Harrison Ford’s Jeep commercial is less a traditional vehicle advertisement than a short meditation on choice, responsibility and the freedom to decide what makes life satisfying. Titled “Owner’s Manual,” the two-minute film premiered during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, with Ford behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler 4xe.
Directed by James Mangold, who also directed Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the spot puts the actor’s familiar, understated delivery ahead of the usual Super Bowl advertising formula. There are no exaggerated stunts or crowded celebrity cameos. Instead, Ford speaks directly about writing one’s own story—and ends with a joke that only a Ford driving a Jeep could deliver.

A Jeep commercial built around personal choice
“Owner’s Manual” begins with an idea that applies to more than driving: life does not come with a definitive instruction book. People have to make their own decisions, accept the consequences and determine what happiness means for them.
That theme gives the commercial its unusual tone. Rather than presenting the Wrangler 4xe solely as an off-road machine or a lifestyle accessory, Jeep uses the vehicle as part of a broader argument about self-determination. Ford’s monologue suggests that freedom is not simply the ability to go somewhere. It is also the ability to choose a direction in the first place.

Jeep described the film as an “owner manifesto,” while Ford characterized the finished piece as “a rumination on life.” Those descriptions explain why the commercial feels more reflective than sales-driven. The vehicle remains central, but the pitch is deliberately soft: the Wrangler represents a way of moving through the world rather than a list of specifications.
Why Harrison Ford initially said no
Ford told People that he initially declined the project. He became more receptive after the concept was refined and the creative became more personal. Mangold’s involvement also helped. The director already had a working relationship with Ford, which allowed the commercial to be shaped around the actor’s presence instead of forcing him into a conventional advertising character.
That distinction matters. Ford is not playing Indiana Jones or delivering a heavily scripted comedy routine. His performance is restrained and conversational, relying on the authority of his voice and the familiarity audiences bring to him. The ad’s central message works because it sounds like an observation from a person reflecting on experience, not a slogan assembled around a product launch.

The Wrangler 4xe, Wiley and the Jeep wave
The vehicle featured in the film is a Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Ford is shown driving with a dog named Wiley, reinforcing the commercial’s emphasis on companionship and open-ended travel rather than a specific destination. The scenes use the Wrangler as a natural part of the journey, not as a prop detached from the story.
The commercial also references the Jeep wave—the two-finger greeting commonly associated with Wrangler owners. That small detail gives the ad a direct connection to Jeep culture. The Wrangler is not presented only as a vehicle someone purchases; it is shown as an entry point into a community with its own habits and language.

The 4xe badge is significant as well. The Wrangler 4xe is Jeep’s plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler, combining electric driving capability with the model’s recognizable four-wheel-drive identity. The commercial does not turn the film into a technical explanation of the powertrain, but placing the 4xe at the center connects Jeep’s heritage with a more modern version of the Wrangler.
The joke in the final line
Ford’s closing reference is intentionally self-aware. He says the Wrangler 4xe makes him happy “even though my name is Ford.” The line works on two levels: it is a personal joke about his surname and a nod to Ford Motor Company, Jeep’s rival in the American automotive market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBecause the rest of the film is measured and thoughtful, the punchline provides a needed release without undermining the message. Ford is not pretending the brand rivalry does not exist. He is using it to make the endorsement feel less manufactured. A celebrity named Ford choosing to appear in a Jeep is an obvious fact, so the commercial addresses it directly.
James Mangold’s role in the film
Mangold directed the commercial after working with Ford on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. His involvement helped give the project a cinematic scale, but the film remains intentionally simple. The visual approach supports Ford’s narration instead of competing with it.
Production was handled by Minted Content in collaboration with Stellantis. The project also involved Stellantis Global Chief Marketing Officer Olivier François, who has overseen several of the automaker’s major brand campaigns. Original music titled “Go Anywhere” was written and performed for the film by Sony Music Publishing artist Nathaniel Murphy.

- GREAT FOR KIDS AND COLLECTORS: Ideal for imaginative play and display, this toy car is a fun addition to any Hot Wheels collection.
The music and landscapes add movement to the piece, but the commercial’s structure remains driven by the spoken message. That is a notable choice for a two-minute Super Bowl spot, where advertisers often compress a joke, product reveal and emotional payoff into 30 seconds. Jeep allowed the idea to unfold at a slower pace.

What “Owner’s Manual” means
The title is a metaphor, not a reference to the Wrangler’s actual operating instructions. Jeep is borrowing the language of vehicle ownership to describe the way people approach life. A real owner’s manual explains how to operate and maintain a vehicle; this commercial argues that people do not receive an equivalent guide for their own lives.
Ford’s answer is that individuals have to create their own rules and decide which experiences matter. In that reading, the Wrangler becomes a symbol of agency: it can take its occupants beyond the most predictable route, but the important choice is still made by the person behind the wheel.
For Jeep, the approach extends the brand’s long-running association with freedom without repeating a simple “go anywhere” promise. The campaign asks a more personal question: if there is no fixed manual for life, what will you choose to do with the freedom you have?
