If you move the wheel first and then alter the seat, your eye line changes and the panel can become partly hidden. Setting the seat first gives you a stable reference for steering-wheel height and reach. Before touching a seat or the wheel
- Stop completely. Select Park or apply the parking brake as appropriate, and make all seat and steering-wheel changes while the vehicle is stationary. The 308 and 508 handbooks state that steering-wheel adjustment must only be carried out when stationary.
- Check the area around the seat. Look for a passenger’s feet, bags, child-seat components or other objects before sliding a seat rearward or lowering it. The 208 handbook specifically warns you to check for people or objects before moving the seat backwards.
- Use your normal driving posture. Sit in the position you will actually use, rather than leaning forward to obtain a temporary view.
- Keep the wheel’s restraint system in mind. Do not move the wheel so close that it compromises a comfortable, controlled posture or the airbag clearance specified in your handbook.
Step-by-step: set a clear i-Cockpit view
1. Adjust the head restraint
Raise or lower the head restraint so it supports the back of your head. It is the first item in the 208’s published sequence because it affects how far back you naturally sit. Keep the restraint aligned with your head rather than using it as a substitute for changing the backrest angle.
2. Set the backrest angle
Sit fully back against the seat and bring the backrest as upright as is practical while remaining comfortable. A reclined backrest moves your eyes farther from the intended viewing line and often encourages you to raise the wheel to compensate. Make the change with the vehicle stopped, using the manual wheel or electric switch fitted to your seat.
3. Set cushion height
Adjust the front seat cushion or height control until your eyes look toward the centre of the windscreen while your shoulders remain against the backrest. The 2020 208 handbook gives that eye-line guidance. It is a posture reference for that vehicle, not a universal measurement for every Peugeot or every driver.
Check your leg position at the same time. With the pedals fully pressed, your legs should remain slightly flexed rather than locked straight. If you cannot reach the pedals without stretching, move the seat forward; if your knees are tightly bent, move it back while checking that the display remains visible.
4. Set fore-and-aft seat position
Slide the seat until you can operate the pedals with the slight knee flex described above and keep your back against the backrest. Make small changes, because a few centimetres alter both your eye height and the apparent position of the instrument panel. Recheck that no object or person is behind the seat before moving it rearward.
5. Release the steering-wheel adjustment
Locate the steering-column adjustment control below or beside the wheel. Depending on the model, it may be a locking lever or another release control. Pull or move it only while stopped, then use both hands to position the wheel. The 308 and 508 instructions describe releasing the control before setting the wheel and returning the control to its locked position afterward.
6. Set steering-wheel reach
Move the wheel toward or away from your chest until your arms are relaxed with your shoulders still against the seat. The 208 handbook specifies at least 25 cm between the steering wheel and the sternum for that particular model and manual edition. Treat that figure as 208-specific guidance, not a blanket setting for all Peugeot vehicles; follow the handbook supplied for your car if it gives different limits.

Reach should let you turn the wheel without stretching and should leave a clear sightline to the raised display. Do not pull the wheel so close that you gain a better view at the expense of a safe, natural posture.
7. Set steering-wheel height
Raise or lower the wheel until its rim does not cover the information you need to read. The correct height depends on your seat height, torso length and the display fitted to the car, so there is no single numeric setting that works for every i-Cockpit. Keep enough clearance for comfortable hand movement and a relaxed shoulder position.
8. Lock the wheel firmly
Push the adjustment lever or control fully back into its locking position. Test the wheel with gentle up-and-down and in-and-out pressure; it should remain fixed. Never drive with the column release partly open or with the wheel able to move.
9. Verify the instrument panel from the settled position
Remain seated fully back, look straight ahead and read the complete panel without ducking, leaning sideways or looking through the steering-wheel spokes. The 208 handbook specifically asks the driver to check that its “head-up” instrument panel can be viewed correctly over the smaller-diameter wheel.

10. Set the mirrors last
Once the seat and wheel are locked, adjust the interior rear-view mirror and both door mirrors. The 208 handbook places mirrors at the end of the sequence because changing your seating position afterward would alter the mirror coverage.
What Peugeot means by i-Cockpit
The name describes a driving layout rather than one single display technology. Peugeot’s brand description identifies three elements: a compact steering wheel, an elevated instrument display and a central touchscreen. Depending on the vehicle, the display may be a conventional digital or analogue-style panel viewed above the rim; the phrase does not guarantee a projector that places graphics on the windscreen.

