He was still angry about the crash—and still questioning why he believed stewards treated a separate Racing Bulls incident differently—but said the lost points could not be recovered.
What happened in the Baku crash?
At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Safety Car restart, Colapinto locked up and hit Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly. Gasly then collided with McLaren’s Lando Norris. All three drivers retired. Gasly had been running seventh, while Colapinto had been fighting for ninth, making the incident a major lost points opportunity for Alpine. Formula1.com reported the crash and Alpine’s initial response on September 27, 2026.

Colapinto accepted responsibility and apologized to the team and Gasly. Briatore initially said he would take time to consider what action, if any, Alpine should take.

What did Briatore mean by saying the past is the past?
Speaking at the Team Principal’s Press Conference in Malaysia on October 2, Briatore described himself as disappointed and upset with Colapinto’s mistake, but said Alpine had to look ahead because the points were gone. “We need to keep looking always for the future, and the past is the past, and nothing can be done,” he said, according to Crash.net’s October 2 report.

His message did not establish that Colapinto faced no internal consequences. Briatore said, “Whatever we do is internal to the team.” That leaves any private team response undisclosed; publicly, his emphasis was on moving forward rather than relitigating the crash.
Why was Briatore comparing the crash to a Racing Bulls incident?
Briatore also challenged what he saw as inconsistent stewarding. He said Alpine had been penalized while Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad had not been penalized after a separate collision with teammate Liam Lawson, and characterized the incidents as the same. That was Briatore’s comparison, not an official finding that the two incidents were identical.

Colapinto said they had discussed what needed discussing and wanted to make the team stronger. Their comments support the public move-on message, but do not reveal whether Alpine took private action. Formula1.com reported their comments on October 1, 2026.
