Short answer: A current U.S.-market Honda Pilot with all-wheel drive uses Honda’s i-VTM4 AWD system. Honda describes it as an electronically managed system that can vary torque between the rear wheels independently. It can help the Pilot keep moving when traction is uneven and can contribute to cornering behavior on dry pavement, but it cannot create grip that the tires and surface do not provide.
“4WD” usually refers to a different design, but the label alone is not enough to identify the hardware. Some older Pilots used Honda’s VTM-4 system and offered a driver-operated VTM-4 Lock. That historical system and its lock instructions should not be treated as the specification for a current i-VTM4 Pilot. Model year, trim, market and tire fitment determine what your vehicle actually has.

The answer depends on the Pilot’s model year and trim
Honda’s current U.S. materials call the available Pilot system i-VTM4 AWD. All-wheel drive is not necessarily standard on every trim, so check the window sticker, vehicle identification information and the specifications for your exact model. A front-wheel-drive Pilot and an i-VTM4 Pilot do not have the same traction hardware or drive-mode equipment.
Older documentation uses different language. The 2010 Pilot owner’s manual calls its system “variable torque management 4WD (VTM-4)” and describes a VTM-4 Lock button. That is a model-specific description of an older system. Official materials reviewed do not establish one universal cutoff year that applies to every market and trim, so a used Pilot should be identified by its year and equipment before anyone calls it AWD or 4WD.

Manufacturers use AWD and 4WD as labels for several different mechanical and electronic arrangements. Do not infer that a badge guarantees a low-range gearbox, a permanent lock, or a particular torque split. For a current Pilot, Honda’s own name—i-VTM4 AWD—is the most accurate starting point.
How current i-VTM4 AWD works
Independent torque control at the rear axle
Honda describes i-VTM4 as using clutch packs that can vary torque to the rear wheels independently. When one side has less grip, the system can send a different amount of drive torque to each rear wheel rather than treating the rear axle as one inseparable unit. In a turn, Honda also describes the ability to send torque to the outside rear wheel, which can support the vehicle’s cornering behavior on dry roads.
This is an automatic, electronically managed response. The driver does not select a conventional low-range gear or manually lock the rear axle in the way some older off-road vehicles do. The control system works with the powertrain and stability controls to respond to available traction and the selected drive mode.

AWD only helps the tires use the grip that is available. It does not increase the friction of ice, shorten braking distance by itself, or guarantee that the Pilot will turn when the road is polished snow or frozen slush. Steering, braking and acceleration still have physical limits. If all four tires are on a surface with very little grip, distributing torque cannot manufacture traction.
Honda’s 2023 Pilot owner’s manual makes the same practical point: even with the system engaged, the driver needs the same care with acceleration, steering and braking as when driving a two-wheel-drive vehicle. The drivetrain can help you get moving; it does not replace smooth inputs or a safe speed.

AWD and 4WD: the useful distinction for Pilot owners
| Question | Current i-VTM4 AWD Pilot | Older VTM-4 Pilot example |
|---|---|---|
| Honda’s terminology | i-VTM4 AWD in current U.S. materials | Variable torque management 4WD (VTM-4) in the 2010 owner’s manual |
| Rear-wheel torque | Clutch packs can vary torque to each rear wheel independently | Older VTM-4 hardware and controls; equipment varies by year and trim |
| Driver-operated lock | Current materials reviewed do not establish a VTM-4 Lock control | 2010 documentation describes a VTM-4 Lock button for low-traction situations |
| Dry-pavement lock warning | Do not apply older lock instructions to a current i-VTM4 model | Honda warned not to use VTM-4 Lock on dry, paved roads while turning |
| Low-range gearing | Not established in the current Pilot materials reviewed | Not established by the cited 2010 VTM-4 description |
| Best identification method | Check model year, trim specifications and the owner’s manual | Check the year-specific manual and the controls actually fitted to the vehicle |
The table is a terminology guide, not a promise that every Pilot within a model-year range has identical hardware. If you are buying a used vehicle, verify the trim and inspect the center-console controls rather than relying on an online listing or a badge.
Snow: AWD helps you start, tires determine much of the rest
What Snow mode changes
On equipped Pilots, Snow mode changes powertrain behavior to maximize controllability on snowy roads. The intent is to make throttle response and the vehicle’s control systems easier to manage when the surface is slippery. Selecting the mode does not add a new source of traction; it changes how the existing powertrain and stability-control systems respond.
Honda’s 2026 Pilot owner’s manual is explicit: SNOW mode does not allow you to drive on snowy or frozen roads in all situations. There are limits to SNOW mode.
The warning matters most on glare ice, steep grades, deep ruts and roads where visibility or stopping room is poor.
Why winter tires still matter
AWD can apply engine torque through more than two driven wheels, but the tires remain the contact points with the road. Winter tires use compounds and tread designs intended to stay more flexible in low temperatures. They can improve acceleration, steering response and braking consistency compared with worn or unsuitable all-season tires, although no tire makes an icy road risk-free.
Honda advises suitable winter tires or tire chains for snowy and frozen conditions, along with lower speeds and increased following distance. Use the exact tire size, load rating and chain restrictions for your model year and wheel package. A chain that clears one Pilot’s suspension may not be approved for another trim with a different tire size.

