With the motorcycle on its sidestand, in neutral and carrying no rider or luggage weight, measure between the lower edge of the chain guide and the chain center. The specified slack is 43.0–48.0 mm (1.69–1.89 in). If adjustment is needed, loosen both swingarm locknuts and the rear axle nut, turn both adjusters evenly, align the indicators, then torque the axle nut to 105 N·m (77 lb·ft) and each locknut to 16 N·m (12 lb·ft). Clean and relubricate with products approved for sealed O-ring chains every 1,000 km (600 mi), and after washing, rain or wet riding.
What the World Raid manual requires
Yamaha’s instruction is unambiguous: “The drive chain slack should be checked before each ride and adjusted if necessary.” The cited World Raid manual also warns that slack above 55.0 mm (2.16 in) can let the chain damage the frame, swingarm and other components. Treat that threshold as a stop-and-correct condition, not as a range in which it is acceptable to continue touring.

The measurements and torques below come from World Raid owner manuals identified as Yamaha Motor Thailand and Yamaha Motor Europe publications. Manuals can differ by model year or market. Reproduced earlier manuals show a 40–45 mm figure, so do not combine those values with the 43–48 mm specification. Use the manual supplied with your motorcycle and identify its model year before working on the bike.

Before you touch the adjusters
Chain adjustment is safety-critical. The manual advises consulting a Yamaha dealer and identifies work requiring special tools, data or technical skill as dealer work. A roadside adjustment is reasonable only if you can measure accurately, keep the wheel aligned and apply the specified torque. Otherwise, stop at a workshop rather than guessing.

Inspect the chain and sprockets
- Look for missing, cracked or flattened O-rings, rust, seized rollers and links that do not articulate smoothly.
- Check for hooked or sharply pointed sprocket teeth, damaged teeth, a loose front sprocket or a chain that climbs the sprocket.
- Watch for tight and loose sections as you rotate the rear wheel. A large variation is a fault, not a reason to average several readings.
- Listen for abnormal clicking, grinding or knocking and check for side plates that are bent or visibly damaged.
If you find damaged O-rings, stiff links, hooked sprocket teeth, uneven adjustment, abnormal noise or uncertainty about alignment or torque, do not set off. Have a Yamaha dealer or qualified motorcycle technician inspect the complete final drive.
Prepare a stable measuring position
- Park on firm, level ground and put the motorcycle securely on its sidestand.
- Select neutral. Remove luggage and ensure nobody is sitting on the motorcycle; the measurement is unloaded.
- Allow the chain to cool if it has just been ridden, and clean away heavy mud that could distort the measurement.
- Gather a chain-slack ruler or tape, a small soft brush, cloths, O-ring-safe chain cleaner, O-ring chain lubricant and a torque wrench that reaches 105 N·m.
How to measure chain slack correctly
The reference point is the chain guide, not the swingarm or a random point on the chain run. Push the chain down under the end of the chain guide and measure from the guide to the center of the chain. Keep the ruler square to the chain rather than angled along the swingarm.
- Choose a point under the chain guide and note the distance with the chain in its lower position.
- Push the chain upward and measure again from the same guide reference to the chain center.
- The difference between the two positions is the slack. Compare it with the range in your exact World Raid manual.
- Rotate the rear wheel in small increments and repeat the check at several points. If one section is markedly tighter or looser, stop and investigate wear, a damaged link or sprocket runout instead of adjusting to an average.
Do not measure with the rider aboard, luggage loaded or the transmission in gear. Those conditions change suspension and drivetrain position and can produce a misleading result.

1. Release the locking hardware
- Locate the chain-slack adjuster and locknut on each end of the swingarm.
- Loosen both locknuts. Leave the adjuster positions as equal as possible while the locknuts are released.
- Loosen the rear axle nut enough for the wheel to move in the swingarm slots. Do not remove the axle or disturb spacers.
Support the motorcycle only as specified by the manufacturer. A sidestand is suitable for the unloaded measurement, but do not place yourself where a shift in the bike could trap you.
2. Move the wheel evenly
- Turn the left and right chain-slack adjusting nuts by the same amount. Equal turns preserve wheel alignment and make the indicators easier to match.
- To increase slack, turn the adjusters in the loosening direction and push the rear wheel forward. Make small, identical changes rather than one large correction.
- Use the alignment marks or plates on both sides of the swingarm. The indicators must occupy the same position; matching marks are more important than counting threads by eye.
- After each change, snug the axle enough to hold the wheel, then repeat the slack measurement at multiple wheel positions.
Never use the adjusters to hide a tight spot. If the chain is within specification at one point but tight elsewhere, the uneven condition needs diagnosis.
3. Settle the wheel and recheck
- Confirm the chain falls within the specified range at the measured points and moves smoothly through the rear suspension’s unloaded position.
- Check that both alignment indicators still match and that the rear wheel is centered in the swingarm.
- Spin the wheel by hand. It should turn without binding, scraping or a sudden tight section.
4. Apply the final torques
- Torque the rear axle nut to 105 N·m (77 lb·ft).
- Torque each swingarm locknut to 16 N·m (12 lb·ft).
- Recheck both alignment indicators after tightening; tightening can move an adjuster if the locknut was not held correctly.
- Measure the slack once more and rotate the wheel through another check. If the value changed outside the manual’s range, release the hardware and correct it rather than riding.
Use a calibrated torque wrench with a range that includes the axle specification. A small adjustable wrench or a torque wrench at the end of its scale is not a substitute for a correctly ranged, functioning tool.
Cleaning and lubricating the chain on tour
Lubricant cannot compensate for abrasive grit or water trapped around the seals. Clean first, dry second and lubricate last.

