Donut Lab Solid-State Battery Claims: 400 Wh/kg, Five-Minute Charging, and the Evidence

Donut Lab’s battery claims are extraordinary, but the public evidence supports only a narrower conclusion: VTT testing indicates rapid charging in a limited test, while 400 Wh/kg, 100,000 cycles, exact chemistry, and full vehicle performance remain unverified.

Short answer: Donut Lab claims that its all-solid-state Donut Battery delivers 400 Wh/kg, charges fully in five minutes, and is designed to last 100,000 cycles. Those figures remain company claims in the reviewed public record.

VTT Research’s commissioned measurements make the story more credible than a press release alone. Publicly described results include 0%-to-80% charging in approximately 4.5 minutes and sample-specific self-discharge or temperature behavior. However, the reports do not independently verify the complete package: they do not establish the 400 Wh/kg calculation, exact chemistry, 100,000-cycle life, or production-vehicle performance.

The right way to read the Donut Lab battery story is as a claims-versus-evidence investigation. The fast-charging result is noteworthy; the headline specification as a whole is not yet independently proven.

The company also describes the battery as safe across extreme temperatures, lower-cost than lithium-ion, and made with abundant materials. Those are Donut Lab’s claims. The reviewed public evidence does not independently establish the complete package.

That distinction matters because these are separate engineering questions. A battery can demonstrate unusually fast charging without also proving a particular energy density, chemistry, cycle life, cost structure, and production-vehicle performance. At present, the strongest public evidence concerns rapid charging and selected behavior of tested samples—not every specification on the product page.

What the public VTT testing actually shows

On February 20, 2026, VTT Research said it had measured Donut Lab battery samples in its research laboratory. VTT described the work as commissioned by Donut Lab for product development, with Donut Lab planning to publish the results as a series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the testing more substantial than an unsupported press release, but it is important to describe the relationship accurately. VTT is an established research organization performing commissioned measurements. The reviewed public record does not show a complete, independent certification of every Donut Lab specification.

Self-discharge testing

One public report concerns a Donut Lab Solid-State Battery V1 sample. The sample was charged to approximately 50% state of charge and observed for 10 days in a self-discharge test.

This can provide useful information about how that sample retained stored energy over that particular interval. It does not constitute:

  • a 100,000-cycle durability test;
  • a measurement of 400 Wh/kg;
  • proof of the battery’s exact chemistry; or
  • proof that every production cell will behave the same way.

Fast-charge testing

Public reporting on the first VTT fast-charge results describes charging a sample from 0% to 80% in approximately 4.5 minutes. That is relevant evidence that the tested sample could accept energy rapidly over that charging window.

It is narrower than proving a complete 0%-to-100% charge in five minutes under ordinary vehicle conditions. It also does not by itself show that the result can be repeated thousands of times, maintained at high and low temperatures, achieved without excessive cooling hardware, or delivered by a production vehicle’s charger and battery-management system.

  • [Advanced Safety]: Charge with peace of mind thanks to implemented state-of-the-art security protocols and 10+ multiple system protection that prevent overcharging, short circuits and a series of potential dangers. Bright LED display offers a clear and intuitive way to monitor the battery level.

The distinction between 80% and 100% is not a technicality. Charging often becomes more constrained near the top of the battery’s state-of-charge range, and a manufacturer’s definition of full can differ from the usable range available to a driver. A proper comparison needs the test protocol, the usable-energy window, charging power, cell temperature, starting temperature, and whether the result applies to a cell, module, or complete pack.

Temperature and other sample behavior

VTT’s work also examined selected temperature behavior of a sample. That may be meaningful evidence about the tested cell’s operation in the reported conditions. It should not automatically be expanded into a blanket claim that all production batteries are safe or fully functional across every extreme temperature condition.

Public technical analysis of the released reports identifies two especially important omissions: the reports did not document a cell-mass measurement and did not verify the battery chemistry. Without a documented mass measurement paired with measured usable energy, the 400 Wh/kg figure cannot be reproduced from those reports. Without chemistry analysis, the reports do not independently establish the exact composition or the all-solid-state classification.

Claim-by-claim evidence

Donut Lab claim What can safely be said What remains unproven
400 Wh/kg Donut Lab advertises 400 Wh/kg. The reviewed VTT evidence does not independently establish the relevant mass, usable energy, measurement protocol, or whether the figure is at cell or pack level.
Five-minute full charge Donut Lab claims a five-minute full charge. Public reporting on VTT testing describes 0%-to-80% charging in about 4.5 minutes. A complete 0%-to-100% vehicle-relevant charge, repeated over the service life, has not been independently demonstrated in the reviewed record.
100,000 cycles The battery is advertised as designed for 100,000 cycles. No completed independent 100,000-cycle demonstration was located. The required depth of discharge, temperature, charge rate, discharge rate, and end-of-life threshold are also not established publicly.
All-solid-state chemistry Donut Lab calls the battery all-solid-state. The reviewed reports do not disclose independent chemistry verification or enough composition and architecture information to confirm the classification.
Extreme-temperature operation VTT testing examined selected temperature behavior of a sample. Sample-specific results do not prove broad production performance, safety, or usable range across every advertised temperature.
Production deployment Donut Lab announced OEM readiness and a Verge motorcycle application. The reviewed record does not independently verify customer deliveries of the exact claimed battery configuration, particularly in the United States.