A practical snow-driving sequence
- Check the vehicle first. Confirm that all four tires are the same approved size and type, have adequate tread and are inflated to the pressure shown on the vehicle’s label or in the owner’s manual.
- Choose the appropriate mode. Select Snow mode when the road is covered with snow or the surface is consistently slippery. Do not expect it to compensate for excessive speed.
- Accelerate gently. Apply the throttle progressively. If the tires spin, ease off rather than adding more power.
- Leave more room. Increase the gap to the vehicle ahead and begin braking earlier. AWD does not eliminate the need for longer stopping distances on low-grip surfaces.
- Steer smoothly. Abrupt steering, braking and throttle changes can exceed the available grip even when all four wheels are driven.
- Use approved equipment only. If chains are required, follow the year-specific installation and speed instructions. Never assume that a generic chain is permissible.
Mud, gravel and loose dirt: use Trail mode within the Pilot’s limits
What Trail mode is designed to do
On models equipped with it, Trail mode is intended for roads and paths covered with mud, gravel or loose dirt. Honda’s technical description says the muddy-condition calibration can delay upshifts to preserve wheel torque and adjust stability control to allow more wheel slip. Those changes can help the vehicle maintain momentum on a loose surface where a very early upshift or immediate intervention could stop progress.

Trail mode is therefore a traction-management setting, not a transformation into a dedicated off-road vehicle. It does not add a transfer case, increase the Pilot’s ground clearance beyond its design, or guarantee that the vehicle can cross a deep rut, rock step or water crossing.
Honda’s off-road boundary
The 2026 owner’s manual says: Your vehicle has been designed primarily for use on pavement; however, its higher ground clearance allows you to occasionally travel on unpaved roads. It is not designed for trail-blazing, or other challenging off-highway activities.
Treat that as an operating limit. A maintained gravel road and a muddy access road are within a different risk category from a difficult trail with deep holes, large rocks or steep side slopes.
How to use Trail mode without abusing the system
- Walk an unfamiliar section first when it is safe to do so. Look for depth, hidden rocks, soft shoulders and a route that leaves room to turn around.
- Keep momentum steady rather than attacking an obstacle with high throttle. Wheelspin can dig holes and reduce the traction available to the next tire rotation.
- Use the least aggressive line that keeps the vehicle level. A cross-axle rut can unload a wheel and make any drivetrain appear less capable.
- Monitor temperature, warning messages and changes in vehicle behavior. Stop if the system reports a fault.
- Do not hold the throttle against a stationary, spinning wheel. Honda warns that excessive wheelspin can damage the i-VTM4 AWD system.
For mud, the correct tire and adequate sidewall protection can matter as much as the mode. Check the owner’s manual before changing tire size or pressure, because off-pavement experimentation can affect clearance, handling and the calibration of the vehicle’s control systems.
Dry roads: why i-VTM4 can affect handling
AWD is not only a low-traction feature. Honda says i-VTM4 can contribute to dry-weather handling because its rear clutch packs can vary torque from side to side. Sending torque to the outside rear wheel in a turn can influence how the Pilot rotates and how it feels through a corner.

