Do Electric Cars Explode? The Facts About EV Fires

EVs can catch fire, but current comparative evidence does not show they are more likely to do so than gasoline cars. Here is what thermal runaway, charging, crashes, flooding, reignition and EV fire blankets really mean.

Yes, electric cars can catch fire—but the evidence does not support the claim that they explode or catch fire more often than gasoline or diesel cars. The more accurate concern is what happens when a high-voltage lithium-ion battery is damaged or enters thermal runaway: it can release flammable and toxic gases, retain dangerous energy, ignite again after appearing extinguished and expose responders to high-voltage shock.

So the answer is neither EVs are fireproof nor EVs explode all the time. EV fires are real, but frequency, severity and response difficulty are different questions. For an owner, the practical rule is simple: evacuate, call emergency services, identify the vehicle and do not attempt amateur firefighting, battery repair or conventional towing.

At a glance: what the evidence actually says

Claim Best-supported answer
Electric cars explode all the time. False. EV fires happen, but they are not an everyday feature of normal driving, and the available comparative evidence does not show that EVs are more likely to catch fire overall.
EV fires are exactly like gasoline-car fires. Not quite. Both can produce intense heat, toxic smoke and rapidly spreading flames, but a damaged high-voltage battery adds shock, stored-energy, gas-release, delayed-ignition and reignition hazards.
EVs catch fire only while charging. False. Charging can be involved, but crashes, flooding, overheating, internal shorts, manufacturing defects and other damage can also create a battery hazard.
A flooded EV is safe after it dries out. False. A flooded or salt-water-exposed battery can remain hazardous after the vehicle is out of the water.
Putting out the visible flames ends the danger. False. Cells can retain energy, continue heating internally and reignite after the vehicle appears to be extinguished.
An EV fire blanket is a simple fix. Not reliably. A blanket can hide visible flames while thermal runaway and flammable-gas production continue.

What is thermal runaway?

Thermal runaway is an uncontrolled battery reaction in which a cell generates heat faster than it can safely release it. As the temperature rises, the cell can build pressure, vent gases, smoke, ignite and transfer heat to neighboring cells or modules. A localized problem can therefore spread through part of a high-voltage battery pack.

The initiating event is not always the same. Possible triggers include crash damage, crushing, an internal short circuit, overheating, overcharging, water intrusion, vibration and manufacturing defects. Investigators must determine the cause case by case; the presence of a lithium-ion battery alone does not prove why a particular vehicle caught fire.

Thermal runaway may produce obvious flames, but it does not have to. Visible gas vapors, intermittent smoke or flame, popping sounds and unusual odors can accompany a battery failure. A pack that is temporarily quiet or no longer showing flames is not automatically safe.

Are electric cars more likely to catch fire?

Current comparative evidence does not establish that EVs are more fire-prone than gasoline or diesel cars. That is the responsible conclusion—not that EV fires are impossible, and not that EVs are universally safer from fire in every circumstance.

For example, a GOV.UK review of international evidence reported no demonstrated higher likelihood of fire for electric vehicles. It also cited Norwegian data from 2016 through 2021 in which petrol or diesel vehicles were involved in fires at roughly four times the proportional rate of EVs. Separate UK government guidance summarized early insurance-claim data showing lower reported fire-claim rates for EVs than for petrol and diesel vehicles.

Those figures should not be turned into a universal statistic for the United States or any other country. EVs and combustion vehicles do not have identical fleet ages, driving patterns, ownership mixes or exposure to crashes. Fire databases may define and count incidents differently, and some battery incidents may not be reported consistently. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has described lithium-ion fire data as fragmented, incomplete and likely underreported.

There is also a basic measurement problem: EVs are a younger and changing part of the vehicle fleet. A comparison can shift as more high-mileage, older EVs enter service and as battery designs, charging equipment and safety systems change. The fairest summary is therefore:

  • EVs can catch fire.
  • The available evidence does not show a higher overall fire likelihood than gasoline or diesel vehicles.
  • EV battery fires can be unusually difficult to manage once they occur.
  • Fire-frequency comparisons remain limited by geography, fleet composition, definitions and incomplete reporting.

Frequency is not the same as severity

This distinction explains much of the confusion around EV fires. How often a fire occurs is one question. How difficult it is to control, monitor, transport and store the damaged vehicle is another.

A gasoline vehicle carries a flammable liquid and can produce an intense, fast-moving fire. An EV has many of the same combustible materials—plastics, upholstery, tires and wiring—but a damaged traction battery can add hazards that persist after the first flames are knocked down. A battery fire may involve multiple cells and modules, release flammable gases, create high-voltage shock risks and reignite later.

Consequently, a difficult battery incident does not prove that EVs catch fire more often. Conversely, a lower or uncertain fire probability does not make an individual battery fire harmless.

What is different about an EV battery fire?

High-voltage shock

High-voltage components and cables can remain dangerous after a collision or fire. The familiar orange cables identify high-voltage wiring on many vehicles, but owners should not assume that anything not colored orange is safe to touch on a damaged car. Do not handle exposed cables, battery parts or damaged electrical components.

