Cold weather can weaken batteries, lower tire pressure, make visibility harder and reduce electric-vehicle range. Start with the symptom: check what you can safely, follow your owner’s manual for vehicle-specific procedures, and get professional help for damage or suspected system faults.

Why winter driving deserves extra preparation

In 2023, 101,390 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in snow or sleet conditions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Those crashes included 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes. These figures describe crashes that occurred in those conditions; they do not establish that weather alone caused every crash. NHTSA’s winter driving guidance recommends preparing the vehicle before severe weather.

Why won’t my car start in the cold?

Cold reduces available battery power, while a cold gasoline or diesel engine needs more power to start. NHTSA puts it simply: “When the temperature drops, so does battery power.” A slow crank or no-start can point to a weak battery, but it is not proof that the battery itself is the only problem.

Arrange for a mechanic to check the battery and charging system, belts and any needed repairs. Replacing the battery should follow diagnosis and the vehicle’s requirements. Hybrids have model-specific starting systems; consult the owner’s manual and use qualified service if yours will not start rather than applying procedures meant for a conventional car. NHTSA recommends a vehicle inspection, and its hybrid and electric vehicle guidance directs owners to vehicle-specific information.

Why does my tire-pressure warning come on in winter?

As temperatures fall, tire pressure falls too. A seasonal pressure change does not, by itself, prove there is a leak. Measure every tire, including the spare, when the tires are cold: NHTSA defines cold tires as those on a vehicle that has not been driven for at least three hours.

  1. Find the recommended pressure in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle placard, usually on the driver-side door frame.
  2. Use a tire-pressure gauge to check each tire and inflate to the vehicle’s recommended pressure.
  3. Inspect the tread and sidewalls for punctures, bulges or other damage. Have a tire professional assess damage or pressure that keeps dropping.

Do not use the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended setting. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance explains cold-pressure checks and tire safety.

What if washer fluid freezes or the windshield stays smeared?

Before winter weather, fill the reservoir with high-quality winter washer fluid that contains de-icer. Check that the wipers and front and rear defrosters work, and replace worn wiper blades. A snowstorm can use a surprising amount of washer fluid, so check the reservoir before a trip. If glass remains difficult to clear, do not drive until visibility is adequate. NHTSA recommends winter fluid, working wipers and defrosters.

How should I handle a coolant concern?

Check the coolant level and required specification using the owner’s manual. NHTSA recommends checking for leaks and having coolant tested; old coolant may need draining or replacement according to the vehicle maker’s instructions. A mechanic can inspect suspected leaks, badly worn hoses and other repairs.

Do not choose coolant by color or mix products based on color alone. Coolant specifications and service procedures vary by vehicle, so use the manual or ask a qualified mechanic. NHTSA’s winter preparation advice also recommends checking coolant and hoses.

Why does an EV lose range in cold weather?

Cold can reduce electric-vehicle and hybrid-electric driving range. An EV’s battery thermal management can also use energy that otherwise would have gone toward driving, so the effect varies with weather and vehicle features; there is no single range-loss percentage that applies to every vehicle.

What should I do if I get stuck or stranded?

If you are stopped or stalled in wintry weather, NHTSA advises staying with the car, making it visible with bright markers and the interior dome light, and avoiding overexertion. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to reduce the risk of exhaust entering the vehicle. Run the engine only sporadically and only long enough to stay warm; do not run it for long periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space.

Which winter checks apply to my vehicle?

Vehicle Cold-weather concern Useful preparation
Gasoline or diesel Cold reduces battery power, and a cold engine needs more power to start. Have the battery, charging system and belts checked; keep up with shared tire, coolant, visibility and emergency-supply checks.
Hybrid Cold can affect battery power and electric driving range; starting systems vary by model. Follow the owner’s manual for starting and service procedures, and use qualified service if the vehicle will not start.
Electric vehicle Cold can reduce range, and battery thermal management uses energy. Park under cover when possible, precondition while plugged in if supported, plan charge for the commute and follow connector instructions.

How can I prepare tires and visibility for winter?

Keep tires at the pressure specified on the vehicle placard or in the manual, and inspect them regularly. NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow; the right choice depends on local conditions, vehicle fit and applicable rules. Check the manual and consult a tire professional when choosing tires. NHTSA TireWise provides tire-safety information.

For visibility, confirm that wipers, defrosters and lights work, and carry winter washer fluid with de-icer. For broader pre-trip checks and emergency preparation, consult NHTSA’s winter vehicle guidance.
