Check the VIN in both Tesla’s VIN Recall Search and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall lookup. A year/make/model search can describe campaigns affecting some Model X vehicles, but it cannot prove that a particular vehicle still needs repair.
Neither a model-level campaign list nor a general internet search can establish that your vehicle has an open fire-related recall. A current VIN result, followed by Tesla confirmation when necessary, is the reliable way to answer that question. Tesla states that recall service is free regardless of a vehicle’s age or mileage.

What “fire recall” means for a Model X owner
A recall is a manufacturer or regulator action covering a defined safety defect in a defined population of vehicles. The population may be limited by VIN range, production date, component, software version, or another manufacturing criterion. Consequently, the fact that a filing mentions the Model X does not mean every Model X is affected.

“Fire recall” is also not a standard result category in either official VIN checker. A campaign may involve a condition that could contribute to overheating, short-circuiting, battery damage, crash-related hazards, or another risk, but the official record—not a headline or a forum post—must establish the actual hazard. The material available for the campaigns cited below does not establish a fire connection, so they should not be presented as fire recalls.

For an individual vehicle, the practical question is whether the VIN currently shows an unrepaired safety recall and what Tesla says the remedy is. If the lookup is silent but you smell burning, see smoke, observe unusual heat, or have another immediate safety concern, stop driving when safe, move away from the vehicle, and contact emergency services or Tesla roadside assistance as appropriate. A lookup is not a substitute for responding to an active hazard.
Find the complete 17-character VIN first
Both official lookups require the vehicle identification number (VIN). It is a unique 17-character identifier; a partial VIN, registration number, stock number, or license plate alone is not the same thing as entering the full VIN in the Tesla search.
Where to locate the VIN
- Look through the lower-left corner of the windshield from outside the vehicle. NHTSA identifies this as one location where the VIN is displayed.
- Check the vehicle title, registration, insurance documents, purchase paperwork, or Tesla account records.
- Compare the characters carefully. Confusing “0” with “O” or “1” with “I” can cause a failed or incorrect search.
Use the VIN belonging to the specific vehicle you are checking. If you are buying a used Model X, obtain the VIN from the vehicle itself and independently compare it with the seller’s documents before relying on a recall result.

What a Tesla result can establish
A Tesla VIN result is designed to identify open safety recalls applicable to that specific vehicle. It is more meaningful than a search for “Model X recalls” because it applies the campaign’s eligibility rules to one VIN. Record the campaign number and the stated remedy; those details will help Tesla service staff answer follow-up questions.
What to do if Tesla’s page is unavailable or unclear
Do not infer that no result means the vehicle has never been recalled. Try again later, verify every VIN character, and run the same VIN through NHTSA’s checker. If the two official sources disagree, or if a previous repair is not documented, contact Tesla and provide the VIN and any repair invoices you have.

NHTSA’s Check for Recalls service provides a second vehicle-specific check. It also connects owners with broader safety information, including investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. Use the VIN option rather than relying on the year, make, and model fields when your goal is to determine whether one Model X still needs a recall repair.
- Open NHTSA’s Check for Recalls page.
- Select the VIN search option.
- Enter the complete 17-character VIN and submit it.
- Read each returned campaign, paying attention to whether the record indicates an unrepaired recall and what remedy is described.
- Open linked record details when you need the campaign number, affected equipment, filing date, or manufacturer instructions.
NHTSA explains that a VIN search tells you whether a specific vehicle needs to be repaired as part of a recall. Its service is not a complete historical record of every campaign connected to a vehicle, however, and the exclusions below matter when interpreting a “no results” screen.
NHTSA VIN-search limitations
- Repaired recalls: A recall that has already been completed may no longer appear as an unrepaired action. A clean result therefore does not mean the vehicle was never recalled.
- Recently announced recalls: There can be a delay before a newly announced campaign is reflected in the VIN database.
- Recalls older than 15 years: NHTSA says its VIN lookup may omit recalls more than 15 years old.
- International recalls: Campaigns outside the United States may not be included. Import history, registration country, and market-specific parts can affect what appears.
For questions about whether a repair was actually completed, NHTSA directs owners to the manufacturer. Tesla is the party that can verify its service records, confirm the remedy for a particular configuration, and arrange the repair.

Use both official checks, then reconcile the results
| Question | Tesla VIN Recall Search | NHTSA VIN lookup |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle-specific open-recall check | Yes; Tesla’s manufacturer lookup uses the full VIN. | Yes; NHTSA uses the full VIN to identify recalls requiring repair. |
| Broader safety records | Focused on Tesla recall information. | Also exposes investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. |
| Data qualification | Live page displayed recall data as of September 10, 2026 when reviewed. | Results can omit repaired, some newly announced, older-than-15-year, and international recalls. |
| Repair-history questions | Contact Tesla if the result or prior service record is unclear. | NHTSA recommends contacting the manufacturer for repair-completion questions. |
| Cost of recall remedy | Tesla says recall service is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage. | NHTSA directs owners to the manufacturer for the remedy. |
Running both searches reduces the chance that a database limitation or a temporary display problem leaves you without an answer. Keep screenshots or PDF copies with the search date, because a later result may change after a campaign is announced or a repair is recorded.
How to interpret a “no open recall” result
A result showing no unrepaired recall is useful, but it has a precise meaning: the checker did not identify an open recall for that VIN within the records and limitations of that service at that time. It does not certify that the vehicle has never been recalled, that every historical defect has been eliminated, or that no future campaign will be announced.
If both Tesla and NHTSA show no open recall
Save the result dates and continue with ordinary vehicle-safety checks. If your concern relates to a recent announcement, wait for the manufacturer’s VIN records to update and contact Tesla directly rather than assuming the vehicle is outside the campaign. If the vehicle was imported or has spent time outside the United States, ask Tesla which market’s recall records apply.
If the sources disagree
Do not choose the more reassuring result without investigating. Give Tesla the VIN, the NHTSA campaign number or screenshot, and any evidence of earlier service. Ask whether the campaign applies to your exact configuration and whether Tesla’s system shows the remedy as completed. Keep the service reference number and appointment confirmation.
If the vehicle has symptoms
Recall status does not diagnose an individual car. Burning odor, smoke, visible damage, abnormal heat, warning messages, or a damaged high-voltage battery require immediate safety judgment. Follow the vehicle owner’s emergency guidance, avoid touching damaged high-voltage components, and seek professional assistance. Do not wait for a website to declare a recall before responding to an active hazard.

