Germany’s 2026 E‑Auto‑Förderung can help eligible private households buy or lease a new electric passenger car. Applications are submitted online through the federal Förderzentrale Deutschland, and the vehicle may qualify retroactively if it was first registered in Germany from 1 January 2026. Before applying, check your taxable household income, children under 18, vehicle class and powertrain, German registration, private-asset use, and the required BundID authentication.
Who can apply for the German electric-car subsidy?
The federal program is for a private individual acquiring an eligible new passenger vehicle for private assets. It is not described as a general grant for used cars, company fleets or business applicants. The applicant, not a dealer or employer, must meet the household-income and identity requirements.

Private applicant only
The published eligibility description identifies private persons as applicants. A company, sole-trader fleet or other business applicant should not treat this program as a business-vehicle incentive. If a vehicle has mixed use or is booked as a business asset, confirm the treatment with the current BAFA guidance before signing a contract.

Taxable household income ceiling
Eligibility is based on taxable annual household income, not a gross salary figure or the purchase price of the car. The baseline ceiling is €80,000. The ceiling rises by €5,000 for each of up to two children under 18, so the published maximum is €85,000 for one qualifying child and €90,000 for a household with at least two qualifying children.

Use the taxable household figure that the application rules request. Do not substitute monthly take-home pay, turnover, or an estimate of net income. If your figure is close to a threshold, retain the underlying tax information and check the live rules before submitting.
Children count in two different calculations
Children under 18 can affect both eligibility and the grant amount. For the income ceiling, the increase is €5,000 per child, limited to two children. For the grant itself, the published table provides €500 per child, also limited to two. The program page should be used to confirm that a particular child meets the applicable definition at the time of application.
What vehicle and transaction qualify?
New passenger vehicle in EU class M1
The vehicle must be new, electrically powered and in European Union vehicle class M1, the category used for passenger cars. It must be first registered domestically in Germany and allocated to private assets. The federal description lists battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and externally chargeable hybrid-electric vehicles.

The published program covers acquiring a new vehicle by purchase or by lease. A lease is not automatically excluded, but the application must match the transaction and evidence requested by the current portal instructions. Keep the contract, registration information and any other records the portal requests.
Plug-in hybrids and range extenders have an extra condition
Plug-in hybrids and range-extender vehicles are included in a separate grant tier, but they must also satisfy additional climate-related conditions. The public summary does not establish the complete technical test or confirm any particular model. Check the model-specific rules on the live program page and in the current BAFA guidance before you commit to a vehicle.

Registration date and retroactive coverage
The German Federal Government says qualifying vehicles first registered from 1 January 2026 can be covered retroactively. “Retroactive” does not remove the other requirements: the applicant, income, vehicle class, private-asset allocation and any powertrain conditions still have to qualify. It also does not tell you how long you have to file or which evidence is required, so verify those points before applying.
How much money is available?
The subsidy is a combination of a vehicle-type base amount, a child addition and income-related additions. It is not one flat payment for every electric car.

The income wording is strict. The first income addition applies below €60,000, and the higher total of €2,000 applies below €45,000. An income figure exactly at €60,000 is not “below” €60,000; an income figure exactly at €45,000 is not “below” €45,000 for the lower step. Do not round a boundary figure into a more generous tier.
Worked calculations
- Battery-electric car, €62,000 taxable household income, one child: €3,000 base plus €500 child addition equals €3,500, assuming all vehicle conditions are met.
- Battery-electric car, €58,000 income, one child: €3,000 base plus €500 child addition plus €1,000 income addition equals €4,500.
- Battery-electric car, €44,000 income, two children: €3,000 base plus €1,000 child additions plus €2,000 total income-related additions equals the published €6,000 maximum.
- Plug-in hybrid, €50,000 income, no children: €1,500 base plus €1,000 income addition equals €2,500, provided the additional climate conditions are satisfied.
- Plug-in hybrid, €44,000 income, two children: €1,500 base plus €1,000 child additions plus €2,000 total income-related additions equals the published €4,500 maximum.
These examples show the arithmetic in the government’s published table; they are not a model-eligibility determination. A plug-in hybrid must pass its separate climate-related test, and every vehicle must meet the new M1, German-registration and private-asset requirements.
Eligibility checklist before you open the application
Run this check in order. If any answer is uncertain, resolve it before signing or filing.

- Applicant: You are applying as a private person, not for a business fleet or business asset.
- Household income: Your taxable annual household income is no more than €80,000, adjusted upward by €5,000 for each of no more than two children under 18.
- Vehicle status: The car is new, not used, and belongs to EU class M1.
- Powertrain: It is battery-electric, fuel-cell or an externally chargeable hybrid-electric vehicle listed by the program. For a plug-in hybrid or range extender, its additional climate conditions are confirmed.
- Registration: It will be first registered in Germany. If it was already registered, check whether the first-registration date is on or after 1 January 2026 and whether the retroactive filing rules apply.
- Private assets: The vehicle will be allocated to private assets.
- Transaction: You are buying or leasing a new vehicle under a transaction accepted by the program.
- Identity: You can submit with a BundID authenticated by Online-Ausweis at trust level “high” or an ELSTER certificate at trust level “substantial.”
Basic BundID registration with only a username and password is not enough to submit an application. A representative can be authorized to apply, but the application still needs the qualifying authentication method.

