General Motors is trying to turn the car, the phone app and the vehicle’s computing system into one connected product. At its 2026 GM Forward event, the company announced an OnStar AI Assistant, a single app for its brands, a planned eyes-off highway system and a fourth-generation electric-vehicle platform. The first major software milestones are targeted for 2027, while the autonomous-driving target begins with the 2028 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ.

Those dates are plans, not independently validated results. Today’s Super Cruise remains hands-free driver assistance on compatible mapped roads, and GM has not disclosed final pricing, availability by market or independent performance testing for the announced AI and autonomy systems.

What exactly did GM announce?

GM’s strategy is to make software and centralized computing as important to the vehicle as the engine, battery or body. The company says one architecture will support vehicle controls, artificial intelligence, driver assistance, phone services and over-the-air updates across gasoline, hybrid and electric models.

Program GM’s stated timing What it is intended to do
OnStar AI Assistant First planned for the 2027 Cadillac LYRIQ through an over-the-air update Answer vehicle questions, operate selected functions and escalate to a human advisor
Unified OnStar app Planned for 2027 Replace Guardian and the separate Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC apps
New highway system First planned for the 2028 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ Operate on highways without continuous driver supervision, subject to launch and legal conditions
Fourth-generation EV platform Production timing follows GM’s rollout plans; LMR cell pre-production is expected in late 2027 Increase efficiency and range while reducing wiring, computing and drive-unit complexity

GM describes this as a single data and computing foundation rather than a collection of unrelated features. The company says the architecture offers 40 times more computing power, 30% less wiring and as much as 50% faster cellular connectivity than its prior systems.

What is GM’s OnStar AI Assistant?

OnStar AI Assistant is a voice-controlled, vehicle-specific assistant. GM says a driver will be able to say “Hey OnStar” to adjust the temperature or lights, open the glove box or charge port, and check information such as tire pressure, remaining range and charging status.

It is also intended to explain model-specific features and warning lights. That distinction matters: GM says the system is trained around its vehicles and customer permissions, rather than acting as a generic chatbot with no knowledge of the car. Sterling Anderson, GM’s chief product officer, said the assistant will understand the vehicle deeply and be able to control it.

When an issue requires a person, GM says the assistant can connect the customer with a human OnStar advisor. The company has not published independent measurements of response latency, answer accuracy, failure rates or the safety limits governing each command. Feature availability may also depend on vehicle equipment, connectivity, account permissions and local regulations.

What will the new OnStar phone app do?

GM plans to consolidate OnStar Guardian and the individual Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC apps into one OnStar app beginning in 2027. The goal is for the phone and the vehicle to use the same service layer instead of forcing owners to manage separate brand applications.

Vehicle management and camera access

GM lists remote vehicle management, connected-camera live view and incident recordings among the planned functions. The announcement does not specify which models will support each camera feature, how long recordings will be retained or whether cellular-service requirements will differ by vehicle.

Family coordination

The app is designed to help families coordinate destinations and pickups. GM also says customers will be able to change or turn off feature permissions, an important control when several people share a vehicle or account.

Proactive safety guidance

GM says the app will combine vehicle signals with weather, road and route information to provide safety guidance. The company has not described the alert thresholds, supported regions or whether such guidance will be advisory only. References to home chargers and storage batteries indicate a broader ecosystem, but GM has not identified a specific charger model sold through the app.

When will GM cars drive themselves?

GM says it is developing a highway system that can operate safely without continuous supervision, beginning with the 2028 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ and later extending to gasoline vehicles as well as EVs. Anderson explicitly said GM is not developing an L3 system, but one intended to work without continuous supervision.

This is a future target, not a capability available in current GM vehicles. Super Cruise today is hands-free driver assistance on compatible mapped roads and under stated operating conditions. It still belongs to the supervised-assistance category; drivers must follow the system’s instructions and remain prepared to resume control.

GM cites 1.2 billion customer Super Cruise miles and approximately 1 million miles of full-rate multisensor data collected each month by its data-collection fleet. Those figures describe accumulated company data, not proof that the planned 2028 system has achieved its safety or legal objectives. Road coverage, regulatory approval, weather limits, driver monitoring and the exact responsibilities of the human occupant will determine where an eyes-off system can be used.

How does the centralized computer change the vehicle?

GM’s new architecture moves more functions into a centralized computing system instead of relying on many separate electronic control units. The company says that creates 40 times more processing power, cuts wiring by 30% and improves cellular responsiveness by up to 50% compared with previous systems.

