The full-size Ford F-150 Raptor has used three distinct engine strategies: naturally aspirated V8 power at its 2010 launch, a high-output twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for the regular Raptor from 2017 onward, and a separate supercharged 5.2-liter V8 for the Raptor R beginning in the 2023 model year. The current standard Raptor remains rated at 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, while the 2024–2026 Raptor R produces 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft. That is an evolution rather than a simple return to V8s: Ford kept the turbo V6 as the volume model and added the V8 as a flagship performance variant.

What engine is in the Ford F-150 Raptor?

It depends on the model year and whether the truck is a standard Raptor or a Raptor R. First-generation trucks began with naturally aspirated V8s. Ford changed the regular Raptor to a high-output, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for 2017, and the third-generation standard truck continues with that architecture. The Raptor R, introduced for 2023, adds a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and is sold alongside the V6-powered Raptor rather than replacing it.

F-150 Raptor period Engine architecture Published output What it means
2010 launch period 5.4L naturally aspirated Triton V8 310 hp, 365 lb-ft Early launch engine identified in a specialist generation timeline; Ford’s official material establishes the 2010 Raptor launch.
2010s through 2014 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 411 hp, 434 lb-ft The outgoing V8 identified by Ford in its 2015 announcement.
2017–2020 3.5L high-output EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 450 hp, 510 lb-ft Ford’s model-year brief reported 39 more horsepower and 76 more lb-ft than the 6.2L, plus higher combined fuel economy.
2021–present standard Raptor Revised 3.5L high-output EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 450 hp, 510 lb-ft Third-generation engine with port and direct injection, intercooling and Raptor-specific cooling hardware.
2023 Raptor R launch 5.2L supercharged V8 700 hp, 640 lb-ft A separate, V8-powered flagship rather than the standard Raptor’s replacement.
2024–2026 Raptor R 5.2L supercharged V8 720 hp, 640 lb-ft Ford’s current specification increased peak horsepower while torque stayed at 640 lb-ft.

The generation labels matter when shopping: Ford groups the F-150 Raptor into a first generation (2010–2014), second generation (2017–2020) and third generation (2021–present). A model year outside those ranges is not automatically a different engine family; the Raptor R creates a second engine choice within the third generation.

When did the Raptor switch from a V8 to EcoBoost?

The regular F-150 Raptor switched from naturally aspirated V8 power to the 3.5L high-output EcoBoost V6 for the 2017 model year. The change followed the first-generation truck’s V8 period and was not a mid-generation trim option: the second-generation Raptor’s defining engine was the twin-turbo V6.

2010 launch: 5.4L naturally aspirated V8

The Raptor began production as a 2010 model. A specialist generation timeline lists the launch-period 5.4L Triton V8 at 310 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s official historical material confirms the Raptor’s 2010 beginning, while the detailed early-engine output comes from that specialist timeline rather than a complete Ford early-year specification table.

6.2L V8 through the first generation

The first-generation truck moved to a 6.2L naturally aspirated V8, rated at 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft. Ford’s 2015 announcement describes that 6.2L as the outgoing Raptor engine. In other words, references to a “V8 Raptor” can mean two different first-generation displacements: the early 5.4L or the later 6.2L.

2017: high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V6

For 2017, Ford replaced the 6.2L V8 in the regular Raptor with a high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Ford published 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, gains of 39 horsepower and 76 lb-ft over the 6.2L. The same Ford model-year brief listed 16 mpg combined for the EcoBoost truck versus 13 mpg combined for the 6.2L Raptor. Those are Ford’s published ratings for the compared model years, not a guarantee for every driving route, tire, payload or later configuration.

How is the 3.5L EcoBoost Raptor engine built?

The Raptor EcoBoost is not simply the ordinary F-150’s 3.5L engine with a software change. Ford’s high-output specification adds hardware and calibration intended for sustained high-load off-road driving.

