Usually, a car that is already running will keep running after the key fob leaves the cabin. Many keyless vehicles continue through the rest of the drive and only prevent a restart after the engine is switched off. The important exception is an automatic idle-timeout feature: some vehicles shut down after a model-specific period while stationary in Park.
What happens when the fob leaves a running car?
On many push-button-start vehicles, the fob is checked to authorize starting, not continuously required to keep the engine running. Chevrolet service documentation describes a vehicle in normal RUN mode as one that “will not stall; the vehicle will continue to run as normal” after the fob is removed.

The vehicle may display a “key not detected” or similar warning, sound a chime, or illuminate a warning light. Those alerts do not necessarily mean the engine is about to shut off. Ford’s 2026 Expedition manual, for example, says the warning appears when the vehicle reaches 3 mph (5 km/h) for the first time after starting without a valid passive key.
How long can you drive without the fob?
There is no industry-wide time or mileage limit. If the engine is already running, many systems allow you to continue driving until you choose to stop. The car generally does not cut engine power while moving because an unexpected shutdown could remove power assistance and create a control or safety hazard.

Treat that continued operation as a one-way trip, not proof that the car can be restarted. If you stop and turn the engine off, the vehicle may refuse to start until the valid fob is brought back.
What if the car is parked and idling?
Automatic shutdown rules vary by vehicle. General Motors bulletin PIT5448J, published March 4, 2024, gives these examples for specific model-year configurations:

These are not universal GM or industry values; they apply only to the configurations covered by that bulletin. GM also warns that if the Idle Time Out feature is disabled, the vehicle will continue to run and will not automatically shut down.

What happens if you switch the engine off without the fob?
Restarting is the main problem. Ford states that a valid passive key is required to start the engine again if you turned it off while the missing-key warning was displayed. Mahindra gives the same basic instruction: the engine keeps running without the fob, but after it is switched off it cannot be restarted in the fob’s absence.
Therefore, do not turn the vehicle off merely to test what will happen. If the fob is missing while you are driving, continue only to a safe location where the fob can be retrieved or roadside assistance, a qualified automotive locksmith or a dealer can help.

Can you drive back home if the key fob is missing?
Often, yes, provided the engine is already running and the vehicle remains operable. Before moving, consider whether you can safely complete the trip without stopping. A warning may appear soon after driving begins, and the vehicle may not restart after any stop.
- Confirm that the vehicle is actually running; accessory or ignition-only modes can look similar in some cars.
- Do not switch off the engine until you are somewhere safe and have a recovery plan.
- Avoid handing the vehicle to another driver who may stop it without knowing the fob is absent.
- If fuel, traffic or an emergency requires a stop, arrange fob retrieval or professional assistance first.
What if the fob battery is dead?
A dead or weak fob battery can prevent starting even though it does not necessarily stop an engine that is already running. Ford identifies a passive-key battery with no charge as a no-crank condition.

Most vehicles provide a backup detection position—often a marked pocket, center-console area or another location specified in the owner’s manual. Place the fob there and follow the manual’s starting procedure. Replace the battery with the exact type specified for that fob; do not assume every model uses the same cell or orientation.
Why behavior differs between cars
Keyless-entry systems are not standardized. The result can change with:
- Make, model and model year
- Software and security-system configuration
- Transmission position and whether the vehicle is moving
- Market-specific equipment and regulations
- Idle-timeout settings or an enabled/disabled feature
- Whether the fob is absent, out of range or has a discharged battery
Use the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle as the controlling source. Look for sections titled “Passive Key,” “Key Not Detected,” “Extended Parking,” “Remote Start” or “Starting the Engine.”

Bottom line for a missing-fob drive
A running keyless car will commonly keep going without its fob, but there is no guaranteed duration. Driving time is often limited only by when you stop; idling in Park may trigger a manufacturer-set shutdown timer. Once the engine is off, expect the car to require the valid fob—or the manufacturer’s approved backup procedure—before it will start again.
