That estimate excludes taxes, fees, local pricing differences, and any related repairs, so use it as a benchmark—not a quote for your car.
What does a serpentine belt replacement cost?
RepairPal’s U.S. estimate, updated September 3, 2026, breaks down as follows:
| Item | RepairPal estimate |
|---|---|
| Total | $154–$212 |
| Labor | $89–$130 |
| Parts | $65–$82 |
The estimate does not include taxes or fees, account for local pricing, or cover repairs that may be needed alongside the belt. For comparison, Firestone Complete Auto Care published an older average of $100–$150 including labor on May 21, 2024, and noted that cost varies by vehicle and situation. Because the figures come from different sources and dates, they are not interchangeable quotes.
Vehicle-specific estimates can also differ from the national range. RepairPal’s estimate for a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is $196–$303; both that figure and the national range are estimates updated September 3, 2026, not guaranteed local prices. See RepairPal’s estimate and vehicle options.

- Manufactured to meet or exceed strict quality requirements
Why does the price vary?
The belt and labor are only the starting point. Vehicle configuration and optional equipment can affect belt fit and access, while local labor rates and parts pricing affect the final quote. Related work, diagnostics, taxes, and shop fees can add to the total; RepairPal’s estimate excludes taxes and fees and notes that related repairs may also be needed. Its methodology also says individual certified shops may charge different labor rates and parts prices. RepairPal’s estimate methodology
Compare the proposed scope, not just the headline price. Check whether the quote covers only the belt or also a tensioner or pulleys, and whether diagnostics, taxes, and fees are included.

What does the serpentine belt do, and when should it be inspected?
The belt transfers engine power to accessories such as the alternator, power-steering pump, and air-conditioning compressor. Some vehicles also use it to drive the water pump, so the consequences of a failed belt depend on the vehicle’s design.
Firestone lists fraying, tearing, cracks, glazing, squealing or chirping, slipping, and loss of belt tension as warning signs. Noise alone does not prove the belt is the problem: tension, pulley alignment, or leaks may also be involved. Worn or stuck pulleys can damage a replacement belt, so ask for an inspection of the belt drive when symptoms appear. Firestone’s serpentine-belt guidance

Should the tensioner or pulleys be replaced too?
Not automatically. Gates recommends replacing the serpentine belt and tensioner together when servicing major components, and its complete kits can include a tensioner and pulleys. That is the parts maker’s guidance, not proof that every belt replacement requires a kit. Gates automotive belt information and Gates automotive tensioner information

Ask the shop to inspect the related components and explain any recommended additional work. Before approving it, get a written scope showing which parts are included and why they need replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you replace a serpentine belt yourself?
Many serpentine-belt jobs require only simple tools, but the procedure varies substantially by vehicle. Tight access—especially in some transverse-engine layouts—can make the work difficult, and some vehicles require a special tool to release and lock the tensioner. Look up instructions for your exact vehicle before buying a belt or starting the job.
For a DIY-versus-shop decision, weigh the procedure and required tools against the value of a professional inspection and any applicable service or warranty terms. The available estimates do not establish a universal amount you will save by doing the job yourself.
How to compare quotes or choose the correct belt
- Confirm fitment. Match the belt to the vehicle’s year, make, model, engine, and relevant equipment. Optional equipment can affect belt sizing.
- Compare the repair scope. Check whether each quote covers the belt only or also a tensioner, pulleys, or diagnostics.
- Compare the out-the-door total. Ask whether labor, parts, taxes, fees, and diagnostics are included, and account for the shop’s location.
- Request an inspection if there are symptoms. A squeal or slipping belt can have causes beyond the belt itself.