This does not mean the Pilot becomes a sports car or that AWD makes cornering at excessive speed safe. Tire grip, suspension loading, road camber, steering input and speed remain decisive. The useful takeaway is narrower: the current system can manage torque proactively on a dry surface, rather than waiting only for obvious wheelspin.
The old VTM-4 Lock warning is different
The 2010 Pilot manual warns, Do not use the VTM-4 LOCK button on dry, paved roads.
Honda explained that turning with the older lock engaged could damage the rear differential. That warning belongs to the historical VTM-4 Lock system. It is not a general instruction to press or avoid a control that current i-VTM4 Pilots may not have.
If a used Pilot has a VTM-4 Lock button, follow that vehicle’s own manual. If it has current i-VTM4 AWD controls and no such button, do not retrofit an older procedure or assume that a mode with a similar name exists.
Which Pilot drivetrain is better for each surface?
| Driving situation | What i-VTM4 AWD can contribute | What the driver still must provide |
|---|---|---|
| Light snow on a plowed road | More opportunities to deliver drive torque when front-wheel traction varies; Snow mode can alter powertrain behavior | Appropriate tires, gentle inputs, reduced speed and extra following distance |
| Ice or frozen pavement | Limited help with getting underway if a tire has some usable grip | Very conservative speed and braking; AWD cannot guarantee turning or stopping traction |
| Deep or rutted snow | Torque management may help maintain movement | Clearance, tire capability, route choice and recovery planning; avoid assuming the vehicle can pass every drift |
| Mud, gravel or loose dirt | Trail mode can adjust shifting and stability-control behavior on equipped models | Steady momentum, avoidance of excessive wheelspin and respect for the Pilot’s pavement-oriented design |
| Dry pavement and ordinary corners | Independent rear torque control can influence cornering behavior | Normal speed discipline; AWD does not override tire and road limits |
| Challenging off-highway trails | No current material establishes the Pilot as a dedicated trail vehicle | Choose a vehicle designed for that use rather than exceeding Honda’s stated limits |
How to identify the drivetrain on a specific Pilot
- Record the model year and market. A U.S. Pilot may not match a Pilot sold in another country.
- Identify the trim. Honda’s trim specifications show that AWD availability varies. Do not infer equipment from the model name alone.
- Read the owner’s manual for that year. Search for “i-VTM4,” “VTM-4,” “Snow,” “Trail” and “VTM-4 Lock.” The manual’s terminology is more reliable than a seller’s shorthand.
- Inspect the controls. A VTM-4 Lock button is a clue that the vehicle uses the older system described in its manual. Its presence or absence does not, by itself, prove every other drivetrain detail.
- Verify the tires and wheels. Record the complete tire marking and compare it with the approved specifications. Chains and replacement tires must clear the suspension and meet the vehicle’s requirements.
- Check for warning messages. An AWD-system warning, unusual noise or repeated wheelspin deserves diagnosis before the Pilot is used in snow or mud.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
“AWD means I can stop normally in snow.”
Correction: AWD mainly changes how drive torque is delivered. Braking depends on tire-road friction, speed, brake input and available stopping distance. Slow down and leave more room even when all four wheels are driven.

“Trail mode makes the Pilot a rock-crawling 4×4.”
Correction: Trail mode is calibrated for mud, gravel and loose dirt. Honda describes the Pilot as primarily pavement-oriented and not designed for trail-blazing or challenging off-highway activity.
“The VTM-4 Lock button is a stronger version of current AWD.”
Correction: It is an older, model-specific feature. Honda warned against using it on dry paved roads while turning. Apply that instruction only to the vehicle for which it was written.
“Any tire chain or larger tire will work.”
Correction: Chain clearance and tire fitment vary by year, trim and wheel size. Follow the exact manual and tire specifications; do not transfer a size or installation rule from another Pilot.
What the official material does—and does not—prove
Honda’s product descriptions and owner manuals explain system operation, drive modes and safety limits. They do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of Pilot AWD and 4WD stopping distances, snow lap times, mud depth or dry-road cornering performance. No comparative statistic should be presented as if Honda’s specifications were a laboratory test.
The most defensible conclusions are therefore operational: current U.S. Pilots use i-VTM4 AWD when equipped; i-VTM4 can vary rear torque side to side; Snow and Trail modes change vehicle control behavior for their intended surfaces; suitable tires and cautious driving remain essential; and older VTM-4 Lock guidance is not a description of current models.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Confirm the Pilot’s year, trim and drivetrain from the vehicle documentation.
- Read the drive-mode descriptions in the exact owner’s manual.
- Inspect tread, sidewalls, inflation and matching tire sizes.
- For winter travel, carry only chains approved for that tire size and vehicle.
- Clear snow from lamps, windows, mirrors, roof and sensors before moving.
- Plan extra time and following distance; do not use AWD as a reason to drive faster.
- On loose surfaces, select the appropriate mode before the difficult section and avoid prolonged wheelspin.
- Stop and investigate any AWD, transmission or stability-control warning.
Bottom line for a Pilot shopper or owner
Call a current U.S. Pilot’s available system i-VTM4 AWD, not generic 4WD, unless the vehicle’s own documentation identifies an older VTM-4 system. i-VTM4 can distribute rear torque independently, help the Pilot maintain forward motion when traction differs from wheel to wheel and influence dry-road cornering. Snow mode and Trail mode refine that control for specific surfaces, but neither mode defeats the limits of tires, braking, steering, clearance or road conditions.
If you are evaluating a used Pilot, the model year and trim are the deciding facts. An older Pilot with VTM-4 Lock has different controls and a specific dry-pavement warning. For any year, choose tires and chains by the exact factory fitment, drive within Honda’s stated pavement and unpaved-road limits, and treat AWD as assistance—not a substitute for traction, judgment or space.
