There is no single “best” circuit among Singapore, Monaco and Baku. Each tests a different Formula 1 skill: Singapore combines a long, bumpy lap with heat, humidity and sustained concentration; Monaco is the shortest and narrowest, making precision and track position exceptionally important; Baku is the longest, pairing a very fast shoreline straight with the slow, confined streets of the Icheri Sheher old town.
If you want the clearest answer to the usual comparisons, Baku is longest by lap distance, Monaco is hardest to overtake on because of its narrow layout, and Singapore is the most consistently draining physical test. The right choice depends on whether you value speed contrast, precision or endurance.

At a glance: the three circuits
The circuits use different lap lengths, so their lap counts cannot be compared as a simple measure of race size. Monaco needs 78 laps because one lap is only 3.337 km; Baku needs 51 laps for a 6.003 km lap. Singapore sits between them in length but runs for 62 laps.
| Circuit | Lap length | Turns and laps | Listed race distance | Signature character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marina Bay, Singapore | 4.927 km | 19 turns / 62 laps | 305.337 km | Night race, humid conditions, bumps, long straights and technical corners |
| Circuit de Monaco | 3.337 km | 78 laps | 260.286 km | Extremely narrow streets and limited passing opportunities |
| Baku City Circuit | 6.003 km | 51 laps | 306.049 km | Long shoreline straight followed by tight old-town corners |
The figures above are the current Formula 1 event-profile values reviewed for 2026. Singapore’s 4.927 km measurement is also shown on the FIA’s 2025 event map. An older Formula 1 profile still displays 5.063 km and 23 corners, but those are not the current Singapore layout figures.

Singapore: the endurance and concentration test
What the current layout looks like
Marina Bay is 4.927 km long and has 19 turns. The circuit’s 2023 revision removed a four-corner section and replaced it with a longer straight, reducing the turn count from 23 to 19. That change matters because it altered the rhythm of the lap: there is now a more pronounced acceleration section between the remaining technical complexes rather than an almost continuous sequence of corners.
The lap still asks the driver to make repeated braking, turning and acceleration decisions while keeping the car close to unforgiving walls. The circuit has meaningful straights, but they do not turn Singapore into a simple top-speed venue. A car must retain enough aerodynamic performance for the slower corners while remaining efficient enough to accelerate strongly along the straights.
Why it is physically demanding
Singapore is run at night, yet the climate remains hot and humid. The surface is described by Formula 1 as bumpy, and the combination of heat, moisture, frequent corners and a long race distance creates a heavy workload. Drivers must maintain concentration for 62 laps and manage physical fatigue without allowing small errors to become wall contact.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Former Renault Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer described the circuit this way: “Marina Bay is a long, complex circuit, and draining as well – a little bit like Monaco – with plenty of bumps.” That description captures the key distinction between Singapore and a conventional permanent track: the challenge is not one spectacular corner, but the cumulative effect of an entire lap repeated under difficult environmental conditions.
Singapore’s identity
Singapore joined the official Formula 1 calendar in 2008 and hosted the championship’s first night race. Floodlit racing is now central to the venue’s identity, not a cosmetic detail. The artificial lighting, humid air and city setting create a visual environment unlike Monaco or Baku, while the physical demands remain central to the sporting challenge.

Formula 1 lists a 2025 Singapore lap record of 1:33.808 by Lewis Hamilton. That is a named statistic for the current profile; it should not be used to compare the circuits’ outright speed because lap-record conditions and layouts differ.
Monaco: precision, proximity and track position
The shortest lap and tightest streets
The Circuit de Monaco measures 3.337 km, making it the shortest of the three. Its race distance is listed as 260.286 km over 78 laps. The high lap count is a direct consequence of the compact route, not evidence that the event is longer than Singapore or Baku.
Monaco’s defining feature is width. The streets leave little room for a driver to correct a mistake, and barriers sit close to the racing line. Corners that might be routine on a permanent circuit become precision exercises because the driver must position the car accurately while protecting the tyres and avoiding contact.
Why overtaking is difficult
Monaco is the clearest answer to “Which of these street circuits is hardest to overtake on?” The narrow route restricts side-by-side racing and leaves fewer places where a driver can use a speed advantage without relying on a mistake, a pit-stop difference or changing conditions. Qualifying and track position therefore carry unusual weight.
That does not mean every Monaco race is static. Safety-car periods, weather, tyre strategy and reliability can change the order. It does mean that the physical layout gives a leading car more protection than the wider or faster sections at Singapore and Baku. A driver who can place the car precisely and avoid errors gains value even when outright lap speed is close.

