General Motors says it plans to introduce eyes-off highway driving in 2028, beginning with the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ. That would move beyond today’s Super Cruise, which can steer, accelerate and brake on compatible mapped roads but still requires the driver to watch the road and be ready to take over. GM says the future system will be integrated into the vehicle and its initial operation will be limited to highways, with availability subject to state rules.
Can GM really let drivers take their eyes off the road in 2028?
GM has announced a target, not a currently available feature. In its October 22, 2025 announcement, the company said: “In 2028, GM will introduce eyes-off driving on the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, beginning with highways.” The statement describes a planned operating capability whose launch timing, roads and legal use can still change.

GM’s October 21, 2026 update says autonomous highway driving will expand from the ESCALADE IQ to high-volume full-size SUVs and light-duty pickups. That expansion is a plan rather than a guarantee that every trim, market or model will receive the system at the same time.
Which Cadillac gets GM’s first eyes-off system?
The first named vehicle is the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ. GM describes the capability as factory-integrated hardware and software, not an accessory that owners add to an existing car.

The planned system combines lidar, radar, cameras, high-definition maps, real-world driving data and centralized computing. Because those components are designed into the vehicle, an aftermarket driver-monitoring device or software update should not be treated as equivalent to GM’s announced eyes-off system.
What is the difference between current Super Cruise and planned eyes-off driving?
Both systems are intended for defined roads rather than unrestricted driving, but the driver’s attention is the key boundary. Current Super Cruise is hands-free, not eyes-off; the 2028 system is intended to permit a driver to look away when it is properly engaged on an approved highway.

How is GM building the eyes-off capability?
GM says redundant sensors will cross-check one another so the system can detect vehicles, lane geometry and hazards while the vehicle’s maps define where automated operation is permitted. Sensor fusion is intended to combine those inputs rather than rely on one camera or one map source.
The company also plans a centralized computer platform that brings together propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety functions. GM said in 2025 that the platform could deliver up to 35 times more artificial-intelligence performance and 1,000 times more bandwidth than earlier systems. In its 2026 expansion release, GM described the central compute unit as providing roughly 40 times the compute capability of today’s vehicles and supporting 36 times more data than previous systems. Those figures come from different GM releases and describe different comparisons, so they should not be combined into one single multiplier.

What roads and hazards will the first release handle?
The initial operating domain is highways. That restriction matters because highway driving has more predictable lane structure than urban streets, but it still includes events that can defeat an automated system if it cannot recognize or plan around them.
The Associated Press reported that simulator scenarios included construction zones, rain, traffic, sudden detours, animals and children entering the roadway. A vehicle may therefore be able to look after itself only while the road, weather and map conditions remain inside the system’s approved boundaries. A detour, blocked lane or unrecognized road change could trigger a request for the driver to resume control.

Is Super Cruise already self-driving?
No. Current Super Cruise automates steering, acceleration and braking on compatible mapped roads, but the driver must keep watching the road and remain ready to intervene. GM’s attention system monitors head position and/or gaze, issues escalating visual, haptic and audio warnings, and can bring the vehicle to a controlled stop when the driver does not respond.

The distinction is not just marketing language. Ford BlueCruise is another hands-off system with an attention requirement, while the Associated Press reported that Tesla’s marketed Full Self-Driving still requires human oversight. AP also reported that no passenger vehicle then in production offered eyes-off capability, making GM’s 2028 proposal a different operating boundary rather than a description of what current systems already do.
How is GM validating the system before launch?
GM points to accumulated Super Cruise operation, dedicated data-collection vehicles and high-fidelity simulation as parts of its validation process. In 2026, GM reported more than 1.2 billion hands-free miles and nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles. A 2025 GM release reported more than 700 million hands-free miles across 23 vehicle models; those are dated milestones from separate releases, not figures that should be added together.
During simulator work observed by AP, engineers measured eye movements, stress, attention and takeover timing. The measurements address a practical problem with eyes-off driving: a person who has been looking away may need enough warning and time to understand a changing road before taking control.
Where will GM eyes-off driving be legal?
Availability and permissible use will depend on state rules, according to GM. AP reported that approvals were being handled state by state and quoted autonomous-vehicle analyst Sam Abuelsamid on that uncertainty.

That means a vehicle could have the necessary hardware yet offer different functions, roads or activation rules across the United States. Canadian availability, international launches and the treatment of temporary construction zones or road closures have not been specified in the announced plan.
What will GM’s eyes-off system cost?
GM has not published a price for the 2028 eyes-off capability. The useful current reference is Super Cruise: GM says equipped vehicles include three years of service, after which plans start at $39.99 per month, with discounts available for annual billing.

Will GM eyes-off driving work on city streets in 2028?
The announced launch domain is highways. GM has discussed expanding to more roads and additional models, but it has not promised city-street operation or a date for that expansion.
Can a driver sleep while the eyes-off system is active?
Nothing in GM’s announcement authorizes sleeping or abandoning the driving position. The final owner instructions and state rules will define what the driver must do when the system requests attention or encounters conditions outside its operating domain.
