Perth’s reported average price for unleaded petrol was expected to reach 208.9 cents a litre on Wednesday, 9 March 2022, the first time the city average had passed $2 a litre, according to a PerthNow report published the previous afternoon. This is a historical figure, not a current fuel price.
What was the average petrol price in Perth in March 2022?
PerthNow reported on 8 March 2022 that the city’s average unleaded price was expected to reach 208.9 cents per litre (c/L) the next day. The report called it a record, more than 20 c/L above the previous reported high of 195 c/L on 23 February. A separate local report later said the average was 208.9 c/L on 9 March and 212.4 c/L on 10 March, citing FuelWatch data (PerthNow, 8 March 2022; Western Independent, 10 March 2022).
The 208.9 c/L figure is a city average, not a price charged at every service station. PerthNow reported that Tuesday, 8 March, was the low point of the price cycle at 179.1 c/L, with a near-30 c/L increase expected overnight. It also reported that a BP station in Langford would charge 228.9 c/L on Thursday, 10 March. These figures describe different things: a low point in the cycle, an expected city average and one station’s price (PerthNow).
Why did petrol prices rise in Perth?
The PerthNow report connected the increase to pressure in international oil markets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It said Brent crude had risen by around US$30 per barrel over the preceding fortnight to more than US$124, attributing that figure to WA Treasury Corporation (PerthNow’s contemporaneous explanation). That is the report’s explanation at the time, not proof that one factor alone caused the local price rise.
Where can I check the cheapest petrol near me?
Use FuelWatch, the Western Australian Government’s fuel-price comparison service, to compare nearby stations and check prices for today and the following day. FuelWatch guidance says that in most of WA, retailers notify the service of the next day’s price by 2 p.m. and must hold that notified price for 24 hours from 6 a.m. Check the live listings before travelling, because station prices can differ from the city average and change with the local price cycle.
A 2026 WA Government announcement also illustrates that local station prices may move differently from a city average; its prices and savings are specific to that announcement and should not be treated as current without checking FuelWatch (WA Government announcement).

How well is the 2022 figure verified?
The exact historical figure is supported by contemporary media reports, including a second report that attributed daily averages to FuelWatch data. However, no primary FuelWatch daily-price archive record matching the 9 March 2022 figure was located (source limitation). It is therefore best described as a contemporaneously reported average, rather than an independently verified figure from a retrieved primary record.
