The CUPRA Formentor may suit households that prefer petrol or diesel, need a particular version’s towing capability, or find it a better match for local prices and support. Neither is a universal winner: the best choice depends on your journeys, charging access, required equipment and the exact trim available where you live.
How do the Formentor and MGS5 EV compare for family use?
The MGS5 EV is fully electric and rear-wheel drive. The Formentor range includes petrol and diesel versions, including a 1.5 TSI mild hybrid; equipment and specifications vary by market. That makes the first decision practical rather than abstract: whether an electric vehicle fits your regular routes and charging options, or whether you want the flexibility of a combustion-engine model.
| Family consideration | MG MGS5 EV | CUPRA Formentor |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain in the cited European information | Fully electric; 49 kWh and 64 kWh battery choices are listed by MG. | Petrol and diesel variants are listed, including a 1.5 TSI mild-hybrid example in the cited brochure. |
| Boot capacity | 453 litres; 1,441 litres with rear seats folded, according to MG Motor Europe (May 2025). | 450 litres for the cited 1.5 TSI 150 HP MHEV; capacity varies by engine. CUPRA lists 420 litres for a cited 2.0 TSI 204 HP 4Drive and 410 litres for the VZ5. |
| Published safety evidence in the cited sources | MG reports a five-star Euro NCAP rating, including an 82% child-occupant score (2025). | A matching current Euro NCAP rating was not established in the cited information. |
| Local price and availability | Not established by the cited information; check the version offered in your market. | Not established by the cited information; CUPRA says specifications differ by country. |
The capacity figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from a shared luggage test. Their small difference in standard boot volume does not establish which car will take more of your family’s actual kit. If you can, bring your pushchair, luggage or sports equipment to a showroom and check the boot in person.
Which has the bigger boot, and is either easier to load?
MG MGS5 EV
MG lists 453 litres of standard boot space and 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded. It describes a 60:40 split-fold rear seat, a two-stage boot floor, hooks and net pockets. Those features offer ways to adapt the cargo area, but the figures alone cannot tell you whether a particular buggy will fit or how easy it is to lift in.

CUPRA Formentor
CUPRA’s 2026 brochure gives 450 litres for the 1.5 TSI 150 HP mild hybrid and 2.0 TDI EVO 150 HP versions, 420 litres for a cited 2.0 TSI 204 HP 4Drive and 410 litres for the VZ5. Do not assume the largest figure applies across the Formentor range: check the exact engine and trim you are considering.
For a family, usable space depends on the shape of the boot, loading height and the space left after child seats are installed—not just the litre figure. The cited information does not provide a directly comparable measurement method, loading-lip assessment or family luggage test. Test-fit bulky items before deciding.

- WIDE ACCESSORY COMPATIBILITY Can be used with accessory systems compatible with T-Bolt or U-Type mounting bolts with a minimum width of 75 mm.
- EASY INSTALLATION Installation can be completed within 15–25 minutes without professional assistance using vehicle-specific mounting kits.
What do we know about rear-seat space and child seats?
MG says the MGS5 EV can accommodate four adults, but the cited information does not provide comparable rear-seat legroom or headroom measurements for both vehicles. Nor does it establish child-seat compatibility for either exact model and trim. Check the rear bench and door access with your own child seats, and confirm the vehicle’s approved installation points in the local owner’s manual before purchase.
The MGS5 EV’s 60:40 split-fold rear seat can help when you need to carry a mix of passengers and longer cargo. Whether that arrangement works for your family depends on how many seats you need occupied and the dimensions of what you carry.

Which has stronger published child-safety evidence?
MG Motor Europe reported in 2025 that Euro NCAP awarded the MGS5 EV five stars, with scores of 90% for adult occupant protection, 82% for child occupant protection, 82% for vulnerable road users and 78% for safety assist. These are MG’s reported results for that model; the cited information does not establish a matching current Formentor rating. It therefore supports saying that the MGS5 EV has published results here, not that it has been proven safer than the Formentor.
A star rating is not a substitute for checking the exact car’s equipment. Before buying either vehicle, confirm the model year, which driver-assistance features are standard on the trim you want, and whether the safety information applies to that version and market.

Does the MGS5 EV’s range and charging suit family journeys?
MG lists 49 kWh and 64 kWh batteries. For the 64 kWh Comfort Long Range, MG gives a maximum combined WLTP range of 480 km. MG also states that a 10–80% rapid charge takes 28 minutes for the 64 kWh battery and 24 minutes for the 49 kWh version. These are manufacturer figures, not a promise of real-world range or a guaranteed charging time on every charger. Weather, driving conditions, charger capability and the vehicle’s state of charge can affect a trip.
Consider your routine before choosing the electric MG: whether you can charge at home or work, how far you typically drive, and where you would recharge on longer trips. Compare the electricity and fuel costs that apply locally; the available information does not settle a like-for-like running-cost comparison.

When might the Formentor be the better family choice?
- You prefer a petrol or diesel drivetrain, or regular journeys and charging access make a fully electric car inconvenient.
- A particular Formentor version meets a towing requirement. CUPRA’s brochure includes towing data, but the permitted capacity depends on the exact engine and specification; verify the figure for the car you intend to buy.
- The Formentor’s local price, equipment, availability or dealer support better suits your household. These vary by country and are not resolved by the cited specifications.
What should you check before choosing?
- Match the market and trim. CUPRA explicitly warns that its range and specifications differ by country; MG’s figures also refer to particular versions. Ask a local dealer to confirm the current specification, equipment, price and delivery timing.
- Test your family’s fit. Bring the child seats and bulky luggage you use regularly. Check installation, rear access and boot loading in the exact vehicle.
- Map your journeys and energy options. For the MG, consider charging access, usual distances and long-trip stops. For either car, use local fuel or electricity costs rather than assuming one drivetrain will be cheaper.
- Confirm ownership details. Check warranty terms, insurance, servicing and dealer access for the exact model and market. The cited information does not support a current, like-for-like price or ownership-cost verdict.
