Three documented Cybertruck recalls involved an accelerator pedal pad that could dislodge, a delayed rearview-camera image, and an exterior stainless-steel strip that could detach. Each applied to a defined group of vehicles and had its own remedy. These records identify real safety or compliance issues, but they do not show that Cybertrucks generally “self-destruct,” establish an overall defect rate, or provide a current recall total.
What the Cybertruck recalls actually involved
The documented problems affected different components and vehicle populations. The remedies ranged from a software update to physical repair; the recall counts are affected-vehicle totals, not failure rates.
| Issue | Vehicles covered | Risk described | Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerator pedal pad (recall 24V-276, April 2024) | 3,878 model-year 2024 Cybertrucks built November 13, 2023–April 4, 2024, according to NHTSA’s recall report. | Under high force, the pad could dislodge and become trapped in interior trim above the pedal. | Free rework or replacement of the pedal assembly. |
| Rearview-camera image (recall 24V-718, September 2024) | 27,185 model-year 2024 vehicles with specified low-voltage software logic, according to NHTSA’s recall report. | In certain conditions, the rearview image might not appear within two seconds of reversing and could remain blank for 6–8 seconds. | Free over-the-air software remedy. |
| Exterior cant rail (March 2025) | 46,096 model-year 2024–2025 Cybertrucks built November 13, 2023–February 27, 2025, according to the Associated Press report. | The stainless-steel strip running along each side between the windshield and roof could detach and become a road hazard. | Tesla would replace the strip free of charge, AP reported. |
What the accelerator-pedal recall means
For the affected vehicles, the concern was that the accelerator pad could come loose under high force and lodge in trim above the pedal. Tesla attributed the reduced retention to residual lubricant introduced after an unapproved assembly change, according to its report to NHTSA.
The report also describes a safeguard: braking cuts drive torque even if the accelerator and brake are pressed together, and continued braking will stop the vehicle as quickly as if the accelerator had not been pressed. Tesla reported no related collisions, injuries, or deaths as of April 15, 2024. That is a dated statement in the recall report, not a finding about later events.

Tesla’s recall support page says: “Tesla has voluntarily issued a safety recall on model year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles to replace or rework the accelerator pedal assembly to ensure sufficient retention force between the pad and accelerator pedal to prevent the pad from dislodging.”
Why the camera and cant-rail recalls are separate issues
Rearview-camera delay
NHTSA’s September 2024 report says a specified low-voltage software logic could, in certain conditions, fail to complete shutdown before rebooting. If the driver began reversing during that sequence, the required rearview image might not appear within two seconds and could stay blank for 6–8 seconds. Tesla supplied an over-the-air remedy at no charge. Tesla reported no related collisions, fatalities, or injuries as of September 25, 2024, according to the NHTSA report.

Exterior cant rail
The March 2025 recall concerned an exterior stainless-steel strip, not the camera or accelerator. If the strip detached, it could create a road hazard. The Associated Press reported that Tesla would replace the affected part at no charge.
Do these recalls prove Cybertrucks tend to “self-destruct”?
No. “Self-destruct” is a provocative description, not a technical conclusion supported by these records. The three actions identify specific defects, defined recall populations, and distinct remedies. Their affected-vehicle counts do not tell us how many vehicles actually experienced a failure, and the sources do not provide a defensible overall Cybertruck defect rate or a comparable reliability statistic.

- Hot Wheels 2022 Tesla Cybertruck
AP described the cant-rail action as the eighth recall since customer deliveries began, in its March 2025 report. That is a count as of that reporting, not a verified total as of October 2026. A current total requires a fresh database lookup. NHTSA also explains that its search distinguishes the date a recall was published from the date the safety issue was reported; see its recall search guidance.

- Find your VIN. Use the vehicle identification number to check vehicle-specific recall status.
- Search Tesla’s recall information or NHTSA’s recall lookup. Tesla’s pedal recall support page directs owners to check by VIN; NHTSA’s recall search provides vehicle recall information.
- Follow the remedy shown for your vehicle. For the accelerator-pedal recall, Tesla says to arrange service in the Tesla app. The company says the rework or replacement takes less than 15 minutes and that Mobile Service may perform it where permitted; this is manufacturer guidance.
If your vehicle is affected, use the remedy and service instructions Tesla provides for your VIN rather than assuming that a recall affecting another Cybertruck applies to yours. For a current, vehicle-specific answer, rely on the VIN lookup rather than a dated recall count.