Twin turbochargers and intercooling

Two turbochargers compress the intake charge so a smaller-displacement V6 can produce more torque and horsepower than the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 it replaced. An intercooler lowers the temperature of the compressed air before it enters the cylinders. Ford’s 2017 brief specifically calls out higher-boost twin turbochargers and Raptor-specific charge-air cooling.

Port and direct fuel injection

The engine combines direct injection with port injection. Direct injection places fuel in the combustion chamber, while port injection sprays fuel upstream of the intake valves. Ford retained this dual-delivery approach in the 2021 third-generation specification, pairing it with a 60-degree V6 layout and twin turbochargers.

Hardware for heat and load management

  • Piston-cooling oil jets: Ford identified jets that direct oil at the underside of the pistons to help manage temperature under heavy load.
  • Electronically actuated wastegates: The turbocharger wastegates are electronically controlled rather than relying only on a simple pneumatic arrangement.
  • Variable-displacement oil pump: The pump can vary its output to balance lubrication demand and efficiency.
  • Raptor-specific radiators and charge-air cooling: Ford specified additional cooling capacity for the truck’s high-output application.

The 2021 engine sheet lists a 10.5:1 compression ratio and recommends premium fuel. Fuel requirements can vary by model-year documentation, so an owner should use the manual for the specific truck rather than assume that every Raptor has identical fueling instructions.

Why did Ford replace the 6.2L V8 with a turbo V6?

Ford’s published numbers show two practical objectives: more output from less displacement and better rated fuel economy. The 3.5L produced 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft compared with 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft from the 6.2L, while Ford reported 16 mpg combined versus 13 mpg. Calling that a power-density and efficiency strategy is an interpretation of the figures; Ford’s documents do not state that one sentence as the sole reason for the change.

Turbocharging also changes how the engine delivers its performance. A naturally aspirated V8 relies on displacement and engine speed to move air. The EcoBoost V6 uses exhaust-driven turbochargers to force more air into a smaller engine, allowing strong torque without carrying the 6.2L’s displacement. The trade-off is greater system complexity: turbochargers, intercooling, electronic wastegates and dual-injection hardware all become part of the powertrain.

Ford did not describe the switch as abandoning performance. The company’s launch language framed the Raptor around high-speed off-road capability, and the published output increased even as displacement fell. The engine change therefore represents a different way to meet the same performance brief, not a lower-performance detour.

What changed with the third-generation Raptor in 2021?

The 2021 redesign retained the high-output 3.5L twin-turbo V6 instead of introducing another displacement. Ford’s specification identifies a 60-degree V6, intercooling, port-and-direct injection and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Current Ford specifications continue to list 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft for the standard Raptor.

That continuity is useful when comparing used trucks. A 2017–2020 Raptor and a 2021-or-newer standard Raptor share the basic 3.5L high-output EcoBoost concept, but they belong to different generations and have different vehicle designs, calibration details and model-year equipment. Do not treat the engine name alone as proof that every component, service procedure or rating is interchangeable.

Is the Raptor R a supercharged V8?

Yes. The Raptor R uses a supercharged 5.2L V8, making it the only current F-150 Raptor variant with a V8. Ford launched the Raptor R for 2023 at 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. For the 2024, 2025 and 2026 model years, Ford lists 720 horsepower and the same 640 lb-ft peak torque.

What type of supercharger does it use?

Ford’s engine graphic specifies a 2.65-liter water-cooled inverted supercharger with a maximum boost pressure of 12 psi. “Water-cooled” refers to cooling integrated into the supercharger system, while “inverted” describes the orientation of the compressor arrangement. The 12-psi figure is a maximum boost specification, not a constant pressure at every engine speed or driving condition.

How does the Raptor R fit the lineup?

The Raptor R creates a two-track strategy. Buyers wanting the standard model receive the twin-turbo V6’s 450-horsepower specification; buyers prioritizing maximum published output and a supercharged V8 choose the Raptor R. Ford’s 2023 documentation lists both engines side by side, confirming that the V8 is a distinct flagship version rather than a replacement for the EcoBoost Raptor.

Which Raptor generation has the most horsepower?

