Honda Confirmed a Keyless-Entry Flaw That Could Unlock Some Cars—But Not Simply Drive Them Away

Honda acknowledged that a sophisticated attack could mimic keyless-entry commands on certain vehicles. Rolling-PWN could enable unauthorized unlocking, but the evidence did not show that every Honda could be remotely stolen.

Yes—the July 2022 report was real, but its headline was easy to overread. Researchers found a weakness in Honda’s rolling-code keyless-entry system, known as Rolling-PWN, that could allow unauthorized unlocking of certain tested vehicles. Honda acknowledged that sophisticated equipment and technical expertise could mimic remote-keyless commands, while also saying the attack could not drive the vehicle away without the legitimate key fob.

The evidence did not show that every Honda could be remotely stolen. It showed a serious access and keyless-control flaw affecting specific tested vehicles, with researchers arguing that the underlying design may have been used more widely.

What Honda admitted

The report came from a SecurityWeek article published July 13, 2022, covering research by Kevin2600 and Wesley Li of Star-V Lab. The researchers called the vulnerability Rolling-PWN and associated it with CVE-2021-46145.

The researchers said an attacker could manipulate the synchronization process used by Honda’s key fobs and reuse previously captured commands. Honda later acknowledged that an attacker with “sophisticated tools and technical know-how” could mimic remote-keyless commands and gain access to certain vehicles.

Honda’s important qualification was that the attack required close-proximity capture of multiple sequential radio transmissions. It was not simply a matter of replaying one button press from a long distance. Honda also said the vehicle still required the physical key fob inside the car for it to be driven away.

How a rolling-code key fob is supposed to work

A key fob sends a radio command when its owner presses a button. Older or poorly designed systems may use a fixed code, meaning an attacker who records that transmission could replay it later. Modern remote-entry systems generally use changing codes, often called rolling codes, so that each valid command is different.

The fob and vehicle maintain a synchronization counter. Because drivers sometimes press the fob while out of range, the vehicle normally accepts a limited window of future codes rather than requiring perfect one-to-one synchronization.

According to the Rolling-PWN researchers, Honda’s implementation could be manipulated during that synchronization process. Under the described conditions, older captured commands could become usable again, defeating the protection that rolling codes are intended to provide.

Cutting NOT Required - Key Fob Keyless Entry Remote Shell Case & Pad fits Honda 2003-2012 Accord / 2006-2013 Civic EX / 2009-2015 Pilot /2005-2006 CR-V
  • HONDA KEY FOB SHELL REPLACEMENT: Replacement key fob shell case for select Honda vehicles, including 2003-2014 Accord, 2006-2013 Civic EX, 2009-2015 Pilot, and 2005-2006 CR-V. Please compare your original remote shape and button layout with the product images before ordering.
  • SHELL ONLY (NO ELECTRONICS / NO CHIP INCLUDED): This is a replacement key fob shell only — no circuit board, battery, or electronics included. Move your original internals into this car key cover.
  • NO CUTTING REQUIRED: Easy DIY installation. Move your existing key blade and internal components from your original remote into the new shell. No cutting or locksmith required.
  • GREAT FOR WORN or BROKEN KEY FOBS: Perfect for replacing a cracked, damaged, or worn Honda key fob case while keeping your original working internals. A simple solution to refresh your remote’s appearance and usability.
  • TRANSPONDER CHIP REQUIRED TO START CAR: If your original key fob has a transponder chip, you must transfer it (some users secure it with a small amount of glue). Without the chip, the vehicle may not start.

This is a conceptual explanation, not a practical exploit guide. Carrying out the attack required specialized equipment, technical knowledge, and repeated close-range signal capture.

Which Honda vehicles were tested?

The researchers reported successful testing on the following vehicles:

Model year Model Evidence and limitations
2012 Honda Civic Tested; this is the vehicle specifically identified in the formal CVE record.
2018 Honda X-RV Tested; market-specific equipment may differ from U.S. versions.
2020 Honda CR-V Tested.
2020 Honda Accord Tested.
2020 Honda Odyssey Tested.
2021 Honda Inspire Tested; this name is associated with markets outside the United States.
2021 Honda Accord Independently verified by The Drive’s Rob Stumpf, according to the research page.
2022 Honda Fit Tested.
2022 Honda Civic Tested.
2022 Honda VE-1 Tested; market-specific equipment may differ.
2022 Honda Breeze Tested; market-specific equipment may differ.

