To check how a car performs for women and people of different sizes, look up the exact model year in the official crash-testing program for the market where it was sold. In the United States, read both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star Safety Ratings and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) results. For European-market vehicles, use Euro NCAP.
Do not stop at the star count. Open the individual frontal, side, rear-seat, pole and crash-avoidance results, then check the dummy’s size, seat position, crash direction and injury measures. A small-female dummy appears in some tests, but no overall rating proves that every body size, sex, stature or seating position was tested in every crash scenario.

What a crash rating can—and cannot—tell you
Crash ratings are controlled comparisons. They show how a particular vehicle configuration performed in defined laboratory impacts, using specified dummies, speeds, barriers and scoring rules. That evidence is useful when comparing cars, but it is not a prediction of exactly what will happen to one person in a real collision.
A rating usually combines several pieces of information:

- Occupant injury measures: readings from body regions such as the head, neck, chest, pelvis, legs or thighs.
- Restraint performance: how belts, airbags and seats manage occupant movement.
- Crash avoidance: whether automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, headlights or other systems help prevent or reduce a crash.
- Child and rear-seat protection: categories that may use different dummies and procedures from the front-seat tests.
Because programs measure different things, a five-star result from one organization is not directly interchangeable with a five-star result from another. Compare vehicles within the same program, model year and protocol whenever possible.
Step 1: Identify the exact vehicle before searching
Start with the vehicle’s model year, not just its badge. Safety structures, airbags, seat belts, sensors and software can change during a generation. A result for a 2024 vehicle should not automatically be applied to a 2021 version.
Record the details that can change a rating:
- Model year and market (for example, United States or Europe).
- Body style, such as sedan, hatchback, wagon, coupe or SUV.
- Trim level and optional safety equipment.
- Drive layout or battery configuration when the rating page lists separate versions.
- Whether the test vehicle had the standard equipment or an optional package.
Use the program’s own vehicle page and confirm that the tested configuration matches the car you are considering. If a page lists several variants under one name, read the notes explaining which equipment is included.
How to check a U.S. vehicle with NHTSA
Open the 5-Star Safety Ratings result
NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) assigns the familiar U.S. 1-to-5-star ratings. The vehicle page normally separates frontal, side and rollover results. Select the model year and body style, then open each component rather than relying only on the overall stars.
NHTSA explains frontal results in terms of the likelihood of specified injuries for occupants in particular front-seat positions. Read whether the result is for the driver, front passenger or both, and note the body regions used in the scoring.
Read the side-pole information carefully
NHTSA’s side-pole test places a small-sized adult-female dummy in the driver seat. That is important evidence for a shorter, lighter occupant, but it applies to that test condition only. It does not mean a small-female dummy was used for every frontal, side-impact, rear-seat or rollover test.

When viewing the side-pole result, check:
- The dummy’s seat position and whether the result is for the driver.
- The impact direction and barrier or pole configuration.
- Head, chest, pelvis and other injury readings shown by the program.
- Whether the tested vehicle included the same side airbags and structural equipment as the car for sale.
Understand NHTSA’s dummy descriptions
NHTSA’s dummy resources identify several sizes and designs, including a Hybrid III 5th-percentile adult-female dummy. “5th-percentile” is a size reference from the population used to design the dummy; it is not a guarantee that every person below or above that size will experience the same forces.
The dummy type is one line in the test record, not a demographic verdict. A female dummy in one impact does not establish performance for all women, pregnant occupants, older adults, people with disabilities or people who sit unusually close to the wheel.
How to check the same vehicle with IIHS
Use the vehicle ratings and protocol pages together
IIHS publishes separate results for crashworthiness and crash-avoidance performance. Open the individual tests—such as the moderate-overlap frontal test, small-overlap frontal test, side test, roof-strength test, head restraints and seats, headlights and front crash-prevention systems—when those results are available for the model year.
IIHS uses its own barriers, speeds, overlap percentages, dummies and grading rules. Therefore, an IIHS “Good” or “Acceptable” rating should be compared with another IIHS result under the same protocol, not converted into a NHTSA star count.
Check which occupant the test represents
IIHS protocol information identifies the dummy and seating position used for a test. In the frontal crash tests discussed in IIHS research on sex differences, the dummy represents an average-size man. Keep that statement tied to those referenced frontal tests; it should not be generalized to every IIHS test or to every organization’s procedure.

Separate crash avoidance from occupant protection
A vehicle can perform well in an impact and poorly in avoiding one, or the reverse. Read the automatic emergency-braking and pedestrian-prevention results separately from crashworthiness. For daily safety, both categories matter, but they answer different questions.
How to check a European vehicle with Euro NCAP
For a vehicle sold in Europe, use the Euro NCAP result for the exact tested model and year. Euro NCAP reports adult-occupant, child-occupant, vulnerable-road-user and safety-assist categories under its own protocol.
Euro NCAP’s dummy family includes a small-female adult dummy. Look at the test matrix to see where that dummy appears, which seat it occupies and which injury measurements are reported. Do not infer that every Euro NCAP impact uses the same dummy.
Recommended Free Tools
Euro NCAP stars also include crash-avoidance and assistance performance. A high overall score is therefore a program-specific summary of both protection and assistance—not a universal ranking of vehicles by sex, height or weight. Euro NCAP stars should not be compared directly with U.S. NHTSA stars as though both programs used identical tests.
What the tests say about women and different body types
A female dummy is not a complete “women’s rating”
Crash-test dummies are physical measurement devices. A small-female dummy can reveal how a restraint system loads a smaller body in a particular impact, but it cannot represent the full range of women’s heights, weights, ages, seating postures, bone strength or medical conditions.
Review each result for three questions:
- Which dummy? Note the sex designation, percentile size and model family.
- Where was it seated? Driver, front passenger and rear passenger positions can have different belts, airbags and available space.
- Which crash? Frontal, side, pole, rear and rollover tests create different loading patterns.
If one of those details is missing, the responsible conclusion is “not stated,” not that the car protects every occupant equally.

