A dealer’s records may not include work done elsewhere, and a single invoice proves only the visit it describes.

Use a history report as a partial record

A commercial VIN-based report may show service or repair entries when those records were supplied to the provider. For example, CARFAX describes service categories such as oil changes, tire rotations, and component replacements, while noting that its reports depend on information provided to it. The FTC’s used-car guidance explains that some commercial reports may add accident and repair information.

Interpret an absent entry as “not found in this provider’s records,” not proof that the work never happened. The U.S. Department of Justice’s NMVTIS FAQ describes consumer reports as useful for title, latest reported odometer, brand, theft, and salvage or total-loss information—not as detailed maintenance ledgers. NMVTIS and a commercial service-history report answer different questions.

Choose the right source for each question

Source Useful for Important limitation
NHTSA VIN recall lookup Unrepaired safety recalls in its coverage Omits completed recalls and other categories; does not provide service history.
Manufacturer or dealer VIN inquiry Campaign status and vehicle-specific recall follow-up Dealer maintenance records may not include work performed elsewhere.
NMVTIS consumer report Title history, latest reported odometer, brands, theft, and salvage/total-loss data Not a detailed repair or maintenance history.
Commercial vehicle-history report, such as CARFAX Possible service, repair, accident, ownership, and other reported history Coverage depends on records supplied to that provider; an absent entry does not prove no event.
Seller or repair-shop invoices and work orders Details of a specific maintenance visit or repair Must be authentic and tied to the vehicle; may cover only one shop or period.
Independent inspection Present condition and issues a report cannot establish Assesses the vehicle at inspection time; does not reconstruct its full history.

When records conflict, compare the VIN, dates, mileage sequence, source, and the type of fact being claimed. A current open-recall status is not the same thing as a historical repair entry.

For a used-car purchase, verify the record trail

  1. Request the seller’s original invoices, work orders, and available manufacturer or dealer records.
  2. Check unrepaired safety recalls through NHTSA, then contact the manufacturer or dealer if a campaign appears.
  3. Consider an NMVTIS consumer report for title, odometer, brand, theft, and salvage-related information; use a commercial report if its possible service and repair entries would help.
  4. Compare report entries against documents, maintenance receipts or stickers, and the seller’s account. Ask about unexplained mileage gaps or inconsistencies.
  5. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. The FTC says a vehicle-history report is not a substitute for an independent inspection.

The process here applies to U.S. vehicles. For a vehicle registered elsewhere, use the relevant national or provincial regulator and manufacturer channels. NHTSA’s vPIC decodes basic vehicle and manufacturer information for model years 1981 forward; it is not a service-record database.