A vehicle may be switched off or appear disabled while hazardous energy remains in the battery system. Isolation systems can disconnect portions of the high-voltage circuit, but that does not mean every cell is discharged or that a crushed battery is safe to approach.

Stranded energy

The National Transportation Safety Board has identified stranded energy as a responder concern: energy can remain stored in a battery even after the vehicle is disabled and the visible fire is controlled. That energy can contribute to later heating, electrical hazards or another ignition.

Flammable and toxic gases

When cells overheat, their internal materials can break down and vent gases. Those gases may be hot, flammable and harmful to breathe. A battery pack can therefore remain a serious hazard even when flames are intermittent or hidden inside the vehicle.

Do not approach a smoking or venting EV to investigate an odor, popping sound or apparent absence of flame. Move people away and let trained responders assess it.

Delayed ignition and reignition

Cooling the outside of a pack may not immediately cool every affected cell inside it. Thermal runaway can continue within the pack, and a vehicle that appears extinguished can later reignite. Research and official guidance do not support promising one universal cooldown time. The required monitoring, recovery and storage period depends on the vehicle, the damage and the incident conditions.

Myth: EVs catch fire only while charging

Charging is one possible part of an EV fire scenario, but it is not the only pathway. A collision can crush or deform the pack. Floodwater can damage high-voltage components. Excessive heat, vibration, an internal short circuit or a manufacturing defect can also initiate a hazardous battery event. Some vehicle fires may begin in a non-traction-battery component, such as wiring or the 12-volt system.

For home charging, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends using certified charging equipment on a suitable dedicated circuit, connecting it directly rather than through an extension cord or multiplug adapter, maintaining the charging components and paying attention to visible damage. These steps reduce preventable equipment and installation hazards; they cannot guarantee that a damaged or defective traction battery will never fail.

If a charging cable, plug, vehicle inlet, wall unit or battery has visible damage, stop using the system and obtain qualified assistance. Do not keep charging a vehicle that has been in a serious collision or flood unless the manufacturer and a qualified professional have determined that it is safe.

A certified Level 2 EV charger can be a practical home-charging option when the vehicle and the property’s electrical service support it, but certification and correct installation are not a shield against a damaged high-voltage battery. The relevant safety issue is the entire installation—not simply the label on the charger.

Myth: a flooded EV is safe once it is out of the water

Flooding can create continuing electrical and fire risks, particularly after salt-water exposure. The battery may not be visibly burning when the vehicle is removed from water, yet damage can remain inside the pack or high-voltage system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises that flooded electric and hybrid vehicles can present high-voltage shock hazards. Its guidance says a damaged lithium-ion vehicle should not be parked in a garage or within 50 feet of a house, structure, vehicle or combustible material. If it is possible to do so without approaching an unsafe vehicle, keep people away and isolate it outdoors at that distance while contacting emergency services and the dealer or manufacturer.

Do not open the battery, inspect exposed components, attempt a repair or decide that the vehicle is safe because it has dried. Tell the tow operator, insurer, repair facility and emergency responders that the vehicle is an EV or hybrid and has been flooded. Recovery and storage should follow vehicle-specific professional guidance.

Myth: the danger ends when the flames are out

Visible flame is only one observable part of a battery incident. Cells may still be hot or undergoing thermal runaway inside the pack. Gases may continue to form, and stored energy may remain after the vehicle has been shut down.

This is why responders may continue cooling, monitoring and restricting access after the obvious fire has ended. A damaged EV should not automatically be moved into a garage, enclosed workshop, parking structure or other area where a later fire would be harder to detect or escape.

Myth: an EV fire blanket is the simple answer

A fire blanket may look like an attractive way to contain a burning car, but current safety advisories warn against treating EV blankets as a universal solution. In experiments reported by the U.S. Fire Administration, a blanket could remove visible flames while thermal runaway continued and flammable battery gases accumulated underneath.

That creates a particularly dangerous condition: when air is introduced into an oxygen-depleted mixture of battery gases, the mixture can ignite and create an explosion risk for firefighters nearby. The Fire Safety Research Institute has reported the same underlying concern.

A department may consider a blanket as one tool within a trained response plan, but its use involves ventilation, exclusion zones, monitoring and an understanding that hiding flames is not the same as stopping battery failure. For a private owner, a blanket is not a substitute for evacuation and emergency services, and it should not be used as a reason to approach a burning or venting vehicle.

What to do if an EV is burning or may have battery damage

For a suspected vehicle fire or a damaged high-voltage battery, the safest owner response is to create distance and provide information—not to fight, open or move the vehicle.