Option 1: Online-Ausweis
Choose a BundID sign-in using the Online-Ausweis method and complete authentication at the required “high” trust level. If your account currently has only basic credentials, follow BundID’s account-upgrade instructions before entering the subsidy application. Do not wait until the final submission screen to discover that the account has the wrong trust level.
Option 2: ELSTER certificate
An ELSTER certificate can authenticate the BundID at the program’s “substantial” trust level. Make sure the certificate is available to the person who will submit the application and that the BundID account is connected to that method before you start the form.
If someone else files for you
The portal information says a representative can be authorized to apply. Decide who will be the applicant and who will act as representative, then follow the authorization workflow shown in the portal. Keep a copy of the authorization and the submission confirmation.
How to apply online through the federal portal
The application route is digital. The federal program is implemented by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA), while the application listing is provided through the Förderzentrale Deutschland.

- Confirm the live program notice. Open the official Förderzentrale and select the E‑Auto‑Förderung of the Federal Ministry for the Environment. Read the current notice before relying on a summary written earlier in 2026.
- Classify the vehicle. Record whether it is battery-electric, fuel-cell, plug-in hybrid or range extender. Confirm that it is new, M1, intended for private assets and to be first registered in Germany. For a plug-in vehicle, verify the additional climate conditions for the exact model and configuration.
- Check the registration date. If the vehicle was first registered on or after 1 January 2026, check whether the retroactive provision applies to your filing situation. A dealer order date or delivery date is not the same thing as first registration.
- Calculate your household tier. Use taxable annual household income, then apply the €80,000 ceiling and the €5,000-per-child increases for up to two children under 18. Separately calculate the grant tier using the below-€60,000 and below-€45,000 thresholds.
- Prepare qualifying authentication. Sign in to BundID with Online-Ausweis at “high” trust level or an ELSTER certificate at “substantial” trust level. Upgrade a basic account before proceeding.
- Open the E‑Auto‑Förderung application. From the Förderzentrale listing, select the application function and sign in through BundID. Enter the applicant, household, vehicle and transaction details exactly as they appear in your supporting records.
- Provide evidence requested by the portal. The published overview does not provide a complete upload-document list in advance. Use the live form’s instructions and current BAFA guidance rather than assuming that a purchase contract, tax document or registration record is always sufficient or always required.
- Review every threshold and date. Check spelling, taxable-income figures, the number and ages of children, vehicle identification details, first-registration date and whether the transaction is a purchase or lease. Correct errors before submission.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Keep the electronic confirmation, application reference and copies of everything submitted. These records are important if the authority asks for clarification.
- Respond to follow-up requests. Monitor the contact channel used in the application and answer BAFA requests within the deadline shown in the notice. Do not assume that a submitted form is an approval.
Deadlines, evidence and what is not yet specified
The government’s public summary confirms retroactive eligibility for qualifying vehicles first registered from 1 January 2026, but the published material does not establish a single universal application deadline or a complete list of documents for every purchase and lease case. Those details can change with the live guideline and portal workflow.
Before you sign a vehicle contract or rely on a retroactive filing, read the current BAFA program guidance linked from the official portal. Common mistakes and how to recover
Using gross salary instead of taxable household income
The program uses taxable household annual income. Recalculate with the figure requested by the application and check how the current guidance defines household income. If the result is near €60,000, €45,000 or the eligibility ceiling, do not round it.
Assuming every electric-looking vehicle qualifies
Electric propulsion alone is not enough. The vehicle must be new, M1, first registered in Germany and assigned to private assets. A plug-in hybrid or range extender also has additional climate-related requirements that are not established by the general summary.
Trying to submit with a basic BundID
A username-and-password account can be useful for starting BundID registration, but the program requires Online-Ausweis at “high” trust level or ELSTER at “substantial” trust level for submission. Upgrade and authenticate before completing the form.

Confusing delivery with first registration
The retroactive rule refers to first registration from 1 January 2026. Keep the registration date separate from the order date, invoice date and handover date, and follow the portal’s evidence instructions.
Filing without checking current instructions
The program is time-sensitive. The exact upload list and deadline are not established in the public summary, so use the live Förderzentrale and BAFA guidance immediately before filing. If the portal rejects a document or asks for clarification, use the reference number in your correspondence and contact BAFA rather than submitting duplicate applications.
How the 2026 program is being funded
The German Federal Government says €3 billion has been allocated from the Climate and Transformation Fund. Its 2026 estimate is support for about 800,000 vehicles through 2029. A government update dated 8 October 2026 reported around 100,000 applications approved at that point; that is a dated status figure, not a promise about approvals after 8 October.

In English, Schneider said the program supports the environment, the automotive industry and households that otherwise could not afford an electric car, while reducing dependence on expensive diesel and petrol. The quotation describes the policy rationale; it does not change the eligibility rules or guarantee an application.
Final pre-submission checklist
- You are applying as a private individual.
- Your taxable household income fits the applicable ceiling after counting no more than two children under 18.
- The vehicle is new, EU class M1, electrically powered and assigned to private assets.
- The vehicle will be or was first registered in Germany from 1 January 2026, and the retroactive rule fits your case.
- You have checked the separate climate conditions if the vehicle is a plug-in hybrid or range extender.
- You know whether the transaction is a purchase or lease and can supply the evidence requested in the live form.
- Your BundID uses Online-Ausweis at “high” trust level or an ELSTER certificate at “substantial” trust level.
- You have read the current BAFA instructions for deadlines and documents.
- You saved the submission confirmation and will monitor follow-up messages.
