Google Maps can now let Android Auto users report crashes, traffic, speed cameras, construction and other road hazards directly from the car’s display. Google announced the rollout on July 31, 2024, across Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, cars with Google built-in and other Maps platforms. However, the Report button is not guaranteed to appear on every vehicle display, account or software configuration.
What changed in Google Maps on Android Auto?
Google Maps previously allowed incident reporting from phones and some other in-car platforms. The important change for Android Auto users is that the reporting control can now appear in the vehicle’s infotainment interface, so drivers do not have to pick up their phones to submit a map report.

This is a Google Maps feature rendered through Android Auto, not a separate Android Auto reporting app. Google’s announcement described the rollout as global, but actual availability and incident categories can vary by country, language, software version and vehicle display.
Google says reports are anonymous in the sense that trip reports are not associated with the user’s Google account. Reports may appear on the map while other drivers are traveling, but they are crowdsourced information—not guaranteed, instant or authoritative confirmation of road conditions.

What road hazards can you report?
Google’s current Android Auto help documentation lists these incident types:
- Crash
- Slowdown or traffic jam
- Mobile speed camera
- Police
- Construction
- Lane closure
- Object on road
- Flooded road
- Low visibility
The menu shown on your display may not include every category. Speed-camera and police-related reporting can also be affected by local laws, policies and regional availability.
These reports are intended for relevant traffic incidents and road conditions. They are not a way to submit general map corrections, report a complaint or contact emergency services. If there is an immediate danger or emergency, use the appropriate emergency service rather than relying on a crowdsourced Maps report.
How to report a hazard while navigating
- Connect your Android phone to the car and open Google Maps on the vehicle display.
- Start a route by tapping Start.
- Tap Report.
- Under Add a report, select the incident type.
The exact position and presentation of the control can vary with the screen layout. Do not continue interacting with the display if traffic conditions make it unsafe. A passenger can submit the report instead.
How to report without an active route
You may also be able to report an incident before starting navigation:
- Open Google Maps on the car’s infotainment screen.
- Tap Report.
- Choose the relevant incident type.
Google’s instructions describe the feature as available through the car display, but not every compatible Android Auto installation necessarily supports creating reports.

When Google Maps approaches a reported incident, it may ask whether the problem is still present. Tap Yes if the hazard remains or No if it has cleared.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
This feedback helps Google update crowdsourced incident data. A report can disappear or change as other drivers confirm that conditions have improved, so seeing a report on the map does not mean it will remain there for the entire trip.
Why is the Report button missing?
The most important explanation is display compatibility. Google explicitly warns that not all car displays are compatible with the traffic-incident reporting feature. Some displays may still allow you to vote on existing reports even when they do not let you create a new one.
Other possible causes include:
- You are not signed in to a Google account.
- Google Maps, Android Auto or Google Play services is out of date.
- The feature has not reached your particular software or account configuration.
- Your vehicle’s screen layout does not expose the control.
- The phone and vehicle combination behaves differently from another Android Auto setup.
A Google Android Auto community representative later said that support had expanded to small vehicle displays for logged-in users as of December 1, 2025. That statement should not be read as a guarantee that every current hardware and software combination works flawlessly: Google’s main help page still carries a compatibility warning, and users continue to report inconsistent behavior.

- Check account sign-in. Google says you must be signed in to a Google account to use traffic-incident reporting.
- Update the software. Update Android Auto, Google Maps and Google Play services through the appropriate app settings or app store.
- Reconnect Android Auto. Disconnect the phone, close the connection and pair or plug it in again.
- Restart both systems. Restart the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Check both states. Look for Report while navigation is active and when no route is running.
- Compare hardware. If possible, test another compatible Android phone. If the button disappears only with one phone, the issue may follow the phone, account or software configuration; if it disappears with every phone, the display is a stronger suspect.
- Check vehicle compatibility. Consult the car manufacturer’s Android Auto information and Google’s current support documentation.
Screen size and Android Auto layout behavior have been suggested in secondary testing and user discussions as possible reasons for a hidden control. However, Google does not document changing Android Auto’s DPI as a universal fix. Unofficial DPI changes or third-party modifications can create layout, stability and compatibility problems, and should not be attempted while driving.
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping Android Auto and Google Play services updated when investigating connection and app problems.
Is Google Maps’ reporting feature available everywhere?
Google described the 2024 rollout as global across supported Maps platforms. That does not mean every country receives the same menu or that every vehicle display supports the feature.
Regional rules and data policies may affect categories such as mobile speed cameras and police. Google’s help documentation does not provide a complete country-by-country availability matrix, so the most reliable test is whether the signed-in Google Maps app on your specific Android Auto display shows Report.

Google Maps versus Waze for hazard reporting
Google Maps is the better fit if you already use it for business searches, saved places, destinations, walking directions or other travel modes. Its incident reporting is now part of the navigation workflow many Android Auto users already know.

- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
Waze may be better if real-time crowdsourced driving information is your main priority. Waze is more focused on traffic, hazards and incident-aware routing, and many drivers prefer its more prominent driving-oriented reporting experience.
Google owns both services, and Google says Maps can display incident information from Maps and Waze communities. That does not make the apps identical: a Google Maps user should not assume that every Waze reporting tool or interface is available in Maps.
For example, natural-language “Conversational Reporting” has been associated with Waze testing and should not be treated as part of the Google Maps Android Auto rollout.

Safety: easier than using a phone, but not risk-free
Putting the control on the dashboard can reduce the temptation to handle a phone, but it does not eliminate driver distraction. Google advises drivers to report incidents only when it is safe and to continue paying attention to road and traffic conditions.
- Use the display only when traffic conditions permit.
- Let a passenger submit the report whenever possible.
- Use voice controls only if they are supported and reliable in your setup.
- Never pick up a phone to compensate for a missing Android Auto button.
- Do not treat a Maps report as verified information from police or a road agency.
If the control is missing, wait until you are parked before using the phone version of Google Maps. Handheld-phone laws vary, but manipulating a phone while driving is unsafe regardless of local enforcement.
Do you need new hardware?
No. The feature itself is a software function and buying a wireless Android Auto adapter is not a verified way to make a missing Report button appear. An adapter may improve convenience in a car that supports wired Android Auto, but it can also reproduce the same display or account limitation.
An aftermarket Android Auto head unit may make sense for an older vehicle that lacks Android Auto entirely, but it is excessive when the existing system already supports Android Auto and the problem is account, software or display compatibility. Verify compatibility with the phone, vehicle, steering-wheel controls and backup-camera integration before replacing a stereo.