Why women’s injury statistics need context
IIHS reported in 2022 that women in the study were three times as likely to experience a moderate injury and twice as likely to experience a serious injury in frontal crashes. Those are study findings about injury differences in frontal crashes, not an individual driver’s odds and not a rating for any particular vehicle.

Body size is only one variable
Height and weight influence belt fit, airbag distance and the way the body moves before restraint engagement. So do age, pregnancy, physical disability, seating posture and whether a person is driving or riding as a passenger. Public ratings cannot test every combination.
For a shorter driver, use the rating as one part of a practical fit check:
- Adjust the seat so you can reach the pedals without sitting extremely close to the steering wheel.
- Keep adequate distance from the airbag while maintaining control.
- Place the shoulder belt across the center of the chest and the lap belt low across the pelvis.
- Verify that the head restraint supports the back of your head, not just your neck.
- Have the actual driver sit in the vehicle and test visibility, controls and belt fit before buying.
How to compare two cars without mixing unlike tests
Build the comparison from matching evidence. The following fields prevent a misleading side-by-side chart:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Program | NHTSA, IIHS or Euro NCAP | Each organization uses different tests and scoring. |
| Model year | Exact year and tested body style | Structures and safety equipment can change. |
| Crash mode | Frontal, side, pole, rear, rollover or avoidance | A result in one crash direction does not cover another. |
| Occupant position | Driver, front passenger or rear passenger | Belts, airbags and available space differ by seat. |
| Dummy | Type, sex designation and size percentile | Shows which body representation the measurement covers. |
| Injury measure | Head, neck, chest, pelvis, legs or other reported regions | Overall grades can conceal a weak result in one body region. |
| Safety equipment | Standard or optional; package name if listed | The tested configuration may not match every trim. |
| Crash avoidance | Automatic braking, pedestrian detection, headlights and related scores | Prevention performance is separate from impact protection. |
Compare vehicles only after these fields line up. If one car has a current small-overlap test and the other has only an older frontal procedure, label the difference instead of treating the grades as equivalent.

A practical research workflow for car shopping
- Write down the target vehicle. Include model year, body style, trim and market.
- Open the appropriate official program. Use NHTSA and IIHS for a U.S.-market vehicle, or Euro NCAP for a European-market vehicle.
- Save the component results. Record frontal, side, pole, rollover, rear-seat and crash-avoidance grades that are actually listed.
- Read the protocol notes. Identify dummy type, seat position, impact direction, speed and any special equipment.
- Mark missing evidence. Write “not stated” when the page does not identify a body type, seat or test condition you need.
- Check equipment compatibility. Confirm that the vehicle you can buy has the airbags, belts, sensors and lighting equipment present on the tested vehicle.
- Compare like with like. Use the same program and model year where possible, then compare the same crash mode and occupant position.
- Perform an in-person fit check. Have the intended driver and passengers test seat adjustment, belt fit, visibility and access.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Searching for a universal “safest car for women” list
No single list can cover every woman’s size, posture, age and seating position. Start with the exact vehicles you are considering and inspect their test details. A model that scores well for one small-female side-pole test may not have equivalent evidence for a different front-seat or rear-seat scenario.
Assuming a five-star score means five stars in every test
Overall stars are summaries. Open the component scores to find whether a vehicle’s result is limited by frontal injury measures, side protection, rollover resistance or missing crash-avoidance equipment.
Treating NHTSA and IIHS as interchangeable
They are separate programs with different protocols. Use each as additional evidence, but do not average their scores or translate one organization’s grade into the other’s scale.
Applying an old result to a new vehicle
Verify the model year and any note about redesigns or equipment changes. If the program has not tested the newer version, say that the newer version’s result is not established rather than borrowing the older score.
Assuming a small dummy represents every short driver
A dummy is a standardized instrument, not a complete human model. Use the rating for comparison, then confirm that the real driver can achieve safe belt fit and steering-wheel distance.
What is known about newer female dummies
A 2025 U.S. Department of Transportation announcement described the advanced THOR-05F small-female frontal dummy design. The announcement describes the design; by itself, it does not prove that the dummy has been adopted into a binding regulation or incorporated into current consumer ratings.
Before relying on THOR-05F for a purchase decision, look for a final rule, an updated test protocol or an official rating page that explicitly says the device was used. Until then, distinguish a design announcement from a completed change to the ratings you are reading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to state your conclusion accurately
A defensible conclusion names the evidence and its limits. For example: “This 2024 model earned a strong result in the listed side-pole test using a small-female driver dummy, while the published frontal test uses a different dummy and does not establish protection for every body size.” That wording tells a shopper what was measured without turning one test into a universal promise.
When the data are incomplete, the best answer is still useful: identify the tests that exist, the occupant representation they use, the equipment fitted to the test car and the questions the rating page does not answer. Then combine that information with a hands-on seating and belt-fit check.
