For most used-truck buyers, the 2015–2020 Ford F-150 is the best all-around modern generation—with a preference for well-maintained 2017–2020 examples. If you want a simpler and less expensive older truck, a carefully inspected 2006–2008 F-150 is the strongest alternative.

The 2021–present F-150 has appealing engineering and technology but is still too new for a definitive long-term reliability verdict. The 2009–2014 generation has an attractive average score but requires the most year-specific caution, particularly for 2011–2013 trucks because of documented automatic-transmission downshift concerns. Very old F-150s from 1997–2003 can be durable, but rust, age, neglected maintenance, and prior commercial use now matter more than the generation’s original reputation.

Ford F-150 generations ranked from best to worst

This ranking covers the 10th through 14th F-150 generations, spanning 1997 to the present. It is an editorial buying guide—not an official Ford or NHTSA ranking. The order combines comparable generation-level durability data from iSeeCars with model-year complaint, investigation, recall, age, safety, and product-maturity context from NHTSA and other research.

Rank Generation Years iSeeCars reliability rating Best buying range Verdict
1 13th 2015–2020 8.6 2017–2020 Best overall modern used F-150
2 11th 2004–2008 8.6 2006–2008 Best simpler, older-truck alternative
3 14th 2021–present Not yet available Later, well-documented examples Promising, but too new for a mature verdict
4 10th 1997–2003 8.1 2002–2003 Potentially durable, but age dominates
5 12th 2009–2014 8.6 2014 or documented 2009–2010 examples Widest year-to-year spread; inspect carefully

The identical 8.6 ratings for the 11th, 12th, and 13th generations are important, but they do not make those generations interchangeable. The 13th generation ranks first because it offers newer structure, safety equipment, powertrains, and corrosion-resistant body technology while retaining a relatively strong durability rating. The 11th generation ranks second because its later years can be mechanically straightforward and inexpensive to support. The 12th falls to last because specific model-year safety and transmission issues make its average score unusually misleading.

1. 2015–2020 F-150: best overall modern choice

The 13th-generation F-150 introduced an aluminum body over a steel frame and remained in production through 2020. iSeeCars currently gives it an 8.6 generation reliability rating, tying it with the 11th and 12th generations.

Its first-place position is a buying recommendation, not a claim that every truck from 2015 through 2020 is trouble-free. This generation contains substantial variation in engines, transmissions, equipment, mileage, software, maintenance history, and production year. The 2015 model was the redesign-year truck, so buyers should generally prefer a later, well-documented 2017–2020 example when prices and condition are comparable.

Why the 13th generation leads

  • Newer underlying design: The aluminum body and steel frame brought different weight, corrosion, repair, and collision considerations than earlier F-150s.
  • More modern safety and technology: It is newer than the 10th and 11th generations without being as difficult to evaluate long-term as the newest trucks.
  • Strong comparable durability data: Its 8.6 iSeeCars rating is tied for the highest among the generations with available data in this comparison.
  • Better maturity in later years: A later truck with complete records is preferable to an early redesign-year example with uncertain maintenance or unresolved repairs.

What to inspect before buying

Check the exact engine and transmission rather than shopping by generation alone. Review evidence of turbocharger, cooling-system, transmission, and emissions-system maintenance where applicable. Inspect the aluminum body panels for corrosion and prior collision repairs, and examine the steel frame and underbody for damage or corrosion. A clean-looking body does not eliminate the need to inspect the chassis, suspension, brakes, fluids, and drivetrain.

Best fit: Buyers who want a modern daily driver, tow vehicle, or work truck and can afford a properly maintained example.

2. 2004–2008 F-150: best older and simpler alternative

The 11th-generation F-150 covers 2004–2008 and also receives an 8.6 iSeeCars reliability rating. Its appeal today is not just the generation score. These trucks are older, widely supported by parts and repair information, and generally offer a less electronically complex ownership experience than newer F-150s.

However, buyers should divide the generation by year. Research using complaint and recall context identifies 2004–2005 among the F-150 years that deserve caution, while 2006–2008 are the more attractive targets. Complaint totals are not a perfect reliability measurement: older vehicles have had more years and miles to accumulate complaints, and a complaint count does not establish that every reported problem was severe.

Why choose a 2006–2008 truck?