  1. Get everyone away. Leave the vehicle and move people well clear of smoke, flames, popping sounds and possible battery-gas release. Do not return for belongings.
  2. Call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; elsewhere use the local emergency number. Report that the vehicle is an EV or hybrid if known.
  3. Do not touch high-voltage parts. Stay away from exposed orange cables, battery components and damaged electrical parts, even if the vehicle appears switched off.
  4. Do not improvise repairs or suppression. Do not open, puncture or dismantle the battery. Do not attempt to tow a damaged vehicle conventionally. Do not approach with a household extinguisher or garden hose to solve a confirmed high-voltage battery fire.
  5. Give responders useful details. From a safe distance, provide the make, model and year if you know them. Also report whether the vehicle was in a crash, submerged, charging or stored indoors.
  6. Follow professional instructions. Firefighters, law enforcement, the manufacturer, qualified recovery operators and the insurer may each have a role in deciding how the vehicle is isolated, cooled, moved and stored.

Smoke from any vehicle fire can be dangerous. Avoid breathing it, stay upwind when practical without delaying evacuation and do not stand near a garage door, vehicle opening or enclosed area where gases may collect.

Why responders need the vehicle’s make, model and year

There is no single scientifically validated extinguishment method that applies to every EV. Vehicles differ in battery chemistry, pack location, pack size, structural protection, cutoff procedures and construction. The circumstances also matter: a vehicle burning outdoors is a different problem from one in a garage, parking structure, collision scene or recovery yard.

That is why the U.S. Fire Administration, NHTSA, the Department of Energy and the NTSB emphasize vehicle-specific information. Responders can consult the manufacturer’s emergency response guide and relevant field references for hazards, high-voltage isolation, battery location, towing, storage and post-fire monitoring. The correct tactic may depend on whether the battery is involved at all and whether the vehicle has been damaged by impact, water or heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fire department, fleet manager or safety professional, an up-to-date electric vehicle emergency response guide can be a useful supplemental reference. It should be used alongside the manufacturer’s current guide, dispatch and incident-command procedures and trained personnel—not as a consumer firefighting manual. An owner’s purchase of a manual does not make it safe to approach a burning battery.

What happens after an EV fire or serious crash?

The visible fire is not necessarily the end of the incident. Professionals may need to determine whether the traction battery was damaged, whether it can be isolated, how it should be transported and where it can be stored while it is monitored. A routine repair shop, enclosed garage or standard tow arrangement may not be appropriate.

Tell every person handling the vehicle that it is an EV or hybrid and describe the incident accurately. A car that was flooded, crushed, exposed to intense heat or involved in a battery fire needs a different recovery decision from an undamaged car with a flat 12-volt battery.

Do not charge or dismantle a vehicle after a serious crash or flood until the manufacturer and qualified professionals have assessed it. Do not rely on a universal cooldown period, a blanket, an internet video or the absence of visible flames as proof that the battery is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The three ideas to keep separate

  • Probability: How often does a vehicle catch fire? Available comparative evidence does not show EVs are more likely overall.
  • Severity: How intense or damaging can the fire be? EVs, like gasoline vehicles, can produce severe fires and toxic smoke.
  • Response complexity: What happens after the first flames appear? High-voltage shock, stranded energy, gas release, delayed ignition and reignition can make a battery-involved incident unusually difficult to manage.

Combining those three questions into one sensational claim—either EVs explode constantly or EVs never burn—produces bad safety advice. The evidence supports a more useful answer: EVs are not shown to be uniquely fire-prone, but a damaged high-voltage battery must be treated as a specialized emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are electric cars more likely to catch fire than gasoline cars?

No. The available comparative evidence does not show that EVs are more likely to catch fire overall than gasoline or diesel vehicles. However, battery-involved fires can be more complex because of high voltage, stranded energy, flammable gases, delayed ignition and reignition.

Can an EV catch fire when it is not charging?

Charging is only one possible cause. Crash damage, crushing, flooding, overheating, internal short circuits, vibration and manufacturing defects can also damage a high-voltage battery. Safe charging equipment and correct installation reduce preventable charging hazards but cannot guarantee that a damaged battery will not fail.

Is a flooded electric car safe after it dries out?

Do not assume so. NHTSA warns that flooded EV and hybrid batteries can remain high-voltage shock and fire hazards. Keep a damaged vehicle out of a garage and away from structures and combustibles, contact emergency services and the dealer or manufacturer, and do not inspect or repair it yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an EV battery reignite after a fire is put out?

It can be. Battery cells may retain energy, continue heating internally or produce flammable gases after visible flames disappear. There is no universal cooldown time for every EV fire, so owners should not charge, move, dismantle or store a damaged vehicle until qualified professionals have assessed it.

Do EV fire blankets put out battery fires?

Not as a universal consumer solution. Research and safety advisories warn that a blanket can hide visible flames while thermal runaway continues and gases accumulate. Air reintroduced into that gas mixture can create an explosion risk. Fire departments may consider blankets within trained tactics, but owners should evacuate and call emergency services instead.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Electric cars can catch fire, but the evidence reviewed does not show that they explode or catch fire more often overall than gasoline or diesel vehicles. The important difference is what can happen when a high-voltage battery is damaged or enters thermal runaway: toxic and flammable gases, electrical shock, stored energy, delayed ignition and reignition. If an EV is burning, flooded or seriously damaged, evacuate, call emergency services, identify the vehicle and leave suppression, recovery and storage decisions to trained professionals.
