No. Tesla said its board did not contact executive-search firms to find Elon Musk’s replacement. Board chair Robyn Denholm called the May 1, 2025 report “absolutely false,” and Tesla’s official records continue to identify Musk as chief executive.
What Tesla denied
On May 1, 2025, a report attributed to people familiar with the discussions said Tesla’s board had contacted recruitment firms about starting a CEO search. The account was linked to concerns about Tesla’s sales and profits and Musk’s time working with the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Tesla disputed that account. Its statement said: “Earlier today, there was a media report erroneously claiming that the Tesla Board had contacted recruitment firms to initiate a CEO search at the company.” Denholm added: “This is absolutely false (and this was communicated to the media before the report was published).”
What Tesla’s board said about Musk
Denholm’s statement did more than deny contact with search firms. It said: “The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk and the Board is highly confident in his ability to continue executing on the exciting growth plan ahead.” That is the company’s stated position on Musk’s status and the board’s confidence in his leadership.

Is Elon Musk still Tesla’s CEO?
Yes. Tesla’s corporate-governance materials list Musk as the company’s leader and Denholm as board chair. Tesla’s 2026 filing says Musk has served as chief executive since October 2008 and as a board member since April 2004.
| Record | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Tesla statement on May 1, 2025 | The board denied contacting recruitment firms to initiate a CEO search. |
| Tesla corporate-governance page | Musk is listed in company leadership; Denholm is listed as board chair. |
| Tesla 2026 SEC filing | Musk is identified as CEO, a position he has held since October 2008. |
Succession planning is not the same as a replacement search
Later Tesla special-committee materials said the board considered Musk the right CEO for Tesla’s next phase of transformative growth. Those materials also said that Tranches 11 and 12 of the 2025 CEO Performance Award require a succession-planning framework to be developed with Musk and approved by disinterested directors.

A succession framework is a governance process for preparing for eventual leadership continuity. It can address what happens if a chief executive leaves, becomes unavailable or reaches the end of a tenure. It does not, by itself, show that a board has hired headhunters or begun an immediate search for a replacement.

The public record contains two different accounts:
- Tesla’s account: the claim that the board contacted recruitment firms was “absolutely false.”
- The reported account: people familiar with discussions were cited as saying that contacts with executive-search firms occurred.
The available official materials confirm Musk’s continuing role and a later requirement to develop succession planning. They do not establish that the denied recruitment-firm search took place.

Bottom line on Tesla and Musk
Tesla did not acknowledge trying to replace Elon Musk as CEO. The board publicly denied contacting search firms, said Musk remained CEO and expressed confidence in him. Tesla’s later succession-planning requirement is a longer-term governance measure, not proof of an active effort to remove or replace him.