A well-maintained 2006–2008 F-150 can provide useful truck capability at a much lower purchase price than a 13th-generation model. It may also be easier for an independent shop or experienced owner to diagnose and repair. The trade-off is that the truck is now old enough for condition to outweigh almost every broad generation-level statistic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give special attention to:

  • Frame and underbody corrosion, especially on trucks from areas that use road salt
  • Fuel-system condition and evidence of leaks or hard starting
  • Worn suspension, steering, brakes, and wheel bearings
  • Cooling-system condition and neglected fluid changes
  • Prior fleet, contractor, towing, or commercial use
  • Incomplete maintenance records and inconsistent odometer history

Best fit: A budget buyer who values a simpler older truck and is willing to reject rusty or poorly documented examples.

3. 2021–present F-150: promising, but not proven long-term

The 14th-generation F-150 began with the 2021 model year. Ford’s historical material highlights major interior and technology changes, including an available 12-inch display and a foldable gear selector. Those features and the generation’s newer engineering make it attractive, but they do not yet establish long-term reliability.

iSeeCars lists the 2021–2025 generation but does not provide a generation reliability rating because there is insufficient data. That limitation matters. A newer truck may have fewer recorded failures simply because it has spent less time and accumulated fewer miles in the field. It is therefore more accurate to call the 14th generation promising but not fully proven than to rank it ahead of older generations on assumptions.

Recall verification is essential

NHTSA documented a 2021 SuperCab seat-belt recall affecting approximately 16,430 vehicles built from January 2 through May 27, 2021. This is one reason early-production trucks deserve careful VIN-specific verification. A generic list of model-year recalls is not enough for a purchase decision: use the truck’s vehicle identification number to check for open recalls and confirm that completed work is documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recall repairs are generally performed without charge through the manufacturer’s dealer network, but an open recall should still be treated as a buying issue. Confirm the repair plan and completion status before committing to the truck.

Best fit: Buyers who want the newest features and warranty potential and are comfortable accepting less mature long-term reliability evidence.

4. 1997–2003 F-150: durable potential, but age is now the main risk

The 10th-generation F-150 receives an 8.1 iSeeCars reliability rating, below the 8.6 ratings assigned to the 11th, 12th, and 13th generations. A late-generation 2002–2003 truck can still be useful and relatively straightforward to repair, but age-related deterioration now has more influence than the original design’s reputation.

Complaint-rate analysis identifies 1997–2001 among the years that deserve caution. That should not be interpreted as proof that every truck from those years is unreliable. Nor should the lower complaint rating be treated as a complete ownership forecast. A 1999 truck that spent its life in a dry climate and received regular service may be a better purchase than a 2003 truck with severe rust, fleet use, or missing records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Age-related problems to look for

  • Frame, cab, bed, suspension, and brake-line corrosion
  • Cracked or deteriorated rubber components and weather seals
  • Worn suspension and steering parts
  • Old wiring, electrical faults, and damaged connectors
  • Cooling-system neglect, leaks, and overheating evidence
  • Prior abuse, heavy towing, or commercial service
  • Unclear maintenance, title, or mileage history

Best fit: A low-budget buyer who has access to a thorough inspection and can tolerate age-related repairs. For this generation, condition and rust history should override a small model-year preference.

5. 2009–2014 F-150: the generation requiring the most caution

The 12th-generation F-150 covers 2009–2014 and receives an 8.6 iSeeCars generation rating. On the surface, that places it alongside the 11th and 13th generations. In practice, its model-year spread is too wide for buyers to rely on the aggregate number.

2011–2013 transmission downshift concerns

NHTSA investigation RQ17-010 documented unexpected automatic-transmission downshifts on certain 2011–2013 F-150s. The described condition involved a sudden downshift to a lower gear without driver input, with the potential for rear-tire skid or lock-up. The investigation summary recorded 123 complaints and two crashes.

Ford’s later 2024 chronology records field actions involving certain 2011–2012 vehicles and recalls addressing 2011–2013 trucks. It also states that the 2014 report rate was lower than the rate for 2011–2013. That does not mean every truck in the affected years will experience the problem, or that a repaired truck must be rejected. It does mean that a buyer should verify the VIN, completed recall work, transmission history, and actual test-drive behavior rather than treating all 2009–2014 trucks as equally desirable.

2013–2014 3.5-liter brake concern

NHTSA also documented a master-cylinder defect affecting certain 2013–2014 F-150s equipped with the 3.5-liter engine. The defect could allow brake fluid to leak into the brake booster and potentially cause loss of the front brake circuit. The investigation summary recorded 380 total complaints, 12 crashes or fires, and one injury incident associated with the investigated population.