Historical importance
The Monaco Grand Prix began in 1929 and appeared on the inaugural 1950 World Championship calendar. Its significance therefore comes from both its sporting characteristics and its continuity as a city-street event. Unlike Singapore’s modern night-race identity or Baku’s newer high-speed contrast, Monaco’s appeal is rooted in a long pre- and post-championship history.

Baku: the biggest contrast between speed and confinement
Longest lap, lowest and highest demands in one circuit
Baku City Circuit is 6.003 km long, the longest of these three venues. It runs for 51 laps, with a listed race distance of 306.049 km. The circuit’s identity comes from the abrupt transition between two very different environments.
Along the shoreline, the long main straight supports high speed and slipstreaming. Cars can follow one another closely over a substantial distance, creating a stronger opportunity for a pass than the narrowest parts of Monaco. At the other end of the lap, the route climbs into the Icheri Sheher old-town section, where the corners are tight, winding and much less forgiving of a wide car or a poor line.
The setup compromise
Baku forces teams to choose how they divide performance between the straight and the old town. More downforce helps in the slow, twisting section, but creates drag on the shoreline straight. Less downforce improves acceleration and maximum speed, yet can make the car harder to control through the narrow corners.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
This compromise is more obvious at Baku than at either Singapore or Monaco. Singapore also combines straights with technical corners, but its defining problem is sustained physical stress. Monaco prioritizes precision almost everywhere. Baku makes the trade-off visible in the stopwatch: a car can be excellent in one sector and vulnerable in another.
History
Baku hosted its first Formula 1 event as the 2016 European Grand Prix. From 2017 onward, the race became the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Its relatively recent arrival helps explain why the circuit’s reputation is associated with its unusual layout rather than with decades of tradition.
As with Monaco, current Baku profile pages reviewed for 2026 expose older lap-record years in their record fields. Those figures are omitted rather than presented as current records.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Overtaking and race strategy compared
Monaco: position is usually the primary asset
Because the streets are exceptionally narrow, a driver often needs track position before the race begins. Qualifying performance, a clean launch and an effective pit-stop window can matter more than having a car that is marginally faster in free air. The circuit’s layout limits the number of conventional passing opportunities, so strategy is frequently about protecting position as much as creating it.
Singapore: opportunities exist, but execution is demanding
Singapore’s longer straights provide braking approaches and acceleration zones, while the technical sections punish a driver who arrives offline or overheats the tyres. Passing is therefore linked to maintaining a strong exit from the preceding corner. The bumpy surface and humidity add difficulty to every repeated braking and traction event.

Baku: the strongest slipstream story
Baku offers the clearest straight-line passing mechanism of the three. The shoreline straight can let a following car gain from slipstreaming before the braking zone. However, a driver still has to survive the slow old-town section and manage the car’s compromise between drag and cornering performance. A car optimized for the straight may be exposed in the technical section; a car optimized for the corners may be difficult to pass there but vulnerable on the run toward the finish.

How to choose your favorite
Choose Singapore if you value endurance
Singapore is the best fit for readers who want to understand how climate, bumps and repetition affect a driver over a full Grand Prix. Its 19-turn lap is not as short and concentrated as Monaco’s, nor as split between extremes as Baku’s. Instead, it asks for sustained accuracy while fatigue accumulates.
Choose Monaco if precision and history matter most
Monaco is the choice for readers fascinated by margins measured in centimeters. The narrow streets make every qualifying lap and every barrier clearance significant. Its 1929 origins and place on the first 1950 championship calendar add historical weight that the newer venues do not share.

Baku provides the most obvious visual and technical contrast: high-speed running beside the waterfront, followed by slow corners among historic walls. It is the most natural choice if you enjoy setup compromises, slipstream battles and races in which a car’s strengths can change dramatically from one sector to the next.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
Lap length, turn count and race distance are useful for scale, but they do not produce an objective difficulty ranking. Monaco’s 78 laps do not make it longer than Baku; they reflect its short lap. Singapore’s 19 turns do not automatically make it easier than Monaco’s streets; the climate, bumps and repeated physical load change the nature of the work. Baku’s 6.003 km lap does not mean every part is fast, because its old-town section is among the most confined portions of the three.
The most useful comparison is therefore multi-dimensional: use the official dimensions to understand scale, the layout descriptions to understand passing and setup, and the venue history and environment to understand identity. On that basis, Singapore is the endurance specialist, Monaco the precision specialist and Baku the speed-contrast specialist.
