10 Reasons the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager Is Criminally Underrated

The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is enormous and heavy, but its 1,700cc torque, low seat, cruise control, ABS, luggage, fairing, belt drive, and two-up touring equipment make it far more compelling than its reputation suggests.

The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is underrated for a simple reason: it looks like too much motorcycle before you understand what Kawasaki built around its 1,700cc V-twin. It is huge, heavy, and unmistakably old-school—but it also delivers 107.6 lb-ft of torque, electronic cruise control, K-ACT ABS, a frame-mounted fairing, integrated luggage, intercom-compatible audio, a low 28.7-inch seat, six-speed overdrive gearing, and belt final drive.

That does not make the Voyager the best touring motorcycle for every rider. Its 895.2-pound curb weight, nearly 101-inch length, and limited 5.3 inches of ground clearance are serious compromises. But for riders who want a low-slung, full-dress cruiser for covering long highway miles—especially with a passenger—the Voyager’s specification sheet makes a far stronger case than its reputation suggests.

1. The 1,700cc V-twin produces the kind of torque touring riders actually use

Displacement alone does not make a touring motorcycle good. The useful question is how the engine delivers its power when the bike is loaded with two adults, luggage, and touring equipment.

The Voyager’s liquid-cooled, 52-degree V-twin produces a stated 107.6 lb-ft of peak torque at 2,750 rpm. That is a low-rpm torque profile suited to relaxed highway travel. It gives the motorcycle the mechanical character buyers expect from a large cruiser while providing the reserve needed for highway roll-ons and loaded touring.

The important claim is not that the Voyager is faster than every competitor. There is no need for that argument. Its strength is usable thrust at modest engine speed: the kind of output that makes a heavy touring motorcycle feel appropriate for long-distance work rather than underpowered once luggage and a passenger are added.

2. The touring equipment is standard, not an expensive afterthought

Many cruisers can be converted into touring motorcycles with enough accessories. That is different from starting with a motorcycle designed as a complete touring package.

Kawasaki equipped the Voyager with the features that define its mission:

  • Electronic cruise control
  • K-ACT linked anti-lock braking technology
  • A frame-mounted fairing
  • Integrated luggage
  • Passenger-oriented touring equipment
  • An audio system compatible with an intercom setup

That equipment matters because it reduces the need to buy, install, and troubleshoot a touring conversion before the first serious trip. The fairing, luggage, cruise control, and passenger provisions are part of the motorcycle’s basic identity—not accessories added to make a standard cruiser more practical.

3. The low seat height makes a giant motorcycle easier to manage at a stop

The Voyager has a claimed 28.7-inch seat height. That number stands out because the motorcycle itself is physically enormous.

A low seat can improve reach to the ground, make stops less intimidating, and give some riders more confidence when maneuvering away from a fuel pump or traffic light. It can also be valuable for shorter riders who want a full-size touring motorcycle without a tall adventure-bike-style seating position.

However, the low seat does not make the Voyager beginner-friendly. A rider still has to control nearly 900 pounds of motorcycle, and the bike’s width and length remain significant. The accurate description is “low seat, huge motorcycle,” not “easy for everyone.”

4. It was designed around two-up travel

The Voyager makes sense for riders who regularly travel with a passenger. Its integrated luggage, full fairing, passenger seating, and touring-oriented layout are evidence of a motorcycle designed to carry two people over distance rather than simply imitate a bagger parked outside a coffee shop.

Experience a cloud-like feel with every mile.
  • ERGONOMIC CRUISER DESIGN:Designed with a deep bucket shape and subtle pocket contours to provide excellent lower back support. The wide driver area distributes weight evenly, preventing numbness during those long weekend rides on the highway.
  • EASY INSTALLATION & STYLISH UPGRADE:Installs in minutes using the bike's original hardware. The classic tuck-stitch design and textured grain enhance the muscular look of your Vulcan while providing superior comfort compared to the stock OEM seat.