Peugeot says the concept debuted in 2012. In a 2022 anniversary article, the brand reported that almost 10 million units had been produced. Product Director Jérôme Micheron recalled that early customer testing was a calculated risk and that Peugeot first had to make sure customers liked the concept. That history explains why the viewing check matters: the compact wheel and raised panel are designed to work together, but the driver still has to establish the correct eye position.

No accessory or purchase is required for the normal adjustment
The ordinary procedure uses the seat controls and the steering-column release already fitted to the vehicle. Peugeot’s instructions do not call for an aftermarket display, replacement wheel, spacer, tool or special device. The official Service Box handbooks are publicly available for the cited model references, so buying a separate manual is not necessary when the correct handbook can be identified.
If the panel remains obscured after the seat and wheel are correctly positioned, first verify the exact model year, trim and market handbook. A persistent fault in the column lock, seat rails or display is a service issue, not something solved by adding an accessory or forcing a control.
Model and equipment differences
Peugeot uses the i-Cockpit name across several generations, but controls and display arrangements are not identical. The following references show why you should match the handbook to the exact vehicle rather than assume that a lever or switch is in the same place.

Even within one model name, manual seats may have separate height, tilt and slide levers, while powered seats may use switches with memory positions. Some trims offer different instrument displays or steering-wheel shapes. Country-of-sale equipment can also change which control is present. If your car lacks one of the adjustments described above, do not force the seat or column; consult its handbook for the controls it actually has.
How to tell what is blocking your view
The top of the panel is hidden by the wheel rim
Lower or raise the wheel in small increments while keeping the seat fixed. If the panel becomes visible only when the wheel is uncomfortably low or high, return to the seat-height and backrest steps and check your eye line. A wheel position that solves the display problem but leaves your arms or shoulders strained is not a good final setting.
You can see the panel only by leaning forward
Move your back fully against the backrest and reassess cushion height before changing the wheel. Leaning forward changes the intended eye point and can make the mirrors and screen appear correctly set when they are not. If the problem persists, confirm that your vehicle’s display is the layout specified for its trim and that you are following the correct model-year handbook.

The wheel moves after adjustment
Stop driving, release and reset the column control, then push it fully into the lock position. Apply only gentle hand pressure to verify that it is secure. If it still moves, do not continue using the vehicle until the steering-column locking problem has been assessed by a qualified Peugeot workshop; the ordinary seating procedure is not a repair for a defective mechanism.
A seat will not slide or lower
Check for an obstruction around the rails and under the cushion, and make sure you are operating the correct manual lever or powered switch for your trim. Do not force a jammed mechanism. The handbooks do not establish a universal fix, and a mechanical fault requires model-specific diagnosis.

The display appears different from the handbook illustration
Confirm the model, body style, model year, trim and market on the handbook cover or vehicle documentation. Peugeot can revise graphics and equipment between editions. A different screen arrangement does not by itself indicate a fault, and the reviewed instructions do not support a retrofit or accessory as a general solution.

- The vehicle is stationary while all adjustments are made, and the steering-column control is fully locked.
- Your back is supported, your legs remain slightly flexed at full pedal travel, and your arms can steer without reaching.
- The entire information area you need is visible over the wheel in your normal posture.
- No seat rail, belt, child-seat part, bag or passenger is trapped or obstructing seat movement.
- The interior and door mirrors were adjusted after the final seat and wheel positions.
- You have not assumed that a windscreen-projected head-up display is fitted merely because the handbook calls the elevated panel “head-up.”
When the handbook should take priority
Use the vehicle-specific handbook whenever its instructions differ from this general sequence. Peugeot’s public Service Box manuals are available for the 208, 308, 508 and 3008 references above, but an imported vehicle, a different market or a later edition may use different terminology and equipment. The handbook is also the appropriate source for airbag clearances, powered-seat operation, memory-seat programming and any warning message displayed during adjustment.
If ordinary seat and wheel adjustments cannot produce a readable panel, the available evidence does not establish a universal numeric setting, replacement part, retrofit display or accessory that will solve every case. First verify the exact display configuration and controls in the handbook. If the column will not lock, a seat mechanism is damaged, or the display itself is malfunctioning, stop using the affected function and seek model-specific service.
