Do Winter Tires Work Better on Smaller Wheels?

Narrower winter tire dimensions showed advantages in snow, slush and aquaplaning in specific tests, but fitment and road conditions determine the right setup.

Sometimes—but “smaller wheels” can mean different things. Tests found that narrower winter tire dimensions had advantages in snow, slush and aquaplaning, while wider dimensions did better on dry roads. Those comparisons tested complete tire-and-wheel dimensions, not rim diameter by itself, so they do not prove that downsizing is best for every car.

What “smaller wheels” means for winter tires

Wheel diameter and tire width are separate measurements. A smaller rim may be paired with a tire that is narrower, taller in sidewall, or both. A complete size change—sometimes called a minus-size package—must preserve the vehicle’s approved fitment and suitable overall tire diameter. The winter comparisons discussed below changed complete tire dimensions; they did not isolate rim diameter as the cause of a performance difference.

What the winter tire comparisons found

Snow, slush and aquaplaning

In a 2018 comparison, ADAC tested five sizes of the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 on a Volkswagen Golf, from 195/65 R15 to 225/40 R18. The narrower dimensions had advantages in snow, slush and aquaplaning. ÖAMTC’s 2018 comparison likewise reported that smaller dimensions were safer on snow and slush and had lower aquaplaning risk. These are findings from particular tests, not guarantees for other cars or tire models. ADAC’s test and results; ÖAMTC’s comparison.

Dry pavement

The trade-off ran the other way on dry roads: ADAC reported better dry-surface performance for the wider size, and ÖAMTC found the largest dimension had the greatest advantage on dry roads. If winter driving in your area often means bare pavement rather than snow or slush, that matters too.

HANKOOK Winter ipike X W429 185/65R15 88T
  • Hankook Winter i Pike RS2 W429 is a Premium Touring studded winter tyre with directional tread pattern, designed for Passenger cars.
  • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified
  • Can be pinned with TSMI #11 studs, where permitted, for extra traction in severe ice and snow
  • Wide block in the center of the tread provides improved snow and ice traction
  • Built with a new rubber compound that boosts strength and durability for a longer tread life

How large were the differences?

ADAC judged all five tested sizes “good” overall and said there were no significant performance differences among them. It also said the differences between dimensions were smaller than the differences between tire models in the same dimension. In other words, these tests suggest a conditional advantage for narrower sizes in certain winter conditions—not a rule that the smallest available fitment is always best.

Wear, cost and snow chains

ÖAMTC reported somewhat greater wear for the narrow size as well as a lower purchase cost. It also warned that not all tested dimensions were compatible with snow chains. Those observations are test-specific; check chain compatibility for the exact tire, wheel and vehicle combination you plan to use.

When a smaller rim may make sense

A smaller-diameter wheel can allow a smaller-inside-diameter tire, which may cost less, and a second wheel set can avoid mounting and removing tires on the same rims each season. The Automobile Protection Association says to maintain the total diameter of the original wheel-and-tire combination when downsizing; a second set may also need its own wheel-mounted TPMS sensors. Its example of a Honda Civic LX equipped with 205/55R16 tires and a possible 195/65R15 winter setup applies to that configuration only, not to other Civic versions or vehicles. How to choose a safe winter setup

  1. Check the vehicle’s approved fitments. Use the owner’s manual, door-jamb tire label or manufacturer fitment information; have a tire professional verify the proposed winter package for your exact vehicle.
  2. Confirm the specifications. The replacement tires must meet the vehicle’s required load and speed ratings, and the wheels must clear the brakes. Keep the overall wheel-and-tire diameter within the vehicle’s approved fitment.
  3. Check practical requirements. Verify snow-chain compatibility if you may need chains, and confirm how TPMS will work with a second wheel set.
  4. Fit four matching winter tires. Transport Canada recommends tires bearing the mountain-and-snowflake symbol and installing winter tires as a set of four. It cautions against mixing tire size, type, speed rating or load index across the wheels. Transport Canada’s winter tire guidance.

The right choice depends on the vehicle’s approved sizes and the conditions you actually drive in. A narrower approved winter dimension may be advantageous in snow and slush, but neither a smaller rim nor a narrower tire is a universal shortcut to better winter performance.