Safe cleaning sequence
- Park the motorcycle securely and place absorbent cloths around the wheel and brake area to catch cleaner and fling-off.
- Apply a purpose-made drive-chain cleaner suitable for sealed O-ring chains.
- Agitate gently with a small soft brush. Work around the rollers, side plates and sprocket engagement without forcing the brush against the O-rings.
- Wipe the chain until dirt and cleaner residue are removed, then allow it to dry completely.
Yamaha specifically warns against steam cleaners, high-pressure washers, inappropriate solvents, engine oil and other lubricants that may damage O-rings. A pressure washer can drive water and grit past seals, while an aggressive solvent can swell or crack them.
Lubrication sequence
- Apply a special O-ring chain lubricant to the inside run of the chain while turning the rear wheel by hand. The inside run carries lubricant onto the rollers as the chain enters the sprocket.
- Cover the rollers and side-plate interfaces thoroughly without flooding the brake disc, pads or tire.
- Allow excess lubricant to drain or tack up, then wipe away the film that would otherwise attract dust.
- Lubricate every 1,000 km (600 mi) and whenever the chain has been exposed to washing, rain or wet ground. Dry the chain before applying fresh lubricant after a wet ride.
A practical touring maintenance schedule
| When | Action | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Before every ride | Measure slack, inspect seals and sprocket teeth, and look for a tight section or damage. | Any damaged link, abnormal noise or uneven section requires inspection before departure. |
| Every 1,000 km (600 mi) | Clean, dry and lubricate the chain. | Shorten the interval for sustained dust, mud or abrasive grit. |
| After rain, wet ground or washing | Dry and relubricate. | Do this even if the distance since the last service is small. |
| After an adjustment | Recheck alignment, torque, slack and wheel rotation. | Any change after torquing means the adjustment must be corrected. |
| Before a remote leg | Inspect the complete drive system and pack the measuring and repair tools you can use safely. | Replace questionable parts before leaving paved access to a workshop. |
What to carry on a long trip
A compact kit should let you measure, clean and make a controlled adjustment without contaminating the brakes.
- O-ring-safe drive-chain cleaner in a travel-size container.
- Small soft brush and lint-free cloths or disposable rags.
- Motorcycle O-ring chain lubricant.
- Disposable gloves and a bag for oily waste.
- Chain-slack ruler or tape measure.
- Torque wrench capable of 105 N·m, with the correct socket for the axle nut.
- Basic tools for the adjuster and locknuts, selected to fit your motorcycle.
- A spare master link or chain-repair link only if it matches the chain fitted to your motorcycle and you have verified the correct installation method before departure.
The cited manuals do not specify a replacement-link brand or part number. Compatibility must be established from the chain’s size and construction, not from packaging that merely says it is for an adventure motorcycle.

| Item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Chain cleaner | Does the manufacturer explicitly state compatibility with sealed O-ring chains? Is the container practical for your luggage and does it leave little residue? |
| Chain lubricant | Is it formulated for O-ring chains? Is aerosol or drip application easier to control? How well does it resist fling-off, dust and wet weather? |
| Torque wrench | Does its working range include 105 N·m without operating at an extreme? Is calibration current, the drive size suitable and the tool packable and weather-resistant? |
| Measuring tool | Is the scale easy to read at the chain guide and durable enough for dirt and rain? |
When a product conflicts with the motorcycle manual’s sealed-chain warning, follow the manual. Do not substitute engine oil or a general-purpose lubricant simply because it is available at a fuel stop.

Slack is suddenly much greater
Check the measurement at several wheel positions and inspect for a stretched or damaged section. If the chain has exceeded the manual’s damage-warning threshold, avoid riding it to the next town. A loose chain can strike the frame or swingarm and may derail.
One section is tight and another is loose
This pattern indicates uneven wear, a stiff link or a damaged component. Do not set the adjusters to the loosest reading; doing so can leave the tight section dangerously over-tensioned. Arrange inspection or recovery.
Alignment marks do not agree
Do not rely on the marks being “close enough.” Release the locknuts and axle tension, reset both adjusters equally and verify the indicators after final torque. Persistent disagreement can indicate a bent part or incorrect assembly and needs professional inspection.

The chain is noisy after rain or cleaning
Dry it, inspect the O-rings and rollers, and apply the specified O-ring lubricant. Grinding, repeated clicking or a link that will not flex is not normal wet-chain noise; stop and seek service.
You lack a torque wrench
Do not guess at the axle-nut torque or tighten by feel after an adjustment. Find a workshop or recovery service with a suitable calibrated wrench. The axle and locknut specifications are part of the safety procedure, not optional finishing details.
Model-year and market checks
World Raid manuals are not interchangeable simply because the motorcycle name is the same. Before a trip, record the model year and market shown in your owner’s manual and confirm its chain-slack range and torque values. The 43–48 mm specification in this guide belongs to the cited World Raid manual; earlier reproduced manuals showing 40–45 mm should not be treated as an alternate setting for a later motorcycle. If your manual differs, use its values and do not average the two ranges.

Use a Yamaha dealer or qualified technician when the manual’s special-tool or technical-skill warning applies, when the chain or sprockets are damaged, or when you cannot establish alignment and torque confidently. Dealer help is also appropriate after a derailment, an impact to the swingarm or axle, repeated adjustment changes over a short distance, or any sign that the wheel is not running true.
A correctly adjusted chain is only one part of a safe touring drivetrain. Keep the chain clean, sealed and lubricated, verify the measurement before every ride, and treat unusual wear or noise as a mechanical fault rather than a maintenance interval.
