Cybertruck Owner Says Brakes Failed in Crash Hours After Pickup

A Cybertruck owner alleged that the brakes failed in a crash hours after pickup. The available report and NHTSA recall filing do not establish the crash’s cause.

A Cybertruck owner says its brakes failed and sent the new vehicle into a neighbor’s yard within hours of pickup. The reported crash occurred on April 27, 2024, but the available reporting and recall records do not establish what caused it or confirm a brake defect.

What the Cybertruck owner says happened

Business Insider, in a report republished by Yahoo Autos, identified the owner as Bruce Freshwater. He said the crash happened on April 27, 2024, within hours of picking up his Cybertruck, and attributed it to brakes that did not work. The vehicle reportedly went into a neighbor’s yard. Yahoo Autos’ report says Tesla did not respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

That account is an allegation, not a published engineering finding. The available report does not provide a completed investigation, vehicle-log analysis, or official determination of the cause. It says Freshwater reported that Tesla was investigating, but does not establish the outcome.

What NHTSA’s Cybertruck accelerator recall says—and does not say

A separate federal recall is relevant to pedal-operation questions, but it does not establish a cause for Freshwater’s crash. NHTSA recall 24V-276 concerns an accelerator-pedal pad that could dislodge and become trapped in interior trim, potentially affecting pedal operation. The filing covers 3,878 potentially involved model-year 2024 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through April 4, 2024. That is the accelerator-recall population, not a count of brake failures or crashes.

In the recall filing, NHTSA states that “continued application of the brake pedal will bring the vehicle to a stop as quickly as if the accelerator pedal was not pressed.” This describes the brake-override behavior stated in the accelerator-pedal recall report; it does not verify the condition of Freshwater’s vehicle or determine what happened in his crash. The filing does not identify his crash as a recall event or find that its brakes failed. Read NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-276.

Why another Cybertruck recall should not be conflated with this allegation

NHTSA also filed a separate 2024 recall, 24V-456, involving possible windshield-wiper motor failure and 11,688 potentially involved vehicles. It concerns wipers, not braking, and does not provide evidence about the cause of Freshwater’s crash. Read NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-456.