Why 400 Wh/kg is the most important unresolved number

Energy density is not one universally interchangeable measurement. When a company quotes 400 Wh/kg, a reader needs to know at least:

  • whether the figure applies to an individual cell, a module, or a complete battery pack;
  • the mass included in the calculation, such as casing, terminals, cooling components, controls, and safety hardware;
  • the usable-energy window rather than merely the cell’s theoretical or total measured energy;
  • the charge and discharge rates used during the test;
  • the temperature at which the measurement was made;
  • the sample’s condition and manufacturing status; and
  • whether the figure applies at beginning of life or after degradation.

A pack-level result is normally more useful to a vehicle buyer because the vehicle carries the entire pack, not just the electrochemical material. A cell-level result can still be a valuable technical achievement, but it should not be treated as the range or weight capability of a finished motorcycle or car unless the pack overhead is disclosed.

The public VTT material reviewed for this article does not provide enough information to independently reproduce Donut Lab’s 400 Wh/kg figure. In particular, the absence of a documented mass measurement tied to usable energy leaves the central calculation unverified.

That does not prove the number is false. It means the public evidence is incomplete. The appropriate wording is therefore Donut Lab claims 400 Wh/kg, not VTT proved a 400 Wh/kg battery.

What a five-minute charge would—and would not—mean in a vehicle

A very fast cell-level charge is only one part of an electric vehicle charging system. A production vehicle also needs:

  • a charger and electrical connection capable of delivering the required power;
  • high-current conductors, fuses, contactors, and connectors;
  • thermal management to control cell temperature during charging;
  • a battery-management system that can safely balance and protect the cells;
  • a charging curve that remains acceptable across the battery’s state of charge; and
  • durability after repeated fast-charge events.

The public 0%-to-80% result is therefore encouraging as a charging test, but it cannot establish the complete user experience. It does not tell us how much energy was stored, how large the test cell was, what charging power was required, how much cooling was used, or whether the same result applies to a motorcycle-sized pack.

Donut Lab’s January 5, 2026 CES announcement used slightly different language for the vehicle application. It said the battery was ready for OEM use and would power 2026 Verge motorcycles. That announcement described charging in less than 10 minutes and up to 60 kilometers of combined range per minute of charging. Donut Lab’s battery page separately presents the five-minute full-charge figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those statements should not be silently merged. A five-minute battery-page claim, a less-than-10-minute vehicle announcement, and a 0%-to-80% laboratory result describe different things. Until the company publishes the complete test conditions and vehicle-level charging data, the most accurate summary is that Donut Lab claims extremely rapid charging and VTT testing supports rapid charging over a narrower interval.

What does 100,000 cycles mean?

Cycle-life claims need a test definition. A credible 100,000-cycle result would need to specify, among other things:

  1. the depth of discharge for each cycle;
  2. the charge and discharge rates;
  3. the operating temperature;
  4. the permitted charging range and voltage limits;
  5. the number and selection of tested cells;
  6. the capacity-retention threshold used to define end of life; and
  7. whether the result is based on full equivalent cycles or a different counting method.

For example, repeatedly moving between a narrow portion of the battery’s state-of-charge range is not equivalent to repeatedly using the full usable capacity. Fast charging, high temperatures, deep discharges, and high-power operation can also affect durability. A cycle number without those conditions is not enough to predict how long a vehicle battery will last in a particular owner’s use.

Donut Lab describes the battery as designed for 100,000 cycles. That wording indicates a design target or company commitment, not a completed public demonstration of 100,000 cycles under a defined independent protocol. The reviewed VTT reports do not fill that gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it independently proven to be all-solid-state?

Not from the reviewed public test record. Donut Lab classifies the product as all-solid-state, but the public reports discussed here focus on property and performance measurements rather than independently disclosing and verifying the cell’s complete chemistry.

The phrase all-solid-state is also not a substitute for a full specification sheet. To assess the claim, readers would need clear information about the electrolyte, electrodes, interfaces, separators or equivalent structures, manufacturing process, and the composition of the exact cell tested. A laboratory can measure charging, self-discharge, or temperature behavior without publicly certifying every aspect of a cell’s chemistry.

That is why the careful description is: Donut Lab calls the battery all-solid-state, while the reviewed public reports do not independently verify its exact chemistry.