Kawasaki’s accessory catalog reinforces that purpose. It lists comfort-focused options such as front and rear gel seats and a taller trunk backrest pad. Those parts are not proof that every rider needs them, but they show where the motorcycle’s factory support is directed: long days, passenger comfort, and more personalized fit.

A passenger also benefits from the Voyager’s substantial physical presence. The fairing and luggage create a more complete travel environment than a lightly equipped cruiser, while the low-revving engine and highway gearing support a calmer pace.

5. Six-speed overdrive gearing suits long highway days

The Voyager uses a six-speed transmission with an overdrive top gear. Period road testing noted that the upper gears kept engine speed relatively low at highway velocity, which fits the bike’s relaxed touring character.

That gearing helps explain why the Voyager can feel more composed on an interstate than its traditional cruiser styling might suggest. The rider is not forced to keep a large V-twin spinning hard simply to maintain distance-covering speeds.

Overdrive should not be confused with a guaranteed fuel-economy advantage. Real-world consumption depends on speed, load, weather, tire condition, riding style, and maintenance. The defensible benefit is reduced engine speed and a calmer highway personality—not a specific miles-per-gallon promise.

6. The belt drive simplifies routine touring ownership

Kawasaki specifies a carbon-fiber-reinforced belt final drive for the Voyager. For riders who spend most of their time on paved roads, that is a meaningful practical advantage over a chain-driven touring motorcycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A belt generally requires less routine attention than a chain. There is no regular chain-cleaning and lubrication routine, and there is no chain fling covering nearby components in lubricant. That can be especially welcome for riders preparing for a multi-day trip.

“Lower maintenance” does not mean “maintenance-free.” Belt condition, alignment, tension, pulleys, and the surrounding drive system still deserve inspection. A belt can also be more involved to replace than a chain if it is damaged, so it should not be treated as indestructible. Its appeal is reduced routine upkeep, not immunity from service.

7. The fairing and integrated luggage make it a finished touring tool

The Voyager’s frame-mounted fairing is central to the motorcycle, not decorative trim. Because it is attached to the frame rather than carried entirely by the handlebars, it contributes to the bike’s full-dress touring layout without making the handlebar-mounted assembly solely responsible for supporting the fairing’s mass.

  • Premium Materials: The saddle seat cushion is constructed with soft premium synthetic leather, high-density sponge and high quality ABS plastic back plate
  • Easy Installation: One-piece driver passenger seat saddle provides fast, easy, tool-less installation, simply replaces the stock seat

The integrated luggage is equally important. A rider does not have to begin with a stripped-down cruiser and immediately budget for saddlebags, mounting hardware, touring controls, and weather protection. The Voyager arrives with the infrastructure needed for serious paved-road travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wind protection is still a matter of personal fit. Kawasaki’s accessory listings include multiple windshield sizes and related hardware, allowing owners to adjust the protection to their height and riding position. If you are shopping for a Vulcan 1700 Voyager windshield, verify the model year, ABS or non-ABS designation, screen height, and mounting hardware before ordering; fitment should never be assumed from the name alone.

8. It combines cruiser character with useful safety equipment

The Voyager does not try to disguise itself as a sport-tourer. It has the long, low proportions and large V-twin that define a traditional American-style touring cruiser. What makes it more compelling is that Kawasaki added electronic equipment without removing that character.

Electronic cruise control is particularly valuable on long, straight roads. It can reduce the need to hold a constant throttle position and make highway riding less tiring, although the rider must remain fully attentive and ready to take control.

K-ACT ABS adds another layer of braking assistance. Anti-lock braking is not a substitute for correct speed, following distance, tires, or rider judgment, but it is meaningful equipment on a motorcycle this heavy and capable of carrying a passenger and luggage. The combination of cruiser styling, cruise control, and ABS gives the Voyager a more complete touring specification than its old-school appearance suggests.