Those figures describe the investigated population and should not be used to claim that every 2013 or 2014 truck has the defect. They do justify a VIN-specific recall search, documentation review, and careful brake inspection before purchase.

How to shop the 12th generation

The practical preference is a thoroughly documented 2014 after recall and transmission-history verification, followed by a carefully maintained 2009–2010 example. Treat 2011–2013 trucks as purchase candidates only after confirming applicable repairs and obtaining an independent inspection. A low price is not compensation for an unresolved safety-related defect.

Best fit: A buyer who understands the exact truck’s powertrain and service history and is willing to do more research than the generation rating alone suggests.

Why a generation reliability ranking can mislead

1. Engines are averaged together

F-150 generations include multiple gasoline, turbocharged, diesel, and hybrid powertrains depending on year and configuration. A generation score averages across those combinations. It does not prove that one engine is universally the best choice or that every engine within a generation has the same failure pattern.

2. Transmissions can change the recommendation

The 12th-generation downshift investigation illustrates why transmission-specific research matters. A generation may post a respectable average score while a particular year, transmission, calibration, or affected population deserves additional scrutiny.

3. Older and newer trucks fail differently

Older F-150s may have fewer electronic systems but more corrosion, worn rubber, deteriorated wiring, neglected fluids, and prior-use damage. Newer trucks may have better materials and safety systems but less mature long-term data and more complex electronics. Reliability is not simply the number of reported failures; it is also the cost, severity, and likelihood of the problems a buyer is likely to encounter.

4. Recall counts are not reliability scores

A recall may address a relatively minor issue, while a smaller number of complaints can involve a serious safety concern. Complaint totals also accumulate as vehicles age. Use complaint and recall information to identify questions for the inspection—not as a substitute for inspecting the individual truck.

5. The VIN matters more than a generic year list

NHTSA recommends using its VIN lookup tool to identify open recalls. The VIN check is especially important when evaluating 2011–2013 trucks, certain 2013–2014 3.5-liter trucks, and early 2021 vehicles. Ask the seller for permission to verify the VIN yourself rather than relying only on a listing description.

Used F-150 pre-purchase inspection checklist

Generation rankings are useful for narrowing the search, but a used-truck inspection decides whether a specific example is worth buying. Use this sequence:

  1. Record the complete VIN. Confirm the model year, cab style, engine, drivetrain, and configuration. Verify that the truck being inspected matches the title and listing.
  2. Check open recalls. Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and compare the results with Ford service documentation. Confirm that recall repairs have been completed.
  3. Review maintenance records. Look for regular oil and filter service, cooling-system work, transmission service where specified, brake repairs, and evidence that prior defects were addressed.
  4. Inspect the frame and underbody. Look for structural corrosion, cracks, bent components, damaged brake or fuel lines, oil leaks, and evidence of off-road or towing damage.
  5. Inspect the body carefully. Check aluminum panels on 2015–2020 trucks for corrosion, bubbling, mismatched paint, poor panel gaps, and collision repairs. Also inspect the bed, cab mounts, doors, and tailgate.
  6. Start the truck cold. A cold start can reveal hard starting, abnormal smoke, rattling, warning lights, rough running, or noises that disappear after the engine warms up. Do not accept an inspection that begins with the engine already warm unless the seller explains why.
  7. Check for fluid leaks. Examine the engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials, cooling system, power steering system where equipped, and brake system.
  8. Test the transmission fully. Check engagement from Park into Drive and Reverse, shift quality at light and heavy throttle, highway behavior, towing-related symptoms, and any unexpected downshift or harsh engagement. This step is particularly important for 2011–2013 trucks.
  9. Test brakes and steering. The pedal should feel firm and consistent. Watch for pulling, vibration, warning lights, fluid loss, or any indication of reduced braking performance.
  10. Scan the truck for stored codes. An OBD-II diagnostic scanner can identify some stored diagnostic information and is a useful screening tool, but it cannot detect every mechanical, structural, or safety problem. Do not treat a clean scan as a substitute for a professional inspection.
  11. Check four-wheel-drive equipment if applicable. Engage the system according to the owner’s instructions and confirm that the transfer case, front axle, controls, and warning indicators operate correctly.
  12. Order an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the truck on a lift before purchase, especially if the vehicle is old, modified, heavily used, or being purchased remotely.