What to do when an open recall appears
- Read the remedy and operating instructions. Some notices may contain interim precautions or restrictions while parts or software are prepared.
- Contact Tesla through its service channel. Provide the VIN and campaign number, describe any symptoms, and ask whether the remedy is mobile service, an over-the-air update, or an appointment at a service location.
- Ask about driving restrictions. If the notice warns against driving, follow that warning and request towing or roadside assistance rather than taking the vehicle to the service center yourself.
- Keep documentation. Save the appointment, repair order, and completion confirmation. These records are useful if a future lookup still displays the campaign or if you sell the vehicle.
- Verify completion. After Tesla reports the remedy complete, rerun the VIN checks and retain the final service record. The NHTSA result may update later than Tesla’s internal record.
Tesla’s Recall Information page states: “If your Tesla is included in a recall, service to address the issue will be provided for free regardless of age or mileage.” Do not pay an independent shop for a substitute repair when Tesla is offering the recall remedy; ask Tesla what inspection or related work, if any, is outside the recall.
Understand campaign filings without treating them as VIN answers
NHTSA publishes Part 573 safety-recall reports that describe a campaign’s population and defect information. These filings are valuable for understanding why a campaign exists, but they are not a live statement that every listed Model X remains unrepaired.
| Filing | What it identifies | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Recall 24V-615, submitted September 12, 2024 | The report lists 2016 Tesla Model X vehicles in the campaign population. | It does not determine whether a particular VIN is included, whether that vehicle’s repair remains open, or whether the campaign is fire-related. |
| Recall 23V-743, report submitted March 19, 2025 | The report includes select Model X vehicles from model years 2021–2024 manufactured July 14, 2021 through January 25, 2024. | The selective population means model year or build window alone cannot determine whether a VIN is affected, and the filing does not by itself establish a fire connection. |
These examples illustrate why a static list is not an answer to “Does my car have an open recall?” Use the filing to understand a campaign’s scope, then use the VIN lookup and Tesla’s service records to determine the status of one vehicle.

- Recall: A defined safety campaign with a remedy or corrective action for an eligible population.
- Investigation: NHTSA is examining a potential safety issue; an investigation is not automatically a recall.
- Complaint: An owner or other party reported a problem. A complaint is evidence of a report, not proof that every vehicle has the same defect.
- Manufacturer communication: Information supplied by the manufacturer that may describe a condition, inspection, or service action.
Use the record number and date when contacting Tesla. Avoid treating a complaint count or an investigation headline as proof that your Model X has an open fire recall.
Set up future notifications with SaferCar
NHTSA offers free SaferCar alerts for recall notifications. Register the Model X VIN in the service so you can receive future information when a campaign is published or updated. Alerts are useful for ongoing monitoring, but they do not replace a current VIN lookup when you are buying a vehicle, responding to a warning, or investigating a present safety concern.
Keep your contact details current and continue checking both official sources after receiving an alert. A notification may identify a campaign before every detail is visible in the VIN search, particularly for a newly announced recall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes that produce a misleading answer
- Searching only “Model X fire recall.” Search results may mix old news, unrelated battery incidents, and campaigns that do not apply to your VIN.
- Using a year/make/model search as proof. General searches describe campaign information; they do not establish that a specific vehicle remains unrepaired.
- Entering a partial or mistyped VIN. Check all 17 characters against the windshield and documents.
- Assuming “no results” means no history. Repaired recalls may disappear from the unrepaired list, and NHTSA lists additional exclusions.
- Calling a campaign fire-related without evidence. Confirm that the official defect description actually makes that connection.
- Paying for recall service. Tesla says eligible recall service is free regardless of age or mileage; confirm with Tesla before authorizing unrelated paid work.
- Repairing a high-voltage safety issue independently. Follow Tesla’s recall instructions and use qualified service rather than attempting owner repairs.
When to contact Tesla directly
Contact Tesla with the VIN whenever the lookup identifies an open campaign, a previous repair is uncertain, the Tesla and NHTSA results differ, or the vehicle was imported and market coverage is unclear. Also contact Tesla if the vehicle displays symptoms that could relate to a safety issue even when no recall appears. Ask for the campaign number, eligibility confirmation, remedy, driving instructions, and written completion record.
NHTSA’s Resources Related to Investigations and Recalls page explains that recalls do not expire. The agency’s FAQ states, “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” That does not mean every old campaign will remain visible in the VIN tool; it means an eligible repair obligation does not vanish simply because time has passed. Tesla can clarify how an older campaign is recorded and whether its remedy has been completed.
A practical record-keeping checklist
- Write down the VIN exactly as entered.
- Record the date and time of each Tesla and NHTSA search.
- Save screenshots or downloaded pages showing the result and campaign number.
- Keep Tesla appointment confirmations, repair orders, invoices, and completion notices.
- For a used vehicle, retain the seller’s disclosures separately from the official VIN results.
- After service, rerun the lookups and keep the updated result with the repair record.
This file gives you a defensible history without confusing a general campaign announcement with the status of your particular Model X.