The 2024–2026 Raptor R has the highest published output at 720 horsepower. The table below keeps the ratings separated by engine and model-year period so early V8 figures are not confused with the later Raptor R.

Engine Model-year period Horsepower Torque
5.4L naturally aspirated V8 2010 launch period 310 hp 365 lb-ft
6.2L naturally aspirated V8 First generation, through 2014 411 hp 434 lb-ft
3.5L high-output twin-turbo V6 2017–present standard Raptor 450 hp 510 lb-ft
5.2L supercharged V8 2023 Raptor R 700 hp 640 lb-ft
5.2L supercharged V8 2024–2026 Raptor R 720 hp 640 lb-ft

The 2023-to-2024 Raptor R increase is 20 horsepower, while published peak torque remains unchanged. Comparing a 2026 Raptor R directly with a 2017 standard Raptor without naming the variant would obscure the reason for the difference: they are different engines in different versions of the truck.

Does every Raptor use the same engine?

No. Even within the F-150 line, the standard Raptor and Raptor R have different engines. The standard truck uses the 3.5L high-output EcoBoost V6; the Raptor R uses the supercharged 5.2L V8.

Ranger Raptor and Bronco Raptor are separate Ford vehicles with separate engine programs. Their engines should not be folded into an F-150 Raptor timeline, and an advertisement or parts listing that says only “Raptor” is incomplete unless it identifies the vehicle family.

How should you identify an F-150 Raptor engine by model year?

Use the model year, trim designation and vehicle identification number together. The following checklist avoids the most common mix-ups:

  1. Confirm the vehicle family. Make sure the truck is an F-150 Raptor, not a Ranger Raptor or Bronco Raptor.
  2. Check the model year. 2010–2014 trucks are first-generation V8 Raptors; 2017–2020 trucks are second-generation 3.5L EcoBoost Raptors; 2021 and newer standard trucks are third-generation 3.5L EcoBoost Raptors.
  3. Look for the Raptor R designation. A 2023-or-newer Raptor R has the supercharged 5.2L V8. A standard third-generation Raptor has the twin-turbo 3.5L V6.
  4. Verify the VIN and owner’s manual. Ford’s model-year-specific manual is the appropriate reference for fuel, maintenance specifications and service procedures. Confirm the model year and VIN before ordering parts or diagnostic equipment.
  5. Match the published rating to the year. Do not apply the 720-horsepower Raptor R figure to a 2023 Raptor R, which Ford rated at 700 horsepower, or to a standard V6 Raptor.

What is the overall direction of Raptor engine development?

Ford’s sequence moves from displacement-based, naturally aspirated V8 power to turbocharged V6 power and then adds a supercharged V8 as an optional flagship. The 2017 change delivered higher published output and better combined fuel-economy figures than the 6.2L while reducing displacement. The 2023 Raptor R then preserved a V8 experience for customers seeking maximum output without undoing the EcoBoost strategy used by the standard truck.

For a buyer or researcher, the key distinction is not simply “V8 versus V6.” It is which Raptor version and model year is being discussed, what induction system it uses, and which Ford rating applies to that exact configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “high-output EcoBoost” mean on a Raptor?

It is Ford’s designation for the Raptor-specific version of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, not a separate displacement. The designation covers the higher-boost turbochargers, cooling provisions, injection system and calibration described in Ford’s Raptor specifications.

Does the 12-psi Raptor R supercharger run at 12 psi all the time?

No. Twelve psi is Ford’s stated maximum boost figure. Actual boost varies with engine speed, throttle position, load, temperature and calibration, so it should not be read as a constant operating pressure.

Can a 2021 standard Raptor be called a V8 Raptor?

No. The 2021 standard truck belongs to the third generation and uses the 3.5L high-output twin-turbo V6. The V8 designation for a third-generation F-150 applies to the Raptor R, introduced for 2023.

Which Raptor engine requires premium fuel?

Ford’s 2021 specification for the high-output 3.5L EcoBoost recommends premium fuel. Because fuel requirements can vary by model year and configuration, consult the owner’s manual tied to the truck’s VIN before selecting fuel.