A vehicle-history report can help identify title problems, accidents, mileage inconsistencies, and commercial use, but it cannot replace a physical inspection. The most reliable purchase is the truck with the best combination of VIN-verified recall history, maintenance records, rust-free condition, and independent mechanical evaluation.

Maintenance resources for F-150 owners

Ford provides digital owner manuals through its support resources and Ford app. Manuals can be searched by VIN, year, and model. Use the exact manual for the truck rather than relying on a generic maintenance schedule, particularly when the truck has a different engine, drivetrain, towing package, or service-duty configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ford’s owner-manual materials emphasize following the specified maintenance intervals and recording completed work. Those records help protect the truck’s reliability and give the next buyer evidence of how it was used.

A Ford F-150 repair manual can also be useful for maintenance planning and repair context. Haynes lists F-150 coverage for ranges including 2004–2014, 2015–2020, and 2021–2024. Match the manual to the model year, engine, drivetrain, and generation before ordering. A repair manual is a reference aid—not a replacement for factory service information or professional diagnosis of brakes, steering, structural damage, airbags, or other safety-critical systems.

Which F-150 generation should you buy?

Your priority Best starting point What to watch
Best overall used F-150 2017–2020 Exact engine and transmission, maintenance, aluminum-panel corrosion, cooling and turbo-related service
Lower purchase price and simpler ownership 2006–2008 Frame rust, suspension wear, fuel-system condition, fleet use, and missing records
Newest technology and warranty potential 2021–present Limited long-term data, early-production recalls, VIN verification, and repair complexity
Lowest-cost entry point 2002–2003, only if exceptionally well maintained Age, rust, wiring, cooling, rubber components, and prior abuse
12th-generation purchase 2014 after verification, or documented 2009–2010 truck Transmission history, applicable recalls, and 3.5-liter brake-system concerns

If two trucks are similarly priced, choose the one with better records, less corrosion, fewer modifications, and a documented inspection—even if it belongs to a lower-ranked generation. A well-maintained 2008 can be a better buy than a neglected 2018, and a repaired 2012 may be safer than an unrepaired truck with a supposedly better reputation. The ranking narrows the search; the individual vehicle earns the final decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2015–2020 F-150 more reliable than the 2009–2014 generation?

As a broad used-truck recommendation, yes: the 2015–2020 generation ranks higher editorially because it combines an 8.6 iSeeCars rating with newer design and safety technology. Prefer later 2017–2020 examples, and inspect the exact engine, transmission, body, frame, and service history. The 2009–2014 generation also rates 8.6 overall, but 2011–2013 transmission-downshift concerns and certain 2013–2014 3.5-liter brake-system concerns make year- and VIN-specific research essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are all 2011–2013 Ford F-150s unsafe?

No. The documented NHTSA investigation involved certain vehicles and recorded unexpected downshifts, complaints, and crashes. A specific truck may have had applicable repairs or may not be part of the affected population. However, buyers should verify the VIN, completed recall work, transmission history, and test-drive behavior before purchase rather than assuming the entire model-year range is equivalent.

Is a 2006–2008 F-150 a good used-truck purchase?

It can be the best older and simpler alternative, particularly when compared with 2004–2005 examples. But these trucks are now old enough that frame rust, suspension wear, cooling-system neglect, fuel-system condition, commercial use, and missing records can outweigh the generation’s reliability rating.

Does the 2021–present F-150 have a reliability rating yet?

The research data used for this ranking lists the 2021–2025 generation but reports that a generation reliability rating is unavailable because there is insufficient data. The generation may prove reliable, but it is too new for a confident long-term comparison with older F-150s.

Can an OBD-II scanner confirm that a used F-150 is reliable?

No. A scanner can reveal some stored diagnostic information and is useful during screening, but it cannot identify every mechanical, structural, corrosion, brake, transmission, or safety problem. Use it alongside a cold start, road test, VIN recall check, records review, and independent inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with a well-maintained 2017–2020 F-150 if you want the strongest overall balance of modern design and available reliability evidence. Choose a 2006–2008 truck when simplicity and purchase price matter more, but reject rust and poor records. Treat 2021–present as promising but not fully proven, and approach 2009–2014—especially 2011–2013—with detailed VIN, recall, transmission, brake, and inspection checks. The condition of the individual truck matters more than any generation ranking.
