Subaru and BMW tied for the highest score in Consumer Reports’ 2026 Automotive Brand Report Card, with 82 points each; Subaru ranked first and BMW second. Porsche, Honda, and Toyota completed the top five. The ranking averages the Overall Scores of each brand’s vehicles, so it is a useful place to start—not a guarantee that every model from a high-ranked brand is a good choice.

How Consumer Reports scores car brands

Consumer Reports calculates each brand’s position by averaging the Overall Scores of its new vehicles. Those vehicle scores combine four kinds of evidence:

  • Road-test performance: CR says its experts evaluate vehicles in more than 50 tests.
  • Predicted reliability: The reliability prediction draws on member reports about problems across 20 possible trouble areas.
  • Owner satisfaction: CR uses members’ reports of whether they would buy the same vehicle again.
  • Safety: The rating includes available crash-test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and whether proven crash-prevention systems are standard or offered as upgrades.

For the 2026 report card, Consumer Reports said it reviewed road-test scores for more than 200 new vehicles and member survey data representing about 380,000 vehicles. CR reported that its survey vehicle data increased 27 percent from the prior year. These are CR-reported counts; they do not, by themselves, establish that the survey represents all U.S. vehicle owners.

What stands out in the 2026 results

Subaru leads, with BMW close behind

Subaru ranked first and BMW second, although both scored 82. Consumer Reports cited Subaru’s shared parts, reliability, safety systems, and emergency handling and braking performance. It also said BMW’s reliability compares favorably with that of its European rivals.

Lincoln made the biggest climb

Lincoln rose 17 positions, the largest increase in the report card; Tesla moved up eight. Consumer Reports attributed the shifts partly to improving reliability. It cautioned that a completely new model can carry reliability risks, and that one vehicle can have a larger effect on a brand with a small lineup.

Jeep ranked last for a third consecutive year

Jeep placed 31st with a score of 48. Consumer Reports pointed to below-average brand reliability, its lowest average road-test score in CR testing, and the lowest owner-satisfaction score.

How to use the ranking when choosing a car

A brand average cannot tell you whether a particular vehicle suits your needs. Consumer Reports advises shoppers to check the individual model’s Overall Score and predicted reliability. Compare the model’s road-test results, owner-satisfaction information, and safety assessment as well; then weigh those against its price and how you plan to use it.

A high-ranked brand may still sell a model that performs poorly, while a lower-ranked brand may have a vehicle that fits your priorities. Use the brand table as a shortlist aid, then make the decision at the model level.