Testing a vehicle does not establish that every trim, production unit, software revision, or market version has the same vulnerability. Names such as X-RV, Inspire, VE-1, and Breeze also reflect markets outside the United States, so American owners should not assume that an identically named or similarly dated vehicle uses identical hardware.

Does the flaw affect every Honda?

No such universal conclusion was established. The researchers believed the same or similar rolling-code design could affect Honda vehicles sold from approximately 2012 through 2022. That was an extrapolation from testing, not a demonstrated result for every Honda model, trim, market, and software revision.

The NIST National Vulnerability Database entry is narrower. It formally describes a replay attack involving a non-expiring rolling code and counter resynchronization in the key-fob subsystem of a 2012 Honda Civic. NVD lists the vulnerability with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.3, rated Medium, and characterizes the attack as requiring proximity and high complexity.

For an individual vehicle, the relevant questions are its exact model, model year, market, keyless-entry hardware, and software history—not simply whether it is a Honda from a particular decade.

Unlocking, starting, and driving away are different claims

Claim What the evidence supports Qualification
Unlock the doors Researchers demonstrated the method on tested vehicles, and Honda acknowledged that remote-keyless commands could be mimicked on certain vehicles. The attacker needed specialized equipment, expertise, and close-proximity capture of multiple transmissions.
Start the engine The researchers described starting capability in some circumstances, and related Honda keyless flaws have been associated with start functions. This should be tied to the specific vehicle and vulnerability, not generalized to every Honda.
Drive the vehicle away Honda said the described Rolling-PWN attack could not do this by itself. The legitimate key fob was still required inside the vehicle for operation.

An unauthorized unlock could still matter even if theft were not possible. It could expose belongings, allow tampering, or provide access to the cabin. But “hackers can remotely steal every Honda” is not an accurate summary of the evidence.

Rolling-PWN was not the same as every Honda keyless flaw

Rolling-PWN involved manipulation of a rolling-code synchronization mechanism. That is different from a conventional fixed-code replay attack, in which an attacker records one unchanging radio transmission and replays it later.

A separate issue, CVE-2022-27254, concerned replaying an unencrypted RF signal in a Honda Civic keyless system. NVD describes that vulnerability as affecting locking, unlocking, and starting functions in the relevant system. It should not be merged with CVE-2021-46145: both involve Honda keyless systems, but they describe different weaknesses.

What Honda said about fixes

Contemporary reporting said Honda regularly improved security features in newer models but had no plan at that time to update older vehicles. The Rolling-PWN researchers said remediation would generally require an update to the vehicle’s body-control-module firmware, delivered over the air where supported or through dealer service.

Those were positions reported in 2022. The available evidence does not establish a universal 2026 recall, over-the-air patch, or dealer remedy for every vehicle associated with CVE-2021-46145. Software status can also vary by model, market, trim, and service history.

What Honda owners should do now

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record the VIN, model year, trim, market of sale, and whether it has keyless entry or push-button start.
  2. Contact Honda or an authorized dealer. Ask whether any keyless-entry, body-control-module, or security-related software update applies to that VIN.
  3. Check official databases. Use Honda’s official owner and service resources and the relevant government recall database rather than relying on generalized internet lists.
  4. Use ordinary physical security. Secure parking and a visible steering-wheel lock can add protection against theft, regardless of the electronic vulnerability question.
  5. Do not assume a new fob solves a vehicle-side flaw. Replacing the fob battery, changing the fob, or placing it in a metal box does not repair a weakness in the vehicle receiver or rolling-code synchronization logic.
  6. Do not test the exploit without authorization. Attempting to capture or replay vehicle signals can be unlawful and can interfere with someone else’s vehicle.

A Faraday pouch may help reduce some ordinary proximity-based key-fob risks, but it is not a fix for a vulnerability in the car’s own receiver and synchronization process.

How serious was Rolling-PWN?

It was technically significant because it undermined a security mechanism specifically designed to prevent replay attacks. The formal NVD rating reflects a high-complexity, proximity-dependent attack—not a simple remote theft technique available to anyone with a phone or radio transmitter.

Risk also depends on whether an attacker can remain close enough to capture the necessary sequence, whether the particular vehicle uses the affected implementation, and whether its software has been updated. The researchers said the attack might leave little traditional evidence, but that is a researcher claim and should not be treated as a universal forensic rule.

The most accurate reading is therefore narrower than the headline: unauthorized access was credible and acknowledged for certain vehicles, while universal remote theft was not demonstrated.