Verge TS Pro: announced application, not proof of every battery claim

Donut Lab connected the battery to Verge motorcycles in its CES announcement, identifying the Verge TS Pro as a 2026 application. Verge-related public material describes the TS Pro with up to 600 kilometers of range and rapid charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This establishes a partner and application narrative. It does not independently prove that the motorcycle’s pack achieves 400 Wh/kg, that it uses the exact V1 sample tested by VTT, or that it will deliver 100,000 cycles. Vehicle range depends on many variables, including battery capacity, speed, aerodynamics, rider and cargo weight, tires, temperature, route, and the test method.

The delivery question is also unresolved. As of August 12, 2026, the reviewed sources do not provide a sufficiently clear and independently verifiable U.S. delivery record for a Verge TS Pro using the exact claimed Donut Battery configuration. It would be premature to tell ordinary U.S. customers that they can order and receive a verified 400 Wh/kg Donut Battery-powered TS Pro without current delivery and specification documentation.

Cova Power and the commercial-vehicle angle

Donut Lab and Ahola Group have also announced Cova Power, a smart-trailer venture aimed at freight transport. The concept combines battery storage, in-wheel propulsion, and intelligent control in a trailer intended to function as a drop-in fleet-electrification solution.

Cova Power’s official material reports potential savings of up to 54% in diesel consumption and up to 30% in total energy consumption, citing University of Oulu research and simulations. Those figures may make the trailer concept worth following as a commercial-vehicle application, but they are application-level claims. They do not validate Donut Lab’s disputed 400 Wh/kg, five-minute, 100,000-cycle, or all-solid-state specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The smart-trailer project may eventually provide useful real-world evidence because commercial fleets can generate operational data under repeated loading and route conditions. For now, it should be treated as a separate deployment story rather than confirmation of the battery’s headline specifications.

What evidence would settle the question?

The most useful next disclosure would be a complete, reproducible test package covering the exact production-intent cell or pack. It should include:

  • the battery chemistry and cell architecture;
  • the identity and manufacturing status of the tested sample;
  • measured cell and pack mass, with every included component listed;
  • usable energy measured over a stated voltage and state-of-charge window;
  • the resulting Wh/kg calculation;
  • charge power and the complete charge curve from 0% to 100%;
  • cell temperature and cooling conditions;
  • repeat fast-charge results over a meaningful number of cycles;
  • cycle-life results with depth of discharge, rates, temperature, and end-of-life criteria; and
  • vehicle-level results from a production-intent pack.

Independent witnessing or replication would make the evidence stronger still. The key is not simply the name of the laboratory. It is whether another party can inspect the sample, understand the measurement basis, reproduce the calculation, and connect the result to a production configuration.

Verdict: promising fast-charge evidence, incomplete headline proof

Donut Lab may have demonstrated unusually rapid charging and interesting temperature or self-discharge behavior in selected battery samples. VTT’s publicly described measurements give the story more substance than a company announcement alone.

But as of August 12, 2026, the reviewed public record still treats the central specifications as company claims. There is no complete, independently reproducible demonstration tying together the battery’s exact chemistry, measured mass, usable energy, 400 Wh/kg energy density, five-minute full charge, 100,000-cycle life, and production-vehicle performance.

The fairest conclusion is neither that Donut Lab has proved the battery revolution nor that the claims have been disproved. The evidence supports a narrower statement: Donut Lab’s battery appears to merit attention for its reported fast-charging results, while its full performance and chemistry package remains unverified in the public record.

Evidence scope: This assessment is based on the Donut Lab battery page and CES announcement, Donut Lab’s public testing and technical statements, VTT Research’s notice about commissioned measurements, the publicly described VTT reports and technical analysis, Verge application material, and Cova Power’s published smart-trailer information reviewed through August 12, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has VTT independently verified Donut Lab’s 400 Wh/kg energy density?

No. Donut Lab claims 400 Wh/kg, but the reviewed public VTT reports do not document the cell or pack mass and usable energy needed to reproduce that calculation. The figure should be reported as a company claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did VTT prove Donut Lab’s five-minute full-charge claim?

It supports a narrower fast-charge claim. Public reporting describes a Donut Lab sample charging from 0% to 80% in approximately 4.5 minutes. That is not the same as independently proving a complete 0%-to-100% charge in five minutes under normal vehicle conditions.

Has the 100,000-cycle battery-life claim been demonstrated?

Not in the reviewed public record. Donut Lab describes the battery as designed for 100,000 cycles, but no completed independent 100,000-cycle demonstration with defined test conditions was located.

Can U.S. customers currently buy a verified Donut Battery-powered Verge TS Pro?

Donut Lab announced the battery for 2026 Verge motorcycles, but the reviewed sources do not provide a sufficiently clear, independently verifiable U.S. delivery record for a TS Pro using the exact claimed battery configuration.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Donut Lab claims 400 Wh/kg, five-minute full charging, 100,000-cycle durability, and an all-solid-state design. VTT’s publicly described tests support rapid charging in a narrower 0%-to-80% test and provide selected sample data, but they do not independently verify the full specification package. The decisive missing evidence is a reproducible test documenting chemistry, mass, usable energy, charging conditions, degradation, and production-vehicle performance together.