9. Kawasaki supports it with a genuine parts and accessory ecosystem

Used motorcycles are easier to recommend when owners can still identify the correct parts and factory-supported accessories. Kawasaki provides model-year parts diagrams, owner-center resources, and accessory pathways for the Voyager.

Depending on model year and market, the catalog may include items such as:

  • Replacement or alternate-height windshields
  • Motorcycle covers
  • Seats and gel-seat options
  • Trunk backrest pads
  • Communication cables and helmet-speaker components
  • Replacement batteries and other service parts

This does not mean every part is always in stock or equally easy to source. Availability can vary by year, country, dealer, and whether the motorcycle is an ABS-equipped version. The advantage is that the Voyager has a documented support path rather than relying exclusively on used-market anecdotes or improvised universal accessories.

10. Its biggest weakness is also the reason some riders love it

The Voyager weighs a claimed 895.2 pounds at the curb. It is approximately 100.8 inches long, 39.2 inches wide, and has about 5.3 inches of ground clearance.

Those figures explain the bike’s drawbacks. Parking lots require planning. Backing downhill can become a serious problem. A missed footing at walking pace can be difficult to recover from. Loading or unloading it from a tight garage requires more space and care than a middleweight motorcycle. Its limited ground clearance also makes it a poor choice for rough roads, aggressive cornering, or riders who prioritize lean angle.

But the same mass and dimensions contribute to the Voyager’s identity. They make room for full touring bodywork, integrated luggage, a large engine, passenger accommodations, and a planted presence on the highway. The weight is not irrelevant; it is the price of admission. Riders who accept that trade receive a substantial full-dress touring platform instead of a lightweight motorcycle pretending to be one.

Why does the Voyager get overlooked?

The word “underrated” should be used carefully here. It does not mean the Voyager defeats every Harley-Davidson touring model, Honda Gold Wing, or newer adventure-tourer. Those motorcycles have different strengths, audiences, and engineering priorities.

The Voyager is overlooked partly because it lacks the cultural shorthand of a Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle, the technological halo associated with a Gold Wing, or the novelty of a modern adventure-tourer. It also looks dated beside lighter, more electronic motorcycles. That can cause shoppers to focus on its size before considering its completeness.

Period testing presented the Voyager as Kawasaki’s return to full-dress touring and highlighted its highway-oriented engine and gearing. Its specification remains persuasive even when its styling and conventional mechanical formula no longer generate much attention.

Who should buy a Vulcan 1700 Voyager?

  • Highway-focused riders: The torque, overdrive gearing, fairing, cruise control, and luggage suit long paved-road journeys.
  • Two-up travelers: The passenger accommodations and integrated touring equipment make it a logical platform for riding with a partner.
  • Riders who prefer a low seat: The 28.7-inch seat can make stops more approachable than the motorcycle’s overall size suggests.
  • Traditional cruiser fans: The Voyager preserves large V-twin character rather than pursuing sport-bike lightness or adventure-bike ergonomics.
  • Owners who want standard equipment: Cruise control, ABS, fairing, luggage, audio compatibility, and belt drive reduce the need for an immediate touring conversion.

Who should not buy one?

  • Riders who regularly maneuver in tight spaces: The weight and dimensions demand deliberate parking and low-speed technique.
  • Anyone prioritizing lightness: A middleweight sport-tourer or modern adventure-tourer will generally be easier to move around manually.
  • Sport-oriented riders: The Voyager’s ground clearance, wheelbase, and cruiser geometry are not aimed at aggressive cornering.
  • Riders who spend significant time off pavement: Its clearance, weight, fairing, and road-focused equipment make rough surfaces a poor fit.
  • Buyers seeking the newest connectivity and chassis technology: The Voyager’s appeal is its conventional, complete touring-cruiser formula—not cutting-edge electronics.

Used-buying checklist: what to verify before purchasing

A used Voyager can be attractive, but its size and equipment make a careful inspection more important than a quick visual check.