More headroom can make it easier to add software features through over-the-air updates and to process camera, radar and other sensor data for driver assistance. It also creates dependencies: a service outage, software defect, cybersecurity incident or failed update could affect several vehicle functions at once. GM has not published a complete redundancy design or an independent security assessment for the announced platform.

What is GM’s fourth-generation EV platform?

The fourth-generation platform combines LMR prismatic battery cells, redesigned electric drive units, improved aerodynamics and the centralized computer architecture. GM estimates roughly 20% more range per kilowatt-hour than its current vehicles.

Battery chemistry

GM says its lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic cells are designed to deliver 33% greater energy density than lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells at comparable cost. Energy density is only one part of an EV’s result: usable pack capacity, thermal management, vehicle weight, software limits and charging performance also affect real-world range.

Drive units and wiring

GM says the new electric drive units use more efficient motors and upgraded power electronics, reducing part count by about 40% and making the units smaller. The company also attributes a 30% wiring reduction to the broader architecture. Mark Reuss, GM’s president, said the drive-unit redesign is intended to improve efficiency while simplifying the vehicle.

Production timing

GM and LG Energy Solution previously said Ultium Cells planned U.S. commercial production of LMR prismatic cells by 2028, with pre-production expected in late 2027. That schedule is separate from the software launch targets and does not establish when every model using the platform will reach customers.

How does GM compare with Tesla, Rivian and Chinese EV makers?

GM is positioning the program against Tesla and Rivian’s integrated phone-and-vehicle experiences and against the rapid development pace associated with Chinese EV makers. The announcement gives GM a set of targets, but it does not provide a like-for-like independent comparison of latency, autonomy safety, app reliability or vehicle efficiency.

Comparison area GM’s announced approach What a buyer still needs to verify
Phone-to-car integration One OnStar app across GM brands, with controls, cameras, family coordination and permissions Which models receive each feature, subscription requirements and regional availability
Autonomy Current hands-free Super Cruise, followed by a planned unsupervised highway system in 2028 Mapped-road coverage, legal approval, driver responsibility and independent validation
Computing Centralized architecture with GM’s claims of 40-times processing power and faster connectivity Actual update support, uptime, cybersecurity and performance in production vehicles
EV economics LMR cells, about 20% more range per kilowatt-hour, and 40% fewer drive-unit parts Delivered pack costs, charging behavior, durability and model-by-model range
Commercial model Software and connected services treated as recurring revenue Final AI packaging, monthly fees, included functions and cancellation terms

GM’s third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter says the company is on track to approach $7.5 billion in margin-accretive deferred revenue from software and services for the full year. It also expects truck Super Cruise penetration to grow four- to fivefold in 2027. These are GM financial and adoption expectations, not guarantees for individual owners.

Will OnStar AI cost extra?

GM has not announced final pricing for OnStar AI Assistant, the unified app or future predictive-maintenance and family features. MotorTrend reported current OnStar One packages ranging from $14.99 to $49.99 per month in 2026, but that range describes existing packages and should not be treated as the price of the future AI service.

The unresolved questions include whether AI will be bundled with a vehicle, added to an existing plan, sold as a separate tier or limited by model and market. GM’s broader software-revenue target makes subscription packaging strategically important, but it does not establish what an owner will pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the OnStar AI Assistant be added to any existing GM vehicle?

GM has identified the 2027 Cadillac LYRIQ as the first planned recipient through an over-the-air update, but it has not published a compatibility list for older vehicles. Whether an update is possible will depend on each vehicle’s computer hardware, microphones, connectivity and software support.

Does an eyes-off highway system mean I can sleep in the car?

No. GM has not published an operating manual for the planned system, and an eyes-off designation does not automatically remove every occupant duty. Approved roads, driver availability, weather conditions, emergency procedures and local law will define what use is permitted.

Will the unified OnStar app work for people who do not own a GM vehicle?

The announcement describes it as a replacement for GM vehicle and Guardian apps, not as a standalone navigation or family app for non-owners. GM has not stated whether non-owner accounts will receive limited coordination or camera features.

Are LMR batteries automatically safer or longer-lasting than LFP batteries?

GM’s claim concerns energy density at comparable cost, not a blanket safety or durability ranking. Cell chemistry, pack design, thermal controls, charging limits and warranty terms will determine the ownership outcome for each vehicle.
