For an eligible private buyer of a new battery-electric car in Germany, the 2026 federal grant is €3,000 to €6,000. A separate motor-vehicle tax exemption can add further value, but only for qualifying vehicles and only for a defined period. Your actual net saving is therefore: grant plus the tax you would otherwise have paid, minus your own purchase, lease, financing, registration and other charges. Germany’s official material does not establish one universal fee total or confirm whether the grant is subject to income tax, so the grant alone is not a net-savings figure.
The short answer: calculate two benefits, then subtract your own costs
The electric-car support available in 2026 has two separate components:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A purchase or lease grant: €3,000–€6,000 for an eligible battery-electric vehicle (BEV), with the amount determined by taxable household income and qualifying children under 18.
- Motor-vehicle tax relief: a fully electric vehicle first registered by 31 December 2030 may be exempt from the German motor-vehicle tax for up to ten years, but never beyond 31 December 2035.
Use this calculation for a personal estimate:
Estimated net saving = eligible grant + motor-vehicle tax avoided during your ownership period − buyer-specific costs and charges.
The tax term is not a standard amount. It depends on the vehicle, its registration date and how long you keep it. Costs also vary between buyers. Dealer charges, registration, financing, leasing, insurance, charging, delivery and other transaction expenses are not supplied as one official fee schedule. The reviewed government information also does not say whether the grant itself is taxable income. Treat that point as unresolved unless you obtain current advice from a German tax professional or an authoritative tax source.

Which vehicles and buyers qualify?
Private buyers of new M1 vehicles
The program is for private individuals acquiring a new EU category M1 passenger vehicle that is first registered in Germany. Both a purchase and a lease can qualify under the program rules. A used vehicle does not meet the stated new-vehicle condition.
Registrations from 1 January 2026 can be covered even though the digital application portal opened on 19 May 2026. The ministry’s 19 January 2026 announcement says the application must be submitted within one year after the vehicle is registered. That retroactive window is important for anyone who registered a qualifying car before the portal opened.
Income ceiling
Your taxable household income must generally be no more than €80,000 per year. The ceiling rises by €5,000 for each qualifying child, up to a maximum household-income ceiling of €90,000. The ministry describes the relevant income as the average shown by the two most recent qualifying income-tax assessments. For an early-2026 application, its example uses the 2024 and 2023 assessments.
Where the rules require it, a spouse or partner’s taxable income is included. Do not substitute salary, gross wages or take-home pay for the taxable household-income figure used by the program.
Battery-electric vehicles
A qualifying BEV receives the highest grant band. The published schedule runs from €3,000 to €6,000 and uses both the income band and the number of children under 18.
Plug-in hybrids and range-extended electric vehicles
Qualifying plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) receive less: the published range is €1,500–€4,500. For the stated eligibility period through 30 June 2027, the vehicle must either emit no more than 60 g CO₂/km or have an electric range of at least 80 km. Check the current program page and the vehicle’s official certification before assuming a particular model qualifies.
2026 grant amounts by household income and children
The following BEV schedule is the published 2026 structure from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). “Children” means qualifying children under 18 under the program rules.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
| Taxable household income | No qualifying children | One qualifying child | Two or more qualifying children |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to €45,000 | €5,000 | €5,500 | €6,000 |
| €45,001–€60,000 | €4,000 | €4,500 | €5,000 |
| €60,001–€80,000 | €3,000 | €3,500 | €4,000 |
The program’s base ceiling increases with children, so a household above €80,000 may still be eligible when the child-related increase keeps it within the permitted maximum of €90,000. The exact award should be checked against the official application calculation for your household and the assessment years accepted for your filing.
For eligible PHEVs and REEVs, BMUKN publishes a total range of €1,500–€4,500 based on the same income-and-children factors. The material reviewed does not provide a separate cell-by-cell PHEV/REEV table, so do not infer that its amounts match the BEV rows.
How to apply for the grant
- Confirm the vehicle category. Verify that the car is new, falls within EU category M1, is fully electric or meets the PHEV/REEV emissions or electric-range rule, and will be first registered in Germany.
- Check the registration date. The program covers qualifying first registrations from 1 January 2026. Keep the registration certificate and the exact first-registration date.
- Calculate your household income. Use the taxable figures from the two most recent qualifying income-tax assessments, average them as required, include a spouse or partner when the rules require it, and count qualifying children under 18.
- Collect documents. The digital process requires vehicle and registration evidence plus the income documentation specified by the ministry. Make sure names, addresses, vehicle identification details and assessment years agree across the documents.
- Submit through the digital portal. The portal opened on 19 May 2026. Apply within one year of registration; an eligible car registered early in 2026 is not excluded merely because the portal opened later.
- Save the submission record. Keep the confirmation, uploaded files and any requests for additional information until payment and any review are complete.
Funding and administrative guidance can change. The ministry describes the scheme as a €3 billion program expected to support about 800,000 vehicles during 2026–2029. That is a program-level estimate, not a promise that every applicant will receive an award or that money will remain available indefinitely.
How the motor-vehicle tax exemption changes your calculation
The motor-vehicle tax benefit is separate from the purchase grant. A fully electric vehicle first registered by 31 December 2030 may receive an exemption for up to ten years. An absolute end date of 31 December 2035 applies, so a later registration does not create a ten-year exemption beyond that date.
To value the exemption, determine the annual motor-vehicle tax that would apply to your specific car and count only the years that fall inside both limits: your ownership period and the legal exemption period. For example, a car registered in 2026 could potentially receive ten exempt years, but the exemption still cannot continue after 31 December 2035. A car registered in 2030 has a shorter calendar window before the cap takes effect.
When the exemption ends, the German Federal Government’s explanation says the tax due on electric vehicles is reduced by 50%. That reduced post-exemption charge is not part of the exempt period and should be included as a future ownership cost if you keep the car.
The Federal Ministry of Finance has projected €45 million of motor-vehicle tax relief in 2026 across all affected vehicles. This aggregate estimate cannot be converted into a per-car saving; your vehicle’s tax classification and timing control the result.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Example 1: maximum BEV grant
A household has taxable income of €42,000 and two qualifying children, so the published BEV grant is €6,000. Suppose the owner’s vehicle-specific tax calculation shows €1,050 of exemption value during the planned ownership period. If purchase, registration, financing and other applicable charges total €2,400, the arithmetic is:
€6,000 + €1,050 − €2,400 = €4,650 estimated net saving.
If the grant is later determined to be taxable income for that household, any resulting income-tax liability would reduce this figure. The official material reviewed does not resolve that treatment.
Example 2: higher-income BEV household
A household with taxable income of €67,000 and one qualifying child falls in the €60,001–€80,000 row and receives a published grant of €3,500. If its calculated tax exemption is €700 and buyer-specific charges total €1,900, the estimate is:
€3,500 + €700 − €1,900 = €2,300.
Example 3: qualifying PHEV or REEV
A qualifying PHEV or REEV receives an amount somewhere within the €1,500–€4,500 published range. Use the award shown by the official application for the household’s income and children, then add the vehicle’s own tax value if an exemption applies and subtract actual costs. Do not use the BEV table to calculate a PHEV or REEV award.

- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.

- Grant: the approved amount for the vehicle and household.
- Motor-vehicle tax avoided: annual tax that would otherwise be due, limited to the exemption period and your ownership period.
- Registration costs: registration, plates and any local administrative charges actually billed to you.
- Dealer and delivery charges: document fees, transport, preparation or mandatory options shown in the contract.
- Finance or lease charges: interest, arrangement fees, leasing administration and any end-of-term charges that are part of your transaction.
- Taxes connected with the transaction: include only taxes that legally apply to your purchase or lease and are shown in your documents.
- Other ownership costs: insurance, charging, maintenance and energy are real costs of owning an electric car, but they are not automatically subsidy fees. Include them only if your question is total cost of ownership rather than subsidy net saving.
There is no single official “fee” number for all buyers. A cash purchase in one German state, a financed purchase through a dealer and a lease with an initial payment can produce very different totals.
Common mistakes that reduce or distort the saving
Calling the grant a tax refund
The grant and motor-vehicle tax exemption are different benefits administered under different rules. A grant payment does not cancel other taxes or guarantee a particular tax bill.

Eligibility is tied to taxable household income and the accepted tax assessments, not simply the salary printed on a payslip. Include the partner’s income when required and use the correct assessment years.
Assuming every electric vehicle gets ten full years
The ten-year figure is a maximum. The vehicle must be fully electric and first registered by 31 December 2030, and every exemption ends no later than 31 December 2035.
Missing the application deadline
The application window is one year after registration. The portal’s opening date does not extend that individual deadline indefinitely.
Confusing a program estimate with an entitlement
The €3 billion budget and estimated 800,000 supported vehicles describe the overall scheme. They do not increase an individual award or guarantee that an application will be approved.

A practical worksheet for your own answer
- Record the vehicle type: BEV, PHEV or REEV.
- Record the first-registration date and planned ownership end date.
- Enter the two taxable household-income assessment figures and calculate the program’s required average.
- Count qualifying children under 18 and identify the applicable income ceiling.
- Read the grant amount from the applicable official schedule or portal decision.
- Ask for the vehicle-specific annual motor-vehicle tax that would apply without the exemption, then count eligible exempt years.
- List every actual purchase, lease, registration, financing and transaction charge from your contract and invoices.
- Subtract those charges from the grant plus the calculated tax avoided.
- Keep a separate note that the grant’s income-tax treatment has not been established by the official material cited here.
This produces a defensible estimate instead of treating the headline grant as money you automatically keep.