  1. Check the VIN for open recalls. NHTSA documentation identifies a recall affecting 2009–2015 Vulcan 1700 Voyager and Voyager ABS motorcycles. Verify completion by VIN through the relevant recall system or a Kawasaki dealer before buying.
  2. Review maintenance records. Look for evidence of scheduled servicing, fluid changes, brake work, cooling-system maintenance, and belt inspection.
  3. Inspect the belt and pulleys. Look for damage, abnormal wear, contamination, and signs of incorrect alignment or tension.
  4. Test the ABS and electronic systems. Confirm that warning lights behave normally and that cruise-control, audio, controls, and other equipment operate as expected.
  5. Examine the fairing and luggage mounts. Cracks, loose hardware, water intrusion, and poorly repaired damage can be expensive on a fully dressed motorcycle.
  6. Check suspension and steering components. A heavy touring motorcycle places substantial loads on bearings, suspension components, tires, and brakes.
  7. Confirm battery fitment. Some parts references identify an FTZ16-BS-compatible battery path, but the exact specification must be confirmed for the motorcycle’s model year and market.
  8. Practice the low-speed routine before committing. Sit on the motorcycle, turn the bars at a walking pace, back it up, and assess whether you can safely control it with the tank and luggage loaded.

Smart Voyager upgrades

The best upgrades should address the motorcycle’s actual use rather than add decoration. A properly fitted windshield can improve weather protection, while a gel seat or taller trunk backrest may make long two-up days more comfortable. Communication equipment can also make sense because the factory audio system is designed to support an intercom-compatible setup.

Before buying any accessory, verify the model year, ABS status, mounting arrangement, and whether the part is intended for the exact Voyager configuration. Universal motorcycle parts are not automatically suitable for a motorcycle with integrated fairing, luggage, and factory audio components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The verdict

The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is not underrated because its flaws are imaginary. The weight is real. The ground clearance is limited. The bike is physically demanding at low speed and less attractive to riders who want light, sporty handling or modern adventure-bike versatility.

It is underrated because those drawbacks often end the conversation before the strengths receive proper attention. For the right rider, the Voyager offers a low seat, a high-torque liquid-cooled V-twin, six-speed overdrive, belt drive, cruise control, ABS, integrated luggage, frame-mounted wind protection, passenger-focused equipment, and a substantial highway presence in one factory-built package.

That is not a claim that it is the best motorcycle in every touring category. It is a more useful conclusion: if your priority is relaxed paved-road distance, two-up capability, traditional cruiser character, and a long list of standard touring equipment, the Voyager deserves a much closer look than its reputation usually earns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager best for?

The Voyager is best suited to riders who prioritize long paved-road trips, relaxed highway speeds, integrated luggage, passenger comfort, and traditional V-twin cruiser character. It is especially appealing to two-up travelers and riders who prefer a low seat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the main disadvantage of the Vulcan 1700 Voyager?

The biggest concern is its 895.2-pound curb weight. It can be demanding when backing up, parking, loading, or maneuvering at walking pace. Its 5.3 inches of ground clearance also limit rough-road and aggressive cornering capability.

Is the Voyager belt drive maintenance-free?

No. The belt drive generally requires less routine attention than a chain, but it still needs inspection for wear, damage, alignment, and correct tension. It is lower-maintenance, not maintenance-free.

How tall is the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager seat?

Yes, the Voyager has a 28.7-inch claimed seat height. That makes reaching the ground easier than the motorcycle’s size might suggest, but the low seat does not make the nearly 900-pound motorcycle suitable for every beginner.

Are there recall checks for a used Vulcan 1700 Voyager?

NHTSA documentation identifies a recall affecting 2009–2015 Vulcan 1700 Voyager and Voyager ABS motorcycles. Used buyers should check the VIN for recall completion and review the motorcycle’s service records before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is a poor choice for riders who want lightness, ground clearance, or sporty handling, but a compelling one for highway travelers who value torque, comfort, standard touring equipment, and a low seat. Its 895.2-pound weight is the central compromise—and the reason a careful test of low-speed control should come before purchase.
